Ep 26. TheAnonDcrest: Game Developer & Streamer

I often struggle with the fact that I have many hobbies and interests and therefore my focus is spread thin. Because of this, I often hesitate when a new interests arise. "Ohhh should I be doing this instead of this other thing I have been doing?" Dylan (@TheAnonDcrest) also has many hobbies and interests and he gets into them in full force without hesitation. I admire that. Talking to Dylan about his D&D campaign was a great example of this. I have never played D&D, but Dylan's expertise, knowledge, and insight on the game was no less fascinating. Dylan is also one of the most articulate people I have ever met so I have no doubt that he is a great dungeon master. D&D is just one of many hobbies Dylan has. Dylan is a game developer, streamer, photographer, and a D&D enthusiast. Thank you for turning in. I hope you enjoy my conversation with TheAnonDcrest. 🔗 Check out: twitch.tv/theanondcrest @theanondcrest @dylanchanproductions 🔗 Find me on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/everythinggoeswithpascal/Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6eWCYx1e8ioHnSNQmuQxfc?si=408a3a11a53a45f3Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/everything-goes-with-pascal/id1702285468

Ep 25. Jessie Liu: Finance Grad & Fashion Enthusiast

Jessie is a full time finance grad and at the same time she is studying psychology part time. We work at the same place and she often hits you with thought provoking questions out of nowhere and shares her interesting perspectives and of course I welcome them. This following conversation with Jessie was not an exception. I had a lot of fun talking with her about YouTube, bespoke clothing and accessories, and fashion. The highlight for me has to be when she shared her phone notes. Someone said the window to the soul are not the eyes, but your phone notes and Jessie’s phone notes are the prime example of that. I think her whole life is on it. I am grateful to have this podcast as a platform to get to know other people better and I am grateful for you to be here supporting me by listening. If you feel like following me, do consider checking out my Instagram and YouTube and I am on most podcast platforms too including Spotify and Apple podcast. On all platforms, I go by Everything Goes with Pascal. Yep, just 'Everything Goes' was already taken. Thank you again for tuning in and thank you Jessie for being on my show. Liam is also the founder of @streamin_nz which is a community for NZ streamers. I have a lot of respect and admiration for people that want to and can start initiatives like this and right now Liam is crushing it. I had the most fascinating conversation with Liam about the origin of Streamin NZ and KiwiRivals and the future. Ep 23. Dr. Jessica Ellwood: Doctor on passion, priorities, and cow questions

I have been flatting since 2013 and one of the best flats I was in was with Jess. I’ve known Jess for only three years and flatted together for one year. During that year, we went through several lockdowns together, Jess got engaged, and Jess went from a medical student to a doctor. Maybe because of that I feel like I’ve know her for so much longer. It’s always a good time hanging out with Jess but have been unable to do so for a while because she has been busy preparing for an exam as part of her journey of becoming a surgeon. So it was great catching up with her and hear how they went and ask all these questions which we used to do at the flat. 🔗 Find me on: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/everythinggoeswithpascal/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pascal-cheon/ Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6eWCYx1e8ioHnSNQmuQxfc?si=408a3a11a53a45f3 Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/everything-goes-with-pascal/id1702285468

Ep 22. Andrew Ockleston: Bespoke Tailor & Store Manager on clothes, tailoring, and sustainability

I have been on a hunt for a double breasted suit blazer for a while and one of the places I looked is the Working Style store on Ponsonby where I met Andrew. Andrew is the store manager there, was very kind asking what I wanted and showing me around the shop, and especially listening to my frustration of not being able to find a decent double breasted suit blazer. Sometime during our conversation, I realised Andrew was rocking a double breasted jacket!  I asked him where he got it from and he told me that he made it which to me is the biggest flex as far as it comes to clothes. He told me that he got interested in tailoring, trained under a bespoke tailor, and have been making his own clothes for years.  As a fan of good quality clothes and fashion, I had to have him on the podcast to talk about tailoring and clothes. As a consumer, my conversation with Andrew opened a whole world of bespoke tailored clothes. This has been very exciting as it added a whole new dimension of clothes shopping for me. Also as a consumer of clothes, I have been aware of the sustainability of my consumerism and one way I have been practicing this has been to purchase few good quality pieces which would last a long time and I now realise that bespoke tailoring is as good as it gets when it comes to that.  🔗 Links: https://www.workingstyle.co.nz/store/ponsonby https://www.savvyrow.co.uk/ https://www.permanentstyle.com/ https://www.youtube.com/@bernadettebanner https://www.youtube.com/@savilerowtales https://www.youtube.com/@kirbyallison 🔗 Find me on: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/everythinggoeswithpascal/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pascal-cheon/ Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6eWCYx1e8ioHnSNQmuQxfc?si=408a3a11a53a45f3 Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/everything-goes-with-pascal/id1702285468

Ep 21. Clément Sreeves: Data Scientist/Chess Master on data, chess, and climbing

Today’s guest Clément Sreeves is someone I wanted to have on my podcast from Day 1. Clément was my manager at Luma Analytics where I used to work where he still works today as a data science manager.  Clément is one of the most knowledgeable, intelligent, and passionate data scientists I have ever known. So working closely with him improved me as a data scientist every single day. As much as I look up to his technical skills, Clément is also one of the kindest, most gentle, understanding, and thoughtful people I know and I look up to that a lot and work hard to have more of those qualities.  On top of that, Clément’s dedication to climbing, his master ranking in chess, and his overall mindset made him at the top of my guest wishlist.  Although I have left Luma and I am loving my new job, I still look back to those days when I was excited to go to work every single day and recording this episode with Clément was much of the same fun! I invited Clément on my podcast to pick his brain on how he keeps up to date with the data world, why he prefers Lichess over chess.com, and many other things.  🔗 Links: The Analytics Engineering Podcast (dbt Labs, Inc) https://open.spotify.com/show/4BKMMeVXk4jJnAQSqGSJvE The Analytics Everywhere Podcast (Preset) https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-analytics-everywhere-podcast/id1612532253 🖥️ People Clément follows: Raymond Hettinger Peter Norvig Jeremy Howard 🔗 Find me on: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/everythinggoeswithpascal/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pascal-cheon/Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6eWCYx1e8ioHnSNQmuQxfc?si=408a3a11a53a45f3Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/everything-goes-with-pascal/id1702285468

Ep 20. Brendon Leung: Artist on art, expression, and experience

Brendon Leung is a represented artist at the Trish Clark Gallery. Brendon studied Bachelor of Visual Arts and Master of Design at Unitec. Throught that and since then, he has been part of and done several group exhibitions and solo exhibitions, accepted and completed the Karekare house residency. Brendon’s paintings are composed of abstract geometries affinity to nature. Not only does his relationship with the surroundings is expressed in his paintings, but it seems to be embedded in his process, through his painting on found wood and his use of natural materials including coffee and tea. A big part of his artistic expression is also drawn out in the form of ceramics and I am lucky to have one of his works which I have been cherishing for several years.  I am always inspired by those who love and constantly hone their crafts and to me Brendon is a prime example of that.   In this episode, Brendon and I talk about how he learned that he could not survive without painting, how he developed his style, his philosophy, and a lot of other things.  🔗 Relevant links: https://brendonleung.com/ https://www.instagram.com/brendon.leung/ 🔗 Find me on: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/everythinggoeswithpascal/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pascal-cheon/Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6eWCYx1e8ioHnSNQmuQxfc?si=408a3a11a53a45f3Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/everything-goes-with-pascal/id1702285468

Jhan Magisa is a Data Analyst at TVNZ and part of the film production team called Oil Slick Candy. I have had the pleasure to work with Jhan on several data projects and he is one of the most passionate and talented data analysts I have worked with. This is why I was surprised when Jhan told me he self-taught data analysis. Jhan seems to apply this high level of craftsmanship and interest in various aspects of life. This shows in his passion for creative writing, game dev, app dev, and learning languages. In this episode, Jhan and I talk about self-motivation, time management, passive learning, coding and data and much more. 🔗 Relevant links:https://www.instagram.com/oilslickcandy/https://www.youtube.com/@OilSlickCandyFilmshttps://www.linkedin.com/in/jhan-magisa/ 🔗 Find me on: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/everythinggoeswithpascal/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pascal-cheon/Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6eWCYx1e8ioHnSNQmuQxfc?si=408a3a11a53a45f3Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/everything-goes-with-pascal/id1702285468

Ep 18. Timothy Pistotti: NLP & Linguistics PhD Student on LLMs, languages, and multi-discipline collaborations

Tim is a PhD student across the School of Computer Science and the School of Cultures, Languages, and Linguistics at the University of Auckland. He is part of the research groups Strong AI and NAOInstitute. Tim’s research is in generating data for low-resource languages to train large language models. As large language models become a more and more powerful tool (case in point Chat-GPT), it is becoming a bigger and bigger part of our lives. So it is great to see that there is an effort to make this tool available for wider users. Tim grew up surrounded by foreign exchange students at home, and perhaps because of that he has always been interested in traveling and languages. After his undergraduate at the University of California, he taught and traveled for a while before settling in New Zealand to pursue a Masters in Linguistics. After his Masters, he joined a company as a linguistics researcher. There he identified various AI applications he wanted to try out and he started picking up skills to do so. With these ideas, he approached the university to study a PhD where he is today.  In this episode, I had a great conversation with Tim about his research for low-resource languages, Tim’s love for languages and linguistics, and  being a bridge between Linguistics and Computer science and how more and more of these bridges are being built across multiple disciplines, and much more.  Make sure to check out the “AI: Now and Future” symposium by NAOI to get a chance to listen to some interesting talks and sit next to Tim! 🔗 Relevant links: https://www.linkedin.com/in/timothy-pistotti-a2685b95/ https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/science/our-research/naoinstitute.html https://aiforum.org.nz/event/ai-now-and-future-a-symposium-by-naoi/
