The Pattern That Keeps You in Toxic Relationships w/Anette Nilsson

Welcome to Compassiviste Dialogues. I'm Ali, your host, and my mission with this podcast is to shed light on critical social and environmental issues worldwide, exploring avenues for positive change. In this conversation, Anette Nilsson shares her journey of self-discovery, healing, and resilience. She discusses the early signs of toxic love, the impact of illness on her life, and the importance of connecting with oneself. Through her experiences, she emphasizes the significance of acceptance, compassion, and the distinction between belonging and merely staying in a place. Annette also explores the role of spirituality and nature in her healing process, ultimately defining home as an internal state of being connected to one's true self. In this conversation, the speakers explore the themes of compassion, spirituality, and personal transformation. They discuss the importance of understanding one's connection to the universe and the feminine force of compassion that guides us. The concept of 'soul happy' is introduced as a state of authentic living, emphasizing the need for individuals to reclaim their joy and connection to themselves. The dialogue also touches on the role of education in fostering compassion and the necessity of personal accountability in creating a better world. The speakers reflect on their journeys of finding God and the impact of privilege on the path to soul happiness, ultimately advocating for a compassionate approach to life and society. ABOUT GUEST: Anette Nilsson is a self-led entrepreneur and former tech consultant turned full-time writer, the guest has walked a hard-won healing path. After confronting severe Crohn’s disease and the fallout of an unhealthy lifestyle, they discovered the deep link between physical recovery and what they call “soul happiness”—and the role that soul unhappiness can play in illness. Drawing on nutritional, spiritual, and self-development practices, they now share practical tools, resources, and grounded wisdom to help others move from depletion to wholeness. Writing has long been their metier and compass, carrying them through setbacks to become an empowered author and soulful storyteller committed to helping people live more authentic, happier, and balanced lives. KEY NOTES: • What Anette wishes she knew before marrying a toxic/narcissistic partner: how they spot “easy prey” and how they hook you (and switch when they sense you pulling away). • How shame can keep someone stuck and isolated and why reclaiming power matters. • “Don’t blame the narcissist” (not to protect them to take your power back and stop repeating the pattern). • Why social media can normalize narcissistic behaviors and amplify narcissistic tendencies. • Illness as a wake-up call: Crohn’s, autoimmune symptoms, and how Anita links healing to truth, trauma, and emotional roots. • “Home” as an internal state: the difference between belonging vs. staying somewhere. • “Viking resilience,” acceptance, and why self-compassion matters more than numb stoicism. The Biggest Mistake Modern Activists Make w/Kumi Naidoo

Welcome to Compassiviste Dialogues. I'm Ali, your host, and my mission with this podcast is to shed light on critical social and environmental issues worldwide, exploring avenues for positive change. What is the real legacy of activism? In this powerful conversation with Kumi Naidoo, one of the world’s most influential voices on climate justice and human rights, we explore why activism wins battles but rarely wins the war and what must change for movements to create lasting systemic equity. This interview uncovers the deeper truth behind activism’s failures, its victories, and its future. In this dialogue, Kumi explains why climate activism has kept humanity alive “by a thread” and reveals how ordinary people not political leaders have always been the real drivers of justice. He also shares the emotional story of his friend Lenny, whose philosophy reshaped his understanding of sacrifice and lifelong dedication to justice. ABOUT GUEST: For over 40 years, Kumi Naidoo has been a voice amongst many for social, economic and environmental justice. From his humble township upbringing in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, to his work as an anti-Apartheid activist, to his leadership of international NGOs, Kumi has remained rooted in Martin Luther King’s Creative Maladjustment principles - refusing to normalize inequality and devoting himself to exposing injustice. Kumi was International Executive Director of Greenpeace International, from 2009-2015, and Secretary General of Amnesty International, from 2018-2020. As of June 2020, he is Global Ambassador for Africans Rising for Justice, Peace & Dignity. He has served as the Secretary-General of Civicus, an international alliance for citizen participation, from 1998 to 2008. Kumi has also served the Global Call to Action Against Poverty and the Global Call for Climate Action (Tcktcktck.org), which brings together environmental aid, religious and human rights groups, labour unions, scientists and others and has organised mass demonstrations around climate negotiations. In this next chapter of his activism journey, Kumi is dedicating himself to getting back to his 'roots', with a focus on contributing more to the growth of activism movements and organisations, academia, as well as paving the way forward for a new generation of activists.  KEY NOTES: Why activism rises and falls like tides and why that’s normal Why ending apartheid did not end inequality The brutal truth about climate negotiations and COP failures The dangers activists face worldwide (4 environmental defenders killed weekly) Why leadership “is not the problem our dependence on leaders is” Why activism must shift from charismatic leaders to people-powered movements TIMESTAMPS: 00:00 - Intro 02:30 - What Is the True Legacy of Activism? 09:43 - When Activism Outlives the Activist 13:35 - Is Activism Becoming an Industry? 18:45 - Do Movements Without Laws Fail? 29:33 - What’s the Point of a Protest With No Endgame? 44:46 - Can You Change a System? 01:07:13 - Activism Through Compassion 01:10:28 - Letters to My Mother 01:11:55 - If You Had The Power… 01:13:20 - Outro THINGS MENTIONED IN THE PODCAST: Website: https://www.kuminaidoo.net/ X: https://x.com/kuminaidoo Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kumi-naidoo-073ab723/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kuminaidoo Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@kuminaidoo804 Medium: https://medium.com/@kuminaidoo Kumi's Book: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Letters-My-Mother-Making-Troublemaker/dp/1431432881   TO LEARN MORE AND STAY CONNECTED: 🌐 Visit our website: https://compassivistedialogues.com/ 🎧 Listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6qt8cYHeIcDmDV8zPKNxMw 🎧 Listen on Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/compassiviste-dialogues/id1735926709 CONNECT WITH US ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/people/Compassiviste/61555898333856/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/compassiviste/ Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@compassiviste Twitter: https://twitter.com/compassiviste LinkedIN: https://www.linkedin.com/company/compassiviste/ Tune in, follow, and embark on this insightful journey with us. Global South, Greenwashing, and Why Local Wins Aren't Enough w/Claire Bartlett

Welcome to Compassiviste Dialogues. I’m Ali, your host, and my mission with this podcast is to shed light on critical social and environmental issues worldwide, exploring avenues for positive change. Today I’m joined by Claire Bartlett—award-winning author, archaeology nerd, and my coauthor on The Hollow Age to separate real progress from sustainability theater and ask the tough question: how do we act ethically inside systems built for convenience and profit? Drawing on Claire’s archaeology background and lived view from Denmark, we unpack election promises vs. follow-through, pilot programs (like free public transit), and why local wins still need global coordination. We also get practical about publishing, platforms, fast fashion, and the “no ethical consumption under capitalism” dilemma without shame, with solutions where they exist. What began as a philosophical question became a story world readers can feel—then a wider conversation about accountability, culture, and the costs we push onto the Global South. Stay to the end for a dramatic reading from Chapter One of The Hollow Age. ABOUT GUEST Claire Bartlett lives in Copenhagen, Denmark, where we try to defeat climate change with our bicycles. When Ali contacted her about a collaboration with Compassiviste she was excited to work on a novel that doesn't try to sugarcoat the trouble our world is in, but doesn't try to convince us it's hopeless, either. No matter how bad things get, helping each other is the best and only way to make them better again. KEY NOTES Sustainability Theater vs. Progress: Promises, power, and follow-through. Pilot vs. Planet: Why free transit pilots can’t solve a global problem alone. Platforms & Publishing: Amazon’s gravity, “hybrid” authorship, and real constraints. Hidden Costs: Fast fashion, “buying local” illusions, and dropshipping realities. Culture & Morality: Why preserving history shapes our ethics now. Capacity Mindset: Direct your money, align compassion with action. TIMESTAMPS 00:00 Episode Trailer 01:20 Intro 06:07 How The Hollow Age turns ideas into a felt world (archaeology to story) 11:53 Pilots, coalitions, and Denmark’s reality check on free transit 16:21 Promises vs. proof: politics, scale, and accountability 20:25 Fast fashion, “local” myths, and solutions without shaming 20:52 Books, Amazon, and authors inside platform capitalism 57:18 Protest with your money: aligning values with spend 58:13 Culture under threat: Baghdad, Ramses II & why preservation matters 1:21:21 Capacity mindset & practical compassion 1:24:03 Reading: The Hollow Age — Chapter One (Bologna, bad-air dawn) THINGS MENTIONED IN THE PODCAST The Hollow Age  - https://www.amazon.com/Hollow-Age-Ali-Horriyat-ebook/dp/B0FK7KY3GG TO LEARN MORE AND STAY CONNECTED 🌐 Website: https://compassivistedialogues.com/ 🎧 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6qt8cYHeIcDmDV8zPKNxMw 🎧 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/compassiviste-dialogues/id1735926709 CONNECT WITH US ON SOCIAL MEDIA Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/people/Compassiviste/61555898333856/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/compassiviste/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@compassiviste Twitter/X: https://twitter.com/compassiviste LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/compassiviste/ Tune in, follow, and embark on this insightful journey with us. Columbia-trained and clinically grounded, Tessa was once on the fast track through the healthcare system—until she realized its biggest failures weren't science, but of soul. Today, she’s pioneering a new model of wellness that blends trauma-informed healing, neuroscience, ancient practices, and AI-powered coaching. In this episode, we dive into how Tessa’s journey disrupted traditional medicine, why she believes healing must go beyond management to true transformation, and how science and spirit can come together in practical, life-changing ways. We also explore the challenges of accessibility and the vision for making healing available to everyone, not just the few. ABOUT GUEST: Chief Executive Officer and Lead Trauma-Informed healing Facilitator Tessa brings a rare blend of strategic healthcare expertise and deeply embodied healing practice. With a background in Health Policy and Management from Columbia University, she has led physician practice operations in both integrative medicine and mental health clinics, focusing on optimizing systems that prioritize patient experience, access, and impact. Tessa’s professional path has always been rooted in one question: How can we make alternative healing therapies more understandable, accessible, and backed by science? This curiosity has led her to study the brain and nervous system through the lens of trauma, altered states of consciousness, and embodied healing. She is trained in mindfulness and meditation, somatic breathwork, psychedelic integration, and flow state facilitation, weaving these modalities into the fabric of VISUALIZEin360’s offerings. As a trauma-informed healing facilitator, Tessa is passionate about creating spaces that support emotional safety, nervous system regulation, and inner transformation. Her leadership is driven by a belief that people deserve tools that meet them where they are and are grounded in both science and spirit.  KEY NOTES: From Medicine to Meaning: What led Tessa to pursue healing beyond traditional healthcare Healing Through Connection: Can community-based care return to modern life? Leading with Wholeness: Developing Servant Leaders at Scale w/Dr. Max Klau

Welcome to Compassiviste Dialogues. I'm Ali, your host, and my mission with this podcast is to shed light on critical social and environmental issues worldwide, exploring avenues for positive change.  Today we’re joined by Dr. Max Klau, a Harvard-trained developmental psychologist, leadership educator, and founder of the Center for Courageous Wholeness. Max designs scalable approaches to inner development and servant leadership and guides people through his transformative online workshop, Leading with Wholeness. Beyond academia and leadership development, Max also fronts the Max Klau Band, exploring the surprising connections between music and leadership. In this episode, we dive into Max’s journey of discovering his calling, simplifying leadership, and creating transformational programs that serve both individuals and society. We explore how mission and shadow shape authentic leadership, why inner work must meet compassionate action, and how one accessible book can spark generational change. ABOUT GUEST: Dr. Max Klau is an author, coach, developmental psychologist, and the founder of the Center for Courageous Wholeness. His life’s work sits at the intersection of inner development and systems change, helping individuals and organizations serve others, confront their shadows, and scale inner development. After two decades designing transformational leadership programs at City Year and the New Politics Leadership Academy, he has refined an approach that views leadership as a Dual Journey—integrating inner and outer change. This combined focus on impact and inner development is, in his view, essential for meeting a moment of unprecedented change and uncertainty. His book, Developing Servant Leaders at Scale: How to Do It and Why It Matters, explains a methodology rooted in humility, purpose, and the courage to do the inner work. At the Center for Courageous Wholeness, he offers coaching, retreats, keynotes, and organizational consulting—built around one core truth: inner and outer change are too interconnected to separate. Dr. Klau partners with values-driven leaders, teams, and communities ready to grow, serve, and lead with wholeness. Whether navigating a personal crossroads, leading a team through uncertainty, or embedding purpose into a large system, he helps guide the journey. How Play & Movement Heal Relationship Trauma | The Science of Connection with Peter Andersen

Welcome to Compassiviste Dialogues. I'm Ali, your host, and my mission with this podcast is to shed light on critical social and environmental issues worldwide, exploring avenues for positive change. Today’s guest is Peter Andersen, a marriage and family therapist and somatic movement specialist who bridges dance and therapy to help people heal and connect more deeply. In this episode, Peter shares his journey navigating identity, trauma, and social division, while challenging us to rethink success and the purpose of capitalism. Through his unique perspective, we explore how movement expresses what words often cannot and why compassion is essential for healing. ABOUT GUEST: A love story rooted in movement, healing, and play. Before The Playful Couple came into existence, Peter Andersen spent 25 years as a contemporary dancer and choreographer. For him, movement was a first language—one that taught him how to be present in the body, trust its internal rhythms, and explore the rich, creative ways humans relate to themselves and to one another. Later, Peter’s path led him to the world of comedy improvisation in New York City. He became the founder and director of an improv company, where, night after night, he stepped into the unknown—discovering how play, trust, and connection could transform not only performance, but also relationships. Alongside his artistic work, Peter immersed himself in deep personal development. He became certified in NLP, Timeline Therapy, Thai Massage, Craniosacral Therapy, and earned a Master’s in Leadership and Change. He studied Polyvagal Theory, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Nonviolent Communication (NVC), mindfulness, and the wisdom of the nervous system. Each modality provided him with a new lens on what it means to be in relationship—with the body, with ingrained patterns, and with others. But Peter’s journey wasn’t purely professional. For many years, he struggled in long-term relationships—grappling with fear, loneliness, and disconnection. The turning point came when he began to understand his own needs, honour his nervous system, and trust what he was authentically drawn to. This internal work eventually led him into the most loving, secure, and joyful relationship he could have imagined. What began as a personal healing journey now unfolds in the relationship he shares with his partner—their playful love story is the living, breathing proof of this work. And that is how The Playful Couple was born. Undiagnosed ADHD: The Real Reason Behind Repeat Offenders? with Sarah Templeton

Welcome to Compassiviste Dialogues. I'm Ali, your host, and my mission with this podcast is to shed light on critical social and environmental issues worldwide, exploring avenues for positive change. I’m honored to welcome Sarah Templeton, a passionate advocate for ADHD awareness, author, and campaigner driving systemic change across education, mental health, and the criminal justice system. Sarah’s work sheds light on the often overlooked crisis of undiagnosed ADHD, especially within prisons, addiction centers, and homeless shelters, where some of society’s most vulnerable people fall through the cracks. As the author of How Not to Murder Your ADHD Kid and a key voice within the UK government’s APPG for ADHD, Sarah fights for mandatory ADHD screenings in prisons and police stations to help break the cycle of unnecessary incarceration. In this episode, we delve into her journey, the urgent reforms required, and how early intervention can transform lives. ABOUT GUEST: Sarah Templeton is a passionate advocate for adolescents and adults with either unrecognised, and therefore undiagnosed, or late diagnosed ADHD.  She has seen the catastrophic effects of the condition not being diagnosed early enough. Her decades volunteering and working with the homeless, serving & ex-offenders and addicts had flagged up the disproportionately high amounts of ADHD in these groups; who have such an easily treatable condition which had been allowed to destroy their lives. Purely because nobody including teachers, CAMHS, GPs, probation, the police and prison services and charities working in the sectors haven’t spotted it. KEY NOTES: What is ADHD, and Why Is It Overlooked in Prisons? How Do Geography and Social Class Affect ADHD Diagnosis Behind Bars? The result was her middle-grade novel Shannon's Odyssey, written for adventurous animal-lovers. A year later, while in treatment for cancer, she wrote the first of the Bit Players series to fill the void of fiction for music and theatre-loving teens. The YA series now has three books, and appeals to all teens not just drama-loving ones. Her first adult novel (thankfully not prompted by another health crisis!) was Horseshoes and Hand Grenades, published in 2019. The story is a coming-of-age tale about two young women starting their careers in Boston while dealing with past and present demons.  Her latest novel, Beautiful and Terrible Things, was released by Black Rose Writing in Summer 2024 and has won numerous awards, including Indies Today Best Literary Book of 2024. The same characters are featured in her award-winning novelette, The Wallace House of Pain (available on Amazon).  KEY NOTES: - From Business to Fiction: Can Writing Be a Path to Healing? - Is Charlie a Symbol of Personal and Social Awakening? - The Challenge of Writing Authentic Diversity in Fiction - Storytelling’s Role in Fostering Social Harmony - What Defines a Great Leader in Today’s World? A Survivor’s Journey from Exploitation to Freedom – Cults Exposed w/Daniella Mestyanek Young

Welcome to Compassiviste Dialogues. I'm Ali, your host, and my mission with this podcast is to shed light on critical social and environmental issues worldwide, exploring avenues for positive change. And today, we’re honored to share the incredible journey of Daniella Mestyanek Young. Raised in the notorious Children of God cult, Daniella escaped and transformed her life, ultimately becoming a U.S. Army captain and intelligence officer on the frontlines in Afghanistan. Her bestselling memoir, praised for its powerful storytelling, has been compared to Educated and The Glass Castle. In this episode, we’ll dive into Daniella’s path to success, her insights into the complexities of group behavior, and her work in leadership and organizational psychology. Daniella now shares her expertise as a TEDx speaker and Harvard graduate, exploring the fine line between culture and cults and the impact of powerful leaders on society. Stay tuned as we discuss Daniella’s mission to educate, her work on breaking free from the past, and the lessons she’s learned along the way. Let’s get started! ABOUT GUEST: Daniella was born a third-generation member of the infamous Children of God religious cult, and grew up being trafficked around the world, before escaping that life and moving to America at age 15. She put herself through high school and graduated as college valedictorian before commissioning into the US Army as an intelligence officer. That’s where she really started to think about group behavior…and seeing it, well, everywhere. Daniella deployed twice to Afghanistan (2011, 2014) and became a member of one of the Army’s first Female Engagement teams (an experiment that put women into deliberate ground combat for the first time in Army history, and eventually led to the repeal of the sexist combat ban and the gender desegregation of the entire US military). She is a proud daughter of the 101st, (that's the unit in Band of Brothers), a recipient of the Presidential Volunteer Service Award (from Obama, y'all), and is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Organizational Psychology at the Harvard Extension School (she focuses her research on group behavior, social norms, culture, extremism, leadership demagoguery and cults). You Are 20x More Capable Than You Think – The Ellen Busch Story

Welcome to Compassiviste Dialogues. I'm Ali, your host, and my mission with this podcast is to shed light on critical social and environmental issues worldwide, exploring avenues for positive change. In this deeply moving episode of Compassiviste Dialogues, I sit down with the inspiring Ellen M Busch—an author, advocate, and powerhouse of resilience who has transformed the narrative around dyslexia and personal adversity. From being labeled "incapable" at just six years old to writing a powerful memoir and helping others reclaim their stories, Ellen Busch's journey is anything but ordinary. Diagnosed with dyslexia at a time when the educational system offered little to no support, Ellen was handed a disheartening academic prognosis. But with a fierce mother, a forward-thinking father, and her own relentless determination, she began to prove everyone wrong—one challenge at a time. In this raw and inspiring episode, Ellen opens up about surviving an abusive marriage, navigating grief after her mother’s sudden death, and discovering her purpose through coaching, writing, and resilience.  She shares how outdoor adventures, micro-goals, and a simple mantra—“Prove them wrong”—became cornerstones of her healing and success. If you’ve ever questioned your capabilities, this conversation will shift your mindset and help you reconnect with your power. ABOUT GUEST: Ellen Busch was diagnosed with dyslexia—an academic death sentence in the eyes of many. In a single moment, her self-esteem was shattered, and her potential dismissed. But while the traditional classroom failed her, her parents refused to let her be defined by labels. Instead, they nurtured her education beyond textbooks. ultimately empowering her to earn both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree—defying the limitations imposed on her by dyslexia. Despite her academic and personal achievements, Ellen continued to struggle with low self-esteem and chronic underemployment. She frequently found herself the target of bullies and predators, reinforcing the belief that she was never enough. After surviving an abusive marriage, she was forced to confront not just her trauma but also the limiting beliefs that had held her back for so long. The sudden loss of her parents—her strongest advocates—was another devastating blow, but it became a turning point. With the support of coaches, therapists, and rigorous training alongside Navy SEALs, Ellen reclaimed her power, rewrote her narrative, and stepped into a life of confidence and purpose. Her debut book, Disempowered, chronicles her journey through academic and domestic abuse, resilience, and ultimate transformation. Slated for publication in May 2023, her story serves as a beacon of hope for those who have been told they are not enough.  Today, Ellen resides in Colorado, where she continues to embrace adventure—whether carving down ski slopes, telemark skiing through fresh powder, or exploring the limitless possibilities of the world beyond. KEY NOTES: - Dyslexia can be viewed as a super ability rather than a disability. - Ellen's parents played a crucial role in her empowerment. - Finding purpose can transform trauma into strength. - Empowerment comes from life skills learned outside the classroom. - Proving others wrong can be a powerful motivator. - Resilience is built through overcoming challenges and finding one's own methods of learning. - Breaking free from labels can lead to personal growth and leadership opportunities. I'm Ali, your host, and my mission with this podcast is to shed light on critical social and environmental issues worldwide, exploring avenues for positive change.  Today we are joined by the remarkable Stephen Schettini—mindfulness teacher, author, TEDx speaker, and former Buddhist monk. Born to circus parents, Stephen struggled to find his place in the world, eventually leaving everything behind to hitchhike through India in search of meaning. He immersed himself in monastic life for eight years before stepping away to develop a non-religious, evidence-based approach to mindfulness. In this episode, we’ll explore Stephen’s extraordinary journey, his unique perspective on mindfulness, and how we can cut through life’s chaos with clarity and purpose ABOUT GUEST: Stephen Schettini, known as “The Inner Monk,” is a former Buddhist monk turned mindfulness coach and author. After spending eight years studying Buddhist philosophy, psychology, and debate in Asia and Europe, Schettini transitioned to secular life, becoming a husband, father, and successful  professional in writing, design, and typographic design. In 2003, Schettini founded Quiet Mind Seminars with his wife Caroline, which morphed during the 2020 pandemic into his ongoing service Mindfulness Live. He successfully detaches meditative practices from their religious trappings, using simple scientific language to address today’s fast- paced, secular lifestyles. Schettini’s books include, “The Novice,” a memoir of his monastic years, and “It Begins with Silence,” a secular guide to Buddhist teachings. He hosts regular online mindfulness sessions, offers personal guided meditation services, and conducts workshops and seminars. Through his brand, The Inner Monk, Schettini empowers individuals to reduce stress, improve focus, enhance relationships, and cultivate  emotional intelligence. Never Waste Money on Fast Fashion Again - Shop Sustainably with Yvette Estime

Welcome to Compassiviste Dialogues. I'm Ali, your host, and my mission with this podcast is to shed light on critical social and environmental issues worldwide, exploring avenues for positive change. Today we’re thrilled to share the inspiring story of Yvette Estime, the founder of Dirty Celebrity, a sustainable fashion brand that’s changing the game. After leaving a corporate job, Yvette and her sister launched Dirty Celebrity, and within months, Yvette was named Alternative Designer of the Year by Lux Magazine and invited to join the Accessories Council. In this episode, we’ll dive into Yvette’s journey of building a sustainable brand that uses deadstock and organic materials, all while prioritizing fair wages and local production to minimize emissions. Stay tuned as we discuss Yvette’s vision for a more eco-conscious fashion industry and how Dirty Celebrity is leading the charge. Let’s get started! ABOUT GUEST: Yvette Estime started Dirty Celebrity with her twin sister, Eva,  in 2020 after 6 years in a toxic corporate landscape. The twins were born in NYC and lived in Spanish Harlem (aka El Barro) but now called East Harlem. They were the children of immigrants, a Hispanic father and a Jamaican mother. Their father was self employed and sowed the seeds of entrepreneurship early allowing us to sell candy at school and learn how to monetize our talents. Our mother took us to the 5th Ave shops during the weekend that fostered our love of fashion. We later moved to Miami to escape the hardships of our neighborhood at 12 years old and fell in love with thrifting and  the bold colors of Miami nightlife.  While living in Florida, Yvette completed her Masters in Psychology as her parents steered her away from an artistic career (as immigrant parents do). During the great recession, it became hard to sustain income in Florida and we moved to NJ. In NJ, we thrived but the nagging feeling that we were missing out on our true calling grew especially during the pandemic where we had multiple brushes with Covid. We decided to throw caution to the wind and follow our hearts to launch Dirty Celebrity in 2020 informally and then put our LLC through in December of 2021. We won numerous accolades during the 3 years including: 2020 Klarna Initiative 2021 Luminary Fellowship (co-working space) 2022 PNC x Corulus Venture fund 2023 Selfmade Fellowship  2023 Elaine Gold Foundation Launchpad by the CFDA and Accessories Council KEY NOTES: The global shift to sustainability: What ignited the global awareness?
