Diary of a 90s Teen

The 90s, what a great time to be a teenager. No ring cams, or cellphones for your parents to clock your comings, goings and locations. No summoning a car service through an app. If you wanted to go somewhere, your ass walked. Yup, the 90s, the good old days. Wanna reminisce? Then come hang out with me every week as I read real entries from the diaries that I kept as a teen growing up in the 90s. Afterwards, I'll unpack each entry, sharing the stories behind all the drama and the lessons I learned.

  1. 20

    Entry 19 - On & On

As 8th grade draws to an end… lockers are getting cleaned out. There’s a graduation ceremony to attend. You’re saying farewell to middle school and good bye to all the faces you hope to see next year. And that boy only has about a week left to convince you to come back to his house before summer break begins.

  2. 19

Entry 18 - Crush On You

What were some of the things you did as a teen to get the attention of someone you had a crush on? Jokin' on them in the hallways between classes? Trying to be anywhere you knew they were going to be? Playful hits and smiles? If you were like me, it was all of the above.

  3. 18

Entry 17 - Passin' Me By

Is you, or is you ain’t my baby? A simple question to answer if your relationship is clearly defined. But, hey, what do a bunch of Middle Schoolers know about relationships? He may go around telling other boys to stop bothering you because you belong to him, but to you he’s just a friend.

  4. 17

Entry 16 - Whenever Wherever Whatever

Do you or don’t you take advantage of the opportunities presented to you? Chances to do things come few and far between, especially when you’re a teen. So when given that “lucky” break what would you do?

  5. 16

    Entry 15 - Brokenhearted

At what age do you learn to handle a break up, the "right" way? Well it's definitely not in Middle School. Broken hearts and broken friendships, it's apparently very hard to keep things together when you're a young teen.

  6. 15

    Entry 14 - Me, Myself, and I

After Christmas break, middle school hallways turn into runways, as students show off the gifts they got. My talent is my creativity, and it shines brighter than anything they got under their trees. And his surprise to me? Learning my name. It only took him till 8th grade to find it out.

  7. 14

    Entry 13 - 4 Page Letter

Letter writing is an art. Boys always wanted letters, but rarely wrote back. And just what were they doing with all of those perfectly crafted, well thought out letters I wrote to them?

  8. 13

Entry 12 - My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)

"And now it's time for the break down." Try and try as some boys might, they just don't have what it takes to get in the draws. He was looking to bone, and I was looking for a way to get out of it. Going over to his house probably wasn't the right way to convey that message.

  9. 12

Entry 11 - The Choice Is Yours

How many times were you invited over a boys house as a teen, with them expecting for something to happen? Yet it never did. Definitely not by his choice, but hey your have the right to change your mind.

  10. 11

Entry 10 - Return of the Mack

Before the term “Spin The Block” was a thing, middle school boys of the 90s were participating in the practice. If given the opportunity would you give an ex the chance to come back? How hard would you question the reasons for their return?

  11. 10

    Entry 9 - I Wanna Be Down

Best friends are hard to come by, so if you find one that is your best, hold on to them. And if there is a new one that you want to be down with, chase him until he notices you. Find out if you’re the kinda girl he could be down for, then make your move.

  12. 9

Entry 8 - Knockin' da Boots

Losing your virginity is suppose to be special… but sometimes it’s just about knocking’ boots and getting it over with. The boy craziness of 7th grade wraps up, and I go into the summer before 8th grade de-virginized and with my eyes set on some new prospects.

  13. 8

Entry 7 - The Kissing Game

Do you remember your first kiss? Was it magical? Was it with someone special? Was it a "real" kiss or just a peck? Were you in love or like? You have to get through that first to continue having a turn at playing a lifetime of the kissing game.

  14. 7

    Entry 6 - Shook Ones

Did you ever get in enough trouble to get suspended? Have you ever had a fight in school? Ever fought someone you considered a friend? Yes. Yes. And yes. Sometimes you just gotta let a chick know, speak the wrong words, and you will get touched.

  15. 6

Entry 5 - None of UR Friends Business

It's no fun when the rumors are about you. A friend quickly becomes an enemy when she's not minding the business that pays her, and instead decides to be all up in mine. Staying busy spreading information about me to the boy I was talking to. Could it have been that she was jealous and shit?

  16. 5

    Entry 4 - Sitting Home

You asked for my phone number, so why am I sitting home waiting on you, ‘cause staring at these walls in all I do, instead of getting a call from you? Was he trying to play hard to get, or trying not appear to like he sweatin’ me.

  17. 4

Entry 3 - Come And Talk to Me

If only Jodeci could've come to my Middle School and sang the line "Trying to get my nerve built up to be so strong," I might have understood why that boy wouldn't step to me. It was obvious that he liked me, but he couldn't seem to get his thoughts together to come and talk to me.

  18. 3

Entry 2 - The World Is Yours

Nas said it best “Yo, the World is Yours. It’s Mine, It’s Mine” and when you’re a teen you think the world belongs and revolves around you. No matter if your whole world is only the hallways of middle school. Rumors of tongue kissing, who’s boneing who, crushes and horny boys are the center of your universe.

  19. 2

    Entry 1: A Party Ain't A Party

Like the chorus of the song by Queen Pen, which this week's entry is named after, goes "A party ain't a party, unless it's ran all thru." Well let's just say, the party my sister and I threw that time my parents went away and left us alone, wasn't the only thing that got ran thru.
