    044: Scheduling for content creators

As a content creator, the thing I struggle with the most is time management. I realised this particularly in 2024 when I set concrete goals. Two blog posts per week; Focus on YouTube; Publish 5 YouTube Shorts every week; One podcast episode per week. I set ambitious goals but didn't have a plan. As a family man with a full-time job, I know I need a plan. I need structure. Daily habits. Tools to help me organise my process. It's all new to me and I'm having a hard adjusting to structure and sitting down each morning, writing, recording, and editing videos and podcasts. Stopping to fulfil my paternal duties, and get things done around the house. I'm writing this on Monday 8th January, 2024. It's exactly 10:00 AM. Do I want to be writing this article? No. I don't. So, I've gone from being a content creator who approaches things willy-nilly to one who's seeking structure and trying to build a business, and my brain hurts. You know those headaches you get when you give up sugar and flour? Yeah. I've been walking around with that headache for two days. But! I'm getting things done. I want to share the things I'm doing to bring structure to my life as a content creator. 1. I've set goals. They're clear. They're concrete. Two blog posts per week: One on Monday at 8:00 AM; and one on Thursday at 8:00 AM. One podcast episode. Because these goals are concrete, I will know when I miss them. 2. Prioritise writing. As a YouTuber, I'm tempted to think in terms of video first. In 2024, writing is the priority. These articles become the stepping stone to YouTube Shorts, Podcast episodes and long-form videos. As I write new ideas spring up and I jot them down for later. Visit my website: https://potbake.com/

043: On becoming a better content creator

Today I want to talk to you about becoming a better content creator. I've been a writer and YouTuber since 2008, but I should warn you: it's only in 2024 that I committed to becoming a better content creator. I may not be the ideal guide. These are merely my thoughts, and how I go about things based on my gut and the articles I read. If you glean something, I'd be pleased to hear. You can reach me on Instagram or X @lyndonbaptiste. Know your audience. If you're still here, chances are you're a content creator who likes to read; or, if you despise reading, you're here because the information is important to you. While your audience probably loves you, ask yourself what are they looking for: Love? Nostalgia? A taste of Trinidad and Tobago? Or Grenada? Are they searching for scenic accommodations on a hillside in St Vincent? Or luxury, all-inclusive hotels? For me, the first step to becoming a better content creator is setting goals and sticking to them. For far too long I've done things willy-nilly. No clear goals. Nothing to aim at. No process. No business plan. No structure. Although I heard successful YouTubers and podcasters preach on the topic. For 2024 my goals are clear. Publish weekly: two blog posts; one podcast episode; at least one YouTube Shorts on weekdays; and one long-form video on Thursdays at 8:00 PM. Find good clients. I've set goals. 042: What drives you as a content creator?

As a content creator, how can I become a professional? Time: I need a schedule. Besides content creation, I have a job. I have a young family. Ideally, I want to spend time with my wife and children on weekends. if I have to work on Saturdays I will, but I don't work on Sundays. There. I know my boundaries. It’s important to know your boundaries. I need a schedule. One that involves writing, batch recording and editing every week; despite the “monotony”. Do what I need to do without complaining. Repeating tasks. Google Calendar will help. Focus: My focus is writing. As I write ideas spring up. I’ve chosen to focus on YouTube because it’s the only platform where I earn revenue as a Caribbean Content Creator. I’ve uninstalled Tik Tok, Facebook Pages and Instagram from my phone, and I’m already reaping the benefits. I’m a solo creator. To maintain focus I’m going to have to back off Understand what drives you. As a content creator I work fluidly when I share grassroots stories. Stories of hardworking people who are easily overlooked. Stories of people who are quietly working, quietly doing what they do without recognition. Recognition is important. When we recognise people and their work we lift something inside them that may not have moved in years. This drives me. 041: How to make music reaction videos on your smartphone

Today we are chatting with Bar Miztah, a Trinidadian YouTuber who creates reaction videos. In the podcast, we dive into his process of creating reaction videos. I was honestly blown away when I learned that he uses his phone. You can listen to the podcast on Spotify. Here are the Key takeaways. Caribbean Content Creators need to invest in themselves. To be taken seriously on the global stage be professional. Where necessary pay for programs and apps to access more features or, say, have an app's watermark removed from your videos. Give your best. Look at the competition. Get a better microphone. Up your game. Love what you do. Be yourself. Before creating a YouTube channel, Bar Miztah stumbled on reaction videos looking for songs. The content creators he looked at would break down bars in the song but he noticed that they would miss things. He pointed this out and his wife suggested that he do it himself. So he did. Everyone has different motivations to create, and that's fine but you must love what you do. 040: Lessons in collaboration

As a content creator I love collaborating with other content creators. I learn from the interaction and realise that I'm not alone, that there's a community of content creators thinking about the things I think about and struggling with the things I struggle with. Collaboration allows you to explore uncharted territory. ollaboration allows for a broader reach. Recently I collaborated with "Life in Grande".Lessons learned1. Establish your purposeWhen we meet Crystal is wearing a branded jersey. Laser focus. She sees herself as a photographer first.Introduce who you are and establish your purpose.Making people comfortable before taking their pictures.Establishing your purpose also involves clarifying misconceptions. For instance, a fish vendor asked is Life in Grande to promote business? No. Life in Grande is about people. It's easier to approach street vendors. BUY IN is important.2. On Imposter syndrome"Imposter syndrome is the internal psychological experience of feeling like a phony in some area of your life, despite any success that you have achieved in that area." 037: A little bit every day

036: I'm a YouTuber from the Caribbean. Here are my big hairy goals for 2024

I’m not in the habit of setting goals. I trust my instinct. For the most part, I wing it. Since 2008 I’ve been winging it as a self-published writer and a YouTuber. I write when I feel like it; record when I feel like it; publish when I feel I like it. Not accountable to anyone, including myself. I guess that makes me an amateur. Right? I want to approach 2024 differently. Set goals. Consistent posting schedules. Commit. Hit them. As you read the goals I’ve outlined please bear in mind that, for the most part, instinct is driving me, and the knowledge of my audience. Hopefully, some of the items can help you on your journey. 4 of my 11 goals are: Understand my audience and genre more. I’m a lifestyle vlogger from Trinidad. I like dark humour, human interest stories and political satire. Through surveys, comments and offline interactions I’m building a clearer picture of what I like versus what my audience wants. Are you considering your audience? Learn more. Read more. Listen to more useful podcasts. Learn from and engage my peers more. Peers like Juma Bannister from Trinidad who produces an extremely useful podcast named Useful Content. Write more. Publish 2 blog posts every week. One on Monday and Thursday at 8:00 AM sharp. Writing is the foundation on which EVERYTHING else is based. Here’s my thinking. If I write more, I’ll generate more ideas. By publishing 2 articles weekly I’ll keep the website fresh. And each article is a potential podcast episode. Select 2 social media platforms and stick to them. I’m hedging my bets on YouTube and… X formerly Twitter. YouTube for video: shorts, long-form and live streams. Although YouTube is a powerful search engine, I know it’s going to be hard to stick to one platform for video. Here’s why: on my Tik Tok and Facebook page, my videos often achieve viral success. But here’s the thing. As a solo creator, it’s impossible to engage with followers in multiple places. Plus my Tik Tok isn’t monetised; neither is Facebook. As a content creator from the Caribbean I haven’t figured out how to monetise either, and there’s little evidence that suggests viewers who discovered my videos on Tik Tok and Facebook jumped across to my YouTube channel which is monetised. Why X? So I can stay abreast of conversations specific to my genre. Publish AT LEAST one YouTube shorts every day. I love creating videos that are under a minute long. Whether it’s political satire, a segment from a podcast, or a family vlog with a voiceover. When it comes to building an audience my most popular short has so far brought in 147 subscribers. More importantly though the time constraint challenges my writing and editing skills. Read the full article here: https://potbake.com/im-a-caribbean-content-creator-here-are-my-10-goals-for-2024/

012: Balancing passion and making a living as a Content Creator

#12 Recently on Clubhouse, I met a content creator from Trinidad, and when I asked him what he was up to, he said, "I'm trying to make a living while being passionate about my work". His words left an impression on me. Because although content creation is a side hustle for me. there are things I'd love to accomplish, things that cost money like sending Farmer Harry to Antigua. Farmer Harry is a farmer who lives off-grid in Trinidad, and he has his own YouTube channel. And sometimes, to make money, it feels like, we have to move away from the things we're passionate about, like writing, singing, and painting. Today we're talking about ways to boost passion and make a living as a content creator. 002: Self-publishing in Trinidad: The Ghost of Caura

#2 We're talking to Lance Baptiste, a writer and content creator from Trinidad and Tobago about his book, The Ghost of Caura. The Ghost of Caura is historical fiction and tells the story of how, in 1945, the colonial government in Trinidad and Tobago dynamited a church in Caura and displaced an entire village to build a dam. 75 years later, a son discovers the journals of his father who lived in the village. In 2021, the son, sitting at a window, writes: Sitting at a window that looks out on the church in Lopinot, I'm beginning to understand how much I did not appreciate my father. Most people begin to truly appreciate their parents when it's too late. I imagine this is the reason I've spent months deciphering his handwriting and trying to reproduce his story as faithfully as possible. Trinidad and Tobago, I feel, deserves the truth, about men like Eusebio, Mr Roberts, my own father and grandfather-Raymond and Popo-and the British's role in destroying a prosperous village.
