Igbo, Queer, and Unfiltered

Welcome to a podcast unlike any other, in which I bring my unique intersectional identity as a gay Igbo man from Nigeria to the forefront. This is a space where personal stories meet cultural insights, and where meaningful discussions about LGBTQIA+ issues, representation, and empowerment take centre stage. Each episode is a journey into the intricacies of being queer and African, examining themes of identity, perseverance, and visibility. As I amplify queer voices, spill some palm wine, slay stereotypes, and redefine what it means to be seen and celebrated, you can expect a blend of heartfelt storytelling, insightful discussions, and a generous dose of humour. Join me as we navigate the intersections of culture, sexuality, and community, one candid conversation at a time. This is not just a podcast, it is a celebration of diversity, a call for inclusion, and a reminder that every voice matters.

Why African Governments Target Queer People

As a gay African man, this is important to me. What's going on in Senegal and Uganda isn't random, it's not isolated, and it's not just about culture. It's a political strategy. When governments are pressured from problems such as economic hardship, unemployment, or corruption, moral panic can be a useful strategy. Fear takes over, laws get stricter, arrests happen, and queer people are made easy targets. This is because when a state decides who is criminal, it rarely stops at one group.Stay ConnectedWelcome to myownkindofrunway, a place for unapologetic conversations, fashion, and queer joy.Watch more videos:https://youtube.com/channel/UC9jWWJwF_KzrY14FR9DXO4Ahttps://youtube.com/@igboqueerandunfilteredpod?si=0GZV68iNaWT5BumS Visit my website:www.myownkindofrunway.comListen to my podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/5EjOLr2ilFBqhaXkoTK72aInstagram:https://instagram.com/myownkindofrunway?igshid=OGQ5ZDc2ODk2ZA== TikTok:https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMLDqhBft/Shop My Looks: https://www.shopLTK.com/explore/myownkindofrunwayhttps://www.shopLTK.com/explore/myownkindofrunwayhttps://shopmy.us/myownkindofrunwayhttps://linktr.ee/myownkindofrunwayJoin My Newsletter:https://unfiltered.myownkindofrunway.com/Let’s TalkWhich part of this spoke to you the most? Africans Are Preoccupied With The LGBTQIA+ Community

In spite of Africa's problems with poverty, crime, bad government, inflation, lack of safety, and institutions that don't work, queer people are still considered the biggest threat. This episode highlights the cultural obsession with policing queer lives.Stay ConnectedWelcome to myownkindofrunway, a place for unapologetic conversations, fashion, and queer joy.Watch more videos:https://youtube.com/channel/UC9jWWJwF_KzrY14FR9DXO4Ahttps://youtube.com/@igboqueerandunfilteredpod?si=0GZV68iNaWT5BumS Visit my website:www.myownkindofrunway.comListen to my podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/5EjOLr2ilFBqhaXkoTK72aInstagram:https://instagram.com/myownkindofrunway?igshid=OGQ5ZDc2ODk2ZA== TikTok:https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMLDqhBft/Shop My Looks: https://www.shopLTK.com/explore/myownkindofrunwayhttps://www.shopLTK.com/explore/myownkindofrunwayhttps://shopmy.us/myownkindofrunwayhttps://linktr.ee/myownkindofrunwayJoin My Newsletter:https://unfiltered.myownkindofrunway.com/Let’s TalkWhich part of this spoke to you the most? We Speak Fashion

Fashion was my first language before I had the words to defend myself as a gay Igbo man living in a culture that is hostile to gay people. The Myths of Gay S*x

People like to talk about gay sex, including pastors, politicians, and even the aunties. But the conversation isn't always honest and kind. We Are Not Born To Be Tolerated

This episode calls out the false comfort of tolerance. Saying things like "We don't hate you, just don't show it" isn't progress; it's control. It's the same old oppression, but it's called "politeness."Stay ConnectedWelcome to myownkindofrunway, a place for unapologetic conversations, fashion, and queer joy.Watch more videos:https://youtube.com/channel/UC9jWWJwF_KzrY14FR9DXO4Ahttps://youtube.com/@igboqueerandunfilteredpod?si=0GZV68iNaWT5BumS Visit my website:www.myownkindofrunway.comListen to my podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/5EjOLr2ilFBqhaXkoTK72aInstagram:https://instagram.com/myownkindofrunway?igshid=OGQ5ZDc2ODk2ZA== TikTok:https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMLDqhBft/Shop My Looks: https://www.shopLTK.com/explore/myownkindofrunwayhttps://www.shopLTK.com/explore/myownkindofrunwayhttps://shopmy.us/myownkindofrunwayhttps://linktr.ee/myownkindofrunwayJoin My Newsletter:https://unfiltered.myownkindofrunway.com/Let’s TalkWhich part of this spoke to you the most? Why Must Our Healing Always Be a Secret?

This episode is about the kind of healing that gay people in Nigeria have to do behind closed doors, in shame, and in silence. We're told to move on, forgive, and stop talking about it.

  30. 35

What Will Our Queer Legacy Be?

Making an impact, remembering, and standing up for your beliefs are all important aspects of legacy; it's not just about money, properties, or children.

  31. 34

    Desire Is Not a Sin

This one is for all queer individuals who have ever been told that their body is dirty, their touch is shameful, or their intimacy is immoral. It is also for those who understand that desire is not a sign of weakness, but rather a source of power.

  32. 33

Quit Policing The Lives Of LGBTQIA+ People

This is dedicated to all the queer people who have been told to keep quiet, not to bring shame to their families, and to shrink.

  33. 32

    God Was Used Against Me/Us

This episode is dedicated to those who have been told that their body is evidence of God's rejection that their love is a curse, and that their queerness is evidence of sin.

  34. 31

    Stop Arguing About LGBTQIA+ People

This episode is for queer Africans whose lives are talked about like theories instead of facts in schools, churches, on Twitter, and over family dinners.

  35. 30

    Blood, Silence, and Betrayal

While family is meant to be your first home, for many queer Africans, it is also the first place where they feel silenced, erased, or threatened. This episode is for all queer people who understand that sometimes the deepest wounds come from your biological family rather than strangers.

  36. 29

Stop Asking Us to Educate You

We're going to jump right into one of the most exhausting things that queer people have to deal with: being asked to explain ourselves all the time. This can come from homophobic uncles at family gatherings or random strangers.

  37. 28

    Respect Is Not Enough

This one's for all the queer Africans who were told to tone it down so they could fit in. This one is also for everyone who hid pictures of themselves, changed their voice, and didn't talk at family gatherings because they thought that would keep them safe. Respectability politics are control, not protection. They don't stop violence, rejection, or gossip; they just make it easier to erase you. They will still call you an abomination even if you follow their rules.

  38. 27

Is Queer Liberation a Threat to Africans?

This is meant for LGBTQIA+ Africans, who have been told that their existence is unimportant and that it comes from the West. It is for people who know what their rights are and won't give in any more. African governments, religious groups, and traditional gatekeepers don't dislike queer people because they think we are immoral; they dislike us because we can't be controlled, don't apologize, and can't be governed.

  39. 26

    Gay Igbo Joy

This one is for all the queer people who were told to be quiet, turn down their light, or wait for permission to shine. This is for people who have been through enough pain and finally chose joy as a way to fight back.

  40. 25

    The Closet Isn’t Culture

This episode is for all queer Africans and queer people of African descent who have been told that being silent equates to being respectful and that your presence, your love, and your life must be “private” to be accepted.Silence is not culture; it is control; it is shame masquerading as tradition; and it is erasing us.

  41. 24

    Not Respecting African Culture?

This episode is for all queer individuals who have been told that they are a disgrace to their lineage, as well as for those who are being silenced, mocked, or erased for simply existing. This is also intended for individuals who have heard that homosexuality is not African.

  42. 23

    Silence Is Violence

This is for all queer individuals who have been told that their pain is too loud, their truth is too inconvenient, or their presence is too much. It is also for those who have witnessed fake "allies" disappear when the hate begins to creep in. Your silence when queer people are being harassed, deleted, misrepresented, or taken down says a lot. You can't be a part of our culture, style, and brilliance and then shut up when we're being attacked. There is no shame in this conversation; it is about the truth. If it makes you feel uncomfortable, that's because it should.#YourSilenceIsViolence #QueerAndNigerian #GayAndUnbothered #AfroQueerVoices #LGBTQNigeria #CallOutTheSilence #VisibleAndVulnerable #UnapologeticallyQueer #NigerianAlliesWhereAreYou #PerformativeAllyship #SoftnessIsPower #BlackQueerResistance #CishetAccountability #SpeakUpOrStepBack #RadicalQueerHonesty #QueerLiberationNow #MyOwnKindOfRunway #ProtectYourPeace

  43. 22

    The Igbo Gays And Grief

We discuss the experience of losing the first home one has ever known, and the subsequent need to rebuild oneself from the ground up. This episode is not about pity; it is about presence. It is about demonstrating one's full presence in the face of loss, in a stylish, wounded, tender, and proud manner.#GriefAndQueerness #QueerAndUnbothered #GayIgboVoices #BlackQueerHealing #UnspokenFunerals#AfroQueerLegacy #BeautyAsResistance #ChosenFamilyHeals #QueerAndNigerian #VisibleAndVulnerable#SoftnessIsPower #StyleAndSurvival #QueerLiberation #MyMotherMyStyle #UnapologeticallyQueer#FashionAsLanguage #ReclaimGrief #QueerBirthright #TendernessIsRadical #MyOwnKindOfRunway

  44. 21

    Let's Take A break

This episode is for people who have felt bad about slowing down, who have been physically worn out by survival, and who are ready to see ease as a right instead of a reward. To rest is not to be lazy. Rest is what they never wanted us to have. It's about what it's like for queer people when everyone expects them to perform, prove, and produce just to be tolerated. We're told we need to be quiet to be safe, strong to be respected, and exceptional to be accepted. If you've ever been scared to stop, say no, or just be still, this episode is as well for you.#QueerAndUnbothered #RestIsReparations #SoftnessIsPower #LGBTQHealing #AfroQueerVoices #RadicalRest #UnapologeticallyQueer #RestAsResistance #QueerLiberation #ProtectYourPeace #BlackQueerJoy #ReclaimEase #QueerBirthright #MyOwnKindOfRunway #SlowDownToSurvive

    Family Isn’t Always Safe

This is about the experience queer people have when those who raised them, prayed for them, or told them they loved them also make them feel unsafe. We are taught that family is vital, even if it means we have to shrink to fit in. If you've ever had to make emotional exits, rethink what home means, or remember that love should never need you to be quiet, this episode is for you.#QueerAndUnfiltered #LGBTQIANigeria #AfroQueerVoices #ChosenFamily #QueerBoundaries #FamilyIsNotAlwaysSafe #UnapologeticallyQueer #ProtectYourPeace #BlackQueerHealing #ComingHomeToYourself #EmotionalSafety #SoftnessIsPower #SurvivalAndResistance #QueerLiberation #QueerHealing

    Queer, Tired & Still Employed

Being truly present, whether at work or in a creative setting, often means doing emotional work, choosing to be quiet, and always balancing the need to be safe and the need to be seen. This conversation is about survival, yes, but also about reclaiming joy, setting boundaries, and showing up with intention, even when it’s complicated. This episode is for all queer people who have had to hide their light at work, and for those who are learning how to shine anyway.#QueerAndUnfiltered #QueerAtWork #LGBTQIANigeria #AfroQueerVoices #WorkplaceVisibility #QueerSurvival #CodeSwitching #UnapologeticallyQueer #BlackQueerJoy #ProfessionalAndProud #QueerLabor #EmotionalLabor #SoftnessIsPower #QueerBoundaries #HealingAndThriving

  47. 18

We Are Doing Our Very Best

This episode explores what it's like to be a queer African in a world that always asks you to choose between visibility and safety. Being out comes with risks, both emotional and cultural, and sometimes physical. But hiding also comes with a cost. Queerness is still valid, no matter how you live. This is a reminder that pride can be loud and soft at the same time. Love Is For Us Too

    Softness = Survival

This episode is about how softness, rest, and care are radical acts for queer Nigerians, Africans, and members of the diaspora. Many of us were taught to be strong, quiet, and cautious just to survive. This is for anyone who wants to get rid of their shame, guilt, and fear about caring for themselves. It is a reminder that you deserve softness because you exist.#SoftnessIsSurvival #QueerAndUnfiltered #UnapologeticallyQueer #QueerSelfCare #AfroQueerVoices #HealingAndThriving #QueerRestAsResistance #EmotionalLabor #LGBTQIANigeria #ComingHomeToYourself #SelfCareIsPolitical #BlackQueerJoy #RadicalSoftness #QueerHealing

    Chosen Family

This episode is a love letter to the people who chose us and became our family when our biological family rejected us. When our biological families fail us, we find home in those who love us as we are without conditions, and we talk about what a chosen family means. This episode is for anyone who is building their own version of a family. It’s for queer Nigerians and Africans who are now writing new definitions of belonging that are rooted in care, loyalty, and joy. Love that is decided, not forced, is the most revolutionary form of resistance we have.#ChosenFamily #QueerAndUnfiltered #LGBTQIANigeria #QueerLove #AfroQueerVoices #QueerBelonging #UnapologeticallyQueer #QueerResistance #HealingAndThriving #ComingHomeToYourself #FamilyIsWhatYouMakeIt
