Adriana was a student in my Organization Theory class in Fall 2017 and graduated from the College of Business with a dual major in Management and Supply Chain Management. Adriana started her career working in supply chain in the specialized aircraft metals industry but eventually decided she wanted to work in the field of education. Adriana is now a substitute teacher pursuing her credential to become a high school math teacher. Our conversation covers topics like the different nature of social interactions in a corporate environment versus an educational environment, the inescapable randomness of finding a career path that makes you happy, how she discovered she actually enjoyed working with teenagers, the upsides to a career in teaching, and why management skills matter just as much in a school as in a business.

Felix was a student in my Business Strategy class in Spring 2016 and graduated from the College of Business with a concentration in Finance. Felix started his career at Beyond Meat but now works as a strategic financial analyst at Harbinger Motors. Our conversation covers topics like the benefits of working with a temp agency to find a career job, the challenge of adjusting to office hierarchy norms when you have a somewhat irreverent personality, differences in how bosses perceive informality if you are Black or Latinx instead of White or Asian, how building systems that make your job easier opens the way for promotion, the importance of being able to trust your management, and how taking a job that gives you better skills is often more important than taking one that gives you higher pay.

Ken now works as a key account manager at CMA-CGM, one of the world's largest shipping carriers. Our conversation covers topics like the painful transition from his fun, flexible, relatively well paid part time college job as a bartender/server to waking up early for the 8 to 5 grind of his first corporate position, how he got his first job in the shipping industry and learned to enjoy sales and account management, the benefit of joining a company with a large cohort of people your own age, how mastering excel has freed up so much of his time, and the importance of building relationships in any career.

A Toast to Success--Making a Career Out of Work You Truly Love: Ashleigh Hehmann, Class of 2015, Management Major
In this episode of Beyond the Beach, I talk with Ashleigh Hehmann. Ashleigh was a student in my Business Strategy class in Fall 2014 and graduated from the College of Business with a concentration in Management. Ashleigh began her post-graduation career as a manager at an electrical distribution company, but eventually decided to make a true career out of the job she had loved as a college student--bartending. Ashleigh currently works at Accomplice Bar in LA. She also competes as a bartender both nationally and internationally and was selected to compete in this year's Patron Perfectionist competition at the Hacienda del Patron in Jalisco, Mexico this upcoming May. Our conversation covers topics like what it was like to be a woman manager in a male dominated field like electrical distribution, how pride and societal beliefs about what is and isn't a legitimate career can keep us from doing work we truly love, how critical mental health is for success, satisfaction, and happiness, and how the rich resources, guild structure, and community in the field of bartending provide opportunities for learning, growth, and career advancement that few people are aware of.

In this episode of Beyond the Beach, I talk with Melissa Cole. Melissa was a student in my 2018 Business Strategy class and graduated from COB with a degree in accounting. Melissa became a CPA in 2020 and worked as an auditor at Deloitte before taking a break to deal with a family emergency. We talk about getting the CPA license, the culture of Big Four accounting, workplace harassment, advocating for yourself, work/life separation, broadening your thinking about accounting career paths, and adjusting to the curveballs that life throws.

In this episode of Beyond the Beach, I talk with Allison Quintanilla. Allison was a student in my 2015 Business Strategy class and graduated from COB in 2016 with a degree in accounting. She started her career as a junior accountant at a large manufacturer in the steel industry and now works as accounting integration lead at a growing midsize firm that supplies software to businesses in the home services space. In this episode we talk about the plusses and minuses of taking on additional responsibility at your job, asking for what you are worth, knowing when to move on, finding a place you love, networking and being yourself, and how working well with people matters even in a field like accounting.

It's Never That Linear: Elliot Huscher, Class of 2018. Finance Major
In this episode of Beyond the Beach, I talk with Elliot Huscher, a student in my 2018 Business Strategy class. Elliot majored in finance at the College of Business and began his career doing financial advising at a wealth management firm. Eventually his interest in the underlying assets drew him into asset management and fixed income securities. Then an opportunity to join a FinTech (financial technology) startup in the consumer loan origination space attracted him to his current role.

For the inaugural episode of Beyond the Beach, I'm joined by Wade Carlson, who was a student in my Business Strategy class in Spring of 2018. Wade studied International Business as a student at CSULB's College of Business and started his post-Beach career at a global logistics firm. From there he moved into digital marketing and now works as a specialist in search engine optimization. We talk about the pluses and minuses of starting in a smaller firm, picking up skills you can leverage for better pay, getting recognized for the value you bring, and the need to balance ambition with the right amount of patience.
