When a Chimpanzee Needed Neurologic Care: How a Veterinary and Human Neurologist Teamed Up to Save Him
In this episode,Talisha Moore, DVM, DACVIM (Neurology) and James A. Killeffer, MD, human neurosurgeon, discuss their collaboration on a groundbreaking case at Zoo Knoxville, the first documented spinal surgery of its kind performed on a chimpanzee. When Lu, a beloved chimpanzee, began showing signs of weakness in his hind legs, an MRI revealed a spinal tumor compressing his spinal cord. Recognizing the unique anatomical and physiological similarities between chimps and humans, Dr. Moore partnered with Dr. Killeffer to combine their expertise in veterinary and human neurology to perform this historic procedure.
