Casual Yelling

Mat Elfring is a longtime entertainment journalist with plenty of interviews under his belt. He's also a firm supporter of worker's rights and equality. Casual Yelling is a mixture of both, jumping between interviews with game devs, actors, and more, along with editorializing the current state of the country and how we treat marginalized people and the working class.Yes, this show is all over the place. We're aware.

No Ketchup On Hot Dogs: The Probable History

Do you have strong food opinions? For some reason, I do! "No ketchup on hot dogs" is a well-known cultural staple of Chicagoland. But why? Is it because Chicago just wants some form of identity because everyone won't stop talking about LA and NYC? Maybe... Is it a new thing Chicagoans started doing the past 20 years? NOPE. Is it annoying? Probably, to outsiders. However, I think there is actual reasoning behind no ketchup on hot dogs, and it goes back more than 150 years ago, and it's more than just one event that made this ingrained in Chicagoan culture.Anyway, I yell about hot dogs for almost half an hour and completely forget to cite any of my sources from my research.

The Only Time I Headlined As A Comedian

Casual Yelling is back, with an official third season--after one episode of Season 2. I'm returning to the world of stand-up comedy in the Chicago suburbs, which I was a part of for a little over a decade. Why not kick things off with a bang? I'm talking about the first--and only--time I headlined a comedy show, and the ridiculously weird moment that happened halfway through my set.

WWE 2K26: Ragdolls, Lots of Options, Where's Charles Wright? (Visual Concepts' Bryan Williams Interview)

Continuing the annual tradition of torturing Bryan Williams from Visual Concepts, he is forced back into talking with Mat about some of WWE 2K26's gameplay improvements from last year's edition to 2K26. Do you love talks about wrestler fatigue, ragdoll physics, and why Mat is always mentioning Charles Wright? Then this episode is for you!The second part of this interview is a video component available on Patreon, as I pitch Mat Elfring Showcase Mode for WWE 2K27, where you fight my create-a-wrestlers. The Wrestle Buddies are back bay-bay! Chris Hayner comes on this week, and they discuss about the monetization of WWE 2K26 and the whole Ringside Pass situation. WWE 2K26 MyRise Review

Continuing to dive into WWE 2K26, we're going into story mode... also called MyRise. In order to unlock everything, you have to play through four times. There are essentially two different stories, and I give all my fine opinions about this mode and the best way to play it (with a controller).

    WWE 2K26 Showcase Mode Review

If you know me, then you know I greatly enjoy playing the WWE 2K games. This year, I'm breaking down every single game mode as separate episodes. First up, we're talking about the first thing I play with this series: Showcase Mode. CM Punk is this year's focus, and we're going through the matches, the unlockables, and what worked and didn't work for the mode.

Season 2 Begins! Xalavier Nelson Jr. of Strange Scaffold (Part 1)

It's time for Season 2 of Casual Yelling, which will focus entirely on interviews with indie game developers. First up is friend of the show Xalavier Nelson Jr. from Strange Scaffold. In Part 1, we're discussing Creepy Redneck Dinosaur Mansion 3, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown, and the development of video games in general. Note: This interview took place in early March 2025. Sony's Spider-Man Universe Movies Are All Bland As Hell

We're wrapping up Season 1 of Casual Yelling with a bang: Discussing a line of mediocre-to-bad movies, living in the same shared universe, where nothing makes a lick of sense. I have watched all of Sony's recent crop of live-action superhero movies, and I discuss what they are, my likes and dislikes, and then at the end, I rate them all.

Dungeons And Dragons: Here's A Bunch Homebrew DM Rules I Use

I like TTRPGs. I've been playing D&D and other "yes and" fantasy games for over 20 years, with roughly the same four people in our core group. Over the years, I've DM'd a few times, and I've found that, in certain situations, the core book or DM guide for rules does not work for me, so I made tweaks: homebrewing. So, I talk about these rules, including one that everyone in my group thought was a fake system called "pegs." Yes, pegs is real, and I explain the heck out of that, and other homebrewed rules like death saves, "random hell," fudging dice rolls, non-linear storytelling, improvising based on what characters do, and allowing them to kill themselves because they stole a fantasy submarine and crashed it into a merfolk city, and everyone died.

Hey Gamer's World, Where Are Your Games?

I went to a store called Gamer's World, and I wanted to buy a cool board game. However, the store turned out to be something completely different than what I experienced from there in the past, and I get a little annoyed about it.This was originally a post on Patreon, but I decided to go a bit more in-depth with what happened and trying to prove to you all that I like sports and I also like TTRPGs, and that's fine.

Opening For Wrench (Yes, This Title Makes Zero Sense)

I talk about my first time doing a comedy set on a weekend show and getting bumped by another comedian. This is prefaced by an invitation to do a stand-up set in 2025 and writing a bit about what happened to me. So, um... I'm not doing that show now. There's A Tonal Shift Coming

For the next couple of months, the show will be changing formats--again. Instead of lambasting the job market and how workers are treated, I'll be doing a series of interviews with indie game developers. We'll be discussing the games they are working on and their art. It'll be fun, and it will be so less angry than normal. I also discuss a project I'm working on for this show, which won't arrive for a few months.Anyway, Patreon for early episodes! https://www.patreon.com/c/ImMatElfring

LInkedIn And AI And Speaking Up For Your Career

Is this just a "Here's what sucks on LinkedIn" podcast? I have no idea. This week, we discuss the conversations I had online with tech bros about how my career is dead because AI can data scrape writing. It's quite a bit of me reading posts and then a lot of not-so-casual conversation about how content creators need to speak up for their livelihoods and tell tech bros to buzz off.

    Tipping Waiters: YPOLAOYAAA

On this week's adventure of me stumbling upon a bad LinkedIn post, I discovered someone in the replies about American tipping culture who hated tipping. I break down this person's post about their feelings--many of which I agree with--but focus on why they're an a**hole and why they're lying about having ever worked in the service industry. I also discuss the whole aspect of the service industry being a mess for employees. Remote Work: YPOLAOYAAA

This week, I saw a post on LinkedIn about remote work that I found a bit enraging and talked about why everyone should work in an office again--mainly because "that's what we did before the pandemic." I discuss why the post is problematic and what's wrong with it. Video Games Haven't Changed Their Prices In Decades, So Why Is Everyone Mad?

DLC. Microtransactions. In-game currencies. It's a part of the majority of Triple A games now, especially ones that have yearly releases. Is this something people should be mad about? I don't think so. Why? The price of games hasn't changed since the late-80s. It's all $60 and more. I explain the lack of inflation over the past 40 years, the amount of people that work on games now, and the pressure developers are under to put out these games.Honestly, there's a lot of talk about inflation here. And I will eventually discuss game developer abuse and payments for them, but that episode will come later.

Pineapple Belongs On Pizza, And You Should Shut Up

"I'M RIGHT AND EVERYONE IS WRONG" -All of us on the internet. The debate no one should be having: "Pineapple doesn't belong on pizza!"It's silly. It's stupid, and yet, I'm talking about it. Why? Because I love irony. This go-around, I'm discussing pineapple on pizza, the way we engage with each other online, and get way into when we should respect people's opinions and when we should fight them.

Why Are Facebook Grifters Obsessed With Sam Elliott?

Prior to the 2024 Presidential election, I noticed something on Facebook that felt like it popped up in my feed every third post: Sam Elliott poorly photoshopped, looking like he's holding a political t-shirt with the loudest opinions on them. Wrestlemania XL was a fun, wild WWE event, but the aspect of being surrounded by people that also love wrestling was a little tough, for me, as I didn't have anyone to share the joy with. Breakfast Lasagna: Matt Drufke

During a gaming session of Pulp Cthulhu, my friend, Dan Jackson, found his character on the dining car of a train in the 1930s. He was asked what he would like for breakfast. Jackson yelled, "Breakfast Lasagna." This led to a conversation between the six of us playing: What is Breakfast Lasagna? With that thought in mind, I decided to ask my guests the same question. Stand Up Comedy (With Matt Drufke)

Also known as "Papa Suburbs," comedian Matt Drufke had a large hand in building the Chicago Suburbs Comedy scene in the early 2010s. He showed up to my house early in the morning with coffee and donuts, and we talked fondly of our memories of the early years of the scene and what it was like to grow said scene over the years.Links!Still Not Friday comedy showcase: https://www.facebook.com/snfcomedyTwitter: https://twitter.com/IHateMattDrufkeBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ihatemattdrufke.bsky.socialThreads: https://www.threads.net/@ihatemattdrufkeCasual Yelling links!Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/casual-yelling/id1723929468Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1n38HpSX7QrEjoVaVVKPIRAudible: https://www.audible.com/pd/Casual-Yelling-Podcast/B0CRCV7NYYIHeartRadio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-casual-yelling-140667728/

Stand Up Comedy (With Knowledge Fight's Jordan Holmes)

I spent a lot of time doing stand-up comedy, from 2007-2018, roughly. Ok, so it’s not that long, but one of the friends I made along the way was Jordan Holmes. This week, Jordan and I reunite, and no it’s not on his Twitch stream. We discuss the suburban comedy scene during the late-’00s and how it started to grow, how stand-up comedy can be weird, and a bunch of other things.Go listen to things Jordan does:Knowledge Fight podcast: https://knowledgefight.com/His book, The Quiet Part Loud: https://www.thequietpartloud.com/Casual Yelling Links!Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/ImMatElfringFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/casualyellingYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZjyYDXKPivcWp9-JUTCxJg

Stand Up Comedy (With What Had Happen News' Xavier Lamont)

Xavier Lamont has been involved in the stand-up comedy scene for well over a decade. He got his start at an open mic in my hometown, where I was apparently very nice to him. He's travelling the country telling jokes on stage. Now, he's moved into a YouTube series called What Had Happen News, which is an animated series featuring commentary on whatever is happening in the country. Below, you'll find links to all the things Xavier is up to. Being A Punk Rock Musician (With Death Pose's Jason Thompson)

The singer of Death Pose, Jason Thompson, comes on the first official episode of Casual Yelling. It's a bit of a bouncy interview as we discuss Thompson's band and his transition from full-time guitarist to singing, along with his evolution as an artist. On the flip side, Thompson and I discuss the Tri-Cities punk scene between 1998-2004, a bustling scene of DIY bands in the western suburbs. Performance Art Metal (With Cealed Kasket's Josh Shenk)

This is a reupload of an episode of I Just Wanna Talk To FriendsWhen I was in film school, a band called Cealed Kasket found me on MySpace. After going to a couple of shows, I became obsessed with the pageantry, costumes, over-the-top stage show, and fake blood. I became the band’s videographer, and eventually, I became a character who was part of the mythos and stage show. Reunited after almost 10 years, I speak with Josh Shenk, the singer of the band under the guise of “Mortal Death,” and we discuss what the band was, why they made people in the audience wear crowns, and what it’s like to be in character all the time—even if you’re being invited to judge a battle of the bands and show up with a giant broadsword and a bunch of knights. There’s also a lot of talk about making bizarre video fliers for shows and everyone coming together to make a music video that completely rips off another music video.Links!* Cealed Kasket on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/2cbO04MwWdUMbWoKqoKi91* Moral Death’s Cealed Kasket videos: https://www.youtube.com/@mortaldeath/videos* Check out some of our videos we filmed during the Kasket Days: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLA3627C2D0C694D5C

    Layoffs: Yelling Casually

In an off-the-cuff, unscripted video, I discuss the current state of layoffs and what we can do to endure this problem. Writers, game devs, artists: We're all facing uncertainty, so how to you weather the storm? I don't know, but I discuss my experience of being laid off more than a year ago and how I tried to weather the storm myself.
