Gender stereotype, societal cultures and gender inequality in the workplace

The purpose of this essay is to explain gender inequality in the workplace in the UK and South Korea. First, I offer a brief historical overview of the roots of gender inequality in the UK and South Korea. Second, drawing on the psychological theories of gender stereotypes and their consequences, I posit that pervasive and often unconscious gender stereotypes negatively affect women's work experiences and careers. Third, adopting a cultural lens, I posit that the societal cultures of gender egalitarianism and performance orientation play an important role in the shaping of gender inequality at the societal level. Comparing two contrasting cultures representing a Western and Eastern culture with unique histories, I demonstrate how gender stereotypes and inequality are manifested in the workplace.
