    17. The BIGGEST Factor in Mitigating Stress in our Body: Why balancing blood sugar is important for everyone and exactly how to do it!

This season is all about listening to our bodies and today, Faith and Christa talk about the importance of blood sugar for EVERYONE, not just people with diagnosed issues. Our blood sugar is central to so many aspects of our health. When our blood sugar is off, we feel lethargic and exhausted or experience cravings and mood swings. If you get tired after you eat or experience that afternoon slump, if you crave sugar or caffeine, wake up in the middle of the night with sweats, have hormonal imbalances, suffer from depression or anxiety, or struggles with your weight, balancing your blood sugar is a key player in addressing all of it. In Part 1 of this 2-part episode, Christa gets nerdy and dives into the science behind blood sugar and breaks it down in a super easy-to-understand way and gives practical tips to balancing blood sugar.A HUGE thank you to a pioneer in this space, Jessie Inchauspé, known as Glucose Goddess on Instagram. Her work and research has been instrumental in making this information accessible. You can find her work at glucosegoddess.com. 16. Reviewing "The Body Keeps the Score"

"The Body Keeps the Score" by Bessel van der Kolk sparked worldwide conversations about the reality of trauma in our everyday lives. It opened our eyes to the deep connection between our brains and bodies and gave us an understanding of just how much of a role our bodies play in stress regulation. As we dive into the idea of "listening to our bodies" to navigate stress in our roles as social service providers, we couldn't overlook this key giant in the literature around trauma in our bodies.

    14. Different types of rest + herbal infusion taste tests!

In our last episode of Season 1, we recorded in person to do a taste test of three herbal infusions that each help support the body through stress. As we sipped our tea, we talked through the various kinds of rest and the different ways to practice those kinds of rest. We laughed, told stories, and dropped some clues as to our focus for next season! Thank you so much for embarking on this journey with us! We can't wait to come back to continue to support you as you support others!

    13. Leveraging nutrition for stress support

We experience all of life - the physical, mental, and emotional - in and through our bodies. Our relationship to food and approach to nourishment play a massive role in how we feel and the quality of our life experience. In this episode, we dive into how nutrition impacts our mental health, what food is actually doing in our body after we eat it, and what foods you can incorporate today to begin supporting your body through stress. Christa shares her story with chronic illness, nutrition, and disordered eating and what she learned in each step of her journey. We all eat every day and the choices we make can serve to support us or add to our dis-ease. We hope this episode gives you some ideas to start making choices from a place of love that gives you the support you need to thrive.

    12. Can stress actually be a good thing?

What if there's more to your stress than you think? We're all about navigating stress on this podcast. Part of navigating stress is embracing the purpose it's serving and how it may actually be supporting our healing and growth. In this episode, we talk about stress as a messenger, how to understand what your stress is telling you, and how you can use that information to move through your situations. This conversation will help you reframe your stress as something to honor and leverage for your benefit instead of something to conquer and overcome. 11. Advocating with lived experience with Educator, Adoptee, and former Foster Youth Tina Bauer

Serving in a high-trauma space is challenging, but what if you have lived through that experience yourself? When people who have been through trauma begin to work as advocates or leaders in that space, it adds additional complexity to the dynamic that needs to be honored, understood, and addressed. In today's episode, we sit down with Tina Bauer, an adoptee and former foster youth who now advocates for youth in care. We talk through the good, the bad, and the messy of being a leader with lived experience and how organizations and managers can best support survivors as they share their stories or work on their teams. Tina not only works for a non-profit that helps youth in care find homes, she also uses her social media to share honest, real, and often hard truths that adults need to hear to better serve child welfare-involved youth. If you have lived experience or you work with those who do, this is an episode you don't want to miss. 9. What we learned from burnout among social workers during CViD with Dr. Jillian Landers

2020 was a wild time for the field of social work. Social workers in various settings were pivoting their operations and practices to be able to keep serving their clients safely. The increasing demand and fast changes put a lot of strain on social workers and the burnout was REAL. Wouldn't be amazing if someone had been looking at the conditions under which social workers were operating, seeing where the overwhelm was stemming from, and noting the supportive practices that helped to contribute to resilience and longevity. Thankfully, that's exactly what Dr. Jillian Landers did for her dissertation. In this episode, which is really a reunion of friends, Dr. Landers unpacked her findings and the lessons they hold for the field of social work moving forward. Dr. Landers work helps us know what practices and supportive systems and practices will BEST keep our social workers healthy and thriving in their roles. You won't want to miss this episode! 8. Not your Average New Years Resolutions: a refreshing and HOPE-filled approach to our annual goal-setting fiasco

You know the drill. By the time December 29 rolls around, most of us are stuffed to the brim with Christmas cookies and a corresponding plate of self-loathing. We're ready to turn a corner with LOTS of ideas for how we can improve. But we all know the story. A few months (weeks? days?) go by and we're right back where we were. We're missing something. I'll give you a hint - IDENTITY. In this episode, we unpack a fresh approach to New Year's goals that aligns us with who we are and what we value! This approach takes the pressure OFF of the outcomes and center our focus on who we're being. The result? More confidence. Less self-loathing. And more actually meeting our goals! You won't want to miss this episode. We get REAL about our own failed goal-setting. There are a lot of laughs mingled with our painfully honest conversation. Then Faith deals out the New Year's practice she uses and shares with her clients and why it's SO MUCH BETTER than what we usually do every January. Grab your friends and listen in! 5. The one practice you MUST use to find balance and live in alignment with your values

Have you heard the phrase, "Saying yes to one thing is saying no to something else"? We all have to make choices if we're going to live our fullest AND most peaceful lives. In this episode, we talk about everyone's favorite word: boundaries! 3. Unpacking Polyvagal Theory and how you can cultivate felt safety in your body

In this episode, we continue exploring the stress response by unpacking the "polyvagal theory." We talk through the modes of our nervous system: rest and digest, fight or flight, and fawn/freeze. We talk through what's happening on a physiological level, what it feels like to be in these modes, where they might show up in our lives and how our response in one moment have implications far beyond. We then talk through how, with that understanding, we can learn to navigate those moments to stay more aware and conscious of our response so that our lives aren't run in "survival mode."

  17. 3

    2. Survival Mode in Social Services: How our stress response impacts our whole lives

In this episode, we dive into our stress response and how living in "survival mode" shows up in our work in social service. Our brains and bodies have this amazing process that takes over in the face of a threat. But that process doesn't just impact that moment - it carries over into how we see the world, and ourselves in it, as we move forward. Understanding this process and learning to recognize it in ourselves is key to helping us navigate our roles in social services.

  18. 2

    1. What is trauma and do I have it? (Hint: you probably do!)

In our first episode, we dive into how our brains work, what trauma is and how it shows up in our work and personal lives. We talk about the impact of social service roles in us as providers and what we can all do to help build resiliency while we work in high trauma spaces.
