Starting Again: Spending time with The D&D 5.5 Starter Set
Send us Fan MailWelcome Back to the Table! This week we get to spend some time with a full studio (hooray!) and talk a little about the experience Arcadia and Jess had running the Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set for Dungeons and Dragons 5e. We get different perspectives on both playing in and running a game set in the starter campaign as well as dive a little into the differences in experience for seasoned and new players. The team agrees that it is an accessible introduction to the game for new players while getting their minds around some of the stark contrasts it holds to earlier editions. We see a starting adventure designed to take you and your character only so far all while acknowledging that it is an rules ultralight walk through the major elements of a broader and deeper game experience. Send us Fan MailWelcome Back to the Table! This week Malcolm is alone in the studio for an episode dealing with absences in your TTRPG group. Everyone has dealt with and most likely been an absent player or two at the table. What can send GMs into panic and cause disruptions in your game, doesn’t have. We take a look at the nature of missing games, the likely and the underlying causes and give you the gamer ideas for how to handle these inevitable events at your table. Vampire: the Masquerade–A Beginner’s Guide to Clans: Exploring Ravnos & Hecata
Send us Fan MailWelcome Back to the Table! This week we continue our VTM Beginner’s Guide to clans while sending healing potions to Arcadia and missing Jess at the table. That’s right, somebody didn’t read the memo and left Tori and Malcolm unsupervised on the mics. Tori brings us the world of the Ravnos, a rare and mysterious find in modern nights. These Kindred work outside of the social realms of other Vampires and decimated to low numbers, have been cursed with the need to move from one place to another, making feeding and survival all the more challenging to an outcasted and oft hunted clan. Malcolm comes back from the break to dive into the Hecata Clanglomerate. A bloodied history of betrayal and haunting power brought together this group of Necromantic beasts who operate as a familial structured organization dancing the lines of dealings in the realms of the living, Kindred and the dead. TTRPG Stories and Scripted Media – Game Tools for Storytelling at the Table
Send us Fan MailWelcome Back to the Table! We are down one Tori for today’s discussion on telling stories. But Arcadia, Jess and Malcolm peel back the story teller role in both sets of media. We look at the audiences, similarities and differences in scripted media production vs the chaotic collaborative storytelling found in most TTRPG experiences. What advantages a scripted media piece has in its message interpretation and when telling your story at a table as a GM can turn your players into unwilling cast members. Where is the intersection, what are the risks and where we each find the balance. Jess is able to relate stories of her current game prep as they compare to the efforts of writing a novel. We get to the good parts of what tools are there for a GM to move story and game forward when needed and learn its not always bad to hop on the GM Express for the sake of Functional Funcilitation. ← (It’s gunna be a thing)Support the showhttps://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Contact Us on Our Socials:FacebookInstagramA production of WordLeaf Media

Send us Fan MailWelcome Back to the Table! Tori is downing health potions and is missed today. Settle in for a fun and telling chat with Malcolm, Arcadia and Jess. We discuss what player tendencies we find challenging beyond the screen and try applying some D&D classes on ourselves. TTRPG Source Materials: Hitting the Books at the Table
Send us Fan MailWelcome Back to the Table! We are letting our inner Book-Goblins out today! Join Arcadia, Malcolm, Tori and Jess for a look at some old school tomes from our library of tomes. Today Tori opens up with a little compare and contrast on two sources for everything from little minions to BBEGs. The stories behind the releases and inclusions of both the Monster Manual for AD&D and subsequently, the Fiend Folio follow all the delicious twists and turns that a 1980’s TSR publishing effort offers and shows us how and why some ideas, images and even monsters do and don’t live on from version to version. After the break Malcolm cracks up the much-discussed 1985 “Gygaxian Gift” of AD&D’s Unearthed Arcana. A supplement as famous for its inclusions of new character classes, playable races and new magic as it was for its glaring errors, OP rules application and potential as desperate grab for cash under weight of a beleaguered company. Discworld: Adventures In Anhk-Morpork: Narrative Satire At the Table
Send us Fan MailWelcome Back to the Table! Today Arcadia, Tori, Malcolm and Jess sit down to discuss the Terry Pratchett Disc World RPG update as presented by Mordiphius Games. What we know, what we like and a bit on what others are saying about the game. We take some time to step in the setting, nod to the books and media that in doubt influenced the game and explore what, if any niche space the game has in a crowded Narrative Driven IP RPG market. After a break we go further into the art and playstyle of the game and its potential to allow players satirical narrative resolution in place of dice, tables and cards. While we all agree a table like ours might make use of the best parts of the game and world, that it is not for all tables and doesn’t stroke the brains of those character optimization, statistical complexity, group battle players. Vampire: the Masquerade–A Beginner’s Guide to Clans: Exploring Salubri & Brujah
Send us Fan MailWelcome Back to the Table! We have a full and festive studio for another dive into the World of Darkness with two more Guides to Clans for Beginners in VTM. Tori Starts us off with the story of the Salubri, an odd duck in Vampire lore. The Salubri were healers whose origins date back to the oldest of nights but their Empathy served to make them a target and continues to be their bane. Many a challenge await those players who embark on the path of the Unicorn, 3rd Eye Feelers of the Kindred. Vampires choosing lunch to become lunch…for said lunch. After the break Arcadia peels back the tropes surrounding Clan Brujah and reveals are complex, capable and dynamic clan to play at your table. The brute thugs of modern nights don’t show us all of the intelligence, machinations and rage of this deep clan. From playstyles to lore and more, join us for this latest episode of FA! Multi-Class Clowning – Dimensional Characters at the Table
Send us Fan MailWelcome Back to the Table! You’ve really locked into a strange one this week! We have a full studio for a conversation (that just about gets going) on Dual and Multi-Class characters, rules and impacts in D&D in contrast to other games and systems. Tori introduces us to her Rouge (and more) who are using the rules of Multi-Classing at the table to progress the character through a specific skill tree, with an end result in mind. Jess tell us of her Wizlock, whose path was forged through the shared story telling between player and GM. After the break, Arcadia takes us out of the ampersand and into an exploration of how other TTRPGs address the concepts and mechanics of effective ‘Multi-Class’ game play. Comparisons are made, words like “clunky” and “upper-decker”, for some reason, are bandied about with great abandon, in the latest episode and high water mark of hilarity in the FA Studios! Home Brewing Game Settings – Inspiring A World at Your Table
Send us Fan MailWelcome Back to the Table! This week Malcolm sits down with Jess to discuss her wildly popular Home Brew Campaign; Japan In Space. This 5e setting is a product of two great loves, interests and fandoms, bringing together a historical age of strife and change in Bakumatsu Japan and the operatic expansive elements found in Star Wars media. More than a TTRPG in a Galactic skin, Jess draws from her knowledge base as an academic who Majored in History and someone who has spent years living in Japan to bring unique cultural and historical components to her players at the table. She offers tips on employing those ingredients into a homebrew game and how offering players the opportunity to do more than hack and slash through the world allows for unexpected moments of great RP and some hilarious character choices! Vampire: The Masquerade - A Beginner’s Guide to Clans: Exploring Gangrel and Tremere
Send us Fan MailWelcome back to the table — and welcome back for Season 2! Malcolm, Tori, and Jess return for another Clan Comparison from VTM. Tori leads off with Clan Gangrel, a clan made up of strays and rogues who value strength, independence, and survival above all else. These vampires aren’t interested in the shenanigans of courtly politics; instead, they focus on living their unlife on their own terms. Closer to the Beast than most other clans, the Gangrel truly are a different breed.Malcolm follows with Clan Tremere. The Blood Mages represent a very different kind of clan — one born from human origins rather than traditional vampiric lineage. These sorcerers wield knowledge as both weapon and currency, and they’re not shy about showing it. Scheming, calculating, and steeped in secrets they perhaps shouldn’t possess, the Tremere famously seized their place among the undead by transforming themselves through dark means. With a structure that often feels almost mafia-like, they carefully position themselves within the greater vampire society.Thank you for listening and helping make a second season possible!Support the showhttps://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Contact Us on Our Socials:FacebookInstagramA production of WordLeaf Media

Save vs. AI: A Real Discussion About AI Bot Usage in TTRPGs
Send us Fan MailWelcome back to the table! This week, Tori, Arcadia, and Malcolm are in the studio with Jess for a perhaps uncomfortable chat about the predictive elements quickly growing in our hobby space. With no wrong answers, honest conversation sheds light on where using technology as a tool makes sense—enhancing experiences and opening access to TTRPGs.After the break, we shift the lens to focus on what we can agree we don’t like about AI in general, along with its very real—and potential—risks to the integrity of roleplaying at the table. Social media has made this more than most topics feel divisive and ugly to even bring up, but in a community growing as rapidly as ours—one with creative passion and talent at its core—there should always be room for these discussions.Support the showhttps://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Contact Us on Our Socials:FacebookInstagramA production of WordLeaf Media

Life Path Systems: Turning the Tables on TTRPG Character Creation
Send us Fan MailWelcome back to the table! This week, Tori, Arcadia, and Malcolm are joined by Jess for a look at Life Path System character generation. Here at Finding Atoria, we’re longtime devotees of stat block roll-ups and ability-score-driven character creation—but the Life Path System (of which there are many) offers a very different way to build a character.Life Path Systems were popularized early in games like Traveler and later refined into hallmark examples like Cyberpunk 2020. The group weighs in on what we like, what we’re still not sure about, and how these systems push us outside our comfort zones in our own RPG styles. After the break, Malcolm takes a swing at putting the podcast itself through a broad-brush Life Path System character build, modeled after the Twilight: 2000 (4th Edition) method. It’s a blast, it’s a bit clunky, and it’s ALL Finding Atoria.Support the showhttps://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Contact Us on Our Socials:FacebookInstagramA production of WordLeaf Media

TTRPG Character Creation: Tips and Tricks for Course Correction at Your Table
Send us Fan MailWelcome back to the table! This week, Tori, Arcadia, and Malcolm are joined by Jess for a discussion on how to align your character with your taste, your table, and your game. Jess shares great insight into the many aspects of character creation and development—and the occasional friction that can come with bringing a PC to life in your TTRPG.The group dives into what factors are important to keep in mind when settling on a build to play, while also acknowledging that things don’t always pan out the way we expect. After the break, Arcadia leads a conversation on what we can do as players, GMs, and tablemates when course correction needs to happen. Many games have mechanics and options built in to help players grow uniquely and adjust to fit their taste. Sometimes, though, the player needs to be open and bring those difficulties to the GM and the table at large. Knowing what to expect beforehand can only help so much, and a receptive table can be integral in making that correction stick—improving the game experience for everyone and, sometimes… helping you realize that you may not be at Your Table.https://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Support the showhttps://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Contact Us on Our Socials:FacebookInstagramA production of WordLeaf Media

Vampire: The Masquerade-A Beginner’s Guide to Clans: Exploring Toreador and Tzimisce
Send us Fan MailWelcome back to the table! This week, Tori, Arcadia, and Malcolm return to the Clans of VTM. Malcolm moderates as Tori opens with all things Toreador—the elegant artists of the Camarilla. We hear about the pain of needing beauty in your afterlife. Clan Toreador cling to the living world after the Embrace and are often found embroiled in mortal affairs, searching for the artistic inspiration and beauty that can bring a glow back to their dulled, dreary world of undeath. After the break, we hear Arcadia break down the Tzimisce Clan… yikes. These “Dragons” of vampiredom operate outside any brokered peace of the Camarilla and believe the Masquerade is a joke. The Tzimisce hold that knowledge, transformation, and control are the tenets of undeath. Horrible powers allow members of the clan to change the physical appearance of themselves or others—often with hideous results. They are passionless, cold, and calculating in a vampire world where most clans fear the fall of the Masquerade. The Tzimisce ask, “Why would you worry about your lunch knowing you existed?” To them, the Embrace is evolution. Like scientists, they pursue knowledge of both vampires and kine through endless experiments, theories, scientific application… and pain.https://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Support the showhttps://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Contact Us on Our Socials:FacebookInstagramA production of WordLeaf Media

Do You Wanna Build a Tank or a Burglar? How To Build Tank and Rogue Characters in TTRPGs
Send us Fan MailWelcome back to the table, and happy New Year’s! This week, Arcadia, Malcolm, and Tori talk about building characters. Malcolm gives us a rundown on how to build a tank, going into detail on creating a not-so-squishy, damage-dealing battlefield controller. Having “taunt” mechanics to draw fire is a big part of tank builds, and the biggest question to ask is always what you want the character to do.War clerics are a great class that can be tanked out. Heavy armor, Constitution, and buffs are key elements for a strong tank, and battlefield control can be huge for these characters. Tanks are there to draw fire and deal damage—and they can even hand out buffs along the way.Coming back from the break, Tori talks about building a dungeon crawler/burglar. As always, the first question is what you want the character to do (though Tori’s brain pauses several times during this section). Dexterity and Intelligence are almost always the most important stats for rogues. Some useful feats include Alert, Mobile, and Lucky. Rogue equipment that can help includes Gloves of Thievery, vials of acid, rope, caltrops, and grappling hooks.Always remember: this is your character—and as a rogue, there WILL be characters who don’t like you because of your class. Finding Atoria – Behind the Scenes: A Holiday Gift From Our Table
Send us Fan MailIn this episode of Finding Atoria, we go semi-dark for the holidays. Malcolm spreads some thanks (to you, most of all) and pulls the FA curtain back a bit, letting us listen in on some of the moments we share that don’t make the cut. Malcolm proves that there is never a bad time to be recording with this group in the studio… whether they know it at the time or not!We hear hilarious (and somewhat telling, lol) conversations about the role of dragons in amped-up Romantasy stories. We also get a chance to hear what happens when Star Wars conversations between recording segments turn out to be some of the best content captured (the Force is weird with these ones). Many a munchkin snippet is caught, along with some of our most comical “private” conversations accidentally recorded on mic. Enjoy! In the “Shits and Giggles” category… Malcolm tries his hand at bringing a voice to our favorite Druid’s journal—trapped in wild shape form as a good boy in our confusing dimension. Vampire: The Masquerade-A Beginner’s Guide to Clans: Exploring Ventrue & Nosferatu
Send us Fan MailIn this episode of Finding Atoria, the crew continues their Vampire: The Masquerade beginner series with a deep dive into two iconic clans that embody opposite ends of power and monstrosity.Moderated by Tori, the episode explores what it means to play either the polished ruler or the unseen manipulator of the night. Malcolm breaks down the Ventrue—the aristocratic leaders of vampire society who rule through status, influence, and refined control. Meanwhile, Arcadia examines the Nosferatu, the hidden monsters who operate from the shadows, trading beauty for secrets and wielding power through information and fear.Together, the Finding Atoria crew frames these clans as two interpretations of Dracula: the sophisticated charmer who commands a room, and the lurking horror who knows everyone’s secrets. The episode contrasts the public face of authority with the power broker behind the scenes, helping new players decide which version of undeath best fits the character they want to play.Whether you’re drawn to courtly dominance or subterranean scheming, this beginner-friendly guide offers insight into clan themes, roleplay opportunities, and storytelling potential in Vampire: The Masquerade.https://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Support the showhttps://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Contact Us on Our Socials:FacebookInstagramA production of WordLeaf Media

House Beer!... Is Homebrew Right for Your TTRPG?
Send us Fan MailThis week, Tori, Arcadia, and Malcolm are all in the studio for a lively discussion on homebrewing your TTRPG—what it is, what it isn’t, and when it shines at the table. We dig into the wonders of “The Faces of Tori” and find ourselves delightfully lost in sinking fields early and often. Homebrewing is accessible to everyone and can elevate your game, your world, and your table’s overall enjoyment. You don’t have to be a master worldbuilder to effectively homebrew rules, NPCs, encounters, or adapted mechanics that enhance your group’s experience. There’s a real freedom in setting aside the shackles of RAW, but it’s equally important to understand which rules you’re changing and why—player agency and immersion depend on it.We also talk hooks: why they matter so much, and where to find inspiration when you need it most. Starring in This Space Western: A Tale of Three Star Wars TTRPGs — Edge of the Empire, Age of Rebellion & Force & Destiny
Send us Fan Mail"Niima Outpost is that way. Stay off Kelvin Ridge. Keep away from the Sinking Fields in the north." ~ Rey to BB-8, Star Wars Episode 7: The Force AwakensWelcome back to the table! Patrick and Arcadia are joined by Jess and Coel for a dive into Star Wars TTRPG madness. We’re juggling three games this week — Edge of the Empire, Force & Destiny, and Age of Rebellion — and somehow, through some cosmic sorcery, it all works together. Mechanics were built to let you play them separately or together, and yes, we are taking full advantage of the latter. Each of us built a character from a different game, but we’re all adventuring together in an Edge of the Empire module. And, of course, homebrew sneaks in to crank everything up to 11 for shiggles while the Force… oh yes, the Force doth overflow with this lot.The Sinking Fields of the North claim their usual victims — Jess and Coel wander off into tangents about Star Wars lore, Malcolm and Arcadia try valiantly to pull them back on track, and somehow, we all still survive without getting lost in the Unknown Regions… or needing to smash the whoopty s#!t, back to Star Wars! button too many times.Strap in, grab your dice, and may the Force — plus snacks, chaos, and whatever plot hook Malcolm throws next — be with you.https://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Support the showhttps://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Contact Us on Our Socials:FacebookInstagramA production of WordLeaf Media

Thurs-Con 2025: Our Homegrown TTRPG Micro-Convention, Now With 200% More Gummy Bears
Send us Fan MailWelcome back to the table, and Happy Turkey Day! 🦃✨ This week, Tori returns with Arcadia and Malcolm to break down all things Thurs-Con — our beloved, chaotic, sugar-fueled, dice-rolling micro-convention that has officially wrapped its second glorious year.We take a joyful detour into gummy-bear discourse (as one does), then recap the full Thurs-Con experience: more people, more games, more merch, and way more gaming all weekend long. Watching the “baby gamers” discover TTRPGs for the first time was pure magic — nothing beats seeing new players fall in love with this hobby.Of course, no con is complete without a few logistical hiccups, but those bumps sparked new ideas for next year: one-shots, expanded merch, fresh faces, and maybe even finding ways to give back to the community. Malcolm is already scheming. Tori is already planning to run another table. And we’re already counting down the days.If you’ve ever thought about building your own mini-convention, we talk about that too — because helping other folks bring people together to game? That would be downright amazing.Pull up a chair and join the recap of the con that started as a wild idea and is quickly becoming a tradition.https://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Support the showhttps://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Contact Us on Our Socials:FacebookInstagramA production of WordLeaf Media

Star Wars Edge of the Empire: Session Zero in a Galaxy Far, Far Away
Send us Fan MailSession Zero, Character Creation, and BeyondWelcome back to the table! This week, Arcadia, Malcolm, and Jess talk about Star Wars! The crew tried the Star Wars TTRPG on for size, and there’s just something about that galaxy far, far away that calls to all of us. Jess’s nickname even makes an appearance… Threepio! As usual, our folks dove right in — and of course, homebrew showed up almost immediately. Character creation was a little tricky, but with any new system, there are bound to be some hiccups. The quickstart guide helped hook our intrepid adventurers, especially with some of the unique mechanics. The system really does lean into that cinematic Star Wars energy.Learning on the fly seems to be our table’s MO, and our forever GM naturally veered away from the official module “because reasons.” Knowing the universe definitely helped the narrative flow, but there was still plenty of room for new lore and surprise moments. The dice-pool resolution system was a bit clunky at first, but we suspect that’s something familiarity (and maybe a few more sessions) will smooth out. And of course, whoopty s#!t, back to Star Wars!https://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Support the showhttps://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Contact Us on Our Socials:FacebookInstagramA production of WordLeaf Media

Why Not Both: Video Games vs. TTRPGS
Send us Fan MailXP Is XP: The Many Faces of Role-Playing Arcadia, Malcolm, and Jess are in the studio this week while Tori is off gaming at her other table—because let’s be honest, every table needs their rogue. This episode dives into a conversation that’s close to many gamers’ hearts: video games versus tabletop RPGs. The crew explores what makes each experience unique, starting with one of the biggest differences—the human element. Around a physical table, you can see your friends laugh, react, and connect. Video games, on the other hand, sometimes take that face-to-face energy away… but they bring their own kind of magic.Jess admits she’s our resident video gamer, while Arcadia and Malcolm explore how both kinds of gaming can serve different needs. Whether it’s stress relief, immersion in another world, or just a healthy bit of dissociation, digital games offer plenty of benefits. And yet, as we’ve discussed in past episodes, TTRPGs offer something deeply personal: connection, creativity, and those small rituals that make every session feel special (snacks included). The group also talks about safety in online anonymity—how it can let you try on different versions of yourself or make choices you might hesitate to make in person. But there’s also something to be said for the freedom of the tabletop sandbox, where imagination sets the limits and the dice decide the rest.In the end, both experiences can offer community, catharsis, and that little serotonin hit we all chase. So why not both?https://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Support the showhttps://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Contact Us on Our Socials:FacebookInstagramA production of WordLeaf Media

The Place To Be: Finding Your People at the Local Game Store
Send us Fan MailHow Local Game Shops Became the Heart of Our Hobby This week, Malcolm, Arcadia, and Jess dive into a topic close to every gamer’s heart — local game shops! These hometown heroes are the backbone of every local gaming scene.Back in the day, hobby shops weren’t solely focused on gaming. Model kits and crafting supplies dominated the shelves, while games were often tucked into a small corner with maybe one lonely bookshelf of rulebooks. Jess’s introduction to local game stores came a little later, when they had grown into more well-rounded spaces — places where you could find everything from dice and minis to the latest adventures and accessories.Game stores have always been essential hubs for discovering new games, meeting fellow players, and finding your community. Over time, they’ve evolved from simple retail spaces into true gathering places — where you can learn, play, and connect with like-minded folks. While many shops faded for a while due to the rise of digital content, the past decade has brought a renaissance of local gaming. Where once there were only one or two stores in a city, now there might be eight or ten thriving spaces! This resurgence reflects the growing appreciation for in-person play, community, and shared storytelling.Games have never been just for kids — they’ve always been for anyone ready to imagine, laugh, and roll the dice together.Welcome to the table, friends — there’s room for all!https://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Support the showhttps://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Contact Us on Our Socials:FacebookInstagramA production of WordLeaf Media

Ribbets and Fungril and Clanks, OH MY!: Character Ancestries in Daggerheart
Send us Fan MailFrom Ribbet Tongues to Druid ShroomsWith Malcolm out this week, Tori and Arcadia dive into a lively discussion about Ancestries in TTRPGs. The rise of the narrative-focused game Daggerheart has sparked big conversations in the community about what makes it stand out for both players and GMs.In Daggerheart, ancestries aren’t just cosmetic—they’re baked directly into a character’s features and feats, carefully balanced through stress costs and resource management. The ancestry cards keep everything in one place, streamlining play and giving the game a nimble pace.Along the way, the crew explores some of the wild options at the table: overpowered Ribbet tongues, purposeful Clanks, a DrunkleBee Monk, Druid Shrooms, Simiah builds, and more. Resurrecting White Wolf: The World of Darkness Returns
Send us Fan MailA New Chapter for World of DarknessWelcome back to the table! Tori takes the moderator seat as Arcadia and Malcolm dive into the topic of White Wolf’s re-emergence. While fans of World of Darkness may have been anticipating the brand’s return, the resurrection isn’t quite the same as the White Wolf we remember from its heyday.Originally swallowed by Paradox Interactive, White Wolf’s future seemed uncertain after some promised video game projects fell through. However, with the brand’s re-emergence, White Wolf is back to creating its own content, reviving World of Darkness, and embracing a more narrative-focused approach to their games.Notably, key figures from the tabletop industry are now on the team, including Jess Lanzillo as the Creative Director of World of Darkness, and leadership that has previously worked on D&D and Magic: The Gathering is helping guide the brand. Fans can expect fresh stories, renewed creativity, and a new direction for the iconic universe.Whether you’re a longtime fan or just curious about the future of World of Darkness, this episode explores what the White Wolf revival means for the TTRPG community.Music Credit:Rise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi — licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0https://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngSupport the showhttps://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Contact Us on Our Socials:FacebookInstagramA production of WordLeaf Media

Just Not Chaotic Stupid: Using Character Alignment as a Tool, Not an Excuse
Send us Fan MailAlignments: Flexible, Not Flawed Malcolm moderates this episode as the crew dives into the topic of alignment—the classic D&D concept that has shaped characters and campaigns for decades. Alignment may or may not be a big deal at your table, but it’s been a highly rigid rule in older editions of D&D. In some editions, certain races or species were automatically assigned an alignment, limiting player freedom and creativity. The gaming world has gradually moved away from strict alignment rules, and we at FA believe characters should be allowed to grow, adapt, and evolve over time. Alignment is a tool, not a straitjacket. It can help you define your character’s moral and ethical compass, but it should be open to interpretation and change as your story unfolds. That said, alignment can also become problematic when players use it as an excuse for questionable behavior—we’re looking at you, chaotic stupid. This episode explores the benefits of using alignment as a guide rather than a rigid rule, and how to apply it in ways that enhance roleplay, collaboration, and fun at the table.Music Credit: Rise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi — licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0 https://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngSupport the showhttps://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Contact Us on Our Socials:FacebookInstagramA production of WordLeaf Media

Their expertise, influence, and sheer experience mean they’ve been able to make calls that shaped entire editions of D&D.This year, both Crawford and Perkins retired from WotC and joined Darrington Press, making waves in the TTRPG space. Daggerheart Deep Dive: Mechanics, Hope & Fear, and a New Way To Play
Send us Fan MailFunky Fresh Mechanics and a Whole Lot of Hope & Fear Welcome back to the table! We continue our dive into Daggerheart, the new TTRPG from Darrington Press. Tori takes a deep look at the rules and mechanics, showing that this is not a D&D clone—it’s its own system with unique twists drawn from other games.Malcolm points out similarities to Vampire: The Masquerade and Shadowrun, especially in the way resources are handled. The Duality Dice introduces a new mechanic of hope and fear, giving players and the GM new ways to influence the story. Combat also departs from traditional systems with changes to initiative, and the spotlight mechanic is another exciting branch from classic D&D gameplay. This system isn’t heavy on math, but the hope and fear mechanics add an engaging layer of strategy and agency. Malcolm even notes a resemblance to THAC0, though with a modern twist. While we don’t see ourselves giving up D&D anytime soon, Daggerheart offers a compelling alternative for players looking for something new—especially once the playtest lands.Music Credit: Rise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi — licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0https://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngSupport the showhttps://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Contact Us on Our Socials:FacebookInstagramA production of WordLeaf Media

They dive into Daggerheart, the new TTRPG from Darrington Press (Critical Role). This game has already made waves in the community, marking a clear step away from D&D while standing on its own.Daggerheart has the advantage of launching independently, not relying on the D&D framework, and bringing on big names like Jeremy Crawford and Chris Perkins. We discuss whether this is a bold challenge to the TTRPG establishment or simply the natural evolution following Critical Role’s success. Will Daggerheart navigate the pitfalls that WotC faced during the OGL crisis? Malcolm kicks things off by talking about the future of TTRPGs and how many players are exploring customized and solo gaming. While solo games or mechanics-heavy systems can feel more like a Choose Your Own Adventure or an RPG video game, most of us agree that it’s not the same as gathering around a table with friends.Virtual tabletops and AI-assisted tools are also gaining traction, but while these innovations are cool, they can sometimes take away from the social magic of tabletop gaming. After the break, Tori brings the conversation back to Dungeons & Dragons mechanics. What’s your favorite mechanic? We each share ours at the table, talk about RAW (Rules As Written), and even get derailed along the way. Jess nearly takes out Arcadia over a fudged mechanic, proving that having three GMs weigh in makes for a lively discussion.Music Credit: Rise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi — licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0https://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngSupport the showhttps://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Contact Us on Our Socials:FacebookInstagramA production of WordLeaf Media

From Dice to Stories: How TTRPGs Shaped Books, Movies, and Worlds
Send us Fan MailAdventures Off the Table: TTRPGs as the Inspiration Behind Fantasy Fiction Malcolm is the GM this episode, and Jess joins us in the studio! Tori wins initiative and kicks off the discussion about how TTRPGs have inspired countless stories across books, movies, and TV. Dungeons & Dragons paved the way for worlds like Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, and He-Man, showing how tabletop gaming can shape imagination on and off the table. After the break, Arcadia dives into some of her favorite fantasy books that were inspired by TTRPGs. From Homeland and Knights of the Black Rose to Dragons of Autumn’s Twilight and the Dragonlance series, we explore how these stories grew out of gaming worlds—and how they continue to inspire new adventures. We want to hear your favorite TTRPG-inspired books, too!Music Credit: Rise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi — licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0https://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngSupport the showhttps://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Contact Us on Our Socials:FacebookInstagramA production of WordLeaf Media

Rolling Shadowrun: Faces, Riggers, and Remote Pajamas
Send us Fan MailBack to the Future (Kind of): Shadowrun’s Talkers and Techies Arcadia takes the GM seat this round while Tori joins remotely—because who doesn’t like podcasting in pajamas? This episode dives into Shadowrun Fifth Edition, focusing on two key classes.Tori wins initiative but defers, giving Malcolm the floor to talk about his favorite class: the Face. The Face is the talker of the bunch—the one who gets the jobs, knows a guy who knows a guy, and manipulates situations to make things happen. They’re the hustlers who weren’t handed opportunities on a silver platter. This charisma-based class can also face the harshest negative modifiers, but Malcolm loves the roleplay opportunities it offers. After the break, Tori covers the Rigger class. Riggers are the tech wizards of Shadowrun, controlling drones, vehicles, and all the gadgets. Need a quick getaway, security, or offensive support? The Riggers have you covered. They’re the Swiss Army knife of Shadowrun classes, combining versatility with a love of toys.Another game we love diving into!Music Credit: Rise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi — licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0https://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngSupport the showhttps://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Contact Us on Our Socials:FacebookInstagramA production of WordLeaf Media

Vampire: The Masquerade-A Beginner’s Guide to Clans: Exploring Banu Hakim & Malkavian
Send us Fan MailLaw vs. Madness in Vampire: The MasqueradeMalcolm takes the GM seat today while Tori joins us remotely! The ladies dive into two clans in Vampire: The Masquerade (VTM).Arcadia kicks things off with the Banu Hakim. This lesser-known clan wasn’t originally part of the Camarilla and tends to be quite isolated. They have their own history, caste system, and organization, and the Masquerade is less critical to them than it is for other clans. Known as a clan of laws and judges, the Banu Hakim have gained both infamy and some prejudice from the Western world. Arcadia was drawn to this clan by the sheer depth of their lore. After the break, Tori covers Clan Malkavian, one of the original 13 clans. Often joked about because of their ties to madness, Malkavians turn mental illness into both a strength and a weakness. They are also a clan of seers and those whose powers don’t fit neatly into other clans. Every member is chosen with a specific purpose by their sire, who may also abandon them soon after the embrace. Malkavians make clever use of the Cobweb, a built-in network to reach clanmates, even if it operates in unpredictable ways.If you couldn’t tell, we really love this TTRPG!Music Credit: Rise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi — licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0https://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngSupport the showhttps://licensebuttons.net/l/by-nc/4.0/88x31.pngRise (Epic, Inspirational, Cinematic) by Artur Aravidi is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Contact Us on Our Socials:FacebookInstagramA production of WordLeaf Media
