Hitting Your Mark with Benjamin White

The show is entitled, Hitting Your Mark. In theater, there are marks on the ground that us actors have to hit. You have to stand in the right spot to be seen in the right light. But I feel like it’s the same way in life. Whether it’s a dream we’re chasing, or a goal we’ve set, we all have marks that we want to hit. Those marks guide us to where we need to be. That’s what this show is all about. I’m sitting down with incredible creative people to talk about their journeys—what hitting their mark looks like.

The Best Strategy for Marketing Yourself as a Creative

My guest is multidisciplinary artist Kamryn Amada Gaskin, a USC grad school alum who studied digital media and has turned her knowledge of marketing and branding into a superpower for her creative and entrepreneurial work. We sat down to talk about something I personally wrestle with: MARKETING!Kamryn defines marketing simply as the "how." How a brand tells its story. And her take on being marketable? It comes down to being as honest and true to yourself as possible. This sounds like generic advice. But in a world of AI and viral chasing, authenticity is actually rare and that's exactly what makes it so powerful. Just look at Ryan Coogler! I even asked Kamryn for some personal coaching. After one of my annual premieres, what should I actually be doing? Her answer stuck with me: keep the story going. We came, we saw, we conquered and then we conversed. It's not about the moment, it's about the conversation that follows. Once the movie is over the work has just begun! We also got into why so many creatives struggle with marketing in the first place. Her answer? Imposter syndrome. Not believing we belong in the room, and setting low standards for ourselves. We started talking about marketing but ended up deep in a conversation about authenticity. That really became the thesis of the whole episode. If you take nothing else from this one, take that. Being authentically you is what people will resonate with most.If you're a creative looking to share your story with the world, this episode is for you.For the dreamers, BenConnect with Kamryn (https://www.instagram.com/olesoulkam/)Book A Call with us! How Comedy Saved His Life ft. Akela O'Neal

On this episode of Hitting Your Mark, I sat down with stand up comedian Akela O’Neal. What started as a conversation about comedy turned into something way deeper. His journey into stand up isn’t traditional at all. What really stuck with me was hearing how a near death experience changed everything for him. Coming out of that, he asked God a question we don’t always ask, “What would YOU  have me do?” From there, he went back to school and started doing stand up.For him, comedy isn’t just about being funny. It’s a space where he can be real and say the things most people hold in. At the same time, he’s navigating being a minister without feeling boxed in as a “Christian comic.”We also talked about what “hitting your mark” really means. Of course, he wants the world to know his name. But what matters most is what his four kids will say about him. If they remember him as a present father, then he’s hit his mark.Grab our merch! The Truth About Being An Independent Filmmaker ft. Malik Baker

In this episode of Hitting Your Mark, I sit down with LA’s very own Malik Baker. Malik talks about how filmmaking felt like something that chose him when he first picked up a camera. He shares what he learned during his time in film school and the challenge he faced that almost broke him.We get into the challenges of making short films, lessons learned, developing your style, and why promoting yourself matters just as much as the work itself. Malik shares that this is something a lot of filmmakers are missing today. Many focus only on creating, but learning how to put your work out there is a major key. We also talk about the importance of building real community because you can’t do it alone.Malik leaves filmmakers with one simple message: do it scared. That lines up with what I always say — today is the day. You don’t wait until you feel ready, you just do it. For the dreamers.BenBook A Call with us! Finding Your Voice Through Comedy ft. Jacques Chevelle | Hitting Your Mark with Benjamin White

This week’s conversation felt more like play than an interview — in the best way.I sat down with my friend Jacques — an actor and improviser who uses comedy as a way to connect with people. That’s always been his starting point. Now that he’s acting professionally, he says it just feels like getting paid to play. And honestly, that mindset is what’s carried him through the tougher parts of the journey. We talked about how his time doing theater prepared him for the fast-paced world of TV, starring in a Nickelodeon show - Side Hustle. He shared what he learned from that experience and how his training gave him the foundation to thrive in that environment. Now, with improv, he’s tapping into a different side of his creativity — one that’s helping him find his voice and become an even better actor. Stop Waiting: Create Your Own Opportunities | Hitting Your Mark with Benjamin White

Let’s be real—if you’re waiting for someone to give you a shot, you might be waiting forever. The truth is, some of the most successful people don’t sit around hoping for an opportunity. They create it for themselves. That’s exactly what I had to learn in my own journey as an actor and filmmaker. I realized that if I wanted to see my work on the big screen, I couldn’t just wait for someone to cast me in their movie—I had to make my own. That’s how I ended up creating People, a film I’m incredibly proud of, not just because of how it turned out but because of what it represented: me taking control of my own path. But I didn’t do it alone. In this episode of Hitting Your Mark, I’m talking about the power of building a team, setting real deadlines (not just letting ideas sit in your notes app), and committing to making things happen—no excuses. Because as much as we like to think we’ll "get to it eventually," the truth is, if you don’t put a date on it, it’ll never happen. So if you’ve been sitting on an idea, waiting for the perfect moment—this is your sign. What’s the thing you’ve been waiting to start?
