    Nine Lives

Nine Lives - 7 mai 2018, written about Sveta, who died May 3, 2018 I don't remember falling in love, I was just living my life But how could I resist those eyes, lying by my side Wake up every morning the doctor is in, yeah let's live another day You saw your own ghost at the top of the stairs, guess that was number eight What happened to those nine lives? Can’t we have a little more time I thought we'd have a little more time We knew that adventurous heart needed to roam When you were lost, we were worried to death, then we brought you home But now I can see you were trying to help, what the point we're all living for? A lot of things that mattered before don't matter any more What happened to those nine lives Can’t we have a little more time I thought we'd have some more time We waited till your heart stopped beating We never ever wanted to leave you

    Violent Garden

NOTES A song written around the time of the album Midnight Theatrics, but not really finished. This live version from practice is the only recording. New vocals were overdubbed in 2000, but lyrics are the same as the live recording in December 1993. LYRICS No reason No anger Nothing else like her She defies nature Grew in my shadow Want me to pick you Grow no more in a violent garden Learn no more of the evil that men do I’ll take good care of you & your children Cause we’d like to see more of you You know my day envies your night It’s just the way you feel out there in the moonlight Still, feelings will be just fine If you can help regather mine Now it’s time to make the tea For a lack of better words, I’ll let you speak to me Tell me what is happening to my world... And I’ll tell you the way I wanted it to be

  28. 42

    Clockwork

NOTES Probably the 2nd song written with the band, after Nostalgia. Justin Stahlman — vocals & lyrics Schon Thacker — guitar Shawn McKenna — Bass Rod Howard — guitar Justin Hansen — drums LYRICS I am dying of old age I have just seen the system It works like a clock running too fast I’m scared that I’ll run low and not care Fantasy... a secret of the young Mentally... my youth has just begun Time goes by... I'm left behind I am learning from these things I give knowledge to my wife She says, “this life you know it's a trial...” Well I don’t think I will pass it because I can’t live this way, a quick way to die So much energy, why’s it trapped inside? Oh dear, what could the matter be? Back and forth I can’t decide what I am going to do when I get my choices. Frightened, by the simplicity. Everyday the same thing every hour I want to change but my time is ending. I can’t deny the staccato All of the gears they will catch up and crush me Sent my prayers for some downtime I don’t think I can keep up

  29. 41

    Nostalgia

NOTES Lyrics written in Alaska on the Woodbine floating cannery operating out of Naknek, May 1993. LYRICS In the crisp October air, so long ago it seems The times I’d find to redefine just what affection means. You want to challenge me to take you back in time into the middle of a love scene? I think you'd find the price so high I’d never see you again. Letting go of me I dropped to mother’s arms again. Chastised, crescendo love and other fancy words of men. Confabulating dreams, but the story’s not for free. Sounds so good, I made you look right through reality. Bridge I remember, feeling just like this. In the fall, I remember, I remember this. In the fall, I remember, feeling just like this. In the fall, I remember, I remember this. Gone to Cripple Creek where gypsy voodoo was to me, oh... The hippest things, Vampire City, It’s a modern chivalry. You want to go away? Here there’s nothing left to see. Well, you’ll end up in New Orleans, leave everything to me.

    Discovery

NOTES Written in Manhattan, while driving around working as a Chinese food delivery guy, fall 1993. LYRICS What if I had never met you? Or if I had overlooked you? I’d lead such a different life, but I don’t even know you. Still... I celebrate... My discovery... I can see the land. Can you run with me? Keep your mind open? Someday I know I’ll know but right now I’m only hoping. Still... I celebrate... My discovery... I can hear the shore... It’s so close... Sometimes I sit and worry, did I get back the chance I had? Then there’s times, things I’ve done, I can’t believe you could trust me. Now I’m just waiting, forever waiting No sense in searching when I’ve faith my quest is over. Still... I celebrate... a pre-mature... discovery...

  31. 39

    Sympathy

NOTES Written when I was 19. LYRICS A time, for new reflection has come... once again See inside all the time, spent so wisely... You and I... Writing it all down, got a tale to tell Something going wrong, couldn’t even spell Words, you see, just can’t explain Cause there’s nothing really new for me to say What I’d say... are things that you know My well of dreams, seldom running low Words, you see, just can’t explain Cause there's nothing ever different for me to say What I’d say... is I don’t feel right here I ask no sympathy You, you still live in me Oh, I’m just hoping that you’re able to believe me. And I don’t want to hurt you, no But I’ve so many characters, oh no... Sometimes I hate them all. And one... the one you want... the one that wants you. And all the others, just a friendly enemy.

  32. 38

    No Man's Land

NOTES The slow part at the end was written at the time when Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box" had just come out. LYRICS In No Man’s Land there are many men But you, my man aren’t one of them When I was there, I thought of you The only way I could make it through. You always knew the way to be The wrong one, you would leave her be. In my homeland... Just a wasteland... Makes me wonder... Just how much I planned. Wished for snow, ‘cause I loved the light Loved the sky either black or white. Counting sheep and worrying One too many kept me counting Thinking long in the candlelight Morning always seemed to ruin the night... Chorus Even though, the plan it worked, the girl has gone beneath the brook Killed for time, while killing time, a greedy sense of what is mine Laughed with power, for a tear, slowly fear would reappear Riches once, a happy self, secretly lost all my wealth. Looking back, It’s all behind, what I lost, don’t need to find On my stage, 20 years, curtain closed to happy tears Took too long, writing back, the whole damn page was scribbled black You can guess, as well as me, just why it feels so hard to breathe.

  33. 37

    Midnight/Theatrics

NOTES The reference to "Angel Town" was about the movie of the same name that I watched in November 1991 in a hotel in Chicago with a special girl who I hoped would recognize the reference. LYRICS The coldest day of any summertime and I was there with you so positive, I don’t know... It must have been the magic cause I couldn’t go Still I knew before I left I’d be staying there forever Cause I want to live...You make me want to live... You make me want to be wild... Oh yeah... Mirror in the dark... I think I saw my soul... Reflection in the dark!? Made me want to stop. But I’m tired, so tired... tired of playing memory... I really want to take you to the madrigal Midnight, but only 9 chimes in the churchyard where the stars were raining down on us. Someday return to sub-city Someday our rainy anniversary But only the best for you - a bit of jazz Then return to Angel Town, oh the night it never ends... Cause I want to live... You make me want to live You make me want to be wild... Oh yeah... Mirror in your eyes... I think I saw my soul... A future in your life? Makes me drift away..... Well it’s time... for a fire... And it’s time... for lying down. It’s time... for anything... For anyone... to drift away... d’accord?

  34. 36

    Heirogliphic

NOTES At the time some guys in the band wanted to move in this Mr. Bungle-like direction, with time changes and more progressive rock, while others thought it was too crazy. LYRICS Fun here... there’s no fun here. So consistent, a fine tradition: hate the life now, love the life then. Lock him up, said it’s worse than death, well death begins what? A life... Forever... forever... join in! Left so much behind: More than most ever do... Let him prove the possibilities to you: He will die with everything written... Saying, “History, immortalize me!” He says, he says, he says, yeah, yeah... “Crazy is the man who cannot decide whether or not... He hesitates. He hesitates because he is so certain!” He says, he says, he says, yeah, yeah... “I don’t need an ego you know I don’t want my anger... No challenge fat lady, only pen and paper!” He says, he says, he says, yeah, yeah... “No one wants to know me said I’m awfully disappointing... My words are more important even I can be a hero!” He admits, oh he admits, he admits... “I always record the day... still so much is lost.” (Of a strange age, nineteen in a small town?) “Upstairs they’re fighting again. I could write novels... Downstairs, I live alone and write my life in this strange code.” “No no no no no no no no new secret’s mine and I’m never going to let it go.” “No normal words... for you. Only idols, statues, a tattoo. Hieroglyphic... I hope it lasts forever.” He knows, he knows, he knows, oh no... The hieroglyphic tells him yes the punishment is written... His ear is on his back because he listens when he’s beaten. He knows, he knows, he knows, oh no... Suicide is trendy... as is... to be outrageous... Struggle for a balance end up naked in the Valley. He knows, he knows, he knows, oh no... Wintertime is coming (always) so it’s time for reminiscing... Recycling the lyric and the weakness never showing. He admits, oh he admits, he admits... “I always record the day... still so much is lost.” He won’t reveal the code.

  35. 35

    Sadness

NOTES I used to drive back and forth between Hays and Manhattan with practice tapes of the band. I'd listen to the recordings and make up lyrics. This was written during that time. LYRICS Sadness... in affection... so far away... too long to wait... Sickness, demanding comfort, I know I’m shaking be it health or prelude to a kiss So young, oh she was so young, walking away, it’s been two years... Translation of her hesitation, sad decision, no one was preparing me for this Reno, begin the dream, city of greed, where what you want is what you need Chicago, city of memory, high point of life, forever is my memory of you Pictures, the mind remembers, no, man, it doesn’t fade away Amazing, to be a performer... making dreams come true, forever is my memory of you Look now... look at these two... my friends... what should I say? So lonely when they’re together, too scared to leave each other, I wonder what kind of promises were made Blue skies, close to Midnight, too far away, no way Silence, there’s no talking... not a whisper when you’re thinking maybe never us apart

    Sumeria

NOTES First demo version recorded Nov. 2, 2009. Many changes to music and lyrics up to the end of 2015. LYRICS All your people survived And your god is arrived Got of feeling it's time to declare Your kingdom will shine But Sumeria is mine It's too late revise all your prayers You want to ride for free Like you don't have a king You'd have it pure and sweet I'll have you down on your knees I'm eternally divine I'm the waters in the Rhine I'm the power that's holding up your crown Good and evil survive It's a matter of design If you need the end of time count it down You want to ride for free Like you don't have a king You'd have it pure and sweet I'll have you down on your knees I want to be your man I want to take you around the world and make up for what you lack I don't know what it takes to put me back Every genie knows that the bottle's much too small And the wise man knows but he just can't recall I want to be your man I want to take you around the world and make up for what you lack I don't know what it takes to put me back Every genie knows that the bottle's much too small And the wise man knows but he just can't recall As a prince you will rise But the power relies On responsible lies and despair You're king of the hill Every terror a thrill A human error and it's still musical chairs

  37. 33

    Boot Hill

NOTES Music 2011 Lyrics and re-recording of all guitars and bass 7 dec. 2015 LYRICS Stand in line, wait your turn At high noon, rest assured one day you're going to lose Whisky jar, up to your room One day those girls will come for you You're paranoid, talk to Freud Pick a fight you're never unemployed Stake your claim, the gold is mine Go to war bring the everloving wine Cause life's not as long as it seems They live... the life they redeem They die... dead men tell no tales Don't say... they ran out of thrills Bury them up on Boot Hill Pantomime, clear your mind Close your eyes, you're teaching colour to the blind You can't be nice, and we're deprived Of the air that went out when you arrived You broke your sword, it's raining fish You're a genie who couldn't grant a wish Ain't that shame, ain't got no pen I need write this down for wiser men Just write my will For another dollar another refill This glass was never quite empty Can't say... they ran out of thrills Bury them up on Boot Hill I don't have to stare down your gun To have a barrel of fun, good earthly fun How about all you men bow down on your knees 'Tis the lord's day, now make your way I don't have to be a righteous priest To believe I'll dine at the eternal feast A bad man searching for a bad girl's grace I'm a lonesome dove with a lust for lace Cause life's not as long as it seems They live... a life of extremes They die... dead men tell no tales Don't say... they ran out of thrills Bury them up on Bury them up on Bury them up on Boot Hill

  38. 32

    Wishmaster

NOTES 12 Nov 2015 LYRICS I can't remember when they finally set me free I'll live forever but I won't remember me I climb through mazes in a brain that wants to hide We came across ourself, found emptiness inside We wear a mask that keeps us safe a million years Gods live forever but forego that power here Of God and Man or tiny spark of blinding light Make heaven out of reach leave paradise in sight Across the universe to see what time has done Appear as many everywhere, in fact there's only one A genie in a bottle, walls to close him in Omniscient wish master I test thy grace again

  39. 31

    Immortal

NOTES 7 Nov 2015 LYRICS I love the world I love my life and family I live inside my mind and life is but a dream You wanted to heal me Heaven forgive me You wanted to stone me Heaven disown me I see a paradise that we don't understand They see a hell on Earth, the prophecy of man Your faith is shaken There is no portal You cannot kill me Already immortal Your faith is shaken There is no portal You cannot kill me Already immortal

  40. 30

    The Prize

NOTES 6 Nov. 2015 LYRICS You've got the flame, inside it burns all day Tell them your name, no other voice is quite the same Your night is silent, a holy night On the walk of fame, here she comes and the whole world comes to see But you are not the same, and that's not what you want to be You're a diamond... Let nature weave you and only you'll fit your gown Think, think of the prize You're eternal, endless, something in your eyes Let nature weave her glorious disguise With the universe alone your share your mind See for yourself and give your own advice If love is only a game, then you're another prize, another flame But if you find what you came for, let your heart beat all the same You're so bright now, let it shine now And think, think you are the prize You're eternal, endless, something in your eyes Let nature weave her glorious disguise With the universe alone your share your mind See for yourself and give your own advice

  41. 29

    Disappearance of the Universe

NOTES 28 mars 2009 - original 2013 - new vocals 22 fév 2015 - new mix 03 jan 2016 - solos and new vocals LYRICS The disappearance of the universe, one step out of time We've got a beautiful system, you've got a rank and file Well if it's sick you can heal it, it's just a matter of style Well I've got this little man, living in my head Won't stop talking until I'm dead, oh yeah White golden powder, what did they know? Absolute power, to run the show I've got this little man, living in my head Won't stop talking until I'm dead, oh yeah Somebody made me a god The disappearance of the universe, one step out of time

  42. 28

    Ventriloquist

NOTES 2 April 2014 - original idea working title « Never-ending Tron waltz » due to the guitar melody that sounded like the 80s Tron arcade game music on the level with the coloured bars that descend. Dec. 1 2014 - more or less final version & lyrics LYRICS Silence, nevermore Nevermore The older that we get, the more flowers we put on the grave, of our dreams, to mend a broken heart You’re stabbing yourself in the back, and you’re severing all of your ties, When I built this bridge 'twas built to burn, a self-destruct that makes you learn We rarely judge anything, anything that's real In a dream our passions, are aroused, by illusions pre-ordained We restore order with, imagination — that's our gift Look in my eyes, tell yourself lies, ventriloquist, I don’t exist Ventriloquist, dummy dismissed Only long memory, will ever help preserve, some kind of justice here, but why do we, forget and change the tune? What of those who remember my word? Why would I want to shake my hand? You men can choose, backbone is fused, you’ll break as soon as you bend

  43. 27

    Wind and Flames

NOTES Music 2011, lyrics Dec. 2, 2015 LYRICS When you say that you've got it made Forever and a day You know it doesn't work that way I'll come for you in time Look back, in my wake See there were amends to make Tender hearts will always break If God is so inclined... I'll always get what's mine Until the end of time I'll start the grinding stone And I'll unsheathe my sword Put metal to the stone Then metal to your bone I ride the wind flames I ride through fields of plague I hear you pray at your bedside I hear you when you beg You think you still need more Since the day of your birth And all that you could ever want Spread here upon the Earth You suffer 'till the end of your life Dying since the day you were born Forever in the back of your mind They found me washed up dead Victory in your head Consult your oracle We'll all drink from your skull We march among the living We watch you fear the dead All roads will lead to no other choice Regret the the lives you led For the money, for the power For the glory, for the sin To be holy, to be better now To be humble, but to win You suffer 'till the end of your life Dying since the day you were born Forever in the back of your mind In the wind and flames below For the road, to be high Lay low, like water... and then rise You are the man that kills The son of slaughtered souls I had to wade through a bloody pond add their names to the scroll I wonder, I gaze up Not sanctioned, by God I wander, unnoticed Unholy death squad There's no heaven without hell, 'tis me who rings the bell

  44. 26

    Against the World

NOTES 10 fév 2013 LYRICS Lightning, in the morning, on the ocean Thinking about a woman in the distance, not a real girl So a heart growing ever fonder You're a man, you're a dreamer Had you stayed would she really love you? As she does, with the distance Well it's driving you crazy Just you and me, against the world X4 Had we all read Tolstoy, all the lonely nights Would have meant we had could now find meaning But we were cowards, couldn't face it Always seeking the same damned woman For the struggle, for perfection, Me and you now against the world babe, as if we, had the only hearts that were truly screaming Just you and me, against the world X4

  45. 25

The Hunger - cut from Gods and Men album

What are we fighting for Somehow i don't know anymore End up on a foreign shore Telling lies, to keep me alive Keep that fight alive The hunger is The only way you know that you’re alive Keep that fight alive The hunger is The only way you know that you’re alive What are we fighting for Somehow i don't know anymore End up on a foreign shore Telling lies, to keep me alive Keep that fight alive The hunger is The only way you know that you’re alive Keep that fight alive The hunger is The only way you know that you’re alive

  46. 24

    The Alliance

NOTES 4 oct. 2013 LYRICS On the road of a life there comes a time, when ideas they compel you past your fear Announce the intentions of the heart, better move 'fore you pick yourself apart Cause it often fails, and the target of this praise can choose two paths But either road she takes, she walks and can't help knowing that she's loved Tell me how shall we then live? A faint heart never won fair lady Forever young, forever free, but hearts still burn and hearts still freeze If you're getting old, you're getting good at keeping your heart in line in this world A man will rise, a god will fall, but nobody gets out alive In a few hours we'll be in the promised land, announcing the girl who'll take your hand The single road that led to this, wrap it up for all and ever more True love has failed, the path she took, well you can't do anything now But you'll play this out, because we just can't break the alliance Son, we never rise, we never fall, we only keep it alive We're never proud, but never small, that's what keeps us alive If you want to feel the high, then fill your mind like ship in a bottle but you don't turn your eyes upon the sea, you'll never make it alive And yet there's bound to come a time, the sacrifice will show its grace you may look down, father prays, all his hope, down in flames What an awful hand, to be dealt a son who listens to his heart So many ways to live, so many ways to fall apart

  47. 23

    The Universe

NOTES 14 Nov. 2014 LYRICS Reserve the right to be lonely, take in the world that you're living in put your hands in the Earth and, observe yourself as you do your friend We are the world that we're living in I've got the notion I’m only… I’ve got the right, I’m a hemisphere One half of the map of the soul is, left to survive in a world of fear Why we fight, it seems pretty clear Unto the Earth was born a man, and a woman took his hand Let the offerings be had, to the gods in our heads We fell from the stars, we burned in a cosmic rain Bubbling in the mud, a pattern of primal code Spread now unto the Earth, infest our barren globe Stand and we wonder why Out of the universe Mind and matter converse Behold the mirror sees itself We’ve got a mind but it’s only... well it only helps me get from here to there Idle thoughts will creep slowly, 'till the death of God is completely clear No magic hand to wipe back the tears Unto the Earth was born a man, and a woman took his hand Let the offerings be had, to the gods in our heads We fell from the stars, we burned in a cosmic rain Bubbling in the mud, a pattern of primal code Spread now unto the Earth, infest our barren globe Stand and we wonder why We are the universe I’m just another verse Behold (we are the) mirror that sees itself

    Shaman at Midnight

NOTES 27 avril 2014 LYRICS Here them howl at the moonlight Like the effort is worth a life we sing and we paint in the cave but why? Now the man in the middle The shaman knows the borders of life Where your fortunes lie, the truth must be your guide Twisting, writhing, painting, crying, smiling, never a word for these Lips that lie and hearts that wonder why I gave you the trust you seek Like a shaman in the night, take his hand, your habit dies Like a shaman at midnight Take his hand, your habit dies Well all manner of good thinking seeks more knowledge Oh but was I ever haggard How could I pay the bills? Whether your fortune lies is a matter of good advice Twisting, writhing, painting, crying, smiling, never a word for these Lips that lie and hearts that wonder why I gave you the trust you seek well you left me standing there, forced to enforce my threat You left me fuming, you were never worth my bet I'd will so hard to exchange us, our kind sounds the alarm Well you know that I'm, ready to pull the plug even now Twisting, writhing, painting, crying, smiling, never a word for these Lips that lie and hearts that wonder why I gave you the trust you seek

    Inhuman

NOTES Originally written on June 25, 2012 More work on 27 juillet 2014 LYRICS A god, a man, so hard to define A king makes the rules and he'll make himself divine And if the Earth should cease to provide You'll wear the chimes of the girl you sacrifice Sun and Moon, make them collide Heavens obey, you're the all-seeing eye Love and fear, of god and man they will be Well it's inhuman Made a god of man You're killing it Made a god of man I give myself the knowledge, I give myself the test Feel so alone, and I get myself depressed Been there so many times, I know what to expect Makes for a lazy brain, that thinks it knows what's best Once gentlemen would hang their swords, before they'd wander in Won't you toe the line, honour me again God never promised anything, that was only men Well it's inhuman Made a god of man You're killing it Made a god of man Ahh it's over now, God does not for forgive, God only gives I give myself the knowledge, I give myself the test Throw myself a bone sooth my self distress I'd give my only child, but it isn't mine to give There's nothing more than that, I gave you my solid best By his grave that night, she gave me my first kiss Once in every life, there's a last dance, there's a first love It's the gift of life, my life to give
