Clueless Kennel Chats

Welcome to Clueless Kennel Chats, where we, Whitaker and Sydney, navigate the chaos of raising animals in college armed with curiosity, caffeine, and a questionable amount of Google searches. We're not certified trainers (far from it), but we're learning as we go through trial, error, and advice from random Reddits. From training triumphs to public embarrassment, we're sharing the real, unfiltered journey of figuring it out one really long day at a time. Join us as we blurt, bark, and learn our way through the world of animals, because clueless doesn't mean hopeless.

    Episode 2: Canine Companions

After the longest wait ever, here you go, Episode 2! We raise Chia and Carina through Canine Companions, a national nonprofit that gives individuals with disabilities highly trained service dogs free of charge. Learn about volunteering through Canine Companions, types of working dogs, and the puppy raising process. *Our opinions are not affiliated with Canine Companions or any Collar Scholars club. We did our best to get all information through Canine.org*NOTE: After a TON of research I could not find a lot of credible information on therapy dog legal requirements. We could be wrong about therapy dogs, please get your information from a reliable source as we are “Clueless”Intro: 0:00Canine Companions: 0:34Types of Dogs 1:59 Process 11:16Breeder/Caretakers 12:15Canine Alert 17:34Duke Puppy Preschool 19:10Puppy Raising 20:14Prison Programs 23:05Puppy Raising 23:45Professional Training 25:07Types of Dogs 26:46FAQs 28:09Do therapy dogs need certification?A therapy dog is a pet that accompanies their owner into specific settings for the benefit of the residents or clients in the setting and/or as part of a therapeutic intervention. Our therapy dog program provides formal therapy dog certification for Canine Companions eligible teams in all regions within specific geographical locations. There was a ton of misinformation out about certifications for ESAs and service dogs, so to clarify, ESA certifications can ONLY BE RECEIVED through a medical professional. You do not register online. Service dogs DO NOT require certifications in the US. The two questions businesses may ask are: is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? And what work or task has the dog been trained to perform? Please make sure you refer to the ADA website when you have questions about working animals. Do Breeder/Caretakers get first right of refusal for their dogs?According to Canine.org, they are offered the first right of refusal to adopt puppies released before they are placed with a puppy raiser. From asking other raisers, B/C USUALLY get first right of refusal with the breeder dogs over puppy raisers. All adoption processes are subject to change depending on Canine Companions. All dogs are “owned” by Canine Companions, so whatever happens after they are retired or released is ultimately up to the organization. What is LIMA training?LIMA stands for least intrusive, minimally aversive. It is a style of dog training that prioritizes the well-being of the dog above all else. It uses the most positive and gentlest methods to understand the root cause of behavioral issues and creates positive learning environments.More information:Canine.org Inside the Mind of a Dog (Netflix)Therapy Dog Info: https://canine.org/get-involved/therapy-dogs/ LIMA: https://enviroliteracy.org/what-is-the-lima-method-for-dogs/
