Dyslexic Dialectic

Off the cuffs conversations about society, culture, life, philosophy, anthropology, movies, games whatever else pops into my head. Join me, your favorite social scientist (because how many do you really know?), as I talk to people from all walks of life and corners of the globe, some of which are almost okay with me calling them friends.

  1. 11

Pod 11 - Unraveling Society: Music, Politics -the music of politics?

Dive into a thought-provoking exploration of the intersections between music, politics, and this crazy society of ours. In this episode, we dissect how cultural icons like Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, and Jennifer Aniston influence political discourse. From the power of celebrity endorsements to the nuanced dynamics of race, class, and gender in everyday life, our discussion sheds light on the complexities of understanding the current social issues. Join us as we tackle critical topics like meritocracy, empathy, and social institutions while reflecting on the role of education and knowledge we want to pass on the next generations. Considering the stat of the world they will certainly need all the help then can get.

  2. 10

Pod 10 - Solidarity for your neighbors ...solidarity for your community

In today’s episode, we tackle the deep-rooted isolation and polarization fueled by modern capitalism, social media, and systemic inequality. Why are we more divided than ever, despite sharing so many common struggles? We explore how our economic system and digital platforms foster competition over community, creating rifts that weaken our potential for solidarity and collective action. From the loss of manufacturing jobs to the erosion of in-person connection, our guest discusses how these trends lead to alienation and shares why face-to-face interactions and grassroots education might hold the key to breaking free. Tune in to discover how direct human connection and shared spaces can help bridge ideological divides, foster empathy, and empower communities to challenge systemic injustices together.

  3. 9

Pod 9 - how science became corporate

Another of the cuff conversation, or rather maybe the beginning of the brother discussion about academia. My honored guest is a first class professor with a PhD in history and a colorful and fruitful life that most of us can only dream about. However, his biggest life achievement is being a friend of mine, something only few dear to even try. Together we dive in to: who was and who is doing science. Some personal hatred of mine towards certain academic disciplines ( no, not economy, not this time but soon they will feel my wrath), few historical figures and most of all funding. Like in real estate, academia today has 3 rules: funding, funding and funding.

  4. 8

Pod 8 - Positionality and social change

(Insert AI generated text), just in case anyone actually reads this.

  5. 7

Pod 7 - Talking, men, masculinity and do men need to add more to the dabete?

Another engaging and off-the-cuff discussion as two social scientists explore the complexities of masculinity in today’s world. We start by briefly mentioning a relatively recent move, Promising Young Woman, and then dive in to a potential problem of men talking about masculinity. In a way, this is our bast improvising take on how to contribute to this conversation, who should be talking and what or why. Maybe we even mention how? Well, there is only one way you can find out!

Pod 5 - academic advice for international graduate students and post-docs

Disclaimer: this pod is just a friendly opinion sharing advice, we do not take any responsibility regarding any action taken inspired by anything we say or imply. Another off the cuffs conversation but this time we give our most sincere advice to international graduate students and post-docs. We explore the intricacies of getting offers, negotiation, and understanding your worth in the socio-economic landscape. We tackle the challenges of giving advice and the importance of recognizing your position without internalizing limitations. Teaching tips are on the house especially for physics classes. Drawing from experiences like teaching and anecdotes from college life, we celebrate the resilience and brilliance of today's students. Somehow I managed to include a story about where I have to demonstrate my parking-fu to Morpheus (played brilliantly by my dad)."too many new things hit you at the same time when you are starting collage" and yet students are still amazing!

  7. 5

Pod - 4 Left, Right, Kusturica - progressive turning conservative

Of the cuffs conversation about the intriguing journey of Emir Kusturica, exploring his unexpected shift towards conservatism tin foil hat-ness. We "delve deep" into Kusturica's filmography and his ties to the life of legendary soccer player Diego Armando Maradona. We even manage to throw Star Wars world polarization tendencies in to the mix, somehow (probably just for clicks). We finish with a surprise "visit" from a prominent French actor who becomes a central figure in our provocative conclusion. Tune in as we connect the dots and explore these compelling narratives from cinema to sports and to infinity and beyond.

  8. 4

Pod 3 - Desolating suspension of disbelief (Civil War, Dune) and hubris of Christopher Nolan

Our conversation dives into diverse topics from the latest in theater experiences with "Civil War 2024," to reflections on "Dune," actor critiques, and the allure of cinematic sandscapes. We'll navigate through thoughts on script-writing prowess, suspension of disbelief challenges, and the contrasting believably of space epics like "2049" and "The Fifth Element." Explore the realms of sci-fi movies versus social science, explain how Christopher Nolan only thinks he is Stanley Kubrick. Biology and "Game of Thrones.", data tracking and marketing "knowledge" and nuances between self-help and emotional support. We end with trying to answer an age old question: If Godzilla shows up in Chicago do we go back to work after a week?

  9. 3

Pod 2 - Hidden conservatism in radical French philosophy and justices for Foucault

Join us for a captivating episode where we delve into the creative approaches of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, exploring French radical philosophy and their profound impact on disrupting the status quo. We then shift to Michel Foucault's concept that "power is knowledge," examining how his life was shaped by institutional knowledge. Our discussion unfolds around a hypothesis about conservative origins of Foucault's ideas of spiritual or epistemic power. Ultimately, we offer a unique (hopefully) perspective on the dynamics of social power and knowledge.<in 1940s ads voice> Tune in for a thought-provoking exploration of these philosophical giants' ideas and their enduring relevance today...... "Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Newspapers for sail!"

  10. 2

Pod 1 - Jacques Derrida Vs Nikola Tesla - From the periphery and in to the Ivory Tower

A conversation about science, history, philosophy, hegemony, and current events sprinkled with Batman and other popular culture references. We explore the intriguing journey of outsiders entering the ivory tower through the lenses of Derrida and Nikola, discovering their motivations and the challenges they face. We delve into the personal toll and potential outcomes of this transformative process, offering a unique perspective drawn from our own experiences and similar journeys. Better mics are on the way!

Pod 6 - American generations, governance and early complex society

We start our conversations with my friends book on American generations. We dive into examining how societal perceptions and cultural norms have evolved over time by addressing common misconceptions about generational differences and their impact on political landscapes and social values. We find a cheeky way to give a shout out to the movie "Independence" day and even more so to "Idiocracy" and it's wonderful Costco history museum. After a muddled description of Louis Althusser's theories on capitalist ideology we quickly move in to topics of early social organization, and the formation of social power structures and institutions, hierarchy and hegemony. We conclude with the importance of the lessons of the past, knowledge in general and lack of anthropology education rather then empathy in the world. And yes, I give my very controversial take on Bronze Age warfare....
