Defense of Poesy

In Defense of Poesy, Sir Philip Sidney presents a vision of an ideally ordered world where goodness is rewarded and evil punished, yet acknowledges that this harmony has been disrupted by sin and random chance. He argues that the purpose of poetry is to restore this order by enlightening and delighting audiences. This treatise champions the value of poetry—understood as literature in its entirety—while offering pointed critiques of the literature of his time. Although some of Sidneys criticism may seem overly harsh by contemporary standards, it served a vital purpose defending the author against accusations of bias stemming from his lofty ideals.
