From Street to Home - The Bite Risk No One Is Tracking

For National Dog Bite Prevention Week, our director Michelle Robertson, who studies street-born dog behaviour on the streets and within shelter environments speaks about bite risk. In this episode, she addresses what happens to dogs after relocation into homes. Some street-born dogs, newly arrived from overseas, have gone on to bite, in some cases leading to euthanasia. These incidents are not freely discussed & examined in a structured way.Michelle explores why these bites may occur, what we currently understand, and what remains unknown. She also introduces a fact-finding initiative designed to collect structured, anonymous input from adopters. The aim is to build a clearer picture of how dogs adjust within home environments after relocation. This is not about judgement or individual cases. It is about understanding patterns and closing a critical gap in knowledge. If you have adopted a street-born dog from overseas, you can contribute to this work via the link provided heredogdeskanimalaction.co.uk/p/street-dog-to-home-why-this-workThis Substack is reader-supported. What Is Really Happening to Animals Right Now Across Systems Under Pressure

This week’s animal welfare bulletin brings together reports from multiple countries, revealing a consistent pattern across systems. In Turkey, large-scale dog removals continue without transparent data, while an illegal horse slaughter operation uncovered in Çatalca raises serious questions about oversight and enforcement. In the United Kingdom, dog control policies and enforcement powers remain under scrutiny, alongside ongoing welfare cases and arrests linked to dangerous dogs.Globally, responses continue to be driven by crisis. From culling pressure following disease concerns in Pakistan, to reactive shelter expansion in India, disease-related intake suspensions in the United States, and large-scale welfare seizures in Romania.Across each case, the same themes emerge.Enforcement without prevention. Capacity without transparency. And systems responding only after harm has already occurred. This Substack is reader-supported. Exposing Canned Hunting and the Lion Bone Pipeline

Join filmmakers Richard Pierce and Anton Leech as they expose the disturbing lifecycle of captive-bred lions born on farms, raised for tourist interactions, shot in canned hunts, and ultimately exported as bones for international markets. This conversation examines:* How lion farming operates as a commercial supply chain rather than conservation.* The role of canned hunting in providing a lucrative end-point for farmed lions.* The export and sale of lion bones to meet global demand, particularly for traditional medicine and luxury products.* The welfare crisis faced by captive lions from birth to slaughter.* The misleading narratives used to justify farming and canned hunts as conservation tools.* The environmental and ethical consequences of commodifying lions as products rather than protecting them as wildlife.Richard and Anton share insights from their investigation, revealing an industry that breeds lions not for preservation, but profit fuelled by tourism, trophy hunters, and the international bone market. This conversation is essential for anyone concerned with wildlife exploitation, policy reform, ethical tourism, and the urgent need to dismantle lion farming and the trade it feeds. This Substack is reader-supported. Seals Need Space!

Every now and then, a seal makes an appearance in areas populated by humans, sparking a great deal of interest. Many of us remember Freddie the seal, who became a local celebrity in Teddington as people flocked to witness his playful antics. Sadly, Freddie's life was cut short when a dog, having slipped its harness negatively interacted with Freddie, leading to a tragic accident. This incident serves as a poignant reminder of how easily we can disrupt the delicate balance of nature.I had the opportunity to speak with Dan Jarvis from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue about how we can enjoy interacting with these magnificent creatures without causing them harm. Dan emphasized the importance of observing seals from a respectful distance to minimize stress and disturbance. He also highlighted the need for keeping dogs on leashes near seal habitats to prevent any unfortunate encounters.By adopting these simple measures, we can ensure that our curiosity and admiration for seals do not inadvertently lead to harm, allowing them to thrive in their natural environments and continue to bring joy to those who have the chance to see them. This Substack is reader-supported. Does Banned Breed Legislation Work?

In the early 1990s, a series of very unpleasant attacks on humans by dogs, some resulting in fatalities, attracted the attention of the media. The government responded with what might be considered a knee-jerk reaction and breed-specific legislation, or BSL as it is commonly known, came into effect as part of the Dangerous Dogs Act.Within this piece of legislation, four breeds of dogs are banned, including the Pitbull Terrier. You might think that the action of banning these dogs considered dangerous breeds would result in reduced biting incidents and zero fatalities, but you would be wrong. Community Dogs In Turkey

Stray dogs have long been an integral part of Turkish life, though the relationship hasn't always been peaceful. Despite this, the country is home to numerous animal lovers who cherish these animals. Many people adopt as many dogs as they can manage, yet with millions of stray dogs around and only a small percentage of the population—about 5%—willing to take them into their homes, it becomes an insurmountable challenge to provide homes for all of them. Some strays are lucky & become community dogs. These dogs are unique; they live within the community but are not owned in the traditional sense. Instead, they are well looked after and deeply cared for by the community members, showcasing a different but effective way of animal care and affection. In the current climate, there's a troubling surge of animosity directed toward dogs. The dog depicted in the graphic accompanying this audio clip was a victim of such unwarranted hatred. At 12 years old, she was a beloved community dog, cared for by many residents in her neighbourhood. These caring individuals came together to ensure she was fed, healthy, and safe. Tragically, one day, she was mercilessly shot in broad daylight by a former police officer, simply because she had been barking. This senseless act was not the fault of those who looked after her. They did everything they could to protect her and cherished her deeply.Placing any sort of blame on them in this situation needs to be avoided. It's essential to approach the matter with empathy and understanding, recognizing that everyone involved is doing their best under the circumstances. Showing compassion and support can make a significant difference, fostering a more positive and constructive environment for everyone. This is a public episode. Romanian Stray Dogs

Dale and I had the pleasure of catching up with Dr. Aurelian Stefan, a dedicated veterinarian who tirelessly works with vulnerable dogs in Romania, a country where the plight of stray dogs is a pressing issue. Our conversation delved into the complexities surrounding this topic, as I often receive messages and emails, and engage in discussions with people who hold the belief that stray dogs should remain on the streets.During our discussion, we touched upon the ongoing debate about the importation of dogs adopted from Romania into the UK. There are individuals in positions of power who are advocating for a change in the current practices and, in some cases, are even proposing a complete ban on the importation of these dogs. Our conversation was rich and enlightening, covering these points and much more. Neil Waters The Thylacine Awareness Group Of Australia

Neil Waters is a passionate man who has been searching for evidence of the alleged extinct thylacine for years. He truly believes that this incredible animal, native to Australia, is alive and well, hiding from man in the bush. We loved speaking to Neil; his dedication to his mission is like no other we have ever come across. But is he on to something amazing or on a wild goose chase?Neil's relentless pursuit of the thylacine stems from his fascination with this unique creature, often referred to as the Tasmanian tiger due to its distinct striped back. Despite official declarations of its extinction in the 20th century, rumours and occasional reported sightings have kept the legend alive. Neil is among those who are convinced that the thylacine continues to roam in the remote wilderness of Tasmania and mainland Australia. His search involves extensive fieldwork, setting up camera traps, and gathering eyewitness accounts from locals who claim to have seen the elusive animal. Neil's efforts have garnered a community of supporters who share his belief and hope to one day capture undeniable proof of the thylacine's existence. While sceptics argue that the chances of finding a surviving population are slim, Neil's unwavering belief and enthusiasm have inspired many to reconsider the mysteries of the natural world. Whether he eventually uncovers the living thylacine or not, Neil Waters' journey is a testament to the unyielding spirit of exploration and the enduring allure of the unknown.
