En-ERGY in Motion (™) Suzy Rowland chats to Professor Sam Wass: Screen-time for Under 5s: Harmful or Helpful?
Your eyes are not deceiving you: This is the 2nd time Professor Sam Wass has been on the show - I enjoy chatting to him as his research is fascinating and potentially policy-shifting. As a developmental cognitive neuroscientist and Director of Early Years and Youth (Institute for the Science of Early Years and Youth (ISEY) at University of East London, UK. At the University, his work involves studying how early environments including pre-school screen use, can shape early brain development, utilising world-leading methods. These insights can support policy advice, training and consultancy.Professor Sam's research advised a UK Government recommendation for children under 2 to not use screens at all and children up to the age of 5 to have only 1 hour of screen use!Is this harmful or helpful to the developing brain as we know our world is digital now and kids need to learn these skills but is the early use of Apps and technology, harmful or helpful for early brain development? Listen in and make up your own mind! You can find Professor Sam Wass on LinkedIn.Support the showSuzy quit her corporate career to do thousands of hours of psychology research. En-ERGY in Motion (™) Suzy Rowland chats to Rose Carter, Founder & CEO Inspires Tuition
Chatting to Rose was like having a cold shower! She's refreshing, honest and speaks from the heart. It's wonderful to meet people with her level of compassion for children who can sometimes get overlooked. Especially those who are long term out of mainstream education and battling a number of complex issues. Funny thing how as adults we forget the intensity of emotions we feel when we are children. We expect them to do what they're told without argument and follow advice just because. I love reminding myself that they are adults with a bit less experience. Many children, especially those carrying trauma, or difficult early life experiences are wise beyond their years and have clear ideas of who they are and how they need to progress in life. We are experiencing a continued surge of children who are out of school and unable to cope in traditional educational settings. Rose has made this area of work her purpose through providing safe and accessible space for young learners. Listen to her experiences and you will see how her personality and patience allow her to achieve where some have walked away. It will serve so many of us to remember the wisdom that some young people are gifted with. I'd love to hear your experiences of working with young, wise people in your communities.Rose's biography: A Multi Award-winning Founder & CEO Inspires Tuition (Alternative Education Provision) and Inspires Community Provision CIC✨SEMH education specialist✨Parental SEND support ✨Speaker and consultant - SEND & InclusionSupport the showSuzy quit her corporate career to do thousands of hours of psychology research. Sarah Templeton, like many ADHD women, is on a mission! It's clear in everything she does and says. Challenging the pupil to prison pipeline addressing head on the injustice that ADHD men and women face in the UK Criminal Justice System, especially if they're undiagnosed or untreated, dealing with ongoing trauma or mental health challenges. Which many of us do. Childhood trauma and ADHD has many similar presentations. It's not all superpowers and success towers. Even if brilliance is part of an individual's ADHD narrative, there is usually a bucket load of obstacles they've had to dodge along the way. Sarah's passion for shining a light on undiagnosed ADHD and how so many young people are imprisoned because of their impulsive or dangerous acts, you will want to find out more. If your child is already showing signs of rejecting authority, appears to be highly oppositional, you may be at your wits end. Sarah has been there and she's literally written the book about it! En-ERGY in Motion (™) Suzy Rowland chats to Esme Buxton, Founder The Paddock Journal
Esme Buxton is a narrative-driven luxury photographer helping brands deliver memorable campaigns that drive both artistic excellence and measurable results. She is also a Formula 1 fan and founded the Paddock Journal in response to a gap in the market to explore the fashion and brand values of Formula One. I was following the Paddock Journal online and loved the aesthetic and how cleverly Esme has blended the two worlds and clearly her two passions. Launching a magazine is a huge achievement and I wanted to find out more about this clear-sighted woman fulfilling her dreams to create something fresh for Formula One fans, especially female F1 followers. Esme says of the publication: "Our values have always and will always be about inclusion, representation, authenticity and community. 🫶🏻 Setting up the magazine was mega hard work, but I'm so glad I went for it!"Instagram @thepaddockjournal@esmebuxtonphotographySupport the showSuzy quit her corporate career to do thousands of hours of psychology research. En-ERGY IN Motion (™) Suzy Rowland chats to Khembe Clarke on Black Hair, Beauty & Wellness.
'My Hair is my Crown of Glory, Not a Badge of Shame!'Khembe Clarke has over 4 decades over experience of as a natural hair stylist now specialising in loc starts and maintenance. She is tapping into Black Women's yearning not only to return to 'natural' but to confidently care for and style and 'rock' their natural texture and length. Khembe was trained by Talia Waheed seventeen years ago when she came to the UK to deliver a Masterclass. This inspired her to organise Return to Your Roots Festival giving black women in the UK the opportunity to celebrate their hair. Many women are rejecting the good hair, bad hair tropes of their hair in place of more positive narratives celebrating their curls. "Women are starting to recongise the immense damage harsh chemical relaxers, perms and hair products have done to their hair and scalp."Khembe's event is almost a decade strong and is a staple on Birmingham's annual calendar. It has become it's own 'village' for the black community in Birmingham to share hair tips, share stories of resilience and recovery and most importantly share in remembrance of being a community of each other as children of the African diaspora!Support the showSuzy quit her corporate career to do thousands of hours of psychology research. En-ERGY IN Motion (™) Dr. Tiffany Nelson shares her research on: Experiences of Black Autistic Girls in the UK school system
The experiences of Black Autistic girls in UK schools are shaped by complex layers of identity that significantly impact their educational journey. Existing literature highlights a significant gap in research on the Black Autistic experience, particularly regarding masking and camouflaging Autistic traits. By centring the voices of Black Autistic girls with experience of masking and camouflaging in school, Dr. Tiffany Nelson's research aims to address that gap, being the first of its kind. Dr. Tiffany Nelson's research sets out the historical and current socio-political context of autism, disability, race, and gender, addressing the intersectional and socially constructed nature of identity. Dr Nelson's research findings revealed themes that underscore the importance of 1. acceptance and belonging, 2. managing social norms, 3. the intersection of autism with race and gender, 4. sensory challenges, and 5. the critical role of support and understanding. Here's an abstract of Dr. Tiffany's thesis: https://repository.essex.ac.uk/39207/2/Research%20Thesis%20Jordan-Nelson.pdfBiography: Dr Tiffany Nelson is a child, community, and educational psychologist and a proud neurodivergent practitioner. En-ERGY IN Motion (™) Suzy Rowland chats to Professor Sam Wass, Child Psychologist from The Secret Life of 4 and 5 year Olds.
Professor Sam Wass, Baby Development Lab at the University of East London and Child Psychologist in the multi-award-winning Channel 4 show The Secret Life of 4 and 5-Year-Olds. A blooming buzzing confusion: young brains and neurodivergence. In this talk, we start with some key findings on how children’s brains develop, and why all young children (not just neurodivergent ones) experience the world as a ‘blooming, buzzing confusion’. Then, we talk about the neuroscience of neurodiversity, and the different pathways that can cause a child to become neurodivergent. We talk about the neuroscience of why neurodivergent children like repetition, and why unsuitable environments can trigger meltdowns, and we talk about how repetition and rhythms drive early brain development.Listen in, it will change the way you think, teach and parent!https://www.uel.ac.uk/about-uel/staff/sam-wassSupport the showSuzy quit her corporate career to do thousands of hours of psychology research.
