Description of New England

Captain John Smith (c. January 1580 – June 21, 1631), known as the Admiral of New England, was an English soldier, explorer, and author whose adventures helped shape the early American landscape. Knighted for his service to the Prince of Transylvania, Smith is best known for establishing the first permanent English settlement in North America at Jamestown, Virginia, and for his association with Pocahontas during a turbulent encounter with the Powhatan Confederacy. As a leader of the Virginia Colony from 1608 to 1609, he embarked on extensive explorations of Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay. His writings and maps inspired countless others to join in the quest for new opportunities in the New World. In 1614, he named the region New England during his voyages along the coasts of Maine and Massachusetts Bay. Despite facing storms and pirate captures, he returned to England, where he published A Description of New England before passing away in 1631. (Introduction by Wikipedia)
