Curiously Connected | Season 1 Episode 2
What does safety actually mean for kids? In this episode of Curiously Connected, Bec explores why safety is more than rules, routines, and physical environments… and how a child’s nervous system shapes behaviour, connection, and learning. Drawing on her work with children, families, and educators… along with this week’s reflections from time spent in a youth detention setting - Bec unpacks what might actually be happening beneath behaviour. You’ll hear about:Why behaviour is often a signal of safety (or lack of it)What happens in the brain when children feel unsafeWhy “calm down” and “use your words” are often not accessible in the momentThe difference between top-down and bottom-up (body-based) supportsThe role of co-regulation in helping kids come back online when they flip their lidRelational, emotional, and felt safety and why they matterThe “4 S’s” (Safe, Seen, Soothed & Secure) as a foundation for connectionThis episode invites you to shift your lens… from seeing behaviour as something to fix, to something to better understand. Because when children feel safe… everything changes. This is a comma, not a full stop - an invitation to pause, reflect, and stay curious. If you are curious and want to explore some of these ideas further…No-Drama Discipline – Tina Payne Bryson & Dan SiegelThe Whole-Brain Child – Tina Payne Bryson & Dan SiegelBeyond Behaviors – Mona Delahooke

Curiously Connected | Season 1 Episode 1
Welcome to the very first episode of Curiously Connected. In this opening episode, Bec Penfold shares a glimpse into the experiences that shaped her passion for understanding behaviour, brains, and nervous systems. From playing softball for Australia, to becoming an occupational therapist, to caring for her mum after a brain aneurysm, Bec reflects on how life experiences shape the way we see people, disability, and connection. She also tackles some of the questions she’s asked most often - including whether ADHD and Autism are really “overdiagnosed”, how her own ADHD brain works, and why she chose to stay working in the disability space when OT offers so many career paths. This first episode is a bit of a window into Bec’s brain - curious, passionate, and deeply committed to understanding people better. This podcast is a comma, not a full stop - an invitation to pause, reflect, and stay curious. In this episode, we talk about:• ADHD and neurodivergent brains• Why increased diagnosis doesn’t mean “overdiagnosis”• The school experiences many neurodivergent kids have• The link between learning differences, behaviour and justice systems• Occupational therapy and holistic support• How lived experience shapes the way we support others
