Bleachmouth Postscript

The Postscript features rambling, off-the-cuff discussions with friends, musicians, writers and artists of all types about 5 records (or songs) they love. You’ll hear some hot and not-so-hot takes, as well as strongly held opinions and harsh criticisms. You’ll also hear much milder opinions along with facts and factual errors of all kinds. But hey, it is all about having fun conversations, as well as discovering new music and old gems, hidden or otherwise.

  1. 38

Episode 118: Elliott Carter (Off Leash)

"Some gates are meant to be kept" Elliott Carter is the vocalist for Akron based punk band Off Leash. We talk a bit about her musical history and mutuals friends as well her five picks for the episode. It is a fun and lively conversation that goes all over the place! You can check out Off Leash at the links below. @offleash.live www.youtube.com/@offleashohio

  2. 37

Episode 117: Cousteau'd-Goatsnake "Flower of Disease"

"A Truckload of Opinions" It's time for another deep dive! This time Marc and Tim join me to talk about Goatsnake's "Flower of Disease".

  3. 36

    Episode 66: Shawn Fosnight

"There are two kinds of people I don't want to have lunch with..." Shawn Fosnight and I have known each other for over 30 years. We first met as contributors for Crunchface Fanzine. Later, Shawn and I shared a house with friends, he booked my band for a ton of shows and together we attended many, many more. Shawn has always had a deep and abiding love for skateboarding and music. It made made sense to have him on as a guest. (Interview originally published 9/5/2023)

  4. 35

    Episode 4: Jeff Jingle

"Wacky Dee and Stabmaster Arson" Jeff Jingle is a practical effects artist that has worked on Pacific Rim, The Mandalorian, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Captain America: Civil War, Real Steel, Where the Wild Things Are and dozens more. I first met Jeff in the early 90s as the vocalist for the metallic hardcore band Anguish - who released a 7" on Dark Empire Records.  This is another early episode that was lost while I was attempting to find a new host for the podcast. Jeff is one of my oldest friends and I'd be remiss if I didn't republish this one. Enjoy! (Interview originally published 1/29/21)

  5. 34

    Episode 116: Jason Tarulli

"Mr. Mojo Rising IS your huckleberry AND The Lizard King"   Jason Tarulli is a live audio engineer that has toured with and run front of house sound for Courtney Barnett, The Black Keys, Social Distortion, Jewel and a host of others. I've known Jason for nearly 30 years and we frequently DJ together with our buddy Matt. Jason DJs under the "Really Cool DJ" alias as well, spinning rare soul, garage rock and other obscure gems. This raw audion for this one was recorded three years ago and thought to be lost before I had a chance to publish episode. Fortunately, it turned up for me to share here. Check it out.

    Episode 115: Underrated Seven-Inches

"Absolution Rules" On this episode I sit down with Chris (NCS Podcast) and Rich to talk about some of our favorite underrated seven-inches. Thanks to my technical expertise I lost the first recording of this very topic (apologies to Chicago Will), so this is our second go-around. It was a fun conversation nonetheless.

  7. 32

Episode 6: Bob Shedd and Pete Hilton, Part 2

"In Search of Tracks" Another one from the vaults. This episode features my buddies Pete Hilton (Down in Flames/Kamikaze) and Bob Shedd (Axe to Grind) from the greatly missed In Search of Tracks podcast. This is a long but very fun conversation. This is part 2 of 2. (Interview originally published 2/17/21)

  8. 31

Episode 6: Pete Hilton and Bob Shedd, Part 1

"In Search of Tracks" Another one from the vaults. This episode features my buddies Pete Hilton (Down in Flames/Kamikaze) and Bob Shedd (Axe to Grind) from the greatly missed In Search of Tracks podcast. This is a long but very fun conversation. This is part 1 of 2. (Interview originally published 1/27/21)

  9. 30

    Episode 7: Chris Pellow

"Chris Worm" This is one from the vaults. Prior to me losing access to my original server, I had a TON of episode and this is one of the earliest. I've known Chris since 1990(?) from my days with Crunchface Fanzine and his time in Ringworm, but more importantly, Windpipe. Windpipe are far and away my favorite Cleveland hardcore band inspite of their low profile as it relates to their short life and the fact that they never had a proper release. There IS a 7" out there and I'm glad it exists, but it doesn't properly represent how much they truly ripped. In any case, I've been meaning to report this one for a minute and here it is...Again, it is a really early episode so the sound quality might be a bit rough. (Interview originally published 2/23/21)

  10. 29

    Episode 114: Cousteau'd - Carnivore "Retaliation"

"The Newest Drinking Game; 'Saying Dumb' " Wanna hear three men of a certain vintage have an in depth discussion about a nearly 40 year old record? Wanna hear the word "dumb" repeated ad nauseum because someone doesn't use his Roget's Thesaurus? Well, now is your chance!!! Rich, Will and I have a sprited discussion about a the controversial second album "Retaliation" by Carnivore.

  11. 28

Episode 113: "Cold Comfort" (with Rich and Chiacago Will)

"Cold Comfort" Rich, Will and I sat down and talked about the music (old and new) that has helped us cope with our existence within this nightmarish hellscape. Buckle up! We go all over the place on this one!

  12. 27

    Episode 112: Best of 2025

"Cat Stevens was wrong" Another year, another 'Best Of' episode. I'm joined by a few of my friends with their thoughts on what music they've enjoyed in 2025.

  13. 26

Episode 111: Cousteau'd - The Accused "Martha Splatterhead's Maddest Stories Ever Told"

"Lon Chaney Jr. vs. Blaine Cook" Rich and I finally sat down for another deep dive. This time I went with an old favorite. Much has been made of the term "crossover" since the term was coined in the mid-1980s. If there was a band that expresses all the the essential feature of the "genre"(?), it would have to be The Accused. Their 3rd album, "Martha Splatterhead's Maddest Stories Ever Told" may have arguably been their best and most well known record. In any case, it is a record that deserves a closer look. If you're interested, Episode 68 features my interview with The Accused's vocalist, Blaine Cook. You can find that in the feed.

  14. 25

Episode 110: Mark Miller (Hold Out/NCS Podcast)

"Ride Like the Wind: The Teddy Riley Story" Mark Miller is a talented photographer, one of the co-hosts of the long running Nickel City Soundtrack Podcast, as well as the vocalist for the Buffalo based hardcore band Hold Out. This episode is a LONG one, but if one of the more fun conversations I've had on this podcast. We go all over the place with this one!!! Check out Mark's band - holdout716.bandcamp.com You can find NCS Podcast at all the usual podcast apps.

  15. 24

    Episode 109: Silas Hite (composer)

"The Return of the Chicha Vampire Macbre Hustlers" Silas Hite is an Emmy winning composer that has scored dozens of films and television shows. He recently released and album of Chicha inspired music with his artistic collaborator Derel Zimmerman called "Chicha Macabre". This collaboration has recorded a second soon to be released album called "The Return of the Vampire Hustlers". Silas and I had a fun and rambling conversation that covers a lot of ground, not the least of which how he got started scoring film and TV projects. www.silashite.com

  16. 23

Episode 108: Jaclyn (Last Letter Project)

"The BIG Shoe" On October 11 at Musica, The Last Letter Project is putting on their 10th annual Speedbump Fest featuring The Briefs, The Robert Conn Band, Hams and Hell Is Here with DJ Matt Feeney playing records before, after and in between sets. I invited my pal Jaclyn on to talk all about it!

  17. 22

Episode 107: Paul Bearer (Sheer Terror)

"For the Love of Paco" Many of you know Paul Bearer as the vocalist/lyricist for the legendary Sheer Terror. But, did you know that Paul is a crate digger extraodinaire with immaculate taste? No? Well, now you do. In the words of the Immortal Bard, "Check it out".

  18. 21

Episode 106: Val (Ignorant People Fanzine)

"The Case of the Missing Bifocals" Val is the force behind Ignorant People; a zine that is currently 4 issues deep with an eagerly anticipated 5th issue currently being put together as of this writing. Recently, there has been a huge resurgence in traditional print zines and Ignorant People, along with Razorblades and Aspirin is among the best. Val and I had a fun conversation about Mind Erase, The Inmates and a lot more.

  19. 20

    Episode 105: Tom Brose (Confront/Integrity)

"Our Fight" Tom Brose was a few years ahead of me and was the bassist for Confront. We hadn't met until recently and we had a really nice talk. We discussed Confront's complicated legacy and setting the record straight. But, more important than that, Tom worked hard to make sure that there was a proper reissue of Confront's 'Pay Day' 7" and their demo via the revived Dark Empire. Both are awesome and are highly recommended.

  20. 19

Episode 104: DX Ferris (Author of "66 2/3:A Metal Band Biography")

"Talkin' Slayer (Mostly...)" My pal DX Ferris returns to talk about the 4th edition of his EXCELLENT book "Slayer - 66 2/3: A Metal Band Biography (Reborn & Re-Remastered Update)". To me, this is the definitive biography on one of the most important bands in heavy metal. It is a heavy duty tome and you can get it at the links below. www.slayerbio.com @slayerbook @slayerbooks facebook.com/slayerbook

  21. 18

    Episode 103: RIP Ozzy Osbourne

Rest in Power Ozzy. Thank you for everything.

  22. 17

    Episode 102: Cousteau'd - Mayday "Discography"

"Mr. Larry Uses His Teacher Voice" It is time for another deep dive! This time Tim, Mark and I take a look at the discography for the early 90's metallic hardcore band, Mayday. We go in deep and talk about the band's musical progression from 'The Underdark' 7", the split Ep with Integrity, the 'Lost in Sabbath' Ep and their final release 'Staplegun'. It was fun introducing Mayday to Tim and Marc, as well as visiting their catalog.

  23. 16

Episode 101: Patrick Kindlon (Drug Church/Axe to Grind Podcast)

"Is Rush for Reddit Objectivists?" Patrick Kindlon is the vocalist of Drug Church as well as Self-Defense Family. He is also the creator of the forthcoming comic Gehenna: Naked Aggression, which will be available through Image early July. We had a nice talk and covered a lot of ground. Some of the artists we dicussed; Rush, Amebix, Angels of Light, Colin Newman and The Triffids. https://imagecomics.com/comics/releases/gehenna-naked-aggression-1-of-4 www.soundtalentmedia.com/show/axe-to-grind-podcast/

  24. 15

Episode 100: Five and Change "Perfect Songs"

To commemorate the 100th episode I decided to talk about "perfect" songs. I go on a lot longer than I normally do, but I'm joined by some friends at the tail end of the episode to give me their takes on "perfect" songs. Podcasts are largely absurd and this one is no exception. Thanks to anyone that supported or helped in some way with this admittedly self-indulgent endeavor. I truly appreciate it.

  25. 14

Episode 17: Jamie Stillman, Part 2

"Can we keep talking about airport taco cabanas?" In true “Fast Kids” fashion, Jamie Stillman has worn a lot of hats. He was the drummer in Harriet The Spy, Velocipede and (my favorite) Teeth of the Hydra. Jamie was also the guitarist for the wildly popular Party of Helicopter. All the while running his own label – Donut Friends. Currently, Jamie is the President of Earthquaker Devices – an effects pedal manufacturer based in Akron, Ohio. At the time of this interview he was the bassist of Fringe Candidate and guitarist of Relaxer. Jamie is a very, very busy guy so I was happy that he could find the time to talk for a bit. I’ve known Jamie for a really long time and always enjoyed hanging out with him. It’s a fun conversation with lots of talk about hair metal, youth crew and cults. This is just Part 2 - Go listen to Part 1 first. But, here are some of the bands we cover over both parts: Armstrong Secret Nine, Sonic Youth, Chain of Strength, Gorilla Biscuits, Born Against, Helmet, Motley Crue, W.A.S.P., Life’s Blood, Youth of Today, Universal Order of Armageddon and Jawbox. https://www.earthquakerdevices.com/ (Interview originally published 4/26/21)

Episode 17: Jamie Stillman, Part 1

"God Bless Sammy Hagar" In true “Fast Kids” fashion, Jamie Stillman has worn a lot of hats. I’ve known Jamie for a really long time and always enjoyed hanging out with him. It’s a fun conversation with lots of talk about hair metal, youth crew and cults. This is just Part 1, but Part 2 is up now as well. Here are some of the bands we cover over both parts: Armstrong Secret Nine, Sonic Youth, Chain of Strength, Gorilla Biscuits, Born Against, Helmet, Motley Crue, W.A.S.P., Life’s Blood, Youth of Today, Universal Order of Armageddon and Jawbox. https://www.earthquakerdevices.com/ (Interview originally published 4/26/21)

  27. 12

Episode 99: Drew Stark (Corrosives, Candy, Violent Way)

"Into the Crypts of Stark" Drew Stark is a very busy man. When he is not playing guitar in Candy or Corrosives (where he is also the vocalist) he is conspiring to start at least two dozen other bands. AND when he is not doing that...Drew is having overly long conversations with me about all kinds of music; from Beherit to Tommy Keane. As a sage once said; "Check it out".  corrosives.bandcamp.com @candygonnadie

  28. 11

Episode 61: Shaun Filley (Annihilation Time, Puncture Wound, GSMF, Midnight)

"I have to go pee." I’ve known Shaun for a minute which is why I feel so bad that it took so long to get the episode out. But, it is worth the wait! You may have heard some of the bands Shaun’s been in or seen some of his artwork on some notable records. He is also opening his own print shop in Cleveland called Outside Graphics. Shaun is a fun dude and I enjoy our infrequent, but always rewarding conversations. Here’s some of what we go into; AC/DC, Metallica, Klaus Nomi, GG Allin, Carnivore, Easy Action, Laughing Hyenas, H-100s, Raw Power and 45 Grave. (Interview originally published 6/13/22)

  29. 10

Episode 98: Cousteau'd - Dead Horse "Horsecore: An Unrelated Story That's Time Consuming"

"The band Dead Horse. Wanna hear about it? Here it goes..." I'm joined by Rich and Will as we do another deep dive, this time on the debut of Houston, Texas metal legends Dead Horse. We had a great time dissecting this one. I'm only sorry it took this long to post the episode! Enjoy!

    "Rust Belt" Chris Wyatt is a co-host for the Buffalo based, Buffalo centric podcast “Nickel City Soundtrack”. I met Chris is either 1990 or 91 during my time as a writer for Crunchface Fanzine. Chris was a part of Crew Cutt Fanzine and was traveling from Buffalo to Chicago when he stopped in Akron to hang out. We hit it off and have been friends since. This one has a lot of Zero Tolerance and sneaker talk, but we hit quite a few other points as well;
Merauder, Jesus Christ Superstar, Violent Femmes, All Else Failed, Cold as Life, Fudge Tunnel, Murder Suicide Pact, Failure Face, Nine Inch Nails, Slowpoke, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, NY Wolfpack, All Else Failed and Warthog. This is Part 2 or 2. (Interview originally published 7/26/21)

    Episode 20: Anne Lillis (Surfrajettes/The Beyonderers/Safe Words), Part 2

"Will you be my Yoko?" Anne Lillis is the drummer for the amazing Safe Words and the equally great, but totally different Beyonderers. Since the original publish date of the interview, Anne has joined the Surfrajettes. But, I originally met her when she was in the band As If and our paths have crossed numerous times since. Anne has toured extensively with Jessica Lea Mayfield as well as Samantha Crain. I’ve always enjoyed seeing Anne out and about and thought she’d be perfect guest for an episode. I was correct in my thinking. Here are some of the artists that pop up in our wide ranging conversation; The Pretenders, Can, Howlin Wolf, Tanya Tucker, The Everly Brothers, The Shaggs, Gregg Allman, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Brian Eno, Roxy Music, The Dirty Mac, Don Covay and The Ronettes. www.thesurfrajettes.com thebeyonderers.bandcamp.com safewordscle.bandcamp.com (interview originally published 5/14/21)

    Episode 97: Floco Torres (MC/Lyricist)

"I'll take 'DJs and Turntablists' for 500, Alex." Floco Torres is a prolific Akron based MC/Lyricist that released his most recent LP "This Creative Life" a life close to six months ago. I wasn't late to the game on his music, but I was lagging behind on getting him as a guest. In any case, it was worth the wait as we go deep in the weeds about a lot of stuff, but most importantly, Chaka Khan. It a longer discussion, but well WELL worth your time. You can check out all of Floco's music on Spotify and keep up with him here; www.nobodycaresnews.com

  35. 4

Episode 11: Simon Harvey (Ugly Pop Records), Part 1

"Toronto has outgrown Peter Ustinov" Simon Harvey is an old buddy from Toronto. He is head honcho of Ugly Pop Records and a regular contributor to Ugly Things magazine as well as the excellent book “Tomorrow is Too Late” which covers the Toronto hardcore-punk scene of the early 80’s. Simon is also an incorrigible record collector and an all-around good guy. Some of the bands we talk about: The Waitresses, The Jam, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, The Who, Sham 69, Television, XTC, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, The Viletones, Dire Straits, Die Kreuzen, Discharge, Agnostic Front, Celtic Frost, Rixe, Slant, Infest, Minor Threat, Subhumans uglypop.bandcamp.com @uglypoprecords @uxbpress @uglythingsmag (Interview originally published 3/15/21)

Episode 96: Derek Dole (Do Crime/Nickel City Soundtrack Podcast)

"Properly Vetted" My pal Derek Dole is a Buffalo native, one of the guitarists for the incredible hardcore band Do Crime and a member of the Nickel City Soundtrack podcast braintrust. We had a fun and wide ranging conversation. You can hear him on NCS weekly and his band Do Crime on bandcamp as well as Apple Music and Spotify.

Episode 34: Five and Change "Marc's Mix Tape"

"RIP Roswell Kent Junior High" A few years ago they tore down the building that where I attended Junior High School. It brought back a ton of memories, particularly involving music. It was there that I really started to take ownership of music and there was a particular mix tape that helped me along my way. I recorded this "Five and Change" episode to document some of my thoughts. Sound quality be damned, I've republished this for posterity. (Originally published 9/4/21)

  39. 0

    Episode 95: Cousteau'd - Infest "Slave"

"Cousteau'd - Deuxième Partie" Marc and Tim join me as we do a deep dive on the classic "Slave" Lp by hardcore legends Infest. Of course we used the scientifically accurate "Shedd Method" to pick this one apart. We tried to keep this one as short as the songs on this record, but there was a lot to cover! Enjoy!

Episode 31: Matt Haas (Six Parts Seven/Actual Form) and Dave Ignizio (Square Records), Part 2

"Voivod - Forever and ever and ever"  I have know Dave and Matt for years. Longer than most people in my life. The one constant aside from their friendship is that we are always talking about music. Most of these discussions occur at Dave's record store, Square Records. It made sense to do and interview with them together. I am pretty sure that this was the first live interview I had done for the podcast. In spite of the dodgy sound quality, this is one of favorite conversations recorded for the podcast. Enjoy. Oh - This is Part 2 of 2. (Interview originally published 8/18/21)

    Episode 94: Jessica Anshutz (photographer)

"Missing mall anecdotes" My pal Jess has been taking pictures in, around and beyond Akron for quite some time. Much of her photography captures the decaying remnants of Reagan-era capitalism (malls) and also of our beloved hometown, Akron. But, as I discovered during our talk, she's been going to shows for much longer. We talk about the motivations behind her photography as well music. We've known each other for quite a while and this one was long overdue, but worth the wait!

  43. -4

    Episode 2: Malcolm Abrams (writer)

"You mean we get to be weird?" Malcolm Abrams is a writer that I met while he was covering music for the Akron Beacon Journal. Back in the early 2000s, we often had lengthy discussions about music while hanging out at The Lime Spider so it only made sense that he appear as one of my first guests. This is one of my favorite episode and one that I definitely felt NEEDED to be republished. The sound quality leaves a lot to be desired, but it is worth checking out!   (Interview originally published 2021)

  44. -5

Episode 93: Wes Dodd (The Bics, Strange Division, Real Dogs)

"That riff is nasty, just nasty" I have known Wes for over 20 years. We first met in the late 90s while our respective bands were playing shows in Akron at Fusion Records, Annabell's, The Lime Spider and The Mantis in Kent. We've done DJ sets together at local dives as well. No matter what the context, we've ALWAYS talked music. Music of all kinds. It took a minute, but I finally got one of these conversations recorded. To quote a sage, "check it out".

    Episode 92: Roadmap for 2025

    Episode 91: Best of 2024.

"Apocalypse '24, The Year Was Wack. Except the music" Out with the old (men), in with the new. It is the end of a long and eventful. There was a ton of great music released so I invited my frends to talk about 5 of their favorite releases of 2024. Along with Rich and Will, I've got my pal Chris Wyatt from Nickel City Soundtrack in addition to a handful of contributions from past guests at the end. Thank you for listening and have a great New Year!

Episode 22: Dave Neeson (Harriet the Spy/Gorgonessa comics/Cussed Out), Part 2

"A story best left untold?" Dave Neeson is an old friend and one of my favorite people. He is an artist, guitarist for Harriet the Spy and creator of countless zines. We have know each other since 1990. Our respective bands have played countless shows together and with that type of history there is sure to be some GREAT stories. We cover a lot of ground; comics, old-man punk stories and music. Some of the artists we cover; Armstrong Secret Nine, Black Flag, Unwound, Void, Doom, Sockeye, Stereolab, Huggy Bear, GBH, Daniel Johnston, Chickenhead, Rollins Band. You can check out Dave's work on Instagram @dave.neeson (Interview originally published 5/30/2021)

    Episode 90: DJ Foxytrot

"The Greatness of Patricia Kotero" My pal Athena (aka Foxytrot) is a DJ with a residency at Baxter's Speakeasy and has DJ'd numerous other places and events in the great city of Akron. We met on a night that I was playing records at Mr. Zubs and I've been meaning to have her a a guest ever since. The question is; why haven't I until now? An even more important question; why was I not aware of Akron's own Ruby and the Romantics prior to this recording? This was a fun one that was long overdue. Here are some of the folks we talk about- Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood, Ruby and the Romantics, Apollonia 6, Kay Bell and the Tuffs, Bonnie Jo Mason and many more!

    Episode 89: Cousteau'd - C.O.C. "Animosity"

"Cousteau'd" Instead of the guest picking 5 pieces of music, or a draft or me just rambling as I do on the "Five and Change" episodes, I thought I would go with a new format. I wanted to start doing "deep dives" on records that interest me for one reason or another. I went with one of my favorites, "Animosity" by C.O.C. I am joined by Rich and Will for this one and we used a scoring method developed by my buddy Bob Shedd. As usual there are a lot of detours. Not only do we talk at length about C.O.C., but we also name check Alienator, Crumbsuckers, The Accused and a few others.  We had a good time recording this one - I hope you enjoy it as well.

ABOUT THIS SHOW

The Postscript features rambling, off-the-cuff discussions with friends, musicians, writers and artists of all types about 5 records (or songs) they love. You’ll hear some hot and not-so-hot takes, as well as strongly held opinions and harsh criticisms. You’ll also hear much milder opinions along with facts and factual errors of all kinds. But hey, it is all about having fun conversations, as well as discovering new music and old gems, hidden or otherwise.
