Ditang Quan Jiu Jitsu: Ground Fighting & the Hidden Roots of Kung Fu Grappling

In this premiere episode of Mantis Chronicles, we explore the often-overlooked world of Daitang Quan, a traditional Chinese ground fighting method embedded in the roots of praying mantis kung fu. Whether you're a martial artist or just curious about the deeper layers of kung fu, this episode breaks down the historical, technical, and philosophical aspects of ground combat in Chinese martial arts. We unpack how Daitang quan parallels systems like Brazilian jiu-jitsu, catch wrestling, and sambo, and why it faded from mainstream kung fu instruction. You'll hear reflections on learning from Sifu Raymond Fogg and peers who emphasized these lost techniques, and how modern influences like Hawaiian Kempo and MMA helped revive and reinterpret them. This episode highlights the importance of training for real-world scenarios—including how fighters end up on the ground unexpectedly—and why stand-up-only practitioners often find themselves unprepared. From rolling, sweeping, and kicking from the ground to integrating striking and grappling transitions, we dive deep into the "hidden ground game" of kung fu. Tune in and discover how traditional martial arts still have secrets waiting to be unlocked—if you're willing to go to the ground.

The What, Why, and How of the Iron Mantis Forms.

Kung fu forms are choreographed sequences of movements that resemble a dance, incorporating stances, footwork, hand techniques, and kicks. Found in many traditional martial arts styles, these forms serve as a structured way to practice and internalize fighting techniques. They enhance physical fitness, balance, coordination, and memory. In a beginner’s program, the first form typically focuses on stances, laying the foundation for more complex movements. As students progress, forms incorporate hand techniques, footwork, and advanced techniques. The Iron Mantis Martial Arts system features 10 fundamental forms, each emphasizing different aspects of martial skill, such as power, speed, stability, and fluidity. These include: For advanced students, the system expands to 18 empty-hand advance forms and 18 weapon forms, deepening mastery of techniques. Our foundational forms focus on various aspects of combat, including kicking, striking, grappling, and qigong exercises. These forms also improve flexibility, breath control, and overall conditioning, making them beneficial for martial artists and athletes alike. Forms are a vital part of martial arts training, helping practitioners refine coordination, reflexes, and strength while preserving the rich traditions of their respective styles.
