Brihadaranyaka Upanishad

The term Upanishad (upa-ni-shad) translates to to sit down near, signifying the intimate dialogue between a teacher and students in the pursuit of knowledge. Among the 200 Upanishads, many are now lost but are referenced in others, traditionally passed down orally. The Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upanishad, one of the oldest and most significant Upanishads, is found within the Shatapatha Brahmana, a part of the Shukla Yajur Veda. The title suggests a connection to the forest, emphasizing its teachings for those seeking solitude and enlightenment. Shankara noted that this text aims to guide individuals toward realizing the unity of the Absolute Brahman and the self, offering liberation from worldly attachments.
