EP51 - Rollerball (1975)
Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 1975 proto-punk paranoid sci-fi thriller sports film ROLLERBALL – directed by Norman Jewison; written by William Harrison; starring James Caan, John Houseman, Maud Adams, John Beck, and Ralph Richardson.A corporate dictator tries to oust the star player of a brutal 21st century spectator sport.Rollerball is a dystopian sports movie wrapped up in a cautionary cyberpunk tale of a corporate governed world that strips away an individual person’s free will and replaces it with product, gladiatorial TV combat, and random female assignments to men. The film explores what it means to be human in a world that is dominated and controlled to eliminate hunger, pain, and disease. One man decides to become greater than the game and to show the citizens of the world that you can indeed fight to control your own destiny. EP50 - Chopping Mall (1986)
In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 1986 B-movie teen horror cyberpunk film CHOPPING MALL – directed by Jim Wynorski; written by Jim Wynorski & Steve Mitchell; starring Kelli Maroney, Tony O’Dell, Russell Todd, Barbara Crampton, John Terlesky, and Dick Miller.A group of young shopping mall employees stay behind for a late night party in one of the stores. When the mall goes on lock-down before they can get out, the robot security system malfunctions, and goes on a killing spree.Chopping Mall is a classic 1980s science-fiction teenage horror set in a futuristic shopping mall that is policed by malfunctioning laser-shooting killbots! It’s a hilarious ride of camp humor, gnarly kills, and robot blood (even though we never see it)! It basically combines the dumbassery of teenagers doing dumbass things while being hunted by robots whose only intention is to kill. What more can you ask for in an 1980s sci-fi movie? EP49 - Brainscan (1994)
In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 1994 cyber-horror film BRAINSCAN – directed by John Flynn; written by Brian Owens & Andrew Kevin Walker; starring Edward Furlong, Frank Langella, and T. Ryder Smith.A teenager is a part of an interactive video game where he kills innocent victims. Later, the murders become real.Brainscan was a cyber-thriller movie that captured the zeitgeist of the 1990s, right before the critical Cyberpunk Mainstream year of 1995. Just think about it for a second – it had Edward Furlong as the high-school protagonist, it had horror vibes, it was cyberpunk, it had CD-ROMs, it was about interactive video games (which were all the rage back then), and it had a Freddy Krueger-esque villain in The Trickster. On paper, home-run! In reality, not so much, but it definitely has its audience and it became a minor cult hit. Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk.\In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 1982 West German cult cyberpunk film KAMIKAZE 89 – directed by Wolf German; written by Wolf German and Robert Katz; based on the novel by Per Wahloo called Murder on the 31st Floor; soundtrack by Tangerine Dream founder Edgar Froese; starring Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Gunther Kaufmann, and Franco Nero.In a totalitarian society of the future, in which the government controls all facets of the press, a homicide detective investigates a string of bombings, and finds out more than he bargained for. The poster logline for Kamikaze 89 is – “Ninety-Six Hours to Crack His Last Case…His Time’s Already Up.” Lieutenant Jansen (played by the sweaty and portly Fassbinder) must unravel the mystery of murder, bomb threats, counter-revolutionaries, and the multi-national media conglomerate that governs their daily lives. It’s set over 4 crackling days as we accompany Jansen on his quest to keep his perfect case record intact! EP47 - Liquid Sky (1982)
In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 1982 midnight-movie cult-classic gender-fluid cyberpunk-adjacent LIQUID SKY – directed by Slava Tsukerman; written by Slava Tsukerman, Nina V. Kerova, & Anne Carlisle; starring Anne Carlisle, Paula E. Sheppard, Susan Doukas, and Otto van Wernherr. A small, heroin-seeking UFO lands on a Manhattan roof, observes a bizarre, drug addicted fashion model, and sucks endorphin from her sexual encounters’ brains.Liquid Sky is a neon fever dream set against the backdrop of an Empire State Building monolith that resembles a plunging heroin syringe. It’s a bisexual, transgender, gender-fluid cyber-fashion show that also features an alien takeover of a protagonist that grants her the curse of killing people during sex. It’s death by orgasm, circa 1982 NYC new wave art scene, where cocaine is plentiful, night clubs are jumping, and a heroin called Liquid Sky is all the rage. Welcome to the near future, where style and fashion pave the way for stardom on rags like Midnite Magazine, a precursor to the Screamsheet adverts that dominate Cyberpunk 2020. This film was listed as one of the inspirations for the game by Mike Pondsmith, and it’s a necessary addition to the Cyberpunk Cinema canon! EP46 - Burst City (1982)
In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 1982 landmark esoteric cyberpunk rock musical BURST CITY – directed by Shogo Ishii; written by Jugatsu Toi. Punk rock gangs and music groups clash with one another and the brutal police force in a futuristic Tokyo setting. Burst City is a visceral, wild, kinetic, and aggressive film that attempts (and succeeds) to encapsulate the essence of the subculture of punk rock. The film is a frantic landscape of a post-apocalyptic dystopia mixed with nuclear power plant concerns in Neo Tokyo mixed with Japan’s vibrant punk rock scene. It is pure orchestrated madness that reflects the frustration of the artists of the subculture of that particular era combined with the industrialization of society set against the backdrop of a bleak, lawless future. The film is literally BURSTING with a kinetic/manic energy that has never been duplicated in cinema. You will not see anything like this. You just have to witness it in all its glory. In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 1998 visionary cyberpunk film DARK CITY – directed by Alex Proyas; written by Alex Proyas, Lem Dobbs, and David Goyer; starring Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, & William Hurt.A man struggles with memories of his past, which include a wife he cannot remember and a nightmarish world no one else ever seems to wake up from.Dark City was a film that cemented Alex Proyas, a music video director, as a talent to watch in the late-90s and beyond. His debut film, The Crow, became an instant cult classic and his follow-up film Dark City was deeply impressive. In ways, Dark City was like a spiritual sister film to The Matrix – both films shared similar themes, both used some of the same sets, and both expounded upon the late-millennia craze of simulacra and simulation which were based upon the haunting principles that the world around you might not be real. In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 1999 cyberpunk landmark film The Matrix – written & directed by The Wachowskis; starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fisburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Joe Pantoliano. When a beautiful stranger leads computer hacker Neo to a forbidding underworld, he discovers the shocking truth – the life he knows is the elaborate deception of an evil cyber-intelligence.The Matrix was the film that pushed cyberpunk cinema into the mainstream consciousness. It unleashed a wave of similar themed cyber films, three underwhelming sequels in the Series, as well as making the special effect of “bullet time” a household name. The film garnered critical acclaim, it won 4 Oscars, and made a boat-load of money and made the Wachowskis the most sought-after director duo in town. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 1985 cyberpunk classic TV-Movie Max Headroom – directed by Annabel Jankel & Rocky Morton; written by Steve Roberts; starring Matt Frewer, Amanda Pays, Nickolas Grace, William Morgan Sheppard, Paul Spurrier, and Hilton McRae.In the dystopic near future, a crusading TV reporter investigates news stories with the help of a wisecracking computer version of himself.Max Headroom was a cyberpunk film set “20 minutes into the future” that explored the evils of post-capitalist corporatism, the dystopian bleak future society obsessed with media, the pessimism of mankind in a digital age, and the rise of avatars as a new way of life. It’s Blade Runner meets Network! Max Headroom was a prescient look at a near future that looks eerily like the world we live in now. Plus, Max Headroom himself became a pop-culture personality that lasted longer than it’s short-lived TV series. It launched a franchise that had six installments and created the character of Jack Deth led by Tim Thomerson’s awesome performance. In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 1986 cyberpunk sci-fi action masterpiece, Aliens – written & directed by James Cameron; story by James Cameron, Walter Hill, & David Giler; starring Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, Jenette Goldstein, and Carrie Henn.Decades after surviving the Nostromo incident, Ellen Ripley is sent out to re-establish contact with a terraforming colony but finds herself battling the Alien Queen and her offspring.Aliens transformed my childhood and became a sci-fi action landmark that, in my opinion, has never been topped. This film is galvanizing, terrifying, heart-pounding, pulse-pounding, funny, legendarily quotable, and a certifiable stone-cold classic. It’s the ultimate litmus test – if you don’t like Aliens, than we can’t be friends. Period. I have probably seen this film near 100 times and it only gets better with each viewing. In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 1979 protopunk science-fiction horror masterpiece, Alien – directed by Ridley Scott; written by Dan O’Bannon; story by Dan O’Bannon & Ronald Shusett; starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kotto. After investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin, the crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform.Alien is the ultimate sci-fi horror mashup that revolutionized the two genres and created a pop-culture sensation. It has all the thematic elements of cyberpunk – MUTHER, the AI-computer that controls the ship and only parcels out information on the need-to-know basis to the expendable crew; ASH, the evil android that is jeopardizing the safety of the crew because he’s following orders from the Company – WEYLAND-YUTANI, the evil multi-national corporation that wants the xenomorph for their bio-weapons division – to the design of the bio-mechanical planetoid that pulses with xenomorphic dread. EP32 - 12 Monkeys (1995)
In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 1995 cyberpunk psychological end-of-world thriller, 12 Monkeys – directed by Terry Gilliam; written by David Webb Peoples & Janet Peoples; inspired by the film “La Jetee” by Chris Marker; starring Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, Brad Pitt, Jon Seda, David Morse, and Christopher Plummer. In a future world devastated by disease, a convict is sent back in time to gather information about the man-made virus that wiped out most of the human population on the planet.12 Monkeys was a film I saw for the first time as a VHS rental in 1996. I did not see it in the movie theater. At that point, I had not seen the French New Wave film that inspired it, La Jetee (that wouldn’t happen until 1999). For the 17-year old me who was wired into science-fiction, cyberpunk, and all things end of the world, this hit every freaking box. EP31 - Pi (1998)
In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 1998 cyberpunk thriller, Pi – written/directed by Darren Aronofsky; starring Sean Gullette, Mark Margolis, and Ben Shenkman. A paranoid mathematician searches for a key number that will unlock the universal patterns found in nature.I watched Pi on VHS back when I was in college in the late-90s and it changed my entire outlook. It is the film that made me want to become a filmmaker and Darren Aronofsky was my new favorite director. When I first went to Boston University, I wanted to go into sports broadcasting, I thought I was going to be on ESPN or WFAN and being a sports journalist. Well, I saw this movie, and the rest is history. It was unlike any other movie I had ever seen. It was indie-rock cyberpunk. It was black and white. It was dangerous. It was experimental. It was guerilla DIY. It was fucking awesome. So, do me a favor – it’s time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the great lega-sequel 2010 cyberpunk movie, Tron Legacy – directed by Joseph Kosinski, written by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, starring Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Bruce Boxleitner, and Michael Sheen. The son of a virtual world designer goes looking for his father and ends up inside the digital world that his father designed. He meets his father’s corrupted creation and a unique ally who was born inside the digital world.Tron Legacy is one of the best cyberpunk films of this century. It holds a special place in my heart because I showed this film to my 4-year-old son back in 2011 and it became one of the first films that he obsessed over. We watched it dozens of times together and I was shocked by how much more I loved it watching HIM experience it through his eyes. It made the film that much more poignant, especially with the father/son angle in the film. Let’s just say, this viewing definitely got me teary-eyed. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the ground-breaking 1982 cyberpunk movie, Tron – written and directed by Steven Lisberger, starring Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, David Warner, Cindy Morgan, and Barnard Hughes.A computer hacker is abducted into the digital world and forced to participate in gladiatorial games where his only chance of escape is with the help of a heroic security program. This is one of the first cyberpunk films I remember watching as a little kid. I remember being dazzled by the otherworldly raw special effects of cyberspace, thinking about how cool it would be to be zapped into my favorite video game (I always wanted to be in Space Quest and travel the universe with Roger Wilco and the Pirates of Pestulon). I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 2017 legasequel cyberpunk modern masterpiece, Blade Runner 2049 – co-written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, based on the characters from “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” by Philip K. Everything rips in this film, from the compositions by Roger Deakins, to the score by Hans Zimmer, to the pacing orchestrated by Denis, to the sense of isolation and desolation that permeates throughout the film, and the question that haunts all replicants and humans alike – what does it mean to be human? I was that kid who read all the books in elementary and high school, and I’m proud as hell that I did, because it opened up my imagination more than anything that has come out since the Disney purchase. In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 1976 protopunk thriller, Logan’s Run – directed by Michael Anderson, starring Michael York, Jenny Agutter, Richard Jordan, Farah Fawcett, Peter Ustinov, and Roscoe Lee Browne.A police officer in the future uncovers the deadly secret behind a society that worships youth.Logan’s Run was a landmark science-fiction film of the mid-1970s that posed the question – would you live in a utopian society where you didn’t have to work or struggle but the payoff is that you’d have to sacrifice your life by the time you reach 30? That’s the dilemma that haunts Logan and Jessica, as they decide to press their luck and see what remains outside the dome. It is a fascinating exploration on how we create the walls that imprison us from reality, the laws that govern us with fear, and the lies we tell each other that blind us from the truth. It is a protopunk masterpiece that was the primer for the rest of Lucas’ career as a filmmaker. It delves into all of the hallmarks of cyberpunk before it’s official designation – dystopian society, mind control, drug abuse, cyborgs, cassette futurism. It has a little bit of everything and it paved the way for future of science fiction. Is he being played? This film might be the most insane B-movie cyberpunk action film ever made. There are more bullets fired in this film than in any film I’ve seen. JCVD fighting guys in a post-apocalyptic future with cyberpunk vibes and his modified paint-ball gun was the greatest thing these eyes had ever seen in 1989. In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 1988 cyberpunk classic anime film, Akira – written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, based on the legendary manga by Otomo. A secret military project endangers Neo-Tokyo when it turns a biker gang member into a rampaging psychic psychopath who can only be stopped by a teenager, his gang of biker friends and a group of psychics. This is the movie that started it all and introduced anime to mainstream Western audiences...and joining me today is my first guest on the podcast, none other than Mike Pecci. It’s one of Arnold’s better films that no one really talks about. The dystopian cyberpunk vibes are high on this bad boy, as Ben Richards, the Butcher of Bakersfield, must survive a rigged TV game show that has captured the hearts and minds of the future America of 2017. Welcome back to CYBERPUNK CINEMA - the definitive dive into the dark future of science fiction. In this week's episode, I will be breaking down the cult classic cyberpunk film HACKERS (1995) - directed by Ian Softley, written by Rafael Moreu, and starring Jonny Lee Miller, Angelina Jolie, Jesse Bradford, Matthew Lillard, and Fisher Stevens.Teenage hackers discover a criminal conspiracy with plans to use a computer virus that will capsize five oil tankers. This is one of my favorite cyberpunk films of the 1990s. It’s an acid trip into cyberspace, filled with insane visuals, a killer soundtrack, and unbelievable gender-blind costume design that is currently in fashion now. The film has only gotten better with age as I watched it twice last week and was transported back into time to the mid-90s when roller-blading, skateboarding, phone phreaking, and the Anarchist’s Cookbook were the necessary evils of our own teenage wasteland. This film absolutely nails the PUNK in Cyberpunk as it explores the subculture of hacking. It’s amazing and it belongs amongst the best in the Cyberpunk Cinema catalog. So, do me a favor – it’s time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. You know what time it is! EP10 - Dredd (2012)
Welcome back to CYBERPUNK CINEMA - the definitive dive into the dark future of science fiction. In this week's episode, I will be breaking down the cult classic cyberpunk film DREDD (2012) - directed by Pete Travis, written by Alex Garland, based on the "Judge Dredd" comic by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra, and starring Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, and Lena Headey. In a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury, and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO. This is one of my favorite cyberpunk films of the 21st century as it delves into so many thematic signatures of the sub-genre that it made me smile from ear to fucking ear. It is a criminally overlooked film that has become a cult classic over recent years and deserves to be known by the masses. Join me as I venture deep into Mega City One – where 800 million people live in the ruin of the old world. It’s judgment time, baby! So, do me a favor – it’s time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. You know what time it is! EP09 - Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
Welcome back to CYBERPUNK CINEMA - the definitive dive into the dark future of science fiction. In this week's episode, I will be breaking down the cyberpunk sequel masterpiece TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY (1991) - directed by James Cameron, written by James Cameron and William Wisher, and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Edward Furlong, and Robert Patrick.A cyborg, identical to the one who failed to kill Sarah Connor, must now protect her ten-year old son John from an even more advanced and powerful cyborg. This was the sequel event of my childhood. This was the first time I ever felt the waves of anticipation take over me. I was a Terminator fanatic. I watched the initial film dozens of times at that point on VHS, I read the NOW comics line, and I was all-in on Terminator lore in the pre-internet days. This was the cinematic experience that changed my life. So, do me a favor – it’s time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. EP08 - The Terminator (1984)
Welcome back to CYBERPUNK CINEMA - the definitive dive into the dark future of science fiction. In this week's episode, I will be breaking down the 1984 cyberpunk thriller THE TERMINATOR (1984) - directed by James Cameron, and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, and Michael Biehn. A human soldier is sent from 2029 to 1984 to stop an almost indestructible cyborg killing machine, sent from the same year, which has been programmed to execute a young woman whose unborn son is the key to humanity's future salvation. This is was probably the first CYBERPUNK film I ever saw - my older brother taped everything off HBO onto VHS, so we had an entire library of movies at our home - and THE TERMINATOR was always on - and I was obsessed. I practically memorized every line in this movie, every scene, and I was hungry for more...and I was only 7! A perfect age to watch a violent movie about humanity's extinction, to watch a cyborg hunt down and kill people, and of course, that infamous sex scene. Ahhhh...the 1980s, parental guidance was suggested, but it was never enforced! So, do me a favor – it’s time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. In this week's episode, I will be breaking down the 1990 cyberpunk film TOTAL RECALL (1990) - directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. When a man goes in to have virtual vacation memories of the planet Mars implanted in his mind, an unexpected and harrowing series of events forces him to go the planet for real – or is he? TOTAL RECALL explores identity - who are we really? This movie absolutely rules! It is a colossal paranoid mindfuck thriller stuck inside an interplanetary chase movie. EP06 - RoboCop (1987)
Welcome back to CYBERPUNK CINEMA - the definitive dive into the dark future of science fiction. In this week's episode, I will breakdown the 1987 cyberpunk masterpiece ROBOCOP (1987) - directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Peter Weller. In a dystopic and crime-ridden Detroit, a terminally wounded cop returns to the force as a powerful cyborg haunted by submerged memories. This is not only one of my favorite cyberpunk films of all-time, it is one of my favorite overall films period. To me, this is a FIVE STAR FILM, hands down, it’s perfect, it’s iconic, it’s legendary. ROBOCOP is a perfect cyberpunk film. It encompasses all of the thematic signatures of the genre – the high tech of OCP, RoboCop’s cyborg full body prosthetic armor, the ED-209 enforcement droid, and the plans for the Delta City makeover compounded with the low life of Old Detroit’s crime-ridden streets, the Police Force getting decimated and threatening a strike, the rampant criminal element that is destroying a once proud city. I’ll buy that for a dollar! EP05 - Videodrome (1983)
Welcome back to CYBERPUNK CINEMA - the definitive dive into the dark future of science fiction. In this week's episode, I will breakdown the cult classic hallucinatory 1983 cyberpunk film, VIDEODROME (1983)– written and directed by David Cronenberg, and starring James Woods, the master of playing sleazy sketchballs. The story follows a programmer at a Toronto TV station that specializes in adult entertainment as he searches for producers of a dangerous and bizarre broadcast - VIDEODROME! This film combines Cronenberg’s trademark body-horror with hyperviolent retro cyberpunk vibes that it bleeds off your TV. It's super fucking cool!Long live the new flesh! EP04 - Escape from New York (1981)
Welcome back to CYBERPUNK CINEMA - the definitive dive into the dark future of science fiction. In this week's episode, I will breakdown the cult classic ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (1981), a "proto-punk" and "cyberpunk-adjacent" film that paves the way for the entire genre of cyberpunk - from the anti-hero in Snake Plissken, to the undesirable "low-lifes" living in a world crumbling into ruins, to the rising power of a totalitarian police state, to a plausible dark future that is self-reflective of our own present. This is the primer. William Gibson was inspired to write Neuromancer, partially from watching this movie, and hearing a throwaway line that Lee Van Cleef gave to Kurt Russell, about "flying the gullfire over Leningrad." How cool is that?Just like all great cyberpunk films, Escape from New York has a ton of attitude, it hits on all the vibes, and the tone represents everything that cyberpunk was and will be in the near future. John Carpenter is the Genre King, and this is one of his finest efforts. Enjoy!
