A Good Day in Court for the Defence
After nearly eleven days on the stand, Diezani Alison-Madueke's cross-examination is over — and the trial has now moved into the witness phase. Tuesday was, on balance, a strong day for the defence: four written statements were read into Southwark Crown Court, including from former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan. In this episode, Peter Okwoche walks through what the court actually heard: · Oil executive Kevin Okyere's account of paying a £3,900 shortfall on Ms. Alison-Madueke's behalf at Peter Jones in London and being repaid in cash in Abuja. · Businessman Igho Sanomi's explanation that Nigeria's foreign-currency controls shaped how he handled purchases for her in London, and his statement that his companies won contracts through fair, competitive bidding. · Former president Goodluck Jonathan's written statement: third-party payments on behalf of ministers on official duty were "not unusual," and he had personally approved Ms. Alison-Madueke's use of private jets for certain international trips. · The end of Ms. Alison-Madueke's own time on the stand — her account of ten years confined to London under NCA conditions, and of being denied access to documents she says she needs for her defence. · Wednesday: a juror's complaint about a prejudicial comment by another juror, the judge's decision to re-instruct the jury and circulate a short questionnaire, technical delays with witnesses joining online from Abuja, and the first character witness former ambassador Dr. Godknows Boladei Igali. This is an active UK criminal trial, so we report only what was heard in open court , no speculation. Diezani Alison-Madueke faces five counts of accepting bribes and one count of conspiracy to commit bribery. She denies all charges. D.A.M.
