My Bones Just Look Weird
For this Halloween adjacent episode, Gawby shares a medical update and broods over her lack of a Halloween costume this year. She also shares some spooky real life experiences and plays you her short, 3-part, ghost story collection, Ghosts, Specters, & Other Entities to Fall in Love With (2020). Read Along: A Cemetery Girl At twilight, she approached the cemetery gates. Wrapping her aching fingers around the iron bars, she stared longingly at the gravestones. She allowed tears to trickle down her cheeks. She wished to be inside, amongst her friends. She listened closely for any sound that would bring her comfort. The silence was deafening, until she finally heard a faint wailing. A beautiful, tortured wailing. She knew that they longed for her too.The gates slowly opened for her and she entered the domain of the souls she dreamt of. Under a willow tree, a sleeping black dog awoke and stood up as she came closer. She stared into its mournful Stygian eyes, like black holes, that sucked her into a beckoning void. She began to follow the hound, trusting it, with every instinct she knew. They traveled passed the gravestones, smooth and cold, but vibrating with life just yet. A grand mausoleum, at the center of the cemetery, stood tall and proud against a purple sky and a glowing light of many colors pierced through the dusty windows and cob webs. The familiar scent of tobacco and wisteria twirled around her nose and invited her to come closer.Like the cemetery gates before, the doors to the tomb opened for her. They always would. A Guiding Light A burning, white flame. A guiding light that led her to the window in the dead of night. It floated above the sycamore trees and grew bigger and brighter the closer she came. Her curiosity drew her near, but she sensed that she had seen this flame before. Like an old childhood friend, coming back after years of separation. A low hum, grew louder, flooding her ears and her chest. The sound pulled her even closer and at its loudest point, everything went black. When she opened her eyes, she was lying in the garden. The moon was shining bright above her, illuminating her nightgown. With the passing seconds, the light grew brighter. It was the flame, not the moon. The effervescent hum that had seemingly bewitched her and brought her into the garden started up again only this time, it lifted her to her feet. Soon she was floating high above the trees. But she was not frightened. No, some how she knew that she was safe. She danced on the cool air, her bare feet landing on nothing and yet feeling more grounded than ever before. The flame grew larger and once more, it’s hum entranced the her. It’s song pulled her closer and the girl, finally remembering where she’d met this flame, opened her arms and darted for the burning light. When the two collided, a burst of embers shot in every direction. They both vanished. Into the light, she remained and she danced forever to the hum of her beautiful flame. An Ocean Burial In a pale, golden light, she stood at the edge of the seaside cliff. Her white, lace, smock flapped playfully with the misty breeze. The gulls flew overhead, reminding her of those brilliant summer afternoons she would spend on the beach with him. Her long, lost, but never forgotten, love. His name echoed in her mind with every crashing wave against the jagged rocks. At one point, she could’ve sworn he whispered into her eager ear. “I’ll be waiting” she thought she heard. It felt so real. So close and so warm. She tried to reach out and touch the memory that had tricked her, but only felt the delicate spray of the ocean down below. She knew she would never hold him again, at least, not in her present state of existence. It only took her a moment to decide. She backed away from the edge, took one last look at the note she’d written and placed it under a mossy stone. With that, she ran straight for the edge and leaped off of the cliff! As her body plunged into the deep blue her heart raced, but she resisted every urge to felt to fight. And then, she felt arms, arms he remembered all too well, wrapped tightly around her lifting her and carrying her out to sea.He had been waiting, and at last they were together again.
