    AC/DC - Unpacking the Lethargic Rise of Public L2 Charging | Coast-to-Coast EVs #57

Why aren't we further along with public destination charging in North America? Filling your battery when and where the EV is parked is usually cited as the main advantage of electric vehicles. It's typically cheaper, more convenient, and reputedly better for battery longevity. But that advantage is usually raised in terms of home charging. Away from individual dwellings, public AC charging is often labeled too slow for an hour or two stop and too inconvenient for renters or visitors to use unless it's right on-site. As a result, excitement around new L2 deployments is muted compared to flashier DC Fast Charging, and key charging solutions like curbside charging in cities and AC charging in parking garages remain stuck in pilot programs or in limited-access locations. In this episode of Coast-to-Coast EVs, we explore the largest L2 providers in the US and Canada, the different types of AC charging locations, and reasons for the relatively lethargic pace of L2 deployments, even as DCFC posted a record-setting year in 2025. We also discuss the overlap with low-power DC charging (25-50kW), and get your take on the most compelling places for L2 to be deployed.Host Channels:Eric/News Coulomb -    / @newscoulomb3705  Walter/The Network Architect Channel -    / @thenetworkarchitectchannel  Resources/channels mentioned in discussion:Alternative Fuels Data Center Listing for L2 (US + Canada) - https://afdc.energy.gov/stations#/ana...Technology Connextras -    • Don't overthink electric car charging (we ...  STL EV Info -    / @stl_ev_info  The Arkansas eTraveler -    • Walmart EV Charging Just Dropped HUGE Hints  Chapters: 0:00 - Start2:30 - 200K AC Ports But Still L2 Lethargy5:12 - Our Public L2 Experiences17:04 - L2 in US/Canada By the Numbers23:00 - DCFC Boom vs. Underinvestment in AC 32:45 - Varying Use Cases for Public L2 Charging43:52 - Co-location of L2 and DC Fast Charging Options1:00:00 - Distributed Power DCFC and Adjusted Charge Times1:04:20 - Higher Power AC or Lower Power DC for Medium Dwell Times? 1:23:27 - Projects in the Pipeline + Close1:26:40 - ⚡Cheers, Nerds!🤓 Hosted on Acast. NEVI Survived... But Do We Still Need It? | Coast-to-Coast EVs 49 with AP1/Jacob Espinoza

Many wrote off the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, even before a tumultuous period in which federal funds were paused for the first half of the year. Nonetheless, it survived the legislative onslaught, won key legal battles, and emerged delayed but unscathed. The last few months saw states getting approval for federal funding to deploy EV charging once again, including in locations that had previously declined to participate. But funding resumes at a time when privately-funded projects are driving a DCFC boom across the United States, often at the same locations that NEVI sought to fill when the first plans were drawn up four years ago.All of which prompts the overarching question: do we still need NEVI?The Coast-to-Coast EVs crew is joined by Jacob Espinoza, an experienced voice in EV infrastructure, especially in the desert southwest region covering Arizona,, Texas, and his home state of New Mexico. The quartet unpack the four corners of the country and everything in between to share which states are doing what, and how it's integrating with massive private sector projects from IONNA, Walmart Energy, Mercedes-Benz, the major truck stop chains, and many more.Related links from the discussion:Jacob's Ko-Fi - https://ko-fi.com/artiepenguin1Rivian Roamer Charger Report - https://rivianroamer.com/charging/reportWalter's Carolinas DCFC Construction Tour - https://youtu.be/dR4P7Pk72gY?si=Eax1SJFSaXdnGUwQSteve's multi-vendor Northeast to Midwest Tour - https://youtu.be/wsZomrANqCA Hosted on Acast. Rethink Fueling: Charging as an Experience or Post-Hoc EV Purchase Rationalization?

Join Eric, Walter, and Steve, for a discussion on the EV charging experience: should it be as fast as gas, or are we missing an opportunity to reimagine the way we travel? This topic is inspired by Eric's recent News Coulomb video on the overlap between public EV charging and "the holiday paradox". There's plenty to dig into, but I suggest taking in the video and its related articles before joining the conversation:News Coulomb on EV Charging + The Holiday Paradox - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmVaKTYW7xUBackground on the Holiday Paradox Concept - https://www.lifeafterthedailygrind.com/p/the-holiday-paradox-how-to-slow-down-timeRangeway Energy's response article + take on charging hospitality - https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/why-worked-fine-still-feels-like-failure-rangewayenergy-isqbcAnd to extend the idea, what if charging was designed to be a desirable experience, rather than an unavoidable distraction? As California-based charging startup Rangeway Energy wrote in response to Eric's video:"In hospitality, when someone's going to be in your space for 35-55 minutes, that's your entire business model. Hotels, restaurants, cafes want people to stay. We design around making those minutes valuable and comfortable. [The charging industry] thinks in kilowatts and uptime percentages. In throughput and app interfaces. None of them think in dwell time and customer experience." -- https://rangeway.energy/Alternatively, is all of this thinking just post-hoc mental gymnastics to justify purchasing a vehicle that can't (yet) fuel up in five minutes? Is the rush to 500kW, then 600kW, then megawatt charging and beyond the only path to electric vehicles being accepted by mainstream drivers?Check out the conversation, after a quick look at the US October EV sales slump in the wider context of surging global sales, in the latest episode of Coast-to-Coast EVs. With EV adoption breaking 10% of new vehicle sales and used EV sales strong, are we close to overburdening the public charging stations available, or in the pipeline for the near future? This installment of Coast-to-Coast EVs focuses on a discussion we had in June, where the idea of "overbuilding" charging infrastructure was raised. It generated some vibrant debate in the comments and we promised to unpack the idea further, so here's your chance! The discussion considers all angles of the charging buildout in the United States and Canada to answer a simple question: are we at risk of building more chargers than we need?We also cover a busy week of new charging partnerships, from Toyota swelling the IONNA ranks to eight OEMs to BP Pulse becoming the latest entrant to increasingly crowded parking lots at Simon Properties and Mercedes-Benz juicing up I-5 with new Alpitronic 400 kW Hyperchargers at Starbucks locations.Timestamps:0:00 - Start1:15 - NEWS: New Charging Partnerships13:10 - Viewer Intros & Comments18:37 - DCFC Overbuild... Regional DC Fast Charging & EV Adoption | EVolve New York | Fisker Woes - Coast-to-Coast EVs # 11!!

Special guest John Markowitz, Head of Emobility at the New York Power Authority, joins Eric, Walter, and Steve to discuss building out one of the nation's largest regional fast charging networks. In a week when the International Auto Show hits New York City and spring travel is about to get underway, EV infrastructure is about to be tested again. State-level networks like NYPA's EVolve NY have emerged as an important piece of the charging puzzle, opening up access to routes that the national players haven't yet focused on. This conversation covers the planning, difficulties, and opportunities of building out fast charging infrastructure in a state with more than 2,000 miles of road designated as Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFC).Learn more about EVolve NY here: https://evolveny.nypa.gov/Learn more about New York state's EV incentives and adoption here: Drive Clean Rebate for Electric Cars Program - NYSERDA Hosted on Acast. Station Location: Where Do You Want to Charge? | Coast to Coast EVs 9

Join Eric, Walter, and Steve for another fortnightly fast charge on EVs and infrastructure, this time covering the best (and appropriate) locations for DC fast charging. In the wake of IONNA announcing its early plans, we pondered on the last live stream where the 30,000+ stalls, which equates to several thousands new charging stations for just one network. Toss in new Tesla Superchargers, more EVgo and Electrify America, then potentially hundreds of new charging providers and we have to ask: where will these chargers go?Chapters:0:00 - Start1:22 - Intro2:03 - In the News: Honda Prologue Arrives13:22 - Ultium Platform & Chevy Silverado EV Rollout15:54 - Viewer Questions & Comments20:26 - Location, Location, Location: Where Do We Want to Charge?28:16 - The Importance of Electrify America and Walmart29:48 - Grocery Stores and EV Charging34:30 - Guest Intro: Jacob/ArtiePenguin135:45 - Exploring DC Fast Charging in New Mexico36:15 - Jacob's 2022 Kia #EV637:45 - New Mexico Charging Maps40:30 - Tesla Superchargers in NM41:22 - Chargers Coming Soon in New Mexico44:34 - The Future of Francis Energy Charging Sites47:11 - The Impact of Heat on DC Fast Chargers54:25 - Love's & TCA Truck Stop Charging 59:40 - Viewer Comments & Questions1:00:28 - Charging at Hotel Locations1:14:57 - Different Levels of Location: Gas Station vs. Truck Stop | Grocery Store vs. Walmart 1:21:29 - Matching Dwell Time to Site Usage1:29:40 - J3400 and 277V / 48A Level 2 Charging1:30:05 - Closing Comments + PlansThe beauty of EV charging is that it is passive, so the driver can walk away and do something else while the vehicle "refuels".
