GBA #8: Dress codes in Golf: do they need a dressing down?
Just over a week ago, two of my fellow “new Dad” friends and I descended on our local Golf club, with a view to playing a few holes on the 18 hole course.Of my two Golf buddies, one of them was entirely new to Golf, the other has taken up the sport within recent years and got the bug for it during the pandemic.Despite the former having never having swung a club before in his life, he fully and confidently embraced the opportunity, with my intention being that we’d play a scramble format, so as to make it more fun and give him an enjoyable introduction to the game. However, when we arrived and approached the front desk to pay a green fee, we were met with an array of barriers to entry. First of all, he did not have his own set of clubs. With no rental sets available (and having been short on time to collect and bring his brother in law’s set, due to having had a chaotically busy work day), this was issue number 1. Secondly, he was not wearing, nor did he own any Golf shoes. Thirdly - and indeed what proved to be the proverbial cardinal sin - he was wearing Jeans. Credit to the Front Desk Assistant, she was neither obtuse, nor ostentatious about the matter, rather she was very matter of fact. The club’s dress code rules clearly state that denim cannot be worn on the golf course. All was not lost, however and indeed the story had a happy ending, as instead we headed across to the Pitch and Putt facility (which, in hindsight, was probably the ideal set-up for our resident beginner).Nonetheless, both during and after playing, the three of us debated the subject of dress codes and asked ourselves a number of questions, including:“How did such stringent dress codes get here in the first place?”“Why is Denim not allowed on the course?”“Should the criteria for dress codes be dependant on the profile and “aspirational” nature of the Golf club in question?”As we set about setting the world to rights, a thought occurred to me…Jack and I must take up our microphones and debate the subject, for our latest GBA episode. Here are just a few clips from our conversation (full video episode at the top of this post):Jeans are ok in the corporate world…why not in Golf? (37 seconds)Imposter syndrome in Golf doesn’t discriminate based on age! (36 seconds)Nevermind the Jeans, what about the pathways for beginner Golfers? GBA #7: How Rory McIlroy Golfed Himself Healthy
In the early hours of Monday morning UK time - when all but the most die-hard Golf fans were most likely tucked up in bed - I was faithfully glued to my television set, hoping and praying for Rory McIlroy that he would finally get over the line. Rory’s win at Augusta National transcends the game of Golf. It was a deeply inspiring and captivating human story about overcoming adversity and turning it into fuel for success. It was, quite frankly, the epitome of what it means to “Golf Yourself Healthy”.With this in mind, Jack and I had the great pleasure of evaluating Rory’s win at The Masters and reflecting on how we can all learn something from his milestone feat, whether you’re a Golfer or not. In addition to our Masters recap, we also took some time to reflect on my experience of playing in a golf day at The Belfry, in support of Lily Mae Foundation, a leading UK charity who are a leading provider of bereavement support for families who have lost a baby. GBA #6: What is the Healthiest Masters Champions Dinner ever served?
With the action about to get underway at Augusta for the 2025 edition of The Masters, Jack McAuliffe and I reflect on the all important question: what is the healthiest meal ever to have been served at the Champions Dinner?Forget all the hype about “is it going to be Rory Mcilroy’s year”, we really chew the fat on the important stuff, such as:* The time Haggis, Neaps and Tatties was on the menu* The most uninspiring dish ever served at The Masters Champions dinner, courtesy of Nick Faldo* Why Hideki Matsuyama is everyone’s favourite dinner companionBeyond Augusta, we also tease what’s to come in Season 4 of the GYH podcast, as well as dissecting some of the key themes heard at the 3rd International Congress on Golf and Healthy, and debating whether mass participation in Golf is happening at the expense of identifying and prioritising elite talent. S2 E12: Golf: a Therapy like no other
Danny Clark, founder of Florio Golf, understands that talking about mental health isn’t always easy—especially if you’re someone who tends to keep things to yourself. As a former competitive golfer who’s faced his own mental health challenges, Danny discovered that golf became more than just a scorecard; it turned into a way to unwind, reflect, and enjoy genuine conversations without the usual pressure.Florio Golf was born from a simple idea: to make mental health a regular part of the conversation in golf. The goal is to break the stigma by creating a space where golfers can talk openly, check in with each other, and feel supported, without turning every round into a therapy session. In final episode of Season 2 of the GYH podcast, Kris and Danny get into all things Golf, Mental Health and much more.Chapters00:00 Introduction 04:57 Danny's Journey in Golf: From Germany to the US06:58 Cultural Perspectives on Golf: Germany, US, and UK09:40 Evolving Mindset: From Competitive Golf to Enjoyment12:31 Balancing Golf and Content Creation: A Personal Challenge15:09 The Birth of Florio Golf: A New Mental Health Initiative17:13 Facing Mental Health Challenges: Danny's Story19:51 The Impact of Environment on Mental Health22:10 Breaking the Stigma: Opening Up About Mental Health23:24 Florio Golf: Creating a Supportive Community29:20 Golf as a Medium for Connection32:49 The Therapeutic Benefits of Golf35:45 Personal Growth Through Golf41:21 Navigating Competition and Mental Health42:57 The Joys and Challenges of Fatherhood48:10 Pursuing Passion Over Financial Security 📚Episode links and resourcesJoin the GYH CommunityGYH InstagramFlorio Golf Instagram This is a public episode. When 3 bereaved fathers come together, bonded by their shared experience of Baby Loss, amazing things can happen. When Golf is added to the mix, the possibilities are endless. On Friday 14 June 2024, Kris Lynch, Ben Seabrook and Mike Harris joined forces at Prince’s Golf Club, in Sandwich, Kent, to undertake an all day Golf challenge in support of Sands.Sands works to save babies' lives and ensure that anyone affected by pregnancy or baby loss gets the support and care they need, in a way that works for them, for as long as they need it.Through their fundraising efforts and thanks to the wonderfully kind donations of family, friends and followers, the boys raised over £1,800 for Sands. This podcast episode is a raw, emotional and vulnerable account of three Fathers’ grief. It also a humorous, self deprecating and often slapstick account of three average Golfers having spent 14 hours trying to whack a small white ball into a tiny hole, multiple times over until their bodies and minds scream “No More!!!”.Episode timestamps0:00 The Hook0:18 Episode introduction4:10 Call for Help to GYH Community - Follow and Subscribe 5:10 Reflections from the Day10:27 Prince’s Golf Club18:09 About Sands23:15 “Doing Life” after loss33:36 Shoutout to fellow Golf for Sands participants34:43 Fundraising for Sands36:00 The Good, The Bad and The Ugly44:55 GYH is Good for You49:04 A word to the Midwifery Heroes 53:02 Three Bereaved Dads and Their Feelings1:04:08 Reflections on Season 1 of GYH Podcast1:09:26 Golf is Good for You1:14:13 Looking ahead - Season 2 of GYH Podcast1:15:25 Listener shout out1:18:19 Call for Help to GYH Community - Follow and Subscribe ❓About the Show:At Golf Yourself Healthy, we believe that Golf is Good for you. S1 E9: Golf Makes You Smyle
When life gives you Lemons, make Lemonade. Or better still, Play Golf.Reflecting on his childhood in the UK, Rob Jansz has fond memories of playing Golf with his family and friends, having fun and not taking life, nor the game itself too seriously. Then Life happened. In the intervening years between going to University and then moving overseas to Barcelona, Spain to start a business in the Hospitality sector, Golf took a back seat in Rob’s life. He barely gave it a second thought. That remained the case, until in 2021, when Rob experienced burnout. He needed to step off the treadmill of life and tread a different path, to find his way again. The path he chose? The fairways of the Golf course.Since that fateful day in 2021 - which involved 36 holes of Golf and a deeply “profound experience” - Rob has been “reinventing” his relationship with Golf ever since. Not only is he loving being back out on the links again, he’s finding his people while doing so.Through the creation of Smyle Golf, Rob is establishing a community of Golfers who enjoy some of the finer things the game has to offer. Moreover, through Smyle and through the design, creation and distribution of Habits Scorecards, Rob is introducing Mindfulness practices to the game of Golf.As Rob explains, there’s much more to Golf than simply how many shots you took to get the ball in the hole. It’s equally important to keep track of what and how you’re feeling, whilst out on the course…Episode Timestamps0:00 The Hook0:57 Episode Introduction2:10 Call for Help - GYH Community3:47 Introducing today’s guest - Rob Jansz8:05 Teeing off9:20 Spirit of Your Game18:50 Introducing Smyle Golf31:00 Building a Golf Community42:20 Building Better Golf Habits53:25 Golf Yourself Nostalgic59:39 The Eagle Has Landed1:05:33 Cut It Out1:16:42 Episode wrap up❓About the Show:At Golf Yourself Healthy, we believe that Golf is Good for you. S1 E4: It's Your Honour
Golf is many things, to many people. To Craig McKee, Golf is a release.Following the passing of his daughter, Danielle, Craig has found solace in Golf. Out on the course, he has space to reflect and to remember Danielle, calling on her for inspiration as he stands on a tee box or lines up a shot. Moreover, Golf has presented him and his family with opportunities to raise important awareness around DiGeorge syndrome (22q11 deletion syndrome), a rare and relatively unknown genetic disorder which affected Danielle throughout her life.Through organising and running a charity Golf day at Elderslie Golf Club, the McKee family have raised vital funds in support of Max Appeal, a UK based charity whose mission is to try to ensure that every person with DiGeorge syndrome lives as independent and prosperous a life as possible. At GYH, it’s our honour and pleasure to be helping in some small way, to raise awareness for a condition, which, after Down Syndrome, is the second most common genetic condition and one that very few people seem to have ever heard of.Episode Key Moments0:00 Episode and Guest Introductions5:08 Address to a Lorne Sausage6:36 Getting to know Elderslie Golf Club7:42 Elderslie - the birthplace of William Wallace8:53 Spirit of your Game11:53 Honouring the life and memory of Danielle McKee20:59 Raising awareness of DiGeorge Syndrome (22q11 deletion syndrome)25:37 Embrace the Rough32:16 Cherish the Fairway33:49 Golf is Good for You36:15 Attracting new and lapsed Golfers38:17 The Eagle has Landed40:50 Thanking our Guest and episode wrap up41:10 “Danielle” by December❓About the Show:At Golf Yourself Healthy, we believe that Golf is Good for you.
