Daily Dangers
by Minki Beak
In this podcast, I will address the dangers that lurk in our daily lives. Whether it's exercise, coffee, or even food, I will be exploring some consequences of becoming addicted to such "dangers." Some people may lower their guard around such dangers, as they doubt that they will become addicted to something they use everyday. This is precisely the reason why it is important to do things in moderation and be aware of becoming too invested on anything, whether it is physical or intellectual.

Episode 7: Want more, need less: Oniomania or Shopping addiction
Note: Sorry my voice sounds a bit different here as I caught kind of a cold. In Episode 7 of Daily Dangers, I explored oniomania, a kind of disorder that affects around 2-8% of the general adult US population. Oniomania or shopping addiction is commonly associated with other types of psychological disorders such as Obsessive compulsive disorder. People with Oniomania have a tendency to shop needlessly, causing a great financial crisis within their families or personal lives. It is also commonly observed with other psychiatric disorders such as substance abuse and other addictions. What people are not aware of enough is that Oniomania can have serious psychological effects on a person. Thus, it is important to be aware of one's actions and find support for people who may shop needlessly.

Episode 6: Addiction to Adrenaline: The Natural High
Many people must have experienced an adrenaline rush at least once in their lifetimes. Listening to one's favorite music or doing something extremely exciting can make someone feel this rush of energy. It's natural to enjoy this kind of burst in energy, but it may develop into a problem when one begins to find greater desire in feeling this rush in energy instead of deriving one's enjoyment from other daily activities such as spending time with family and friends. In this episode, I discuss some medical difficulties as well as the reasoning behind why some people may develop an addiction to adrenaline.

Episode 5: The obsession of social validation
It is common for people to feel the need to be well-thought of by other people. They want to look pretty/handsome, smart, and sophisticated. However, as modern society progresses, all of these criteria become harder and harder to hit. Thus, this "obsession" may result in psychological problems. In this episode, I talk about the problem with this obsession and mention renowned professors' research on the topic.

Episode 4: The Urge for Fuel: Food Addiction
Food is something we all know is necessary for survival. Thus, we may not associate food as a common addiction. However, food can be just as addicting as anything out there from gambling to video games. Food addiction can also directly lead to many medical risks and that is why it is crucial in being aware of a healthy diet and always consuming sugary treats and drinks in moderation.

Episode 3: The dangers of the Virtual World
Video games are a common hobby in many adolescents and young adults. It is fun, social, and challenging. However, when video games become a main pillar of one's life, it may become a problem. There are many neurological processes involved while one plays video games, just like any other activity. Furthermore, just like any other activity, when it is done in moderation, video games are not harmful, but rather beneficial as it provides an opportunity for friends to cooperate virtually and socialize. However, when one begins to crave for more screen time, video games may develop into a problem that makes one lose sight of the things that they value the most in their lives.

Episode 2. Can you exercise too much?
Exercising is helpful and is actually necessary for a healthy body. However, recent trends in social media have made people feel less confident and thus attempt to lose weight in the worst ways. One of these ways is exercising too much, which can actually cause even more medical problems. For example, weakening of the muscles and bones are common side effects of over exercising. Though people may not associate being "addicted" to exercise as negative, it may still become a problem when not done in moderation.

Episode 1: Should Teenagers drink coffee?
Whether a student at school or a worker at work, coffee has become an integral part of many people in modern day society. This makes sense, as the effect of the drug in coffee, caffeine, has the ability for someone to feel more "happy" and excited to begin their day. However, overconsumption of this drug can result in catastrophic effects in the future. In this episode, I will be stating some medical consequences of such overconsumption of the caffeine drug. In this, I hope to explain that coffee, while safe when done in moderation, can be dangerous when someone becomes addicted, and it is just as easy to become addicted to caffeine as it is for any other drug out there.
