    Ep. 006 | Special Services

In this episode Malorie, discusses her experience navigating the special education system for her son. She explains the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which provides services for children with disabilities from birth to age 21. Malorie highlights the importance of language and advocates for calling out bias, sharing her experience with an elderly teacher who used the word “normal” to describe her son. The IEP process involves a referral, evaluation, and annual meetings to develop a service plan. Parents should read the draft plan before the meeting and consider hiring an advocate to ensure their child receives necessary services. Accommodations, such as visual models and repeated directions, are tailored to the child’s needs and can be beneficial for all students. Gifted education varies by state, with Colorado using ALPs (Advanced Learning Plans) and Virginia utilizing TAG (Talented and Gifted) programs. While some states mandate gifted education plans, others focus on providing services. Twice-exceptional students, identified as gifted and with a disability or health impairment, require specialized support to meet their unique needs. A 504 plan is for individuals with impairments that limit major life activities, such as self-care and learning. It can be beneficial for college and the workplace, as IEPs end at 21. ... Ep. 005 | Mentors & Coaches

In this episode we discuss the challenges of being a new teacher, including the high attrition rate and the need for better support. They suggest improving pay, addressing social-emotional needs, and celebrating teachers’ accomplishments to retain them. Additionally, they highlight the importance of a positive school culture and effective mentoring programs. The current induction process for new teachers in Colorado, which includes monthly meetings and CLDE classes, is overwhelming and could be streamlined. Mentoring is valuable for new teachers, especially when it comes to communicating with parents. The lines between mentoring and coaching can be blurred, but mentors should focus on being supportive partners rather than providing direct instruction.Coaching in education focuses on building teacher capacity through academic content, teaching practices, and strategies. A coaching cycle typically involves pre-observation meetings, lesson observation or co-teaching, and data-driven feedback. Effective coaching involves setting achievable goals, utilizing high-leverage teaching practices, and providing constructive feedback to support teacher growth and improve student performance.Mentoring and coaching are valuable for teachers, providing support and guidance. Ep. 004 | Private Schools

In this episode we discuss our experiences as educators, specifically focusing on Malorie’s two years teaching at a private Catholic school in Ohio. Malorie enjoyed her time as an interventionist, noting the supportive parents and students. She also shares a heartwarming story about a student’s excitement for her growing baby bump.Malorie recounts her teaching experience at a private school, highlighting the freedom and support they received from the principal, a nun. We also discuss the Colorado evaluation system for teachers, which includes informal and formal observations, a rubric, and student learning objectives. Greta’s parents sent her to private school for a better educational experience, preferring a smaller school environment.Private schools offer smaller class sizes and high expectations, but lack diversity and can, in some cases, reject students with disabilities. While they foster a strong community among parents, it does have some draw backs depending on the student. The cost of tuition can be a significant drawback.  Things to consider as a teacher are the lack of union representation and often lower teacher salaries. We’d love to hear your thoughts and opinions.  Please leave a comment and check us out on our website and social media!Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chalkitout_podcast/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@chalkitoutFacebook: Chalk It OutYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@chalkitout

    Ep. 003 | First Month

In this episode we discuss the first month of school. It is crucial for setting routines and expectations in a well-organized classroom, including color-coding materials, clear labeling, and dedicated spaces for learning activities and supplies. Establishing clear expectations and routines, such as assigning student jobs and using a number order system for tasks, fosters responsibility and streamlines the learning environment. Practice and reinforce routines until they become automatic, utilizing positive narration and engaging activities like classroom scavenger hunts to build student confidence and comfort. Prioritize understanding each student individually by reviewing academic and support plans, respecting their fresh start, and collaborating with colleagues. Building relationships through correct name pronunciation, student surveys, conversations, activities, and communication with families is essential for a positive learning environment. Finally, collecting baseline data during this period allows for planning meaningful and differentiated instruction tailored to student needs.Websites with ideas: 8 Classroom Seating Arrangements11 Color Coding Hacks for an Amazingly Organized ClassroomAmazon| Ticonderoga Pre-Sharpened Pencils
