So, I wanted to take this opportunity to share a drawing I made of the moon. I've been following NASA's Artemis II lunar mission closely, a mission that has taken humans back to the moon after more than 50 years. Now we've been able to see clearer photos of the far side of the moon, as well as a better view of our planet. I made this drawing based on the images that show the moon's colors, and it's simply beautiful. I hope you like it. Por eso, en esta oportunidad quiero aprovechar este breve momento para compartir con ustedes un dibujo que hice de la luna, he estado muy pendiente de la misión lunar Artemis II de la NASA, una misión que ha llevado al hombre a la luna luego de más de 50 años, ahora hemos podido apreciar fotos más nítidas del lado oculto de la luna así como una mejor vista de nuestro planeta. He realizado este dibujo basándome en las imágenes que muestran los colores se la luna y es sencillamente hermoso, espero que les guste. PROCESS This drawing was truly special. If there was one where black would make a good background, it would be for the moon. So I drew a circle and started painting from one of its edges. As you can see, I painted irregularly to accurately depict the moon's cratered surface. Right from the start, you can see it as if the moon were rising; it was amazing while I was drawing it. Este dibujo si que fue especial, si había uno donde el color negro sería un buen fondo, sería para dibujar la luna. Así que hago un círculo y comienzo a pintar desde uno de sus bordes, como pueden observar, voy pintando de manera irregular para poder hacer bien la superficie llena de cráteres que posee la luna. Aquí solamente al comenzar se puede ver como si la luna estuviera saliendo, fue algo asombroso mientras lo dibujaba. Next, I paint the lower part, specifically where the large crater is located. It's so big that the distance it covers upon impact is immense. At this point, if I left the drawing here, it would look great, thanks to the effect the black cardstock helps to create with the white charcoal pencil. Seguidamente voy pintando por la parte inferior, específicamente donde está ubicado el gran crater, es tan grande que las distancia que cubre en su impacto son inmensas. Then I work my way up the moon until I can paint most of the upper side; here you could say the moon is almost full. You can see that depending on the pressure I apply with the paint on the paper, the effect is different. That's how I do it, leaving space so the moon's craters are visible. Pueden observar que dependiendo de la presión que haga con el color sobre la hoja el efecto es diferente, así es como voy haciendo y dejando el espacio para que se vean los cráteres de la luna. Now, in the next step, I begin adding contrast to the colors. New NASA photos have revealed that the lunar surface contains certain minerals that give it the beautiful tones seen in the photographs. So, following that color scheme, I first apply turquoise blue to certain areas of the drawing. Ahora en el siguiente paso comienzo agregar contraste en los colores, en las nuevas fotos de la NASA se ha determinado que a través de los colores visibles la superficie lunar tiene ciertos minerales que le dan esos tonos tan hermosos que se pueden apreciar en las fotografías. Así que siguiendo esa tonalidad voy aplicando en primer lugar el color azul turquesa en ciertas regiones del dibujo. After adding the blue tones, I begin adding shades of orange, brown, and ochre. With this combination, I try to get closer to the tone seen in the Lanasa photographs. Finally, I retouch all the white areas, and that's the finished product. It's amazing what science has achieved, especially when used for good, and it's ironic that while one part of humanity progresses, the vast majority wastes time on wars and death. This drawing made me reflect on all the things that human beings can achieve. Someone imagined the journey to the moon, and now it's a reality again. I hope someone imagines true peace so that we can all build it together. However, there is always something more ahead, a reward for those who persevere to the end. This is how I interpret the figure of Jesus in his final moments, which is why I created this portrait where he is wearing the crown of thorns, a symbol of shame and pain. I hope you like the result. I began the sketch from the nose as my starting point and from there I added the rest of the details until I had it complete. I know there's no exact record about Jesus; many say he was an invention of the church, others say his story was manipulated. Whether that's true or not, what is certain is that he changed lives with just one phrase: Love your neighbor as yourself. He took his ideas to their ultimate consequences, and I think we should reflect on the simplicity of his message. It costs nothing to be empathetic with those around us; our world would be a better place. I've taken advantage of this time to return to painting some larger acrylic paintings, in a portrait style. Here, I used an MDF board which I painted white before sketching a female face to paint. I'll briefly show you the process I used. Yo he aprovechado para volver a hacer pinturas acrílicas un poco más grandes, estilo retratos. Aquí he utilizado una madera MDF la cual pinté de blanco para luego hacer el boceto de un rostro femenino el cual pintar. Aquí les voy a presentar de forma breve el proceso de como lo hice. PROCESS Those who have followed my previous work know that I've been making miniature portraits for some time now. They're easier to create, although you need more patience when it comes to the details. So now, working on something a bit larger, I'll put my skills to the test again, this time with a portrait of a woman's face. After painting the MDF board white, I use a pencil to sketch the entire shape of the face, including her hair. I began painting the center of the face, using a mix of colors for each area, especially for darker areas and those where the light reflection was a bit stronger. Next, I worked on the eyes and their pronounced expression line, since the character is looking up and to the left. According to body language experts, this way of looking to the side means we are imagining something. Then I added the first base colors for the hair, something similar to the skin tone, from which I will continue adding more light and dark tones. Seguidamente fue haciendo también los ojos y su marcada línea de expresión, ya que se encuentra mirando hacia arriba y a la izquierda, segun los estudiosos del lenguaje corporal, esta manera de mirar hacia un lado significa que estamos imaginando algo. Así luego voy agregando las primeras bases para el cabello, algo parecido al tono piel, a partir del cual seguiré agregando más tonos claros y también oscuros. As I mentioned before, I start adding more tones to the hair, to make it a sort of blonde shade, but one that's obviously influenced by the environment. Next, I add some of the clothing she's wearing: a gray vest over a black flannel shirt. Como había dicho anteriormente, comienzo a agregar más tonos para el cabello, para hacerlo de alguna manera un tono rubio pero que obviamente esté influenciado por el ambiente donde está. I don't particularly enjoy doing realistic portraits, but I do like them to capture the essence of the person. I like to express my own style, and I believe that every painter has their own way of feeling comfortable with what they do. There are other techniques I'd like to explore, and I hope I can learn them, like painting with a palette knife, which I've found very ingenious for creating textures, and I know it would look fantastic on faces. Luego de que haya secado muy bien, con un lápiz de punta muy clara lo que hago es hacer el boceto del rostro poco a poco y parte por parte, asegurándome de hacer cada línea de expresión lo más fiel posible. For this drawing, I chose the rapper and film actor Ice Cube, a West Coast rap legend who has left his mark on Hip Hop culture. In his early days, he was part of the supergroup N.W.A. along with Dr. Dre and other stars. I created this portrait using the doodling technique, which consists of making loose lines without lifting the pencil for too long. I first made a sketch with a charcoal pencil and then used an ink pen. The paper wasn't anything special; I simply took a receipt I found in good condition and used it as the background. Para hablarles acerca de este dibujo, he escogido al cantante de rap y actor de cine Ice Cube, una leyenda del rap de la costa Oeste de E.E.U.U que ha dejado una huella en la cultura Hip Hop, en sus inicios formó parte junto a Doctor Dre y otras estrellas del súper grupo N.W.A. He realizado este retrato utilizando la técnica de los garabatos, el cual consiste en hacer lineas sueltas sin soltar el lápiz por mucho tiempo, hice un boceto primero con un lápiz de carbón y después utilicé un bolígrafo de tinta. El papel para hacerlo no fue la gran cosa, simplemente tomé un recibo de compra que me encontré en buen estado y lo utilicé para que fuera el fondo. Aquí les comento de forma breve como lo hice y añado también un video corto el cual podrán disfrutar y apreciar como es la técnica, comencemos! PROCESS Although I find it fun to use these receipt papers, it's not so easy. Once I made the first scribbled strokes, I placed them in the center of the face; this will be my starting point for the nose and eyes. After that, I do some initial tests with the pen, so I can see how the drawing will turn out. Here, you can choose whether the scribbles are large or small, and you can also add shading with the ink. By not pressing too hard with the pen tip, the ink flows less, resulting in thinner lines. Una vez que hice los primeros trazos con garabatos, los hice en el centro del rostro, será mi punto de partida como nariz y los ojos, una vez hecho lo que hago es hacer las primeras pruebas con el bolígrafo, así voy viendo de que forma me va a salir el dibujo. Aquí uno puede elegir si los garabatos se puedne hacer grandes o simplemente pequeños, también se puede sombrear con la tinta, sin afincar mucho la punta del bolígrafo la tinta sale poco por lo que las líneas quedan más delgadas. Luego fui cubriendo los bordes del rostro simplemente con lápiz, le fui dando una primera forma, sin embargo la forma final, la que voy arreglando con los trazos del bolígrafo, lo voy haciendo más exacto, claro, sin buscar el realismo, pero si conservando las proporciones del rostro para que no se vea deforme. Next, using the pen, I draw the upper part of the face. Ices Cube's expression is always one of being annoyed, even when he isn't, but his brow is always furrowed, so I do this detail to the letter, with a lot of shadow and ink so that it is very well defined. Seguidamente con el bolígrafo voy haciendo la parte superior del rostro, la experesión de Ices Cube es de siempre estar molesto, aunque no lo esté, pero su ceño siempre esta fruncido así que este detalle lo hago al pie de la letra, con mucha sombra y tinta para que quede muy bien marcado. Then I added details like the beard and lips. This is where the strokes became more concentrated. As I mentioned earlier about pressing the pen tip, I pressed harder here to create the entire beard area. I also pressed harder at the top to create the shading of the hair and the cap, since Ice Cube wears a cap. The final part involved more lines to create the other side of the cap, and that's how it was finished. Luego fui haciendo detalles como la barba y los labios, aquí fue la parte donde los trazos se concentraron más, así como hablaba al principio de presionar la punta del bolígrafo, aquí lo hice con más fuerza para hacer toda la zona de la barba. Así también en la parte superior para hacer la parte de la sombra del cabello y de la gorra, ya que Ice Cube lleva una gorra, y la última parte fueron líneas en mejor cantidad para hacer la otra parte de la gorra, y así quedó finalizado. FINAL WORK What do you think of the result? When you zoom in with the phone camera, the strokes are very clear. As I mentioned before, I really enjoy this technique because it helps me maintain hand mobility in any direction, and it's useful when I paint with a brush or colored pencils.
