The Law That Upended Food Carts (Unintentionally)
In 2023, the Nevada legislature passed a bill regulating sidewalk vendors. You know, the people who sell corn and shaved ice in various parks, and near your grocery store. The law, SB92, was the first ever to regulate these micro-businesses. Many of the people who run food carts are immigrants, who are reaching for the American dream. But the regulations didn’t turn out the way the backers of the bill expected them to.Where there were no laws, now there are very very restrictive laws. And many food cart operators were scared their businesses would be shut down.Definitions of regulations on sidewalk vendors. How to apply for a license. Here's how to get in touch with Senator Fabian Doñate.Guests: Senator James Ohrenschall, County Commissioner Tick SegerblomHere's the website for the Legislature. Puppy Mills and Animal Overcrowding
Last summer, Henderson police went to a house to investigate a complaint from a neighbor. Police found the owners were running a puppy mill. That is, they were breeding young, female dogs and selling their pups for $2,000-$5,000.The residents had 39 dogs. 34 of them were French Bulldogs. Four of them were pregnant. There were also two horses, over 100 chickens and a couple of goats, according to Clark County Animal Protection Services - which most people just call Animal ControlAll of those animals were taken to the Animal Foundation. This made overcrowding at the Foundation a lot worse. And it’s been pretty bad for a while. The team decided to look at this topic because... well... PUPPIES! But also because it is a demonstration of how civics work when neighboring municipalities don't coordinate. It's hard to ban pet stores - as Clark County and North Las Vegas did - when pet stores are perfectly legal in Henderson and Las Vegas.Guests: Jerrica Owen, National Care and Control AssociationLori Heeren, Nevada SPCAHilarie Grey, Las Vegas Animal FoundationPet Hotline: 702.955.5932 (Lost or Found)Petco Love Lost

Introducing the Civics Radio Network
The Civics Radio Network came out of a collaboration between Carrie Kaufman and Ashton Ridley to develop programming for KUNV Radio that had to do with civics and young people. They hit upon a 2-step process: a bootcamp to teach students civics and journalism, and a podcast for them to share what they learned. Ashton and Carrie talk about the process while sharing clips of students' reactions at the end of the bootcamp.

You May Not Live in Las Vegas (Even if you live in Las Vegas)
So... Las Vegas isn't really in Las Vegas. Most people who live here don't know that. And most people who live here don't live in Las Vegas. About 650,000 people live in Las Vegas proper. That's represented by the green areas of the map above. The blue area is North Las Vegas - which is an actual city, not a description. Almost 300,000 people live there. A bit more than that live in Henderson, which is shown on the map as purple. But the orange part? That is the biggest area on the map? That's unincorporated Clark County. Which has more than a million people. Who don't live in Las Vegas.Fun fact, also: the Strip is not in Las Vegas. It was fun exploring this with our students, and with historians Sondra Cosgrove and Michael Green. The first step to understanding how to be a citizen in Southern Nevada is to understand how the governments in Southern Nevada operate. If you want a street light to be fixed, you need to know where you live in order to call the right people to fix it. Frequently, people are angry because they can't vote for Mayor of Las Vegas. And, of course, journalists outside of Vegas swoop in when there's a political forum or a mass shooting and all ask to speak to the Mayor - even though that job may not have jurisdiction for what's being reported. We encourage you to explore Clark County at https://maps.clarkcountynv.gov/openweb. Where do you live? Who owned the house you grew up in? We'd love to hear what you find on our Instagram page, CivicsRadioLV. There are boards for each township, but they aren't cities, and the government is Clark County.
