All of us receive messages from our parents at an early age that we carry with us into our adult life, often without realizing it. These messages can be useful, but they can also inflict unintended emotional damage on us and others. In this episode we discuss two messages we each received in our childhood, the way those impacted us, and how reducing their influence is possible once you identify them.

Fathers often see (or hope to see) sons in their image. But from the beginning, there are two unique identities. Fathers have hopes and expectations while sons comply or rebel. We talk about two shared memories where there was an attempt to honor our unique identities. We give our individual perspective on each and explore why one didn't go as expected and the other met with mutual respect.

So much between fathers and sons can be lost in translation. We wanted to take you to the exact moment when we each knew that our relationship had fundamentally changed. They are not the same moment yet both offer a window into the transition from parent child to an adult to adult relationship.

Hopefully, this will be the start of a new conversation whether you are a father or a son. Uncommonly vulnerable, we don’t preach or offer fix it formulas. Instead, we offer hope through a long gritty reality that very close friendships are possible.
