Minneapolis: Insights on the Ground (Hour 2)

Jamie and Brian kick off the second hour of Civic Media Mornings with a prerecorded interview with Lt. Diane Goldstein (Ret) Executive Director of Law Enforcement Action Partnership talking about ICE’s memo about warrants. In the hours and days after the shooting, tensions grew between federal and state authorities over how the investigation is being handled, with Minnesota officials pushing for independent oversight and a judge ordering the preservation of evidence after state attorneys challenged DHS’s control of the scene. Federal agencies like the Department of Homeland Security have defended the use of force, while lawmakers from both parties — including Republicans calling for transparency and Democrats opposing Homeland Security funding tied to enforcement oversight — have used the case to demand answers about federal immigration operations. The controversy has highlighted broader debates about use of force standards, federal authority versus local jurisdiction, and the lack of released body-worn camera footage, even as protests and political responses continue across the country. Susie Jones, Minneapolis-based WCCO Radio anchor and reporter, joins the show. She covers breaking news, public safety, and major developments happening in Minnesota. ICE, Lies, and Video Tape

Welcome to Civic Media Mornings with Brian Noonan and Jamie Martinson! The first hour centers on who Alex Pretti was and the conflicting narratives surrounding his death during a federal immigration operation in Minneapolis. It lays out Pretti’s background as a Green Bay native, former athlete, Boy Scout, and ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA, described by family, colleagues, and neighbors as compassionate and community-minded. This contrasts those accounts with claims by DHS and Border Patrol leadership that labeled Pretti a violent threat, then walks through video evidence and eyewitness testimony that appear to contradict key assertions, including whether Pretti brandished a weapon, resisted violently, or posed an immediate danger. Audio cuts from Gov. Tim Walz and others underscore calls for accountability, while additional reporting highlights unanswered questions about use of force, lack of released body-camera footage, and the emotional toll on those who worked alongside Pretti, including a colleague who declined to appear out of fear and grief. In Green Bay, reporter Connie Fellman documented a cold-weather rally that drew an estimated 1,500–2,000 people protesting ICE.
