An Open Letter to Philippine Media Practitioners & Bloggers Covering Tech Events
Dear Colleagues, As members of the media and blogging community, we have the privilege — and responsibility — of shaping how stories in the tech industry are shared with the world. Media briefings and press events are crucial platforms for gaining insights and updates that are both timely and valuable to our audiences. However, it’s time we collectively address a growing concern: the quality and relevance of questions asked during these events. Let’s be blunt. Time is of the essence during these briefings. Everyone is there for the same reason: to learn, to get accurate information, and to walk away with a better understanding of the topic at hand. Yet, all too often, these sessions are derailed by irrelevant anecdotes, personal stories, or questions that lack clarity. https://www.bobreyes.com/an-open-letter-to-philippine-media-practitioners-bloggers-covering-tech-events/

How to Choose Your First Programming Language
So, you've decided to dive into the world of programming but are overwhelmed by the countless options available? Choosing your first programming language can be daunting, but fear not! This guide will help you make an informed decision. Understanding Your GoalsThe first step is to identify your career goals. What do you want to build? Are you interested in creating dynamic websites, analyzing data, developing mobile apps, or crafting video games? Your goals will significantly influence the language you choose. For example, if you want to build web applications, JavaScript, Python, or Ruby might be good starting points. For data science, Python and R are popular choices. Considering Market DemandOnce you've identified your goals, research the job market. Look for in-demand programming languages in your desired field. Websites like LinkedIn and Indeed can provide valuable insights into the most sought-after skills. Learning Resources and CommunityThe availability of quality learning resources and a supportive community can greatly impact your learning experience. Look for languages with extensive documentation, online tutorials, and active communities. Platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and freeCodeCamp offer a wealth of free and paid courses. Beginner-Friendly LanguagesSeveral programming languages are particularly well-suited for beginners due to their simple syntax and clear structure: Python: Known for its readability, Python is excellent for data science, machine learning, and web development.JavaScript: The backbone of the web, JavaScript is essential for creating interactive web applications.Go: A modern language designed for efficiency and simplicity, often used for building scalable web services and infrastructure.Common MisconceptionsIt's important to debunk some common myths: There's no perfect language: Every language has its strengths and weaknesses. The best language for you depends on your specific needs.Don't get stuck in a language: While it's important to focus on one language initially, don't be afraid to explore others. Learning multiple languages can broaden your skillset.Experiment and EnjoyThe most important thing is to find a language that you enjoy learning. Don't be afraid to try different languages until you find the one that resonates with you. Remember, the journey of learning to code is as much about problem-solving and critical thinking as it is about mastering a specific language. In conclusion, choosing your first programming language is a personal decision. By considering your goals, the job market, learning resources, and personal preferences, you can make an informed choice and embark on a rewarding coding journey. === Based on BossROD Podcast Episode

Is Junior Full-Stack Developer a Myth?
Is "Junior Full-Stack Developer" an Oxymoron?Kuya Dev breaks down the controversial term "junior full-stack developer" and shares his insights into the complexities of web development. The term "full-stack developer" has become a buzzword in the tech industry, often used interchangeably with "jack-of-all-trades." But is it realistic to expect a junior developer to be proficient in both frontend and backend technologies? Kuya Dev delves into this question, exploring the nuances of web development and the challenges faced by aspiring full-stack developers. The Evolution of Web DevelopmentThe concept of a "full-stack developer" has evolved significantly over the years. With the advent of frameworks like React and Node.js, it's now possible to build entire applications using a single language, such as JavaScript. However, this doesn't mean that every junior developer can become a proficient full-stack engineer overnight. The Myth of the Junior Full-Stack DeveloperKuya Dev argues that the expectation for junior developers to be full-stack is unrealistic and can be detrimental to their growth. Here are some of his key points: Overwhelming Skillset: The modern web development landscape is vast and complex. Expecting a junior to master both frontend and backend technologies is like asking them to learn multiple languages at once.Lack of Specialization: By trying to be proficient in everything, junior developers may struggle to develop deep expertise in any particular area.Exploitation: Companies may use the term "full-stack" to justify paying junior developers less, expecting them to take on a wider range of responsibilities. The Importance of SpecializationKuya Dev emphasizes the value of specialization in the early stages of a developer's career. By focusing on a specific area, such as frontend or backend, junior developers can build a strong foundation and become more valuable to their teams. Key TakeawaysJunior developers should focus on specialization: Choose a specific area of web development and become proficient in it.Companies should be realistic about junior developer expectations: Avoid overloading junior developers with too many responsibilities. The term "full-stack" can be misleading: It's important to understand the nuances of the term and avoid using it as a blanket statement. In conclusion, while it's possible to become a full-stack developer, it's important to do so gradually and with the right support. By focusing on specialization and building a strong foundation, junior developers can set themselves up for long-term success in the tech industry. Leadership Fatigue and Burnout
Remember: Leadership isn’t just about driving change—it’s about sustaining it, starting with yourself. When I started being a student-leader back in high school, I adopted what I called the "Lone-Wolf" Mentality. I made executions solely on my shoulders, and I often struggled to delegate tasks, thinking I could do everything myself. Years have passed, and through my active involvement in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) User Groups realm and managing AWS Cloud Club Philippines since 2023, I’ve come to realize the toll this mentality has taken on me. This mindset cost me mental, emotional, and physical fatigue, as I constantly pushed myself to meet every expectation without relying on others. The pressure to perform at such a relentless pace began to chip away at my well-being. Asi - Regional Captain of AWS Cloud Clubs Philippines and a dedicated student at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. With a strong passion for cloud computing and cybersecurity, Asi has played pivotal roles as the Former Captain, of AWS Cloud Club - PUP Manila, driving collaboration and innovation in the tech community. https://dev.to/asi_security/leadership-fatigue-and-burnout-1j0m

Where Flip-Flops Meet Funding: Inside Geeks on a Beach 2024
Mactan Cebu, Philippines - November 16, 2024 - Fresh from wrapping up last week, Geeks on a Beach 2024 proved once again why it's the Philippines' most unique tech conference. Picture this: entrepreneurs in beach shorts, investors in slippers, and tech leaders sporting sun hats, all converging at the JPark Hotel and Resort in Mactan, Cebu. Now in its 7th year, the conference returned to Mactan, Cebu, after last year's successful event in Panglao, Bohol. Despite recent typhoons in the region, the weather cooperated beautifully for the event, offering perfect conditions for both outdoor networking and indoor sessions. The sunny skies and gentle sea breeze provided an ideal backdrop for the conference, creating the perfect environment for meaningful connections and conversations. https://dev.to/kakacomputer/where-flip-flops-meet-funding-inside-geeks-on-a-beach-2024-2b67
