    Flooding Rains

Water is at the heart of the Illawarra. The streams run down the escarpment into the ocean and in between the mountains and the sea lies a massive body of water - Lake Illawarra. It's these natural wonders that draw people to live here. But in the floods of 2022, many homes in the Illawarra were damaged. Some clifftop houses are even at risk of falling into the ocean and the marine life is changing due to warming sea temperatures. In this episode we ask what our future will look like in a dangerously warming climate? Ocean Pools

It’s fair to say, Aussie kids are in the water from birth. We learn to swim as babies, we have swimming carnivals all through school we spend our summers at the local pool or at the beach or at the river. Or if you're lucky to grow up in the Illawarra your pool is carved into the rocky platforms of the coastline and filled with salty seawater. This episode follows the rich history of how our ocean pools came to be. We meet the people who swim in them, the team of four who clean them and the creatures and surfers who gather just beyond them.  Between the Mountains and the Sea is produced by third year journalism students at the University of Wollongong and is a production of UOWTV.  It's recorded in the UOW Radio studios at the Wollongong Campus which is on the land of the Dharawal, Ilouri, and Wadi Wadi peoples.
