This week, Brian, Chris and Andy focused on discussing current political and economic challenges in Virginia, particularly around Virginia’s economy and the upcoming gubernatorial election. The hosts discussed the impacts of federal layoffs, tariffs and other economic issues before transitioning to Governor Glenn Youngkin and the race between Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle Sears and Democratic nominee, Abigail Spanberger. They examined campaign strategies and polling data. The discussion concluded with broader conversations about the President's Executive Order on flag burning, a quick look at possible 2028 Presidential options, the need for political reform - including ballot access reform - and ended on a hopeful note about continuing efforts for a more free and prosperous Virginia and America. Relevant links to today’s episode:Economic forecast says Virginia will lose jobs this year, have virtually no job growth in 2026Youngkin promised a ‘rip-roaring economy.’ Did he deliver? Gerrymandering America and Trump’s Washington, DC Takeover

This week, Brian, Chris and Andy discussed gerrymandering, particularly in response to President Trump's push for redistricting in Texas to secure more Republican seats. Brian and Chris highlighted the irony of both Democratic and Republican governors engaging in redistricting efforts to gain political advantage, despite the negative impact on fair representation. They proposed proportional representation and ranked choice voting as potential solutions to minimize the politicization of redistricting and shared information about Virginia's Redistricting Commission as an example of a state attempting to reduce political influence in the redistricting process. The discussion then shifted to President Trump's actions in Washington D.C., including the federalization of DC police, the deployment of the National Guard and both concern and skepticism about the motivations behind these measures.  Relevant links to today’s episode:Texas Democrats once again thwart GOP-led redistricting effort as standoff enters its second weekBlue-state Republicans sound alarm on redistricting tit-for-tat Mid-decade redistricting unlikely in Va., but Democrats are considering changes to the state’s map-drawing process Virginia Redistricting CommissionFair Representation Act (United States)Trump to Deploy National Guard to D.C., Take Over City’s Police DepartmentMike Masnick on BlueskyTrump moves forward with plans to take control of DC police. In this 75th episode, Brian, Chris and Andy explored ideas in liberalism, including a recent article arguing that liberalism is more than solely striving towards greater freedom but also stands as the bulwark against abusive behavior. They also touched on Virginia’s upcoming elections while looking at the recent stand by Maine’s Secretary of State as she resisted Department of Justice efforts for state voter information. Virginia Politics: book bans and (lack of) election competition, plus reflections on Trump at six months

Virginia Politics: book bans and (lack of) election competition, plus reflections on Trump at six months. This week, Chris and Andy look at a recent report covered in the Cardinal News regarding book removals from Virginia school libraries and the broader issue of book bans in educational settings, emphasizing the importance of diverse literature and local decision-making. The report reveals that while most school systems in Virginia didn't remove any books, 223 different books were removed statewide over the past five years. Five counties, led by Hanover County with 125 removals, accounted for 75% of all book removals. In contrast, 63% of school systems, including Fairfax County, removed no books at all. They also examined the state of electoral competition in Virginia's upcoming elections, noting the lack of independent candidates and the need for ballot access reform to increase political choices. The discussion concluded with some thoughts on the Trump Presidency at six months and concerns about political division and partisanship, while maintaining hope for a better future. A More Attractive Alternative: Making the Economy Work for All of Us.

A More Attractive Alternative: Making the Economy Work for All of Us. Brian, Chris and Andy discussed a recent Charlotte Clymer article, which criticized the current economic system and expressed support for democratic socialist policies. The discussion explored alternative liberal approaches to address economic challenges facing young people and working-class individuals. They agreed that many people feel disconnected from traditional economic opportunities and debated the merits of free market solutions versus centralized planning, with particular focus on housing, healthcare, and regulatory barriers. They discussed the challenges of cronyism and proposed practical solutions verses utopian free market or socialist ideas. The discussion concluded with agreement on practical steps to improve economic opportunities through local initiatives and policy changes, emphasizing free market solutions and innovation to improve economic opportunities for all. Relevant links to today’s episode:This System Doesn't Work for Any of Us Virginia & Other News:What is Liberalism? Chris, on the other hand, was more optimistic about the possibility of real choice and more dynamism in elections. They looked at John Reid, the Republican candidate for Lt. Governor and a striving independent candidate, Marlow Jones, before reviewing the Democratic field. Wednesday’s Headlines: Harris Wins, Congress divided! Trump says election stolen! Voters want better candidates.

Episode 44: Wednesday’s Headlines: Harris Wins, Congress divided! Trump says election stolen! Voters want better candidates. The team discussed their thoughts and concerns about the upcoming US Presidential election, focusing on the potential for election violence and the expectation of misinformation. They also predicted the outcomes of the federal elections, including the potential for improvements in abortion rights and the passage of marijuana legalization measures. The conversation ended with a call to action, encouraging individuals to engage in dialogue, think for themselves, and to consider alternative solutions for the future. And a reminder that a lot of our current concerns have long been a part of this country. “Complaints are every where heard from our most considerate and virtuous citizens, equally the friends of public and private faith, and of public and personal liberty, that our governments are too unstable; that the public good is disregarded in the conflicts of rival parties; and that measures are too often decided, not according to the rules of justice, and the rights of the minor party, but by the superior force of an interested and overbearing majority.” - James Madison, of Virginia, on the dangers of elections resulting in overbearing majorities who respect neither justice nor individual rights, Federalist 10 (1788)   Relevant links from this episode include: The 10 states where the right to an abortion is on the ballot in 2024 Which states are voting on legalizing weed? Breaking down the Telegram arrest; Marveling at the very illiberal Donald Trump

Episode 36: Breaking down the Telegram arrest; Marveling at the very illiberal Donald Trump. ‘It's all just absolute nonsense’-Brian. Brian, Chris and Andy further reflect on the recent arrest of Telegram’s CEO in France and explore if this is an attack against encryption, a fight against crime, or something more. They then pivot to discussing recent remarks made by former and aspiring future President, Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania where, “Trump railed against the ‘fake news’ and ‘Comrade Kamala’ Harris and reiterated his arguments that drug dealers should get the death penalty and those who burn the American flag should get a mandatory one-year sentence in jail.” The irony of calling Kamala Harris comrade before assaulting the Constitution was not lost on our podcast team.    The CLPVA platform on Digital Privacy and the War on Drugs:   DIGITAL PRIVACY & FREE SPEECH Digital communication has supplanted the pen and paper as the primary channel by which individuals share their private ruminations and desires. While the Constitution was authored centuries before our modern technology could have even been imagined, the principles therein apply no less to our contemporary forms of communication and expression than to those in use during the founding of our nation. Encryption, being a tool to enable those private correspondences, is a human right critical to securing the freedoms we have under the Bill of Rights. As such, we: Support end-to-end encryption and oppose legislation and law enforcement action to break encryption. Oppose warrantless surveillance of individuals in the United States or Americans abroad. Oppose any measures by government authorities to censor digital speech   END THE DRUG WAR The Drug War has been a disaster for all communities and people within the Commonwealth, through the explosion of incarceration, police militarization, seizure and forfeiture laws, and other numerous ill effects, without stopping or even curbing the use of drugs and the social ills of addiction and overdose rates. We therefore call for the immediate end of the Commonwealth’s participation in the drug war, including: A full and unconditional legalization of the personal use and commercial sales of Marijuana and related products, with no special or additional burden of taxation or regulation. Decriminalization on a state level for all other “hard drugs”, and an official policy of non-cooperation with Federal Drug Enforcement operations.
