EP83 Umwelt: Why Your Home Doesn’t Feel Like You Yet

Have you ever walked into a space and felt instantly calm… while someone else feels completely unsettled? In this episode, I’m introducing you to a concept I’ve recently discovered called Umwelt, and I think it will completely reframe how we think about our homes.I came across the German word, Umwelt in my recent research, and it piqued my interest. I've come across so many different words over the years, in terms of interiors and design, from Danish Hygge to Swedish Legom, to Dutch gezelligheid, to Japanese Ikigai and Wabisabi - all these beautiful words come from all these beautiful different cultures, and what they all point to really, is the same concept of our homes being not just visual, they are emotional, sensory, and deeply personal spaces. The concept of Umwelt comes from a biologist called Jakob von Uexküll, who was fascinated by how different animals, like elephants, bats, dogs and even insects, each experience the world in their own unique way. And I think this is also so relevant when it comes to our homes, because our senses are experiencing our homes and the spaces around us, whether we are conscious of it or not.Umwelt is a German word with no direct English translation, but at its core, it describes something quite powerful, the unique way each of us experiences the world around us. We don’t experience our homes or our surroundings as they are. We experience them as we are.I think the concept of Umwelt connects so beautifully back to home, and back to these deeper conversations I'm starting to have about what home means to us and our sense of home and belonging, and how we experience what is around us.Come and join me inside this episode to explore this more, I chat about how your personality, your past, your sensory preferences, and even your daily habits shape how your home feels to you.Inside This EpisodeHow Umwelt shows up in real homesHidden factors shaping how we perceive our space (light, clutter, layout & more)How to design for your UmweltResources & MentionsEpisode 1: Common Renovation Regrets & ConcernsEpisode 2: What is a Successful Home Renovation?Episode 9: DreamingLoved This Episode? If you found this helpful, I’d be so grateful if you left a review on Apple, YouTube or Spotify, or even shared it with a friend who’s renovating, or just wants to create a better home.Send us Fan Mail*******************Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio. In this podcast, I share practical renovation advice, along with deeper insights into home and belonging. If you’d like more resources and support, head to:https://www.southplacestudio.com/freebiesIf you’re navigating your own renovation, my RenoVersity programme offers a structured, guided and thoughtful approach to renovating with clarity, confidence and intention https://www.southplacestudio.com/renoversityOr if you want to get social, you can find us here:Instagram: @southplacestudio Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/company/south-place-studioPinterest: https://www.pinterest.co.uk/southplacestudio

EP82 Guest Episode: Emma Forrest: How to Make a Home That Heals After Life Changes

In this episode, I sit down with the brilliant, Emma Forrest, in her gorgeous, cosy, feminine home. Emma, is a novelist, memoirist and filmmaker, and her work is known for its emotional precision and unflinching honesty, exploring love, identity, grief, and the ways our past shapes who we become. From her early days as a teenage columnist interviewing cultural icons in 90s London, to her deeply personal memoirs and films, Emma has built a body of work that feels both intimate and expansive. Following divorce and a major life shift from Los Angeles back to London, Emma reflects on starting again, and what it’s meant to create a home from scratch, here in her home town, London. In this episode, we explore what home really is, not just the physical space, but the emotional architecture behind it. We talk about our shared childhood experiences of being othered, and how our childhood homes, loss, and movement across countries shape our sense of belonging. Emma shares how living in what felt like the “wrong” house for her, a new build devoid of history and texture, deeply impacted her mental health, and why she feels most at ease in spaces that carry stories. A quiet testament to just how profoundly our surroundings shape us. We also talk about Emma’s deep connection to light and views, and why she will always choose a top-floor, for openness, safety and epic views. As someone who loves entertaining and designing my entire home for that purpose, it was very interesting chatting to Emma about the reasons and need for creating a home for cocooning - a reminder that your home doesn’t have to perform for anyone else, but can simply just function for you alone, and hold you and yours. Towards the end of the episode, Emma shares something quite extraordinary, a deeply personal experience of mentally revisiting her childhood home, moving through it room by room, drawer by drawer, a moment that reminds us that the right home never truly leaves us. Closure doesn’t always arrive when we expect it to, and that sometimes we need to return, even if only in memory. It leaves us with a simple truth, that a well-lived home, much like a well-lived life, is never perfect, it is layered, shaped by change, and sometimes chaos, and filled with traces of everything that came before. This is one of my favourite episodes so far, and I hope it will resonate deeply with anyone drawn to the emotional side of making a home. And the ways identity, belonging, and personal history shape the spaces we can create to make a home that help to heal us after life throws us a curveball. You can find Emma here:InstagramSubstackSend us Fan Mail*******************Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio.

EP81 Your Home Is Shaping Your Habits. Whether You Realise It Or Not.

What if your home was quietly shaping your habits… without you even realising? In this episode, I explore one of the most powerful ideas from Atomic Habits by James Clear, that our environment plays a huge role in the habits we build (or struggle to maintain). As renovators and homeowners, this is where things get really interesting.Because your home isn’t just a backdrop to your life, It’s an active participant in it.I’ll walk you through how small, intentional design choices can make good habits easier, reduce daily friction, and ultimately help you create a home that truly supports the way you want to live.Whether you want to exercise more, feel calmer, be more productive, or simply make everyday life flow better, this episode will help you start seeing your home in a  new way.Inside This EpisodeWhy your home environment has more impact on your habits than motivationHow design can either support or sabotage your daily routinesThe power of visual cues (and how to use them to your advantage)How to reduce friction in your home through better layout and flowSimple ways to design for focus, calm, and productivityHow to shape your home around the person you want to becomeWhat you see every day influences what you do every day and a well-designed home should make the right choices feel easy and natural. It’s not only about the big renovation, it’s about the small shifts too. Moving something or repurposing a a space. Small changes in your home can lead to big, lasting behaviour shifts. Making one habit at a time just that little bit easier.Resources & MentionsYou can download chapter 1 of James Clear’s #1 New York Times bestselling book Atomic Habits here: Atomic Habits by James ClearLoved This Episode?

EP80 How Our Home’s Layout Affects How We Feel

Layout is more than just where walls go,  it’s how your home feels to live in every day.In this episode, I’m talking about all the the subtle but powerful ways layout shapes our mood, stress levels, and how easily (or not) our lives flow through our homes.I chat about why bad circulation quietly causes daily frustration. How thresholds and transitions create calm and clarity. Why adding a pause point or two in your home design can encourage those small moments of stillness we all crave for.And one of my favourites - how to design your layout for better human connection.Because our homes just simply work better when we consider and plan for human needs, like connection, ease, flow, and how we want to feel when we open that front door after a really long day.Send us Fan Mail*******************Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio.

EP79 Guest Episode: Eva Sonaike: Exploring Heritage At Home

Some designers create beautiful things.Others create work that carries a story. And today’s guest is someone whose work does both.In this episode I talk Eva Sonaike, a London-based textile and interior designer whose work is instantly recognisable for its bold palettes, layered patterns, and joyful energy. But what makes Eva’s work so compelling isn’t just the colour — it’s the narrative behind it.Born in Germany to Nigerian parents, Eva’s work is brimming with colour, confidence, and a real sense of cultural pride. Her collections celebrate the richness of West African culture while translating it into contemporary interiors in a way that feels modern and elegant. In the conversation, Eva refers to The Yoruba culture she draws from, which is known for its rich visual language — bold colour combinations, rhythmic pattern, and textiles that carry meaning as well as beauty. In many ways, you can see that influence in Eva’s work: confident colour, layered prints, and designs that feel alive with story and symbolism. Before founding her own design brand, Eva worked as a fashion journalist. But finding a gap in the market for homeware that reflected her heritage when decorating her own home, she began with a small collection of cushions which quickly grew into a brand stocked by some of the most prestigious retailers. In this conversation, we talk about colour, about how heritage and identity shape the spaces we create, and about why our homes should tell the story of who we are. We also explore something I think is incredibly important; how design can help us create spaces that feel grounding, meaningful, and deeply personal in a world that often feels anything but.Eva brings such warmth and honesty to this conversation. I think you’re going to feel incredibly inspired by the way she sees the role of home in our lives. I interviewed Eva in her colourful and creative London studio, so take a peek on over on my YouTube channel to see some of her incredible work and grab some inspo on how to make your own home feel grounding, vibrant and expressive, hit that play button and we’ll see you inside. This is my conversation with Eva Sonaike. You can find more on Eva here:Website: evasonaike.comInstagram Send us Fan Mail*******************Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio.

EP78 Simple Things We Can Do At Home When The World Feels Overwhelming

I'm back and in this episode, I’m sharing a personal update on why the podcast returned a little later than planned… and where it’s heading next. Life, business, a new renovation project, RenoVersity updates, and even a book in the works have all been bubbling away behind the scenes. But more than that, I wanted to talk about something many of us are quietly carrying right now: the weight of the world. When global news cycles feel relentless, economic pressures build, when identity and belonging feel fragile, it can all feel very overwhelming. Inside I look at some small, simple things we can all do at home to gently reset and find a moment of sanctuary from the outside world, and these cold, dark months of the year. EP76 How To Choose The Right Window Dressings

In this episode, I cover one of the sometimes overlooked elements of your interior: window dressings. Most people leave curtains and blinds until the very end of a renovation, then panic-choose something “good enough” and wonder why the room still doesn’t feel quite right. In this episode I walk you through how to think about your windows like a designer: starting with the view outside, privacy, the light you want to invite in (or block out), and the mood you’re trying to create. There really is more than you might think to choosing the right window dressings. I’ll go through the curtains vs blinds vs shutters debate, to what on earth to do with radiators under windows, to why short curtains really get my goat. Plus lots more - I didn’t realise just how much I had to say about window dressings! If you’ve ever felt stuck on how to dress your windows, this one’s for you. So if you have a window that needs some power dressing, I’ll see you inside.Send us Fan Mail*******************Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio.

Does Renovating Add Value in 2025? | Home Renovation ROI ExplainedWondering if renovating your home is worth the investment in 2025? In this episode of How To Renovate, I break down down the financial pros and cons of renovating vs. moving, UK renovation trends, return on investment for loft conversions and extensions, and how to budget smartly. EP67 Design Details I Learned & Loved From Our Barcelona Apartment

Have you ever visited somewhere that influenced changed how you think about design? That’s kind of what happened during my five-week Barcelona getaway. Buzzing Barcelona captured my heart and reinforced my love of cities, just like London did. The medieval alleyways, sunny squares, arty influences, and modern buildings alongside  Gaudí’s dreamlike architecture collide to create a place that is historic, modern,  endlessly alive, and really quite special. Our family of four stayed in a gorgeously-designed little rental apartment accessed by stepping off a bustling Barcelona street, and  through one of those iconic, massive wooden doors. The apartment has so many lovely, clever design details that I will bring into projects that I thought I would share them all with you. So, in this weeks’ episode, I’m breaking down the design details I learned and loved for our Barcelona apartment.Join me inside for a little design masterclass this week, where I’m chatting about taking inspiration from your travels, blending old and new with intention, maintaining those character features, putting together timeless materials palettes, how to use textures well, and how adding just one or two quirks can bring a sense of fun and personality to your space… and a lot more!I'll see you inside!Send us Fan Mail*******************Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio.

EP66 The Importance Of Play When Designing Your Home

After a long, inspiring summer in Barcelona, I’m back—and filled with ideas sparked by the incredible, playful architecture of Gaudí. In this episode, we dive into the joy of designing with a sense of play and freedom. Gaudí's bold use of curves, colour, and nature-inspired forms reminded me just how powerful it can be to bend the rules and follow your imagination when it comes to designing our homes. We’ll explore breaking the “design rules”, exploring using all the layers of an interior, designing for feeling—not just aesthetics, and why it’s okay to go all in! I can’t wait to see you inside!Send us Fan Mail*******************Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio.

EP65 What Can I Do Now to Make Things Easier Later?

In this week's episode of How To Renovate, I’m kicking things off with a little personal update — I’m heading off to Barcelona for a month! It’s a working holiday (with some well-deserved tapas and sunshine), and while the podcast will be on pause, I’ll be soaking up fresh inspiration, sourcing new ideas, and lining up brilliant guests for when I’m back in September. But back to this episode: it’s a topic I’ve learned countless lessons on – and not always the easy way! We’re talking about what you can do now in your renovation to make your future life easier. Whether it’s clever storage planning, flexible floor layouts, hardwearing materials, or power points that actually end up where you need them to be — I’m sharing info and tips that will save the future you some stress, time, and money down the line.  The most successful renovations create homes that grow with you. This means designing flexible spaces that can adapt as children grow older, work situations change, or lifestyle needs evolve. I also go into choosing materials that age gracefully and timeless design elements that allow for personalisation, and allow your home to develop and flex alongside your needs.Your home should be more than just beautiful—it should actively support your lifestyle today while adapting to your needs tomorrow. I’ve seen too many people overlook these things in the rush of a project, only to regret it once the dust settles. So let’s get intentional. Let’s build homes that support the way we live — not just now, but five, ten, fifteen years into the future.Other Episodes Mentioned:EP24 Choosing FlooringSend us Fan Mail*******************Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio.

EP59 Breaking the Floorplan: Rethinking the Way You Live in Your Space

Today’s episode is a gentle but firm permission to break the floor plan! Stop letting outdated room labels or cookie-cutter layouts dictate how you live in your home. Or just a calm, sunlit corner to drink your morning coffee and take a breath.Renovating is not just about moving walls or chasing square footage. We want to create a better way of living and a better way to connect within our own homes. Simple connection points in a home mean so much. It really is so powerful when you take ownership of your space, and think about how you want to live and how your home can support that.In this episode we’ll dive into how to challenge your existing floor plan, think in flexible, lifestyle-driven zones, and why your home should support the way you want to live — not fight against it.Masterclass Resources Mentioned In This Episode:Space Planning & Layouthttps://www.southplacestudio.com/masterclasses/masterclass-space-planning-layoutHow To Draw Easy Scaled Floor Planshttps://www.southplacestudio.com/masterclasses/masterclass-how-to-draw-easy-scaled-floor-plansSend us Fan Mail*******************Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio.

Light isn't just about brightening a space, it fundamentally transforms how we feel in our homes. When you walk into a light-filled room, there's an immediate sense of warmth and energy that simply can't be replicated with artificial lighting. In this episode I share a personal experience of how dramatically different educational environments—one dark and oppressive, one flooded with natural light—shaped my understanding of how buildings affect our emotional state. When I think back to it, this early awareness really formed the foundation of my approach to using light as a tool in renovation. EP51 Why You Should Have Things In Your Home That Tell A Story

What makes a house truly feel like home? Beyond beautiful furniture and perfect paint colors lies something more profound – the personal stories woven into your living space. Taking inspiration from a recent client project where we've moved beyond renovation to thoughtfully selecting meaningful objects, this episode explores why surrounding yourself with items that tell your story creates a deeper connection to your space. Your identity is essentially a collection of stories, and bringing elements from your past, travels, and meaningful experiences into your home reflects who you truly are. These story-rich items serve multiple purposes. They're natural conversation starters, as I discovered when my husband displayed Andreas Gursky's swimming pool photographs that captivate every visitor. They trigger positive emotions daily, with research suggesting people who display family photos live happier lives. And in today's uncertain world, they remind us to treasure our safe havens and the memories they protect. The beauty of this approach? Creating a story-filled home doesn't require significant expense. From travel souvenirs to simple photo prints in nice frames, what matters is the meaning behind each piece. Your home becomes a visual autobiography, filled with reminders of special moments, cherished relationships, and personal values.Ready to transform your space with meaningful touches? EP50 Can Making A Home Help Heal Our Childhood Shame?

This is the 50th episode of How To Renovate. When I started the podcast, back in February 2024, the idea was to  focus on short informative episodes about the renovation process. And although I’ve mainly stuck to that, I’ve also found so much joy in interviewing some incredible people and exploring just how much our homes mean to us.Our homes are powerful, they can either support our needs, daily lives and our well-being, or they do not. Home is more than just four walls, it’s what happens inside. This episode was quite a difficult one for me. I decided to turn off the video and just reflect and talk freely as if I was having a coffee with a close friend, about what home means to me.  As many of our lovely listeners know by now, I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa during the apartheid era and this means that I have many complicated feelings of what home means, especially home as a country.  What our feelings of home are, how those feelings are formed during childhood, and the related shame that often comes with that, is a subject that has always fascinated me, and in this episode I explore my own. This week’s episode is deeply personal. I’ve opened up about something I’ve never fully shared before—the shame I carried growing up under apartheid in South Africa, and how that experience shaped my relationship with home. But, as adults, when we finally get to create our own spaces, we often don’t realise how much of our childhood we’re still carrying with us—and how making our own homes can help to heal that shame. For me, it’s been taking the feeling of not belonging that has roots that stretch far back, across continents and decades, and with quiet rebellion and intentional creation, turning that into what people who looked like me weren’t allowed to have, into the home I’ve built today. So join me inside to explore how home can be a space for reclaiming worth, safety, and identity. I speak about  ways we can begin to heal childhood shame through the way we design and care for our homes—by prioritising self-expression, comfort, security, and making space for connection and joy.Whether or not you’ve experienced trauma or displacement, I truly believe we all carry pieces of our past into the homes we create. If this resonates with you in any way, grab that coffee and hit play. Send us Fan Mail*******************Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio.

EP49 Unexpected Places To Find Renovation Inspiration

Renovation inspiration doesn’t always have to come from a screen. It doesn't have to come from Pinterest and Instagram and TV, useful as they may be sometimes! In this episode, I want to help you explore other places and ways to get that inspiration for your home.Seeing something on a screen and trying to copy it can look, well, copied. EP48 No Vanilla Renos Please!

What makes a home truly special? It's not the magnolia walls or the  generic fixtures that developers often choose to please everyone—and ends  up inspiring no one!Whether you're renovating to stay or planning to  sell later, the "vanilla renovation" approach robs your space of the very thing that makes a house feel like a home: personality.Join  me inside as I make the case against soulless renovations and share ways for creating spaces with character, that will still appeal to future buyers. We explore the balance between timeless  foundations and bold accents, examining how thoughtful material  selections can elevate  your home, but without risking resale value. Contrary to what seems to be the common developer mindset, homes with personality often command higher prices and attract more interested buyers. I chat about how you can add your own DNA into the design with confidence, but still maintain that balance, and how neutral doesn't have to mean magnolia or white. I also share my own adventures in painting an entire living room (ceiling included)  black!Hit play to break free from the developer mindset that results in forgettable  spaces.I’ll see you inside!Send us Fan Mail*******************Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio.

Ever catch yourself staring at your walls, feeling a bit… meh? Like your home has lost its spark, but you’re not quite sure why? That creeping sense of boredom doesn’t mean you need to start knocking down walls or scrolling Rightmove.Sometimes, all it takes is a few small shifts to completely change how your home feels. In this episode, I’m sharing six simple but impactful ways to fall back in love with your space. We’ll talk about the magic of shopping your own home (yes, rearranging your stuff can work wonders), the subtle power of swapping out things like cabinet handles and light fittings, and why a fresh furniture layout can make a room feel brand new. I’ll also dive into the importance of weaving in pieces that mean something—travel mementos, artwork, textiles—those little touches that bring warmth and personality back into your space.Inspired by Nigel Slater’s insights on how fragrance shapes memory and emotion, I also chat about how the small things, like filling your home with scent, can make a big difference. This episode is about rediscovering the joy in your home, with a few small shifts. What’s one easy change you could make today to fall back in love with your space?Send us Fan Mail*******************Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio.

    EP42 Beyond The Renovation

It’s the podcast’s first birthday! In this episode I wanted to talk about the meaning behind home renovations, because renovations are more than just bricks and mortar. I chat about the emotional connections we have to our spaces and how design can enhance our mental and physical well-being. We discuss how light and space can profoundly influence the atmosphere and our emotional health, particularly in darker climates like the UK, and how maximizing natural light can boost your mood. This episode also emphasises how design can promote well-being, focusing on creating spaces that are both functional today - and adaptable for tomorrow. Join me inside this special episode to explore all the above, and why we need to connect our home design to our personal identity and heritage.I’ll see you inside!Send us Fan Mail*******************Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio.

EP41 How to Declutter - Tips That Actually Work

She's outraged! I thought as I listened back to myself to edit this episode about de-cluttering 😂I realised how angry I sounded, and I did consider re-recording it, but then realised that I am actually angry about clutter. 🙈 I’m angry and annoyed about the stress and overwhelm it causes for my brain, and I really don’t like how clutter robs a space of calm. This episode is hugely based on an episode of the The Mel Robbins Podcast I listened to a while ago, and I thought the tips were really simple, and quite different to the usual advice you hear out there about sparking joy and rainbow organising, both of which I have never been entirely convinced of, I mean the dedication and time it must take to keep everything that way for any longer than a few days!In the episode, Mel Robbins interviews Dana K White, the founder of A Slob Comes Clean, about de-cluttering and organising, and Dana offers some really useful advice and practical tips on what to do if you’re struggling with clutter. In this episode I cover those tips, and add in a sprinkling of my own advice as well. I believe that embarking on a big home renovation, should definitely start with a big de-clutter.So here is it, the original (and a little angry) version of this weeks’ episode of How To Renovate - along with some other ramblings about where I keep my socks and nail varnishes. I do calm down a bit toward the middle of the episode. Promise.Send us Fan Mail*******************Hi, I’m Tash South — interior designer, renovation consultant, and founder of South Place Studio.
