Father Samba

Greetings, I am Father Samba. My first full-length album "Songs of College" is coming out in May!

  1. 12

    Let's Not Be Roommates

This track was cut from "All About Girls/All About Boys Volume 2."

  2. 11

    Blockbuster (Single Version)

  3. 10

    Feel Better Now

This song is about getting my life back on track my senior year.

  4. 9

    What Happens Now

This song is about feeling like a failure when comparing myself to people in my high school class. Imagine a freshman year in college who was now an underachiever at community college.

  5. 8

(How Do You) See the Day

This was the title track to my 2021 EP “See the Day.” For about two minutes, we depart from my sad, depressing life and go to my mind where I hold introspective thoughts.

  6. 7

    Wake Up, Charlie (Samba's Version)

Another song reused from my “See the Day” EP, this one is about the death of my friend Cable. I wrote the lyrics in the middle of the night while tuning out a group FaceTime call.

  7. 6

    Nobody Knows You

This song is about loneliness in the dorms. During my spring semester, I didn’t have my friends. The ukulele is featured in this song because I was in the Ukulele Club. I wasn’t really friends with anyone in it, but I needed to play music somewhere.

  8. 5

    Go Dog Go

This song is about driving to my internship during rush hour traffic. The title of the song is borrowed from a children’s book by P.D. Eastman. The vocals and instruments are inspired by “Oh Children” by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

  9. 4

    Toxic Woman Blues

This is the first of two songs to use the blues progression. And what's a better precursor to the blues than heartache?

  10. 3

    Foggy Windows

The second song to use a blues progression, this track takes a more rockabilly sound. While it wasn't recorded until late 2022, it was written a year prior in 2021.

  11. 2

    Don't Leave Me

By this point, I transferred schools, where I lived on campus. This song is about a new kind of loss: losing someone who is still living. Each verse is about a different person.

  12. 1

    l o s s

The words spoken are selections from obituaries of my family members who died in 2021. The background fight song was added to symbolize trying to cope with loss while preparing to transfer schools.

  13. 0

    Pepto Bismol

This is about having physical and mental illness in the dorms. The percussion you hear is a washing machine. It was common to hear this sound while in the hallways. Both the melody and rhyme pattern is simple and childlike, akin to the music of Daniel Johnston. I wrote this the week after moving off campus.

  14. -1

    That's Okay

This song takes place after I moved off campus and was searching for an internship. This period only lasted for five weeks, but it was dreadful. I had to commute an hour one way two or three times a week. It was usually for just a single class. The song is bitter, and I sing in a style similar to Tom Waits.
