Field Hospitals: Their History and Future

In the 1990s the Defence Medical Services integrated with the National Health Service. This meant that regular and reserve Army medical personnel work within the NHS, alongside their civilian counterparts, in part to keep their clinical skills and training current. In this episode we find out more about how this works.

Reservists account for almost half of the strength of the Army Medical Services. These are the doctors, vets, dentists, and nurses who work in the National Health Service but volunteer their time in the Army. We explore how their experiences in both inform their practice as medical professionals.

When not on deployment the Field Hospital maintains a state of readiness, but what happens when it is deployed? In this episode we find out what Deployed Hospital Care Facilities look like when out in the field, and what elements are required to treat wounded soldiers.

22 Field Hospital in its various guises has been involved in most UK military operations over the past 100 years, and exists during peacetime as a cadre unit, meaning that it retains a permanent staff of officers and qualified clinical personnel. We find out about its people and organisation.

In this episode we explore the formation of the field hospital as part of the Army’s medical organisation, to be able to treat wounded soldiers who require more than routine first aid. We also explore the role of the Field Hospital during health crises as they deliver humanitarian aid.
