Weather App Eval / Wind, Fronts, Pressure, Temps

Predominant wind, barometric pressure, cold fronts, wind speed, sunrise & sun set. We rely heavily on our weather apps during the hunting season to help us determine when and where we want to hunt, what layers we need to wear, and what to expect when we get set up. However, are all weather apps created equal? Should we simply trust the weather app that comes with our phone or simply go to the Weather Channel app? What forecasting model do those basic weather apps use? In today's episode, Jacob shares his top 3 weather apps that he examines closely when preparing for a simple hunt in the evening, or on a long extended trip out of state. Hunting Thermals & Hunting Dreams 2026

What is a "thermal hub"? What is a "thermal switch"? How do mature whitetail bucks travel differently in the morning vs. the afternoon? And, what implications do these phenomena have in the whitetail woods? On today's episode, Jacob is going to discuss the research that was recently revealed by Derrick Dixon of Whitetail Research and what he found as he observed mature whitetails for all of the 2024 hunting season. Additionally, Jacob will share his perspective on thermals and how he observes them holistically and on a case by case basis in the field. Mobile Hunting Gear: Wants VS. Needs

Hunting seasons are kicking off and while the heart of the whitetail season is still several weeks away, now is the time to take a hard look at your mobile whitetail gear setup and see if you need to make any last minute updates or changes. In today's episode, Jacob does a gear dump and talks about the mobile / saddle hunting gear he has for this upcoming season, and what he would like to get or "upgrade" to if he were to make changes. In addition to the saddle hunting gear he would like, he discusses gear upgrades that he made last year in order to become more efficient and more quiet in his set up and breakdown. Some of the manufacturers that Jacob discusses are: Tethrd, Hunt Arsenal, Latitude, First Lite, Eberlestock, and several others. Find Hunt Detail on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/hunt_detail/ or  YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@HuntDetail Save 20% on high protein, low sugar fuel for your hunt: https://www.rawrev.com/DETAIL Save 15% on your Re-Lyte electrolyte mix for your hunt:https://glnk.io/oq72y/hunt-detail Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The Hunting Knife to Rule Them All Pt. 2

Knife making is both an art and a science. In today's episode, Jacob continues to examine the dynamics of the steel composition of high end knives and the implications of that composition. There are a lot of steels that were created in the 1940's to 1960's (A2 Tool Steel, D2 Tool Steel) that were specific for the manufacturing industry and are still used in high end hunting knives today. But what do knife steels look like as they evolved in the early 2000's and what do knife steels look like now as they evolved in the 2020's. There are often tradeoffs between toughness, edge retention, and corrosion resistance. But is it possible to create a steel that has balance across these 3 knife steel dynamics. And, if so, what options are out there now for those looking for that balance of properties. The Hunting Knife To Rule Them All Pt. 1

If you haven't noticed, there is a new product segment emerging in the hunting knife space. Maybe it's been there all along...but it seems that there are more and more companies branching out and creating high end fixed blade hunting knives. The prices range from $200 to $400. And, while they look amazing, how do we know they are a worthy investment? Aside from the aesthetics, they all sort of seem the same? In today's episode, Jacob begins the deep dive into knife steel and some of the dynamics that come into play with regards to the type of steels that are available and how their composition of carbon, chromium, vanadium and other elements will dictate their toughness, edge retention, and corrosion resistance. Broadhead & Arrow Ballistics Study Pt. 2

In today's episode, Jacob will dive into part 2 of the study that was recently shared by James Yates with Western Hunter Magazine. James partnered with Easton, Precision Cut and Black Ovis, to answer some of the lingering questions that he had as it relates to arrow flight and the many variables that can effect that flight (mechanical broadheads, fixed blade broadheads, 3 fletched arrows, 4 fletched arrows, etc.). As we all get ready for the fall hunting season, this data could prove to be helpful in determining some of your set up decisions. In addition to this topic, Jacob shares an update on his own season prep. Broadhead & Arrow Ballistics Study Pt. 1

If you have ever wondered what arrow vane combination controls broadheads the best, how different are the aerodynamics between a fixed and mechanical broadhead, or does a 4mm arrow shaft really make a difference, then you should be excited to hear that prominent bowhunter, and author, James Yates (Western Bowhunter Magazine) has published the data that he independently gathered while working to answer these and many other questions that bowhunters wrestle with. In today's episode, Jacob is unpacking some of that data and research that James has put forth. In part 1 of this series, Jacob will share which of the 10 mechanical broadheads held groups closest to field points, and how fixed blade broadheads faired in holding groups at 60 yards, as well as other interesting data points. Single Bevel Broadhead Battle

The purpose of a single bevel blade on a broadhead is to twist as it penetrates as opposed to creating a flat cut plane like a double bevel blade does. As a result, you have a wound channel that doesn't close or re-seal easily, which hopefully translates into better blood trails and better recoveries. In today's episode, Jacob share the results of his evaluation of 2 different single bevel broadheads. Jacob shot the Iron Will 125 and the Toulou 125 through ballistic gel and each through a mature whitetail shoulder blade. He examined the twist rate of each broadhead and penetration. Out Of State Hunt Masterclass Pt. 4

In today's episode, Jacob closes out the section on creating a hunt plan. The hunt plan is developed from the hunt objective and sets the agenda for every day of the trip. Creating a detailed plan ensures that every day is a day is intentional and not reactive to whatever the experience may throw at you. Additionally, understanding the hunting regulations as it relates to use of electronics, use of scopes, proof of sex, CWD zones and game transport, specific seasons in specific zones, types of broadheads and types of ammunition allowed or prohibited, are all important considerations. Out Of State Hunt Masterclass Pt.3

The benefit of creating a specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound hunt objective is a better overall hunt plan and hunt systems. In today's episode, Jacob will get specific about how your hunt plan should be mapped out on both your hunt map app of choice, but also on a corresponding spreadsheet with plan A, B, C, D, etc. Doing so will help ensure that despite in the field setbacks (crowded trailheads, lack of sign, bad weather, road closures, etc,), you will be able to remain engaged and excited as there will be multiples of "theories" to work in the field as you move from one plan to the next. Hunting E-Bike Breakdown Part 2

Just because an ad shows a hunter with an e-bike, or is promoted by a hunter, doesn't mean that e-bike is going to be a good spend of your money or perform the way you want it to in a particular situation. In today's episode, Jacob continues the examination of the brands and models of the top hunting e-bikes. The parameters are mid-drive bikes with 1000w motors, 20Ah batteries, with an emphasis on multiple gear options and built in class adjustment modes (Class 1, Class 2, Class 3). The brands include Velowave, BikTrix, Rambo, BackCou, Quiet Cat, and Face Off. The bikes that are outlined here are at the top of the food chain. Hunting E-Bike Breakdown Part 1

There are likely hunting situations that you have been in either in state or out of state when an e-bike would have helped you make better use of your time. Maybe there was a well used trail, a fire road, or an old logging trail. And, an e-bike could get you away from some of the nearby hunting pressure. In today's episode, Jacob is going to begin the breakdown of the e-bike category. There is a lot of options and it can be a bit overwhelming. Not all e-bikes are the same and there are some important considerations to evaluate before you jump in. Hub drive vs. Mid drive, 750w motor vs. 1000w motor, newton meters of torque, weight of the frame, single speed vs. multi-speed, and is it a Class 1, 2, or 3? Lots to discern. Thanks for listening. Turkey season is around the corner and new product launches continue to drop as trade shows take place across the country. The National Wild Turkey Federation wrapped up their show in Nashville a few weeks ago, and about the same time, the Western Hunt Expo took place in Salt Lake City. On today's episode, Jacob shares some gear that caught his attention, some related to turkey season, and some simply just interesting. Specifically, the new Rival Turkey Vest from KUIU, the Slap Straps from Hunter Safety Systems, new turkey hunting related optics from Vortex and Hawke Optics, and the new Treeline Turkey Vest from FirstLite. 4 Mechanical Broadheads VS. Shoulder Blade

There are tradeoffs when shooting a fixed blade broadhead with slighter blood trails and lesser wound channels. But fixed blade broadheads are known for handling bone, remaining durable, and solid penetration. Can mechanical broadheads bust through a mature buck shoulder? And, if so, how do well do mechanical broadheads survive the "trauma" of hitting a shoulder? In today's episode, Jacob shares the results from his recent field test where he shot the 125 grain versions of the Beast broadhead, a Rage Hypodermic broadhead, a Sevr 2.0 broadhead, and a T2 broadhead into 4 separate mature buck shoulders. The results were interesting. Thanks for listening. Blueprint 2025: Part 2

Post season scouting can be a lot of fun. One gets all of the benefit of covering ground, without having to worry about bumping deer or leaving scent all over the woods. Now is the time to find rub lines and areas that have a high scrape count so that as the 2025 fall season approaches, planning access and set ups becomes a lot easier. In today episode, Jacob shares what he learned from a recent trek in another out of state public land piece with big hills and zero agriculture nearby. Additionally, Jacob will share his experience in using the new Trophy Scan application that was launched recently at the ATA. Does it work? If so, how well? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Blueprint 2025: Part 1

The best time to scout for fall of 2025 is now. The scrapes and rubs from this past rut are still visible. If the ground is wet from snow or rain, then trails that deer are using today will be easy to identify. And, any encounter with deer while scouting will reveal to you an area that they believe to be relatively safe. On today's episode, Jacob shares the insights he gained from his recent scouting trip to a big woods public land tract in a nearby state. Additionally, Jacob discusses some gear upgrades that you may want to consider as some retailers will clearance various product lines from last year.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Shot Show & Sitka: New Products

This is trade show season and this is the time of year when new products are launched in the outdoor gear space. Over the past few weeks, Jacob has covered off on the ATA show. On today's episode, Jacob highlights some of the new products that came out of Shot Show 2025 and the new boots that Sitka recently launched. Some of the brands that are discussed are: Outdoor Edge, Federal Ammunition, Traditions Muzzleloaders, Tricer Bipods & Tripods, SureFire, Ballista, Garmin, and Athlon.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. ATA Losers

On today's episode, Jacob shares his thoughts on the mobile hunting brands that he feels are missing the mark and a few that are effectively demonstrating the "Hedgehog Principle" and as a result are winning in the mobile hunting space. Every segment of business ebbs and flows based on the ever evolving interests of consumers. As some market segments grow, there are more and more new entrants into that market...and every company in that segment tends to have success. But what happens when there is a downturn in interest in potential new customers? What brands will remain and what brands will fade away? The mobile hunting market has been growing significantly over the past 5 to 6 years. But, when this segment plateaus or even takes a downturn, what brands can sustain success?  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. This includes products from Annihilator Broadheads, Toulou Broadheads, Out On A Limb, Xpedition Bows, Trophy Scan, Rage, Striver Gear and products from several other companies. In addition to these new products, Jacob shares his thoughts on the news bows that have come out from Mathews, Hoyt, Bowtech, Darton, Elite, Bear, Prime, PSE, and other companies. Are these new bows worth the continual investment? Jacob shares his thoughts on where he would recommend investing dollars when it comes to archery equipment.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Best of the ATA Part 1

In today's episode, Jacob shares part 1 of the highlights from the ATA. There were 2 companies that rose to the top with new offerings for the mobile hunter, and this episode is primarily focused on those two companies. For Jacob, it was clear that Hunt Arsenal and Tethrd made ATA a priority and chose to launch products at ATA that illustrated their commitment to the saddle hunting product category. For Hunt Arsenal, they introduced 2 new saddles, 2 new platforms, 2 new climbing sticks, and several new packs. For Tethrd, they introduced a frame pack for packing out meat, a unique and versatile hand saw, a new dual panel saddle, and a new bino harness line. Next week, Jacob will dive into other products that made waves at ATA.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Looking Ahead to the ATA

On today's episode, Jacob shares what he is looking forward to at the upcoming Archery Trade Association meeting in Indianapolis this week. Of course, part of the enjoyment of the ATA is seeing new products for 2025 and getting a sense of what hunting companies are prioritizing in this competitive market space. Jacob lists the exhibitors that he has identified as ones that he will visit, and makes note of the brands that aren't present this year. More than anything, Jacob feels it's just great to connect with those in the space that share our passion for the outdoors.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Whitetail Growth Goals for 2025

Happy New Year! Welcome to 2025. On today's episode, Jacob shares his growth goals for 2025. In many ways, the 2024 whitetail season was a solid success with two bucks hitting the ground. But, as the 2025 season approaches, Jacob wants to evolve several aspects of how he hunts and where he hunts in an effort to increase opportunities. This includes arrow set up, saddle set up, public ground expansion, and adding a new state, among other things.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Climbing Stick Eval. Part 2

On today's episode, Jacob shares an update on his season...both on public and private. And the value of spending time in the woods now as one can hunt this year's buck and next year's buck. Deer have been pressured and shot at...and any pockets you find now are going to be worth noting and well worth your time in the field. Also, Jacob continues his look at the climbing stick category. This week it is the "Lightweight" category...those sticks under 20 ounces per stick. Some of these sticks are unique and have innovative features...while some lack value and need an update. Take a listen as Jacob breaks down this category.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

    Climbing Stick Eval. Part 1

On today's episode, Jacob shares an update on his recent public land hunt and some buck encounters that he had as pressured deer behavior has now shifted to limited movement, security and food..with the potential for a secondary rut. Also, Jacob is taking a look at the climbing stick market for mobile hunters and evaluating the numerous options. There are 2 categories of climbing sticks. Those that are over 20 ounces per stick (cruiser weight), and those that are under 20 ounces per stick (light weight). In this episode, Jacob focuses on the climbing sticks that are over 20 ounces per stick. Some of these sticks have unique and innovative features, while other sticks lack value and need an update. Animal House

"Over? Did you say 'over'? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was is over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no! It ain't over now, 'cause when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Who's with me?" Of course, this is a line from the movie Animal House, where Bluto addresses the fraternity. In today's episode, Jacob shares his recent public land hunt and how he plans to pivot now that we are in December. While in many ways it feels like the party is over, there is opportunity and Jacob shares how he will approach this next phase of the deer season.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Mobile Whitetail Gear of the Year

In today's episode, Jacob goes through some of his top gear with his mobile whitetail setup. Updating and evolving his setup for quiet and efficient movement has been a process for a number of years as more and more options have become available for mobile hunters. This would include his saddle setup, climbing sticks, headlamp, boots, pack, pants, and other miscellaneous gear. Of course, if you are looking to make some upgrades, now is a good time as many outdoor companies are having Black Friday sales or will be having one soon.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Season Update: Buck Tag Filled - Public Land Bruiser

In today's episode, Jacob details how he broke down a piece of out of state public land, and in relatively short order, tagged a mature 11 pointer. As he outlines his hunt, he goes back to last fall when he felt he needed to add another state to his whitetail season. During the summer, Jacob spend time examining maps of public and private, and tried to identify a drainage system that would have several ridges dumping into it, as well as limited access points. He wanted to avoid any pre-season scouting and simply scout in season. As a result of his efforts, he found a piece that was relatively unpressured, found hot sign, and identified a ridge system that held several mature bucks.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Living In A Van Down By The River

As the great motivational speaker, Matt Foley, once said, "you're going to live on a steady diet of government cheese, and be living in a van down by the river". And if that sounds like you right now during the whitetail rut, then congratulations, you're doing the rut right. In today's episode, Jacob shares how he was able to gain new access to private hunting ground by doing a good deed and helping a stray dog find a new situation. Also, Jacob discusses the pressure that is on maintaining hunting as a way of life. And lastly, Jacob shares some of the gear he has in his "van" in order to live over the next week or so as he bounces from 2 different pieces of public in 2 different states.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Also, Jacob shares his recent failure to put an effective lethal arrow through a public land buck.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Public Land Rut & Saddle Platforms Pt. 2

On today's episode, Jacob shares his thoughts on hunting a new state with big woods public ground and how his recent hunt went. The rut was firing up on this piece of public and should be increasing every day of the next few weeks. Jacob also shares a bit about his recent interaction with anti-hunters and how they view "conservation". Lastly, Jacob shares part 2 of the saddle platform evaluation. This episode covers the XL size platforms (174 square inches to 200 square inches). Brands discussed during this episode include: Hunt Arsenal, Tethrd, Timber Ninja, Latitude, and Trophyline.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Season Update: Buck Tag Filled

On today's episode, Jacob provides an update on his hunts during last week's cold front, some encounters, some mistakes, and some opportunities. Jacob also shares his experience with a fired up buck while hunting on the ground during the 2 day muzzleloader weekend. This buck apparently thought Jacob was a competing buck and not only saw Jacob, but cut the distance in half to 60 yards as he postured and challenged Jacob. As a result, that buck got a bullet through his heart. Listen as Jacob shares his thoughts on shooting a buck that wasn't his target buck...but was the right buck to take.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Saddle Platform Breakdown Part 1.

In today's episode, Jacob provides a brief update on his season, and shares the end of an era as his number of hunting partners slowly dwindles down. And, Jacob breaks down his ranking of large hunting saddle platforms (132 to 153 square inches) based on a variety of parameters. This includes platforms from Tropyline, Tethrd, Cruzr, XOP, Lone Wolf Customer Gear, Wild Edge, Hawk, and Out On A Limb. Be sure to check out next weeks episode when Jacob breaksdown the x-large saddle platforms (174 to 200 square inches), and provides an update on his season.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Good Is The Enemy of Great

In today's episode, Jacob further breaks down another hunt on a hill country public land piece that has good buck and doe traffic. Why is it that deer like edge? And, where can you find edge that plays into your hunt goals and is often overlooked by other hunters? Jacob discusses the edge value of creek systems during early season and how he set up and had an encounter with a quality 4 year old buck recently. Unfortunately, details matter and that is why good is the enemy of great...failure to be meticulous with details usually translates into failure during bow season. Deer Season Hopes & Dreams

Every deer season is a season of opportunity, but how will it all play out? Filling tags as quickly as possible and hunting opportunistically is how Jacob is approaching this season. Hunting from a mobile saddle set up...bouncing from small private parcels to big woods public land across several states...and trying to find the area that is hot for that particular moment. It is an exciting time. Let's go!  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
