Bilingual Readings of Winter '24 Issue

One poem, two worlds.

    11. There Are Words - Zixia Liu

There Are Wordsby Zixia LiuThere are words for hunger, words for painwords for loss, and words for joy. There is a word foryou, and one for me. Several for yellow, andmore for blue. Though, at a certain point, there are no more words. No words for you laughing, throwing your headback, your irises disappear. No words to describemy failing. No words for seeing a group ofancient uncles all dressed up, riding the metro. No words for overhearing my grandmothertelephoning her friends. So-and-so died, did youhear. Or one of her siblings she likes. Rememberwhen mom died, I was the one who paid for hertomb. There are no words for death, onlyaround. Listen, at the height of my fever Isaw my grandmother sitting on my bed, careful not towrinkle the bedsheets. But no words for her, either - nosentences, no lines. And none for hunger, nor painnor loss or joy. A term too thin, eachsurviving on itself. Daily, I sit by my desk and try to catchair. No other words are there for loveor friendship, only "zai-wei, zai-wei!" The ancientuncles on the metro shout at one another when one of them reaches his stop, and gets off. See you again; see youagain.
