Myeisha Essex, founder of Essex Media Group and wellness practitioner, is one of my big sisters from Bennett College. We’ve watched each other evolve into the women we are today. She’s worked in #media and #entertainment her entire career for brands such as Essence Magazine, The Shade Room, The Real Talk Show, and other entertainment brands. After undergoing a spiritual transformation in Queen Afua's #SacredWomanAscension program, she made a radical shift to healing work. EPEC Conversations is a platform where we tell human stories of trauma, triumph, and resilience. Dominique "Dom" Reynolds is my college classmate. At 28 she lost her vision in a car accident in what was a series of casual negligence on behalf of the healthcare providers she sought medical attention from. Since losing her vision Dom has encountered discrimination and has navigated joblessness because of her disability. In the process, she's started hand-making blankets and has launched her digital store. Dominique has learned a lot about herself and the people around her. She sits at the intersection of a lot of identities. As a Black, Queer, person living with a disability, Dom leaves it all on the table in this interview. In May of 2019 I became the first in my family to graduate with a master’s degree. My family came to celebrate and the honor was a noticeable feat because our family has been significantly impacted by generational trauma. For the first time ever, we traveled together in a state outside of our hometown and we now get to tell a different story because my first graduation looked very different. Over the past few years we have become intentional about working through our traumas of the past. We decided to capture this moment because it represents a turning point for us. Our family history is decorated with violence, mental health disorders, addiction, and the child welfare and criminal justice systems. This intergenerational conversation had between myself, my little sister Waleena, my grandmother Annette and great aunt Brenda is a part of an ongoing practice on our way to healing the generational curses we've inherited. Trauma is inevitable. At some point or another we all will encounter a scary circumstance we are unsure how we’ll live through. The purpose of this discussion is to normalize the inevitable and spark a conversation about how to work through our woes when trauma eventually meets us.
