Injury due to burns is the second most important causeof trauma-related deaths in children, ranking behindmotor vehicular accidents only. A severe burn is,undoubtedly, the most devastating injury a person cansustain and yet hope to survive. In addition to thefatally burnt children, a large number survive the burnsand have disfigurement, loss of function and physicaldeformity leading to psychological sequelae. A burninjury not only leaves the scars on the skin but also onthe mind. Returning to school and relating to theirpeers and teachers requires a major psychologicaladjustment on the part of the child. The parents suffernot only monetary loss because of costly and lengthytreatment involving extended time away from work butalso psychologically because they encounter greatdifficulty in finding a suitable ‘match’ for their child atthe time of marriage.
