Parenting: Teach our kids to speak up when they witness bullying

Most bullying happens when peers are around — nearly 90% of the time. But here’s the powerful truth: if a peer steps in to support the person being bullied, the bullying usually stops within 10 seconds. That means the people who see bullying happen have the power to stop it. Staying silent gives more power to the bully. But speaking up or stepping in helps take that power away.If the kids witness bullying, they can say something like:“Stop! You’re hurting them!”Or they can simply go over, stand beside the person being bullied, and walk away together. This can feel really hard to do alone, so try to stick with a friend or two who will support them. Being brave together makes a big difference.

    April 12/25: Cantonese buzzwords

There was a post on Threads that blew up.A 15-year-old was talking about his first trip to Japan and used trendy Gen Z buzzwords to make a joke, he was making fun of himself. But a lot of grown-ups didn’t catch the tone. They thought he was seriously trying to act superior just because he went to Japan. Then different people started leaving comments like, “I brought my child to Japan when she was one.” They completely missed the joke and started comparing with each other instead. ((🫣 As a grown-up, I felt secondhand embarrassment.))🗳️ Is comparison deeply rooted in Cantonese culture?

What should I do if my child says they don’t want to go to school?

We wanting to do something but feeling that little (or big) voice of fear holding us back. But wait… what do we do when our kid’s “big dream” is something we really don’t want them to follow through on? In this episode, we’ll talk about what’s actually behind answers like this, how to respond without shutting the conversation down, and how to turn it into a chance to connect (without just saying “because I said so!”).
