    MURDERED: Leota Camp

When a 25-year-old mother is stabbed to death in her bedroom in broad daylight, shock ripples through her quiet neighborhood. Witnesses reported seeing a man leaving the scene in a Mustang, but despite investigators’ efforts, both the suspect and the vehicle seem to vanish without a trace.Nearly 60 years later, the case remains unsolved. In this episode, we examine the 1967 murder of Leota Camp in Des Moines, Iowa. From the crime scene and autopsy findings to the puzzling lack of a clear motive, we break down the details of a case that continues to raise more questions than answers.SOURCES: Woman, 25, Is Slain Here, July 10, 1967, The Des Moines TribuneHatfield, Richard, Searching For Motive in Slaying, July 11, 1967, The Des Moines TribuneBrewer, Norman, 2 Knives Used in Slaying: Handle of One Not Found, July 12, 1967, The Des Moines TribuneDetective at Rites of Mrs. Camp, July 13, 1967, The Des Moines TribuneBrewer, Norman, Two Months Later, Camp Looks Back, September 13, 1967, The Des Moines TribunePolice Press Investigation Into Slaying in Des Moines, July 11, 1967, Iowa City Press CitizenKilen, Mike, Who Killed Leota Camp? 48 Years Later, and Still No Answer, July 27, 2015, Iowa City Press Citizen, The Des Moines RegisterDes Moines Hunts Housewife’s Killer, July 11, 1967, Quad City TimesDM Woman Found Slain, July 11, 1967, Quad City TimesHunt Killer of Young Mother of 3 at Des Moines, July 11, 1967, The CourierThink ‘Kook’ Killed Mom of Three, July 12, 1967, The CourierSeek killer of Des Moines housewife stabbed to death, July 12, 1967, The Denison BulletinBeaumont, James, HUNT SLAYER OF D.M. MURDERED: Ashley Okland

In this episode, we examine the 2011 killing of Ashley Okland, a real estate agent from West Des Moines who was shot while hosting an open house in a model townhome. What began as a routine workday became one of Iowa’s most closely followed unsolved cases. We cover Ashley’s life, the timeline of the investigation, and the major break in the case: the March 2026 arrest of 53-year-old Kristin Ramsey, charged with first-degree murder. We discuss how, despite little being released publicly over the last 15 years, recent filings suggest Ramsey may have been on investigators’ radar from the very beginning. We *might* also have a bonus episode ahead with comments from her attorney, Alfredo Parrish. Sources: Terrell, Laura, West Des Moines police make arrest in 15-year-old cold case of murdered realtor Ashley Okland, KCCI, March 18, 2026Probe continues in agent’s death, Iowa City Press Citizen, May 7, 2011Elmer, Mackenzie, West Des Moines police are no closer to arrest in Okland case, July 30, 2015, Iowa City Press CitizenWingert, Kelby, Prosecutors challenge motion to block cellphone search in Ashley Okland murder case, April 22, 2026, KCCIReal estate agent fatally shot, April 9, 2011, Quad City TimesIowa vs Kristin Ramsey, State’s r resistance to defendant’s motion for bond reduction, Criminal No. FECR051688, April 8, 2026, Dallas County Clerk of District CourtFinney, Daniel, Elbert David, Stegmeir, Mary, Real estate agent killed on the job, April 9, 2011, Des Moines RegisterBelz, Adam, Bemann, Perry, No leads in agent’s shooting, April 10, 2011, Des Moines RegisterAshley Okland Obituary, April 11, 2011, The Des Moines RegisterStegmeir, Mary, Man seen with Okland is sought, April 12, 2011, The Des Moines RegisterEller, Donnelle, Realtors group pushing safety, April 12, 2011, The Des Moines RegisterStegmeir, Mary, 1,600 mourn death of agent, April 15, 2011, The Des Moines RegisterStegmeir, Mary, Search warrant issued in murder, April 16, 2011, The Des Moines RegisterPullman, Jason, Reward to $66,785 in Okland homicide, April 17, 2011, The Des Moines RegisterStegmeir, Mary, Okland case reward sets tip-line mark, April 19, 2011, The Des Moines RegisterStegmeir, Mary, Shooting of agent still mystifies, May 6, 2011, The Des Moines RegisterSearch warrants sealed in Okland case, May 11, 2011, The Des Moines RegisterStegmeir, Mary, Police probe link to agent who killed himself, June 25, 2011, The Des Moines RegisterElmer, Mackenzie, West Des Moines police no closer to arrest in Okland case, August 26, 2015, The Des Moines RegisterWerner, Kyle, Jett, Tyler, Suspect arrested in cold-case shooting, March 19, 2026, The Des Moines RegisterWerner, Kyle, Ramsey maintains innocence, March 20, 2026, The Des Moines RegisterWerner, Kyle, Jett, Tyler, Ashley Okland suspect worked for townhome developer, March 20, 2026, The TribuneEmail correspondence with Mr. Alfredo Parrish, April 24, 2026https://www.courttv.com/news/woman-charged-with-realtors-2011-cold-case-murder-released-on-bond/Support the showIf you have any information on any of the cold cases covered, you can submit a tip here: https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov/for-crime-victims/iowa-cold-case/cold-case-tip-formIf you liked the show and are interested in supporting my work, check out my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CardinalCrimes?utm_campaign=creatorshare_creatorSave $20 on a Buzzsprout paid plan using this referral link!: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=2372693Theme Song: Shrouded Lament by james.lfo, William Claeson

SURVIVED: The Victims of Mike DeBardeleben

Over the past few weeks, we’ve told the stories of the presumed victims of Mike DeBardeleben, those who were murdered or are believed to have lost their lives at his hands. This week, we turn to the stories of several known survivors. Through their experiences, we see the breadth of DeBardeleben’s crimes, the brutality he inflicted, and the varying degrees of justice the survivors received. The victims we’ve discussed, both those who were killed and those who survived, likely represent only a fraction of the true scope of Mike DeBardeleben’s crimes and depravity.Purchase Stephen Michaud’s book “Beyond Cruel” - https://books.apple.com/us/book/beyond-cruel/id6503722963Source: Michaud, Stephen, Beyond Cruel: The Chilling True Story of America’s Most Sadistic Killer, May 1994, St. Martin’s PaperbacksSupport the showIf you have any information on any of the cold cases covered, you can submit a tip here: https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov/for-crime-victims/iowa-cold-case/cold-case-tip-formIf you liked the show and are interested in supporting my work, check out my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CardinalCrimes?utm_campaign=creatorshare_creatorSave $20 on a Buzzsprout paid plan using this referral link!: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=2372693Theme Song: Shrouded Lament by james.lfo, William Claeson

    UPDATE: Keara Coshow

On July 12, 1979, a fire at the Hill Top Motel in Red Oak, Iowa, claimed the life of 3-year-old Keara Coshow. Despite known suspicions of child abuse from Keara's stepmother, Karen, and Keara being nearly blind from an injury many suspect was inflicted upon her by her stepmother, investigators ruled the fire and Keara's death a tragic accident. The investigation was reopened in 2007 and closed in 2010 with the same conclusion: the fire and Keara's death were an accident. But, in 2025, the Iowa Attorney General's Office released a deck of Iowa Cold Case cards, and I was surprised to find Keara's face among them, with her being labeled "homicide victim", and the card stating the fire was ruled arson. I reached out to the Iowa Attorney General's Office and the Iowa Cold Case Unit to request clarification. The Iowa Cold Case Unit responded, and in this episode, I give an update on what they told me: they DON'T know why there is a discrepancy. But they are looking into this case, which I consider a win. If you have ANY INFORMATION at all, please contact the Iowa Cold Case Unit:Their email: [email protected] to my previous episode on Keara Coshow: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cardinal-crimes/id1781462994?i=1000695493302Or watch on Youtube: https://youtu.be/WInjK111ydE?si=YW1dTfJ0UVzArguaSources: Voicemail & phone conversation with Iowa Cold Case Investigator Chad Lovig, November 2025Roy Marshall, Investigation Report Case #7907361, State of Iowa Department of Public Safety State Fire Marshal DivisionState of Iowa Death Certificate (certified reproduction of original record), Keara Coshow, Issued April 23, 2007. Jon Mathis, Closing and Disposition Record Case #0706806, Iowa Department of Public Safety Division of Criminal InvestigationIowa Cold Cases Playing Cards, 1st Edition, Iowa Office of the Attorney General, Department of Corrections, Sheriff's & Deputies Association, Iowa Police chiefs Association, Iowa County Attorneys Association, April 16, 2025Jody Ewing, Keara Coshow Case Summary, Iowa Cold Cases, https://iowacoldcases.org/case-summaries/keara-coshow/Rossi, R., Lodise, M., Lancia, M., Bacci, M., De-Giorgio, F., & Cascini, F. MURDERED: Joe Rapini

This week, we continue our deep dive into the suspected victims of serial predator Mike DeBardeleben. The women we’ve discussed so far were all real estate agents targeted while showing homes to male clients. But today’s case breaks that pattern entirely. In this episode, we examine the murder of Joe Rapini, who was taken hostage alongside his roommate, David Starr. What followed was a calculated and terrifying bank robbery and extortion scheme. Under explicit threats, David, a bank manager, was forced to withdraw nearly $38,000 from his own vault to satisfy the masked gunman’s demands. But even after the money was delivered, Joe Rapini was killed. The extortion money was never recovered. And although Mike DeBardeleben emerged as a prime suspect, he was never formally charged in the case.Join us as we unpack the timeline, the unanswered questions, and what links this case to one of the most methodical criminals we’ve ever covered.Purchase Stephen Michaud’s book “Beyond Cruel” - https://books.apple.com/us/book/beyond-cruel/id6503722963Sources: Phillips, Kate & Mandelaro, Doug, Bank audit shows $37,000 ransom, April 20, 1983, The Times UnionPhillips, Kate & Martelle, Scott, Extortion victim eulogized; ransom drop site revealed, April 19, 1983, The Times UnionMeade, Laura, Trail is cold but search goes on for man’s killer, June 1, 1983, The Democrat and ChronicleMeade, Laura, Gunman wanted 3rd hostage, April 20, 1983, The Democrat and ChronicleMeade, LauraHostage slaying baffles police, April 16, 1983, The Democrat and ChronicleRedmond, Jim, Body found after Greece extortion try, April 15, 1983, The Democrat and ChronicleSearch for leads in slaying, April 19, 1983, The Democrat and ChroniclePhillips, Kate, Witnesses sought in extortion and slaying, April 18, 1983, The Democrat and ChronicleMonroe slaying brings in FBI, April 16, 1983, Press and Sun BulletinPolice hunt clues in extortion murder, April 16, 1983, The Ithaca JournalPhillips, Kate & Mandelaro, Doug, $25,000 ransom drop, 1 dead in bank drama, April 15, 1983, The Times UnionMichaud, Stephen, Beyond Cruel: The Chilling True Story of America’s Most Sadistic Killer, May 1994, St.

    MISSING: Mary "Bo Bo" Shinn

If you have information on this case, contact the Arkansas State Police at 870-777-8944.On July 20, 1978, Mary "Bo Bo" Shinn left to show a client a home she had flipped, but never returned. Her final words to a friend over the phone were "If I don't come back, send someone to look for me". Hours later, her vehicle was found abandoned behind a grocery store. All signs pointed to foul play. To this day, she has never been found. In this episode, we discuss the circumstances surrounding her disappearance, the timeline of her last known movements, the various tips that came in, and recent developments in the case. We also talk about Mike DeBardeleben as a possible suspect, and the similarities between Bobo, Terry, and Jean's cases. Listen to the Trace Evidence episode on this case: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/trace-evidence/id1239217007?i=1000694217709SOURCES:Monae, Chelsea, 44-year-old mystery of “Bobo Shinn” still haunts small Arkansas city, August 18, 2022, KTVE/KARDReward offered for woman’s return, July 25, 1978, The Batesville GuardFamily of missing Magnolia woman increases reward offer to $35,000, July 31, 1978, The Batesville GuardBocklage, Judy, One Officer continues to work on Shinn Case, October 27, 1978, The Batesville GuardSuspect might be questioned in disappearance, February 2, 1984, The Batesville GuardMonae, Chelsea, Haunting disappearance: woman vanished in South Arkansas 47 years ago, July 24, 2025, KTVE/KARDWoman missing, July 23, 1978, The Daily WorldDetective says he has prime suspect in disappearance of Magnolia woman, November 22, 1979, The Shreveport JournalMartin, Phil, The 6-year search for Bo Bo Shinn, October 30, 1984, The Shreveport JournalFoul play is feared, July 22, 1978, The SunReward offered in search for missing woman, July 25, 1978, The SunSecond Reward is Now Offered, July 30, 1978, The SunBocklage, Judy, Another Dead-End in Search, October 27, 1978, The SunNew search for woman launched, July 25, 1978, The Southwest Times RecordMagnolia woman believed abducted, July 26, 1978, The Southwest Times RecordInvestigation of disappearance develops baffling dead ends, October 27, 1978, The Southwest Times Recordhttps://dps.arkansas.gov/law-enforcement/arkansas-state-police/divisions/criminal-investigations/cold-cases/mary-jimmie-bobo-shinn/Trace Evidence: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/trace-evidence/id1239217007?i=1000694217709Support the showIf you have any information on any of the cold cases covered, you can submit a tip here: https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov/for-crime-victims/iowa-cold-case/cold-case-tip-formIf you liked the show and are interested in supporting my work, check out my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CardinalCrimes?utm_campaign=creatorshare_creatorSave $20 on a Buzzsprout paid plan using this referral link!: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=2372693Theme Song: Shrouded Lament by james.lfo, William Claeson

    MURDERED: Edna "Terry" Macdonald

Eleven years before the brutal murder of Jean McPhaul in Bossier City, Louisiana, Edna Terry Macdonald was killed in Barrington, Rhode Island. After the arrest of Mike DeBardeleben, Bossier City investigators began to notice chilling similarities between the two crimes. The cases were nearly identical. From the victims’ professions and victimology to the offender’s MO and the manner of death, this couldn’t be a coincidence. This week, we dive into another murder that DeBardeleben was ultimately indicted for but was never brought to trial. We walk through the timeline of Edna Terry Macdonald’s last known movements, the crime and investigation, and the striking parallels between her case, Jean McPhaul’s, and Dorothy Miller’s.Purchase Stephen Michaud’s book “Beyond Cruel” - https://books.apple.com/us/book/beyond-cruel/id6503722963SOURCES:Michaud, Stephen, Beyond Cruel: The Chilling True Story of America’s Most Sadistic Killer, May 1994, St. Martin’s PaperbacksWoman’s body roped, May 2, 1971, The Democrat and Chronicle Ex-Island legislator’s wife slain, May 2, 1971, Staten Island AdvanceFind murder victim’s car, May 3, 1971, Staten Island AdvanceCustomer suspect, Seek real estate agent’s killer, May 2, 1971, Syracuse Herald JournalR.I. slaying suspect sentenced 100 years, August 3, 1984, The Boston GlobeAccused of killings, torture, ‘Sadomasochist’ draws 100-year term, August 3, 1984, The Morning UnionSentencing due for poison ‘lifer’, May 4, 1985, The Morning UnionSupport the showIf you have any information on any of the cold cases covered, you can submit a tip here: https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov/for-crime-victims/iowa-cold-case/cold-case-tip-formIf you liked the show and are interested in supporting my work, check out my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CardinalCrimes?utm_campaign=creatorshare_creatorSave $20 on a Buzzsprout paid plan using this referral link!: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=2372693Theme Song: Shrouded Lament by james.lfo, William Claeson

    MURDERED: Jean McPhaul

On Tuesday, April 27, 1982, a Bossier City, Louisiana realtor, Jean McPhaul, was brutally murdered by a client who called himself "Dr. Zack". Despite a thorough investigation, the client was able to evade authorities. That is, until the U.S. Secret Service caught James "Mike" DeBardeleben, a notorious counterfeiter. The similarities between Jean's case and that of Dorothy Miller's are ones I can't ignore. This week's episode is the first in a series examining the suspected and known victims of Mike DeBardeleben, and will conclude with a look at his life and crimes. Could Mike DeBardeleben be the man responsible for Burlington, Iowa's oldest cold case? Listen to Dorothy’s episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cardinal-crimes/id1781462994?i=1000743012634Purchase Stephen Michaud’s book “Beyond Cruel” - https://books.apple.com/us/book/beyond-cruel/id6503722963SOURCES: Reward Offered For Realtor Murdered, May 13, 1982, Bossier PressDebardeleben indicted in McPhaul case, June 7, 1984, UPI ArchivesReal Estate Saleswoman Murdered By ‘Customer’, April 29, 1982, The Daily AdvertiserFull-Time Investigation Off, November 5, 1982, The Daily AdvertiserEx-Alabamian found slain in Louisiana, April 29, 1982, The Mobile PressHines, Gary, No arrests in murder of local real estate woman, April 29, 1982, The Shreveport JournalLarsen, Dick, Murder probe shatters peace of neighborhood, April 29, 1982, The Shreveport JournalLarsen, Dick, Mysterious ‘Dr. Zack’ sought in real estate agent’s brutal murder, April 30, 1982, The Shreveport JournalLarsen, Dick, Detectives see no arrest looming in Mrs. McPhaul murder case, May 5, 1982, The Shreveport JournalAuthorities no closer to arrest in McPhaul murder, May 17, 1982, The Shreveport JournalLarsen, Dick, Public asked to aid search, May 18, 1982, The Shreveport JournalHines, Gary, McPhaul suspect Police find ‘solid’ lead in murder, June 14, 1982, The Shreveport JournalHines, Gary, Police eye suspect in McPhaul murder, June 14, 1982, The Shreveport JournalLarsen, Dick, Despite many dead ends, detectives haven’t quit on McPhaul case, July 23, 1982, The Shreveport JournalHines, Gary, Hunt for McPhaul killer fails, November 4, 1982, The Shreveport JournalWaddle, Ray, Realtor found slain in vacant Bossier home, April 29, 1982, The TimesWaddle, Ray, Police get slaying suspect’s description, April 30, 1982, The TimesIvory, Lee, Tuesday began as usual day for realty firm, April 30, 1982, The TimesGingles, Keenan, ‘I guess I was last to see her alive’, April 29, 1982, The TimesMichaud, Stephen, Beyond Cruel: The Chilling True Story of America’s Most Sadistic Killer, May 1994, St.

    MURDERED: Michelle Steele

Last week, we continued examining serial killer Charles Hatcher’s crimes, focusing on the murder of Eric Christgen and the wrongful conviction of Melvin Reynolds. So what was Hatcher doing while law enforcement pursued the wrong man? He was moving across the Midwest, committing additional crimes, and eventually returned to St. Joseph, Missouri, where he murdered another child, 11-year-old Michelle Steele, whose case we’ll be discussing today. In this episode, we look at Michelle’s disappearance and murder, how Hatcher was ultimately caught, and the confession that not only freed an innocent man but also exposed the full scope of his actions. And we ask: how did Hatcher manage to slip through so many cracks in the legal system?Purchase Terry Ganey's book Innocent Blood: https://a.co/d/6fE7rmDSources: Amber Keen, George Lewis, Kara Stone, Andrew Lucas, Charles Ray Hatcher, 2005, Department of Psychology, Radford UniversityKris Jensen, Terry Hughes, Kent Darr, Mike Anton, Gary Sawyer, Beverly Van Hook, The ugly odyssey of Charles Hatcher, May 15, 1983, The Quad City TimesTerry Ganey, Innocent Blood: A True Story of Obsession and Serial Murder, 2016Mathieu, Jordan, Melvin Lee Reynolds, March 13, 2018, National Registry of Exonerations, Michigan State University College of LawGordon, Jeff, Search ongoing for missing girl, July 30, 1982, St Joseph GazetteBurrowes, Mary Helen, Body of girl is found on river bank, July 30, 1982, St Joseph News-PressSupport the showIf you have any information on any of the cold cases covered, you can submit a tip here: https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov/for-crime-victims/iowa-cold-case/cold-case-tip-formIf you liked the show and are interested in supporting my work, check out my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CardinalCrimes?utm_campaign=creatorshare_creatorSave $20 on a Buzzsprout paid plan using this referral link!: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=2372693Theme Song: Shrouded Lament by james.lfo, William Claeson

    MURDERED: Eric Christgen

On Friday, May 26, 1978, the town of St. Joseph, Missouri, was shaken when word spread that four-year-old Eric Christgen had vanished. The search gripped the community, and when Eric was finally found, the relief quickly faded. He had been murdered, and in a way that proved to be one of the most heinous crimes in the town’s history. With pressure mounting to identify the killer, investigators focused on Melvin Reynolds. He did not match witness descriptions of the older man last seen walking with Eric, his alibi was supported by witnesses, and his confession showed clear signs of being coerced. Even so, Reynolds was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. This episode continues where we left off last week, after exploring the early life of serial killer Charles Hatcher. Today, we turn to one of his known victims, Eric Christgen, and the wrongful conviction of Melvin Reynolds. Next week, we will examine another of Hatcher’s victims and the events that ultimately exposed his crimes, cleared Reynolds’ name, and revealed the full scope of the horror that had gone on for years. Purchase Terry Ganey's book Innocent Blood: https://a.co/d/6fE7rmDSources: Amber Keen, George Lewis, Kara Stone, Andrew Lucas, Charles Ray Hatcher, 2005, Department of Psychology, Radford UniversityKris Jensen, Terry Hughes, Kent Darr, Mike Anton, Gary Sawyer, Beverly Van Hook, The ugly odyssey of Charles Hatcher, May 15, 1983, The Quad City TimesTerry Ganey, Innocent Blood: A True Story of Obsession and Serial Murder, 2016Mathieu, Jordan, Melvin Lee Reynolds, March 13, 2018, National Registry of Exonerations, Michigan State University College of LawFrederick Slater & Mary Hellen Burrowes, Body of Christgen boy found on bluff, May 28, 1978, St Joseph News-PressAtkison, Rick, Citizens try to Crack the Christgen Case, August 4, 1978, The Kansas City TimesSupport the showIf you have any information on any of the cold cases covered, you can submit a tip here: https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov/for-crime-victims/iowa-cold-case/cold-case-tip-formIf you liked the show and are interested in supporting my work, check out my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CardinalCrimes?utm_campaign=creatorshare_creatorSave $20 on a Buzzsprout paid plan using this referral link!: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=2372693Theme Song: Shrouded Lament by james.lfo, William Claeson

    SERIAL KILLER: Charles Hatcher

Charles Hatcher was an American serial killer officially convicted of murdering two children, though investigators believe he was responsible for many more assaults and homicides. His life was defined by a revolving door of prisons and psychiatric institutions, where he became known for his repeated escapes and his ability to manipulate his documented mental health issues to feign insanity in pursuit of lighter sentences. In this episode, we’ll explore what is known about Hatcher’s early life and upbringing, trace the escalation of his crimes—from non-violent car thefts to attempted kidnappings and murder—and answer a question that has stuck with me: Was Charles Hatcher responsible for the 1969 murder of Dorothy Miller? Our coverage on Charles Hatcher and his crimes will continue in part two, where we highlight the victims of his horrible crimes. Sources: Amber Keen, George Lewis, Kara Stone, Andrew Lucas, Charles Ray Hatcher, 2005, Department of Psychology, Radford UniversityKris Jensen, Terry Hughes, Kent Darr, Mike Anton, Gary Sawyer, Beverly Van Hook, The ugly odyssey of Charles Hatcher, May 15, 1983, The Quad City TimesTerry Ganey, Innocent Blood: A True Story of Obsession and Serial Murder, 2016Support the showIf you have any information on any of the cold cases covered, you can submit a tip here: https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov/for-crime-victims/iowa-cold-case/cold-case-tip-formIf you liked the show and are interested in supporting my work, check out my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CardinalCrimes?utm_campaign=creatorshare_creatorSave $20 on a Buzzsprout paid plan using this referral link!: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=2372693Theme Song: Shrouded Lament by james.lfo, William Claeson

This week, we are revisiting the murder of Dorothy Miller in preparation for a few episodes highlighting two men who I think are top contenders for the man responsible. The murder of Dorothy Miller is Burlington, Iowa’s oldest cold case. Dorothy was a 48-year-old real estate agent who was brutally murdered while showing a prospective client a home in August of 1969. The man she showed the home to was never seen again, despite Dorothy’s own husband and many witnesses seeing him the day and evening of the murder. This case is baffling, and the behavior exhibited by the assumed killer makes many believe Dorothy wasn’t his first victim… or last. SOURCES (Character limit exceeded, if you'd like to see the full list of sources, send me an email!): Find Saleswoman Dead in Closet, Quad City Times, August 19, 1969Real Estate Saleswoman Found Killed, The Gazette, August 19, 1969Burlington Killer Still At Large, Iowa Press Citizen, August 20, 1969Killer is Still At Large, Quad City Times, August 20, 1969Nick Lamberto, Find Body of Woman Lying Inside Closet, The Des Moines Register, August 20, 1969Burlington Killer Sought, The Gazette, August 20, 1969Sex-Killer Sought at Burlington, The Muscatine Journal, August 20, 1969Hunt Killer of Burlington Woman Stabbed Over 20 Times, The Sioux City Journal, August 20, 1969Suspect Seen in Bar?, Quad City Times, August 21, 1969Death Suspect Seen in Tavern, The Des Moines Register, August 21, 1969Seek Man Seen in Burlington Tavern Monday, The Gazette, August 21, 1969Report suspect in sex slaying seen in tavern, The Muscatine Journal, August 21, 1969Describe Man Sought in Iowa Slaying, The Sioux City Journal, August 21, 1969Support the showIf you have any information on any of the cold cases covered, you can submit a tip here: https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov/for-crime-victims/iowa-cold-case/cold-case-tip-formIf you liked the show and are interested in supporting my work, check out my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CardinalCrimes?utm_campaign=creatorshare_creatorSave $20 on a Buzzsprout paid plan using this referral link!: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=2372693Theme Song: Shrouded Lament by james.lfo, William Claeson

NEWS: The Murder of Amber Czech and Fort Hood OB Allegations

In today’s episode, we go over two recent stories that have a common theme: violence against and a complete lack of respect for women. In Minnesota, 20-year-old Amber Czech was brutally murdered by a male colleague. Why? He didn’t “like her”. At Fort Hood, an Army OB-GYN stands accused of sexually harassing, assaulting, and secretly recording female patients. Allegations that highlight the systemic failure of the military to protect women. We wrap up by reflecting on accountability and the urgent need for cultural change. We specifically call on men, in particular, to take a more active role in challenging misogyny and protecting women. Donate to Amber Czech’s GoFundMe: https://gofund.me/13931a85cIf you were a patient of Maj Blaine McGraw, the Cobos Law Firm is representing many victims and is urging more to come forward. SERIAL RAPIST: Giles Warrick

Between 1991 and 1998 in the D.C. area, ten women were sexually assaulted by a man dubbed the Potomac River Rapist. The last victim, Christine Mirzayan, was murdered. For years, these cases remained unsolved, leaving so many haunted, traumatized, and without answers. In today’s episode, we will discuss each of the victims, the crime scenes, the evidence, and examine what the offender's behavior might reveal about him. Then, we will discuss the eventual arrest of Giles Warrick and whether the evidence and behavior align with what is ultimately learned about him. Listen to the American Nightmare Podcast here: https://americannightmarepodcast.com/\SOURCESFBI. INSANITY PLEA: Andrea Yates

In June of 2001, the world was stunned when news broke that a Texas mother had drowned her five children. Photos of Andrea Yates, her children, and what many considered to be a “picture-perfect family” were plastered across the media, with everyone wondering how something so horrific could happen. In this episode, we look at the events leading up to that day, the red flags that were ignored or minimized, and how Andrea and Rusty’s extreme religious beliefs likely exacerbated her postpartum psychosis. We examine her two trials and the misconceptions surrounding the insanity plea. We discuss how Andrea herself was failed by multiple systems and how the lack of meaningful support for new mothers continues to harm families. We also explore how countries like Sweden and Finland invest in maternal mental health, postpartum care, and family support — and ask why we still don’t offer the same in the United States.SOURCES: Gillespie, S. MURDERED: Connie Ruddy

In 1997, Connie Ruddy disappeared from her home without a trace. Two years later, her jawbone was discovered miles away, confirming her death but offering few clues about what happened to her. For almost three decades, her case seemed cold. Until October of 2025, when investigators returned to her home to search for new evidence. This case is a reminder that all it takes is one piece of information, one new advancement in technology, to change everything for a "cold case". Someone out there knows what happened to Connie. Her death was ruled a suicide. Ellen Greenberg was found dead in her apartment on January 26, 2011, with twenty stab wounds. Fourteen years later, her death remains one of the most controversial cases in recent memory, and her family has been fighting for answers and justice. In this episode, I lay out what is known about the case, using police reports, activity logs, autopsy reports, and more. We will talk about the scene, the investigation, the initial errors, and the most controversial elements of the case. At the very end, I will give my thoughts on this case, but before that, I want you to come to your own conclusion.

Many, including myself, consider Keara's death to be highly suspicious. Over the years, petitions have been created to have the case reopened with no success. But, in 2025, the Iowa Attorney General's Office released a deck of Iowa Cold Case cards, and I was surprised to find Keara's face among them, with her being labeled "homicide victim", and the card stating the fire was ruled arson. Nowhere in the 1979 investigation report, or the records I received in 2024, indicate her case was ever considered to be arson.  Was there a huge update in the case? Has it been reopened? Or did investigators simply copy what crime journalist Jody Ewing wrote on her blog, Iowa Cold Cases, without checking on the official record?I reached out to the Iowa Attorney General's Office and the Iowa Cold Case Unit to request clarification. The Iowa Cold Case Unit responded and I have an update episode published here:Listen to my previous episode on Keara Coshow: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cardinal-crimes/id1781462994?i=1000695493302Or watch on Youtube: https://youtu.be/WInjK111ydE?si=YW1dTfJ0UVzArguaSources: Roy Marshall, Investigation Report Case #7907361, State of Iowa Department of Public Safety State Fire Marshal DivisionState of Iowa Death Certificate (certified reproduction of original record), Keara Coshow, Issued April 23, 2007. Jon Mathis, Closing and Disposition Record Case #0706806, Iowa Department of Public Safety Division of Criminal InvestigationIowa Cold Cases Playing Cards, 1st Edition, Iowa Office of the Attorney General, Department of Corrections, Sheriff's & Deputies Association, Iowa Police chiefs Association, Iowa County Attorneys Association, April 16, 2025Jody Ewing, Keara Coshow Case Summary, Iowa Cold Cases, https://iowacoldcases.org/case-summaries/keara-coshow/Rossi, R., Lodise, M., Lancia, M., Bacci, M., De-Giorgio, F., & Cascini, F. PART 6: Raymundo Esparza, Where the Investigation Stands, and Theories

One name that you will almost certainly find while researching the 1980 murders of Rose Burkert, Roger Atkison, and William Kyle, and the 1970 murder of Jack McDonald is Raymundo Esparza. In this episode, we talk about how he is connected to the case, the evidence (or lack of evidence) against him, and the status of the investigation into his connections to the case. We then explore the theory that all of these murders were sexually motivated homicides, and committed by one serial killer, and wrap up our coverage by going over what I have received back in my records requests. Let me know if you enjoyed this multi-part series or if you prefer one case per episode. Thank you all for listening to this series, and let me know your thoughts and theories! Most importantly, though, if you have any information on of these cases, please contact the Iowa Cold Case unit at the email below, the Galesburg Police Department at 309.343.9151, and the Meridian Police Department at 601.485.1859.Support the showIf you have any information on any of the cold cases covered, you can submit a tip here: https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov/for-crime-victims/iowa-cold-case/cold-case-tip-formIf you liked the show and are interested in supporting my work, check out my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CardinalCrimes?utm_campaign=creatorshare_creatorSave $20 on a Buzzsprout paid plan using this referral link!: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=2372693Theme Song: Shrouded Lament by james.lfo, William Claeson

This could have been a devastating tragedy, but it was stopped thanks to a family member seeing something concerning and reporting it. We talk about how this shooting was averted, the concept of leakage, and why it is so important that the public is educated on the warning signs of mass shooters. I close with a quick rant on what true crime content genuinely terrifies me.Thanks for listening to this quick bonus episode! Learn more about "leakage" and mass shooting prevention here: https://www.theviolenceproject.org/about-us/our-book/SOURCES: https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/man-who-planned-to-shoot-up-atlantas-airport-is-arrested-in-a-terminal-following-a-tip-from-his-family-police-sayhttps://abcnews.go.com/amp/US/boy-school-shooter-ideations-guns-collection/story?id=125369659Support the showIf you have any information on any of the cold cases covered, you can submit a tip here: https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov/for-crime-victims/iowa-cold-case/cold-case-tip-formIf you liked the show and are interested in supporting my work, check out my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CardinalCrimes?utm_campaign=creatorshare_creatorSave $20 on a Buzzsprout paid plan using this referral link!: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=2372693Theme Song: Shrouded Lament by james.lfo, William Claeson

PART 5: The 1970 Murder of Jack McDonald

In October of 1970, a maid at the Travel Inn in Meridian, Mississippi discovered the body of 23-year-old Jack McDonald. He had been murdered by multiple blows to the head with an ax or hatchet-like instrument. The investigation into the murder of Jack McDonald remains unsolved, but today, many believe he may have been murdered by the same man who killed William Kyle, Rose Burkert, and Roger Atkison. In part five we will go over everything we know about Jack's case and the similarities between this scene and the two others we have discussed in this series. We will also take a quick detour and discuss a fleeting theory that Jack's murder was linked to an underground Mafia-esque pornography business (spoiler alert: it was not). Sources:Bell, Dick, Salesman's slaying clues sought, October 29, 1970, Birmingham Post HeraldWhittington, George, Police Seek to Quiz Man About Slaying, October 30, 1970, Clarion LedgerThink Two Murders May Be Connected, December 14, 1970, Clarion LedgerClaybrook, Clint, Jeffco car parts salesman brutally slain in Meridian, October 28, 1970, The Birmingham NewsClaybrook, Clint, Clues absent in salesman's brutal death, October 28, 1970, The Birmingham NewsClaybrook, Clint, Heavy-set young man sought in 'hatchet' slaying, October 29, 1970, The Birmingham NewsClaybrook, Clint, Police hunt 'natty dresser', October 30, 1970, The Birmingham NewsClaybrook, Clint, Police trying to link Meridian, Florida cases, December 9, 1970, The Birmingham NewsMan slain in Meridian, October 28, 1970, The Delta Democrat TimesSearch underway for killer of salesman, December 8, 1970, Daytona Beach Morning JournalSlaying Victim's Car Found in Alabama, December 7, 1970, Fourt Lauderdale NewsSlaying Suspect Search Widened, December 9, 1970, Fourt Lauderdale NewsExcess Fees, December 15, 1970, Fort Lauderdale NewsJurors Get Testimony on Slaying, December 16, 1970, Fort Lauderdale NewsAccused Slayer of Smut Peddler Held for City By St. Louis Police, February 27, 1971, Fort Lauderdale NewsMan Given Life Term in Murder, October 26, 1971, Fort Lauderdale NewsToilet Tank Top Used in Slaying, December 9, 1970, Fort Myers News-PressManhunt Under Way for Slayer, December 8, 1970, The Miami HeraldPolice Identify Man Found Dead, December 8, 1970, The Miami HeraldEgger, Edson, Geiger Report Due Jan 6 Grand Jury Foreman Says, December 19, 1970, The Miami HeraldExtradition of Suspect to be Asked, March 2, 1971, the Miami HeraldPatterson, Robert, Underworld Link to Porno Films, Feb 8, 1971, The San Francisco ExaminerSupport the showIf you have any information on any of the cold cases covered, you can submit a tip here: https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov/for-crime-victims/iowa-cold-case/cold-case-tip-formIf you liked the show and are interested in supporting my work, check out my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CardinalCrimes?utm_campaign=creatorshare_creatorSave $20 on a Buzzsprout paid plan using this referral link!: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=2372693Theme Song: Shrouded Lament by james.lfo, William Claeson

PART 3: The 1980 Murder of Rose Burkert & Roger Atkison, Initial Suspects

The brutal 1980 murders of Rose Burkert and Roger Atkison have puzzled investigators for decades. While suspicion has often fallen on people close to the couple, the list of potential suspects has grown far beyond their inner circle. In this episode, we explore the individuals who’ve been investigated over the years — from those who knew Rose and Roger personally to complete outsiders. We break down possible motives, examine what evidence cleared (or didn’t clear) them, and look at how investigators reached their conclusions. And at the end, we take an unexpected turn: could one “ruled-out” suspect in this case actually be tied to a different cold case we’ve covered?Tune in, then share your thoughts — do you see a connection?Listen to our episode on Dorothy Miller here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cardinal-crimes/id1781462994?i=1000679635755SOURCES: The source list for this case exceeds the character limits. PART 2: The 1980 Murder of Rose Burkert & Roger Atkison, The Investigation

On September 12, 1980, Rose Burkert and Roger Atkison were brutally murdered at a Holiday Inn in Williamsburg, Iowa. To this day, this case remains unsolved. In part one, we went through the crime scene in detail. Today, in part two, we step beyond the crime scene and into the investigation that followed. Who were Rose Burkert and Roger Atkison, and what brought them to that Holiday Inn room on the night of their deaths? We trace their final movements, reconstruct the timeline, and examine how investigators first pursued the case. SOURCES (Full list of sources available upon request; the character limit was reached for this description)Hatcher-Atkison, Marcella, Axed! On September 13, 1980, a housekeeper at the Holiday Inn in Williamsburg, Iowa, discovered a horrifying scene: Rose Burkert and Roger Atkison had been brutally murdered in their hotel room bed. More than four decades later, their case remains unsolved. But could the answers be closer than ever?In part one, we dive deep into the crime scene itself, piecing together details from decades of media coverage and released crime scene photos. The scene is puzzling, but hidden within it may be critical clues about who committed this violent crime.Later in this series we will talk the investigation, suspects, and two other cases that could be linked. PART ONE SOURCES: “Hotel Homicide”, The DNA of Murder with Paul Holes, October 12, 2019, OxygenFBI, VICAP ALERT # 2020-03-03, March 25, 2020Smith, Rick & Burnham, Jeff, Motel ‘fling’ deadly, March 15, 1992, Cedar Rapids GazetteAutopsies: Head blows killed 2, September 18, 1980, The Des Moines TribuneSherman, Cymphanie, Iowa’s Unsolved: Hotel murders still haunt Amana community, 40 years later, May 25, 2021, KGANHayden, Aly, Is a Serial Killer Responsible For 4 Brutal Hotel Murders?, October 12, 2019, Oxygen300 motel guests sought for double-murder clues, September 15, 1980, Quad City TimesOwen, Mike, Inn’s bustle hides shock of slayings, September 16, 1980, Quad City TimesPublic’s help sought in tracing couple, September 20, 1980, Quad City TimesDarr, Kent, One year ago - horror in Room 260, September 14, 1981, Quad City TimesShannon, Vicki, 2 MURDER VICTIMS IDENTIFIED, September 15, 1980, The Des Moines RegisterSupport the showIf you have any information on any of the cold cases covered, you can submit a tip here: https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov/for-crime-victims/iowa-cold-case/cold-case-tip-formIf you liked the show and are interested in supporting my work, check out my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CardinalCrimes?utm_campaign=creatorshare_creatorSave $20 on a Buzzsprout paid plan using this referral link!: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=2372693Theme Song: Shrouded Lament by james.lfo, William Claeson

REVISIT: Dr. Jacquelyn Campbell, Domestic Violence Homicide Risk Factors, the Violence Against Women Act, Abuser Interventions

This week, we’re revisiting a past episode with freshly cleaned-up audio before diving into a brand-new cold case next week. This particular interview is one I’m especially proud of. It was such an honor to speak with someone with such knowledge and dedication to ending domestic violence and pursuing real solutions. I hope you enjoy listening, and as always, I’d love to hear your thoughts! In this episode, I speak with Dr. Jacquelyn Campbell, a national leader in research and advocacy in the field of domestic and intimate partner violence (IPV). She has authored or co-authored more than 230 publications and seven books on violence and health outcomes. Her studies paved the way for a growing body of interdisciplinary investigations by researchers in the disciplines of nursing, medicine, and public health. We discuss the Danger Assessment Tool, behaviors indicating a woman is at a heightened risk of being killed by their partner, the problems with current court-mandated programs for abusers, the Violence Against Women Act, and working with President (then-Senator) Biden on the legislation. https://nursing.jhu.edu/faculty-research/faculty/directory/jacquelyn-campbell/#mediahttps://hub.jhu.edu/2024/09/27/violence-against-women-act-30th-anniversary/https://www.dangerassessment.org/Support the showIf you have any information on any of the cold cases covered, you can submit a tip here: https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov/for-crime-victims/iowa-cold-case/cold-case-tip-formIf you liked the show and are interested in supporting my work, check out my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CardinalCrimes?utm_campaign=creatorshare_creatorSave $20 on a Buzzsprout paid plan using this referral link!: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=2372693Theme Song: Shrouded Lament by james.lfo, William Claeson

She later died from her injuries at an Illinois hospital. While her injuries led investigators to believe she had been struck by a vehicle, the scene as a whole suggested she had been moved, and that she might have been struck on purpose. What happened to Laura Van Wyhe? SOURCES: Smith, Steve, Mystery shrouds death, October 29, 1996, Iowa City Press CitizenObituary: Laura Van Wyhe, October 29, 1996, Iowa City Press CitizenCoroner issues autopsy report on Van Wyhe, October 31, 1996, Iowa City Press CitizenSmith, Steve, Friends create musical event to raise money for victim's son, December 7, 1996, Iowa City Press CitizenSmith, Steve, Iowa City woman’s death no mystery to family, December 13, 1996, Iowa City Press CitizenSmith, Steve, Coroner’s jury unable to determine cause of death, December 14, 1996, Iowa City Press CitizenLang, Craig, Mysterious death still haunts vigilgoers, December 24, 1996, Iowa City Press CitizenSmith, Steve, Van Wyhe’s mom gets custody of grandson, December 31, 1996, Iowa City Press CitizenSmith, Steve, Knight appeals custody ruling, January 4, 1997, Iowa City Press CitizenSheriff’s Officials Identify Dead Woman, October 29, 1996, Omaha World Herald Bullard, Charles, Authorities in Missouri probe Iowa Citian’s roadside death, October 29, 1996, The Des Moines RegisterBullard, Charles, Rumors, questions circulating over death of Iowa City woman, October 30, 1996, The Des Moines RegisterBullard, Charles, Answers sought in death, October 31, 1996, The Des Moines RegisterBulalrd, Charles, Father, grandmother vie for custody of boy, December 13, 1996, The Des Moines RegisterBullard, Charles, Iowa Citian’s death a homicide? MURDERED AND MISSING: Bill and Kay Wood, Part 2

On July 30, 2011, a massive fire destroyed the home of Bill and Kay Wood. One victim was found in the rubble, and testing would later confirm the remains were those of Bill. An autopsy revealed he had been shot several times before the fire. Kay's remains were not found in the home. The couple's vehicle was found during the fire, 170 miles south in Kansas City, MO, and an unidentified male was seen walking nearby. To this day, the cause of the fire remains unknown, the murder of Bill and disappearance of Kay remain unsolved, and the identity of the man observed near their vehicle has never been discovered. In last week's episode, we discussed the details of the case, and in today's episode, part two, we go over the records provided to me by the Iowa Department of Public Safety. While the records don't answer the many questions I have on this case, they provide more detail on the extent of the fire damage, the discovery of the remains in the home, and help to refine the timeline of events. Sources: - Fire Investigation Report, Case # 2011-044536, Iowa Department of Public SafetySupport the showIf you have any information on any of the cold cases covered, you can submit a tip here: https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov/for-crime-victims/iowa-cold-case/cold-case-tip-formIf you liked the show and are interested in supporting my work, check out my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CardinalCrimes?utm_campaign=creatorshare_creatorSave $20 on a Buzzsprout paid plan using this referral link!: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=2372693Theme Song: Shrouded Lament by james.lfo, William Claeson

MURDERED AND MISSING: Bill and Kay Wood, Part 1

On July 30, 2011, firefighters rushed to a massive late-night blaze in Norwalk, Iowa. When the flames were finally extinguished, the charred remains of 79-year-old Bill Wood were discovered inside. His wife, Kay, was missing, and the couple’s truck turned up abandoned over 170 miles away in Kansas City, Missouri, with witnesses reporting a lone man walking from the vehicle.Weeks of investigation revealed a chilling detail: Bill Wood hadn’t died in the fire—he had been shot before it ever began. Yet more than a decade later, questions linger. Who killed Bill Wood? What sparked the fire that destroyed his home? Why was their truck in Kansas City, and who was the man witnesses saw near it? INTERVIEW: Frank Figliuzzi, Long Haul: Hunting the Highway Serial Killers, Sex Trafficking, and Solutions

In 2004, an analyst from the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation discovered a pattern of murdered women dumped along the Interstate 40 corridor in Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, and Mississippi. Her work eventually led to the creation of the FBI’s Highway Serial Killings Initiative. In today’s episode, I sit down with Frank Figliuzzi, former FBI Assistant Director and author of Long Haul: Hunting the Highway Serial Killers. In his book, Figliuzzi examines the Highway Serial Killings Initiative and takes readers inside the worlds of long-haul truckers, sex trafficking victims, and the crime analysts working to solve these cases. Our conversation covers the common misconceptions about trafficking victims, the challenges analysts face in connecting cases across jurisdictions, and why long-haul trucking can provide both opportunity and cover for serial killers. We also explore solutions: from efforts within the trucking industry to fight trafficking, to how criminalizing victims only deepens the problem, to the larger cultural challenge of reducing men’s violence against women. If you suspect human trafficking, call the National Human Trafficking Hotline:  1-888-373-7888 or text “HELP” to 233733Check out more resources for victims of human trafficking at: https://humantraffickinghotline.org/enCheck out more of Frank Figliuzzi’s work at his website: https://frankfigliuzzi.com/You can purchase his book wherever books are sold! https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-long-haul-hunting-the-highway-serial-killers-frank-figliuzzi/20575018?ean=9780063265158&next=tSOURCES:Figliuzzi, F. Nine days later, her body was discovered in rural Missouri, hundreds of miles from where she was last seen; she had been murdered. In this episode, we walk through the timeline of her disappearance, the search efforts that followed, the discovery of her remains, and some of the investigative avenues pursued over the years. NEWS: Brian Kohberger's Plea, Jodi Huisentruit Doc, and a Sentencing in the Breonna Taylor Case

In this bonus episode (possibly a recurring segment, we'll see), we’re digging into some of the biggest headlines in the crime space. First, we break down Brian Kohberger’s early July plea in the University of Idaho murders and explore how reported patterns of misogyny may have played a role in his actions. Then, we discuss the new Hulu docuseries Her Last Broadcast, which revisits the 1995 abduction of Jodi Huisentruit. While I haven’t watched it yet, we highlight some key clarifications the series brings to light. Lastly, we reflect on the recent sentencing of a former Kentucky police officer to 33 months in prison for excessive force during the 2020 raid that killed Breonna Taylor. We revisit the circumstances of her death and how demanding police accountability shouldn't be controversial. If you have any information on the abduction of Jodi Huisentruit, call the Mason City Police Department at (641) 421-3636 or email Iowa DCI Special Agent Ryan Herman at [email protected]. You can also reach out to FindJodi, Inc. anonymously on their website FindJodi.com. Listen to The Consult's coverage of Brian Kohberger: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-consult-real-fbi-profilers/id1586909557?i=1000718552448Check out my previous episodes on the abduction of Jodi Huisentruit:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cardinal-crimes/id1781462994?i=1000708972215https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cardinal-crimes/id1781462994?i=1000681367846SOURCEShttps://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/idaho-failed-father-university-idaho-murder-victim-slams-apparent-kohb-rcna216162https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/the-key-evidence-that-linked-bryan-kohberger-to-the-murders-of-4-idaho-studentshttps://findjodi.com/true-crime-docuseries-explores-old-tip-in-jodi-huisentruit-investigation/https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/crime/bryan-kohberger-idaho-murders-wsu-b2278294.htmlhttps://www.congress.gov/117/meeting/house/111301/documents/HHRG-117-JU08-20210311-SD011.pdfhttps://edition.cnn.com/2025/07/21/us/brett-hankison-sentencing-breonna-taylor Support the showIf you have any information on any of the cold cases covered, you can submit a tip here: https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov/for-crime-victims/iowa-cold-case/cold-case-tip-formIf you liked the show and are interested in supporting my work, check out my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CardinalCrimes?utm_campaign=creatorshare_creatorSave $20 on a Buzzsprout paid plan using this referral link!: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=2372693Theme Song: Shrouded Lament by james.lfo, William Claeson

    MISSING: Marc Allen

In the final part of our series on the “milk carton kids,” we turn our focus to Marc Allen, a 13-year-old who disappeared in 1986 under circumstances somewhat similar to that of Johnny Gosch and Eugene Martin. Though Marc’s face never appeared on a milk carton, his case is often linked to Johnny and Eugene. Was there a connection, or are these unsolved disappearances just tragic coincidences? We will examine the details of Marc Allen’s disappearance, explore the theories that have surrounded these cases for decades, and reflect on the impact they’ve had on families, communities, and the national conversation about missing children. If you have any information on the disappearances of Marc Allen, Eugene Martin, or Johnny Gosch, please contact the Des Moines Police Department at (515) 283-4864, or submit a tip to the statewide Iowa Cold Case Unit at 800-242-5100 or [email protected]: COLD CASE: The story of a teen boy who disappeared is told yet again, November 25, 2010, WHO-TV Channel 13No charge in carrier fondling, October 17, 1984, The Daily NonpareilPolice arrest adult carrier on sex charges, October 20, 1984, The Daily NonpareilAlex, Tom, First-degree murder charged in stabbing, February 28, 1984, The Des Moines RegisterAlex, Tom, 18-year-old woman charged in fatal stabbing in D.M., February 28, 1984, The Des Moines RegisterCarothers-Kay, Anne, Ex-newspaper carrier guilty of child abuse, February 7, 1985, The Des Moines RegisterSykora sentenced to 10 years in prison, April 6, 1985, The Des Moines RegisterSantiago, Frank, Police raids find no link to Gosch, Martin cases, March 1, 1986, The Des Moines RegisterCarothers-Kay, Anne & Suk, Tom, Police write of sex abuse to parents, July 10, 1986, The Des Moines RegisterFlansburg, Elizabeth, Grand jury clears officer in gun death, April 22, 1987, The Des Moines RegisterD.M. man given 30 years for six counts of sex abuse, May 30, 1987, The Des Moines RegisterAlex, Tom, At holiday time, missing youth’s mother waits anxiously for a call, December 19, 1988, The Des Moines RegisterAlex, Tom, Skeleton found; link eyed to missing boys, November 13, 1990, The Des Moines RegisterAlex, Tom, Unidentified woman died of blow to head, November 14, 1990, The Des Moines RegisterAlex, Tom, Model of head shown to help slaying probe, January 29, 1991, The Des Moines RegisterBeach, Patrick, Sculpted model helps identify victim, February 2, 1991, The Des Moines RegisterOsher, Chris, D.M. man charged in dismemberment case, May 15, 1991, The Des Moines RegisterOsher, Chris, Polk jury finds Boudinot guilty of manslaughter in death of prostitute, September 24, 1991, The Des Moines RegisterObituaries: Michelle Christine Saul, February 2, 1991, The Sioux City JournalMissing Kids Milk Carton Campaign Outcome, September 4, 2017, The Des Moines RegisterNCMEC Blog, 2024, Milk Carton KidsJohnny Gosch, Missing Iowa Boy, December 2023, CNNSupport the showIf you have any information on any of the cold cases covered, you can submit a tip here: https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov/for-crime-victims/iowa-cold-case/cold-case-tip-formIf you liked the show and are interested in supporting my work, check out my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CardinalCrimes?utm_campaign=creatorshare_creatorSave $20 on a Buzzsprout paid plan using this referral link!: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=2372693Theme Song: Shrouded Lament by james.lfo, William Claeson

    MISSING: Eugene Martin

Almost exactly two years after the abduction of 12-year-old paper boy Johnny Gosch, another young paperboy was abducted. In this episode, we examine the 1984 abduction of 13-year-old Eugene Martin, a Des Moines paperboy whose disappearance prompted national attention and contributed to the launch of the milk carton campaign. We begin with a look at how effective that campaign really was before walking through the known timeline of Eugene’s case. Have you heard of the original milk carton kids?In the first episode of this three-part series, we explore the 1982 disappearance of 12-year-old Johnny Gosch, one of the first missing children to appear on a milk carton. REVISIT: Janine Latus, Domestic Violence, Self Worth, Subtle Red Flags & Her Award Winning Book

We are revisiting this episode as I was able to clean up the audio that was a little off in the original recording! I hope you enjoy it. In this episode, I sit down with Janine Latus, an award-winning journalist, domestic violence survivor, and author of the New York Times and internationally bestselling book If I am Missing or Dead: a Sister’s Story of Love, Murder, and Liberation.Janine’s book is phenomenal, tragic, eye-opening, and relatable. It is a beautifully written account of a woman who escaped years of domestic violence and abuse by men and her sister, who did not. In April 2002, Janine received a call that her younger sister, Amy, was missing. Janine’s response was, “That bastard did it.” Amy had been murdered.Janine and I have a really meaningful conversation about body image and self-worth, the subtle “red flags” in abusive relationships, and the importance of sharing our stories. We talk about the difficult balance of wanting to help the people you love in abusive relationships, but not wanting to push too hard. You can purchase Janine’s book below, which I highly recommend! If you are in or believe you may be in an abusive relationship, help is available. You can visit thehotline.org, call 1.800.799.SAFE (7233), or text “START” to 88788. Buy Janine’s book: https://www.janinelatus.com/writer/book/buy-book/Information on the Duluth Power and Control Wheel: https://www.thehotline.org/identify-abuse/power-and-control/The Danger Assessment: https://www.dangerassessment.org/Support the showIf you have any information on any of the cold cases covered, you can submit a tip here: https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov/for-crime-victims/iowa-cold-case/cold-case-tip-formIf you liked the show and are interested in supporting my work, check out my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CardinalCrimes?utm_campaign=creatorshare_creatorSave $20 on a Buzzsprout paid plan using this referral link!: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=2372693Theme Song: Shrouded Lament by james.lfo, William Claeson

    MURDERED: Corinne Perry

Corinne Perry was last seen at the Highlander Laundromat on April 17, 1983. Her car was left abandoned in the laundromat parking lot, with her clothes folded neatly inside of it. Days later, her purse was found miles away on a bridge. Despite multiple witnesses saying a man -- about 6 feet tall, with a medium build and medium-length brown hair, clean shaven, and wearing glasses -- followed Corinne out of the laundromat, there was no sign of him or her. Her remains were discovered a mile from where her purse was found over a year later, and to this day, her murder remains unsolved. If you have any information on the murder of Corinne Perry, please contact the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation at (515) 725-6010, email [email protected], or contact the Creston Police Department at (641) 782-8402.SOURCESCavallier, Andrea, April 10, 2020, Woman still searching for justice in her sister Corinne Perry’s murder nearly 40 years after she was killed after leaving Iowa Laundromat, NBC News, https://www.nbcnews.com/dateline/woman-still-searching-justice-sister-corinne-perry-s-murder-nearly-n1181291Shaw, Bob, Sep 18, 1984, Call about missing daughter mystifies, unnerves Iowa mother, The Des Moines RegisterLamberto, Nick, May 3, 1983, Witness sought in girl’s disappearance, The Des Moines RegisterSantiago, Frank, July 3, 1983, Creston folks gather to find young woman who is missing, The Des Moines RegisterRaffensperger, Gene, Feb 6, 1984, Search goes on for girl missing nearly 10 months, The Des Moines RegisterSantiago, Frank, Nov 5, 1984, Officers seek Corinne Perry’s cause of death, The Des Moines RegisterSupport the showIf you have any information on any of the cold cases covered, you can submit a tip here: https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov/for-crime-victims/iowa-cold-case/cold-case-tip-formIf you liked the show and are interested in supporting my work, check out my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CardinalCrimes?utm_campaign=creatorshare_creatorSave $20 on a Buzzsprout paid plan using this referral link!: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=2372693Theme Song: Shrouded Lament by james.lfo, William Claeson

    UPDATE: Jodi Huisentruit

This June is the 30-year anniversary of Jodi Huisentruit’s disappearance and abduction. She was abducted from her apartment complex parking lot on June 27th, 1995. I covered this case in a different episode when we sat down with Scott Fuller from FindJodi, but I wanted to present the information in her case in a new format with the upcoming anniversary. In this episode, we will go over the details of her abduction, how she spent her time in the weeks and days before her disappearance, and what investigative paths police have gone down over the years, including some recent updates. The FindJodi website and the FindJodi podcast have an incredible amount of information on Jodi’s case, which I used almost exclusively for this episode. The journalists who dedicate their time to investigating her disappearance and keeping her case in the public eye are incredible, and I consider their reporting to be the most reliable source of information on this case. Consider donating to their efforts, as all of the journalists donate their time, and the donations they receive also help with putting up billboards. The FindJodi website: https://findjodi.comCheck out the FindJodi podcast here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/findjodi/id1514818185Check out our episode with Scott Fuller: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cardinal-crimes/id1781462994?i=1000681367846SOURCES: https://findjodi.com https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/jodi-huisentruit-missing-anchor-evidence-photos/https://findjodi.com/30-years-30-facts/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR59v3hDj89lzOtZ5D1t6vQAqb-_ReRl745001vVm-Xz_apGhpVuyGMxfWc6sQ_aem_f0bKQL8045HCB8w213euRwhttps://globegazette.com/jodis-journal/article_da2f5783-9cb4-5cb8-badc-4580c180c22d.htmlhttps://www.mshp.dps.missouri.gov/MSHPWeb/mpphotos/A1001001A12G24B31555D810131.pdfhttps://www.wsaw.com/2024/11/08/forgotten-wisconsin-cold-cases-who-killed-deidre-harm/Support the showIf you have any information on any of the cold cases covered, you can submit a tip here: https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov/for-crime-victims/iowa-cold-case/cold-case-tip-formIf you liked the show and are interested in supporting my work, check out my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CardinalCrimes?utm_campaign=creatorshare_creatorSave $20 on a Buzzsprout paid plan using this referral link!: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=2372693Theme Song: Shrouded Lament by james.lfo, William Claeson

    MURDERED: Nohema Graber

On November 2nd, 2021, two 16-year-old boys beat their 66-year-old Spanish teacher, Nohema Graber, to death. The reasoning? They were getting bad grades in her class. The murder of Nohema Graber stunned the community of Fairfield, Iowa, and the nation. In this episode we discuss the timeline of events, how the two teens stalked and meticulously planned their crimes, and discuss what transpired at their sentencing hearings. How could two teenage boys do something so depraved? This is the last episode looking at young men who turn to violence, a quick series I wanted to do after watching the Netflix series “Adolescence”. There are so many conversations that need to be had on this topic, and I hope to hear more people having them. SOURCEShttps://www.kcci.com/article/iowa-court-documents-reveal-timeline-of-killing-of-fairfield-spanish-teacher-willard-miller-jeremy-goodale/39517350https://www.kcci.com/article/nohema-graber-memorial-service-spanish-teacher-fairfield/38205043https://cbs2iowa.com/news/local/fairfield-teens-accused-of-murder-in-court-tuesday-asking-for-lowered-bondshttps://abc3340.com/news/nation-world/iowa-teenagers-willard-miller-jeremy-goodale-kill-spanish-teacher-nohema-graber-over-bad-grade-prosecutor-fairfield-high-school-murder-charges-court-documents-phone-computer-snapchat-body-chatauqua-parkhttps://www.iowacourts.gov/courtcases/21483/embed/SupremeCourtOpinionhttps://www.behnerfh.com/obituaries/nohemacastilloycastillo-graberhttps://www.kcrg.com/2025/01/28/court-upholds-sentence-fairfield-teen-convicted-murdering-spanish-teacher-2021/https://www.iowacourts.gov/courtcases/22353/embed/CourtAppealsOpinionhttps://www.kktv.com/2022/05/11/teen-accused-killing-spanish-high-school-teacher-be-tried-adult-judge-ruling/https://lawandcrime.com/crime/teenager-who-helped-beat-spanish-teacher-to-death-over-co-defendants-failing-grade-is-sentenced/ Support the showIf you have any information on any of the cold cases covered, you can submit a tip here: https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov/for-crime-victims/iowa-cold-case/cold-case-tip-formIf you liked the show and are interested in supporting my work, check out my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CardinalCrimes?utm_campaign=creatorshare_creatorSave $20 on a Buzzsprout paid plan using this referral link!: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=2372693Theme Song: Shrouded Lament by james.lfo, William Claeson

    MURDERED: Tristyn Bailey

In this episode, we discuss the tragic murder of 13-year-old Tristyn Bailey by 14-year-old Aiden Fucci. I wanted to cover this case after watching the Netflix series Adolescence, a four-part series that dives into the epidemic of violence against women and girls, the radicalization of young men, and tries to answer the question “Why?”. In this episode, we attempt to answer that same question. We talk about the investigation into the murder of Tristyn Bailey, review police reports from that investigation, and discuss psychologist findings on Aiden Fucci’s mental state. Over the next few weeks, we will dive into similar cases to start more conversations on why young men turn to violence. SOURCES: https://www.firstcoastnews.com/article/news/crime/psychologist-aiden-fucci-trial-sentencing-tristyn-bailey-st-johns-county/77-07c67e99-5630-4f06-a71b-99e44484a567First Coast News, Moment Aiden Fucci learns he will spend the rest of life in prison for murder of Tristyn Bailey, March 24, 2023, https://youtu.be/kHVeJyB9iho?si=65hI_qJ_1igyW6Op Hannon, Kurt, Incident Report Narrative, 6/21/2021, St John’s Sheriff’s OfficeEmily Zemler, With ‘Adolescence,’ Stephen Graham wants you to consider the unthinkable, 3/24/25, Los Angeles Times KeywordsAdolescence, Netflix, Tristyn Bailey, Aiden Fucci, crime, investigation, mental health, youth violence, psychological insights, prevention, societal issuesSupport the showIf you have any information on any of the cold cases covered, you can submit a tip here: https://www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov/for-crime-victims/iowa-cold-case/cold-case-tip-formIf you liked the show and are interested in supporting my work, check out my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CardinalCrimes?utm_campaign=creatorshare_creatorSave $20 on a Buzzsprout paid plan using this referral link!: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=2372693Theme Song: Shrouded Lament by james.lfo, William Claeson

    MISSING: Denise Fraley

When Denise Fraley went missing in 1982, her husband was immediately suspected of having been involved. Not only because of his bizarre and changing stories about what happened to her, but because of a history of domestic violence in their marriage. Over 40 years have passed with nothing bringing investigators or Denise’s family closer to knowing what happened. But will advancements in forensic technology bring the evidence needed to move the case forward? If you have any information about Denise Fraley, please call the Cedar Rapids Police Department at 319-286-5442.If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, help is available. MISSING: Jesse Leopold

On October 13, 2016, Jesse Leopold, 23, left work during the middle of his shift and was never seen again. Days later, his truck was found abandoned at Ledges State Park in Iowa. While multiple searches have been conducted at the Ledges State Park, the current Sheriff openly questions the efficacy of and quality of those previous efforts.Over the last nine years, Jesse’s father Jerry has worked tirelessly to find answers to what happened to his son. Jerry’s own investigation suggests foul play was involved, a theory law enforcement seems to disagree with. If you have ANY information at all on the disappearance of Jesse Leopold please contact the Boone County Sheriff’s Office at 515-433-4786 or send tips to the Iowa Cold Case Unit at cold [email protected] search for Jesse Leopold will be held on March 22, 2025, organized by Boone County Search & Rescue. HOMICIDE: Anthony Mitchell, Part 2

In early 2023 it was revealed that the Walker County Jail in Jasper, Alabama attempted to cover up the abuse and death of an inmate in their custody. The inmate, Anthony Mitchell, was forced to endure horrific conditions at the jail and was repeatedly denied medical treatment. In part 2 of our coverage of this case, we talk about the hours before Anthony Mitchell’s death and the inaction from the staff at the Walker County Jail, the correctional officer who brought this story to a national stage, and how Anthony Mitchell’s death is just one example of a larger problem in this country. If you or someone you know struggles with substance use or mental health, help is available.
