58: Baby Weight
From hilarious tweets to thought-provoking interviews, Baby Weight caught my eye all year. She helps me finish Season 2 with a bang, sharing stories about how she learned to DJ in a pop-loving dive bar, coining the term "Riot Girl Rave" and why she believe women and gender non-comforming DJs and producers are the second coming of DIY dance.Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

What do Sartre and Camus have to do with techno? LA-based DJ and producer Lubelski is gonna tell you all about it! My pal comes through to talk about his wonderfully-absurd album "Happy Accidents," the joys and expenses of modular synths, the cool freedom of existentialism and more!Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

55: Pat Lok
I finally get my funky friend Pat Lok to join the show, and the conversation just flows like disco for breakfast. It was supposed to be a b2b conversation with his pal and frequent collaborator Party Pupils, but we ended up having a rip-roaring time regardless, talking about the creative process, his favorite sushi spots in Vancouver, his incredible Fone-a-Friend interview series, his "Gone is Yesterday" mini-epic and more!Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

54: Elohim
Elohim has long been one of the most candid artists on the modern electro-pop scene, and our conversation on the show is no different. It's not my first time speaking with the producer-singer-songwriter, but it is our first time diving into her beautiful four-part EP series "Journey to the Center of Myself"—a must listen for anyone, I promise. In this episode, we chat about learning to live with anxiety, her myriad of rock star influences, what's really going on inside her mind on stage and so much more! 53: Rinzen
Rinzen is an old friend of mine, and it's a pleasure to crack his brilliant mind open on my show. He used to be a dance music journalist alongside myself, writing for Billboard Dance, then his music got signed by Deadmau5, and the rest is history he continues to write.Today, we chat about the deep world-building that goes into his songwriting, how he crafts rich and multi-layered creations inspired by the world around him, and we get some advice for other artists coming up in the game.Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

52: Proper Villains
This episode features NYC producer and DJ Proper Villains, who despite his saucy name is actually very, very nice. He shares back-in-the-day rave stories, talks up his epic vinyl collection, and of course, gets into what was then his recent collaboration with Cakes Da Kill, "Don Dada," which is a ballroom-esque banger. This dude knows his shit, he’s such a great guy. He’s even a dad now, shout out all the dads. 51: Heyz
Who is Heyz? It's not just a question, it's the name of this madman's first official EP, out now on Deadbeats. It's a mix of beauty and bass, and it does well to introduce Heyz to the world, but there's so much more to this dude than meets the ear. In what must be one of the most colorful Kat Calls chats to date, Heyz tells us all about his traveling music hobo grandpa, the double edged sword that is going viral on TikTok, what in the world possessed him to put a gag on the cover of his debut EP and—once and for all—who Heyz really is!Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

Counting credits that including Sidepiece's "On My Mind," "Bad Bitches" with Marshmello, "200 MPH" with Bad Bunny and more, Nitti Gritti has proven himself as one of the dopest and most diverse producers on the modern pop and electronic scene. From his home studio in Ft. Lauderdale, he cooks up mind-melting trap, dubstep, pop-punk, house records and more. It's all about having fun and getting the right beats in the right hands. In today's chat, we talk about his childhood spent in Haiti, take a look at his wild Lego collection, hear about his work with Pitbull, Shaq and others, and get a sneak peak into what's coming next for the recent Grammy nominee.Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

49: Hex Cougar, Pauline Herr, So Sus
Some artists put on for up-and-coming artists, but Hex Cougar puts those up-and-comers on his songs directly. The LA-based DJ and producer brought Pauline Herr, So Sus and Sejo---three super talented visionaries--and joined the trio in a grand and true-scale sonic epic. The "Genesis" EP and its four tracks blend each artist's identity to create something new and larger than the sum of its parts. It was the first time they'd all collaborated, and they did it all over text and email! In this chat, I get three of the four super producers together to hear how their avenger product turned into one of the most exciting EPs of 2021. Shout out Sejo who couldn't be here because he had to work. 48: Covex
Hailing from the wilds of Colorado, Covex distills the very feeling of being alone in nature into soothing, electronic melodies. That being said, his debut album "A Change of Perspective" is so much more than a collection of lovely moods. It's a full exploration of sound and feeling, drudging up the darkness of the shadows as well as stepping into the light. Today, we chat with Covex to learn more about his incredible musical, how he found his voice, exactly why he felt the compulsion to write a full-length album and more!Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

47: Vindata
With love, intention and an exploratory spirit, Branden Ratcliff and Jared Poythress have pushed the Vindata project to beautiful heights. Debut album 'With Opened Eyes' is a culmination of everywhere the duo has been, mixing melodic grooves with head-knockin' beats, spiritual stillness with euphoric emotion and beyond. Out on Monstercat, the team at Billboard named it one of the best electronic albums of 2021!A few months after this interview was conducted, Vindata announced that Jared was leaving the group to pursue other creative endeavors. It's my honor to have spoken to the two friends shortly after the triumphant release of their LP, before they parted ways. They're incredibly smart and fun-loving dudes, and I hope you enjoy this chat as much as I did!Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

46: Vetta Borne
Sometimes, you've just got to rip it up and start again. Just ask Vetta Borne. The Aussie singer-songwriter had a pretty comfy career writing pop songs for other stars and a solid career performing under her own name until her grandma passed away and inspired the singer to reinvent herself entirely. At the start of 2020, she changed her name to Vetta Borne and discovered a seriously sensual and funky new brand of dance pop. She also learned how to produce, mix, master and play bass guitar. Now, she's an all-in-one DIY powerhouse, and her debut EP Emelia is a must-play.Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

Imagine you're sitting in high school English class when you get an email that says "Odesza wants to meet you." That's just about what happened to Luc Bradford, better known as Ford. to fans. The young producer has led a rather blessed life all around; from his international childhood to his signing with the Seattle duo's Foreign Family Collective. He released his debut album '(The) Evening' in 2018, but in this episode, we chat all about his beautiful sophomore LP, 'The Color of Nothing.' 44: Sam Gellaitry
Scotland's Sam Gellaitry has been one of the highest-regarded names on the electronic beat scene since he was 17. His own parents supported his decision to drop out of high school and focus on music, and got a Super Bowl ad placement before he turned 20. Now, he's throwing everything you know about him out the window, picking up a microphone and making the best music of his nearly 10-year career—and he's only 21!In this episode, we have a helluva time geeking out over Daft Punk and Mr. Oizo, reliving his first-ever DJ set, exploring his synesthesia and hearing all about the high-concept theories that go into his impressive EP series, including the recent IV. 42: TT The Artist
The best kind of queen is the one that puts on for everyone around her, and TT The Artist is exactly that kind of visionary. As soon as she was introduced to the Baltimore club scene, she started giving back. Her label Club Queen Records makes space for femme creatives of color, and her full-length documentary Dark City Beneath The Beat shines a bright spotlight on the limitless minds and spirited souls that make Baltimore one of the most exciting city's in the country--even if it's often overlooked. In this episode, I chat with TT for the first time to hear how she climbed out from under the shadow of a sheltered, religious home to become a bastion of the Bmore scene and women creatives all across the country. 41: Krane
When it comes to diversity of sound and skill, Krane is one of the bravest on the scene. He's one of the last big Soundcloud breakouts before the rise of Spotify, an artist who took on his first gig as a DJ without really knowing what he was getting himself into. The key to his success? He won't let himself overthink anything, thereby avoiding the analysis paralysis that can keep so many creatives from just jumping in and letting go.In this episode, I catch up with Krane and chat about his latest LP "Getting Better" as well as his successful "Sessions" series which sees him collaborate with up-and-coming producers across genres and the globe, a process he finds integral to his own work ethic, and maybe a little bit of chatter about teenage guilty pleasures.Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

40: Skream
There might not be a realer DJ/producer on the planet. This conversation ran long, but every drop of it is gold. Skream and his friends invented dubstep when he was just a kid, and he's here to let everyone know, dubstep is in his blood. The real OG is back making 140 bpm tunes again (and he actually is back on the tour circuit playing it again!). After nearly 20 years of work in the studio, Skream is free to make whatever the hell kind of music he wants, and he's got the skills to back it up.In today's chat, Skream talks about the early days of dubstep, his friendship with Benga, that b2b with Rusko at EDC Las Vegas, his take on the "og dubstep" debate, and he throws a couple fun party stories in there for good measure.Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

39: Wavedash
I could not be more honored to present one of Wavedash's very first interviews! This Austin trio just dropped one of the best albums of the year. "World Famous Tour" is a feat of sound and spirit, an album that took the lifelong friends farther into themselves and closer to their artistic truth that ever before--and as we hear in today's chat, that is not an easy thing to do.I get into all the fun details, from their favorite video games and go-to Smash Bros. characters, to their surprising love of shoegaze and their mentorship from Porter Robinson. 38: Nala
I first met Nala when she was a fledgling DJ in Miami, and already by then she was running a DJ school for other women. She moved to her native LA after graduating college and finessed the fuck out a career, going out every night, making meaningful connections with the artists around her and almost never saying no to an opportunity. When COVID-19 shut the world down, she kept hustling, launching TV Party with Richie Panic and bringing that rave vibe to Dirtybird. Now, she's signed to the boutique label and releasing the best music of her career to date!Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

37: Glenjamn
When it comes to bloghouse, if Glenjamn didn't film it, it probably wasn't that big of a deal. Ever since he filmed Daft Punk's legendary Coachella 2006 performance, he's dedicated his life to documenting the coolest parts of counter culture, from the sweaty L.A. club days of the late 2000s, to Fashion Week Paris with Virgil Abloh. He caught Thomas Bangalter spinning sans helmet at Cinespace in 2009, recorded DJ Mehdi's last concert with Carte Blanche, and he earned all this access by being a genuinely cool fucking dude.In this episode, I turn the camera on the cameraman and hear how he became the bloghouse era's go-to videographer - and how he plans to turn that footage into a documentary!Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

36: Pusher
I've been a fan of Pusher ever since I discovered "Islands, Waves, Caves, & Skies" in a random Soundcloud mix in 2012. He may have started out as a video game-inspired future bass producer, but he's since evolved through a myriad of stages, writing dance-pop hits like "Clear" and exploring the art of commitment and spontaneity with his Jamuary series, but it's his debut album Stay-At-Home Popstar that sees him put all the pieces of Pusher together into one mind-melting, infectious and tongue-in-cheek nihilistic piece of genius - even his jazz performer past! In today's episode, we chat about how Eminem, Frank Zappa, Don Hertzfeldt and r/collapse all inspired this a-pop-calyptic wonder, and we also talk about his rural upbringing and weird patterns of behavior that lead him to fully commit to things like film scoring and, well, Jamuary lol. It's fun! Enjoy!Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

35: Kaleena Zanders
Kaleena Zanders is one of the most powerful and positive voices on the dance music scene, but this singer-songwriter is so much more than a topline. I'm honored to get to know her better on the program, and she was just as bright an energy as I expected. Here, we chat about her creative childhood, studio snacks, crowdsurfing at Coachella, how the dance community stopped her from quitting music altogether, and how her deeply-personal solo EP is set to explore all her funky musical facets.Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

34: Moore Kismet
Moore Kismet is one of the hottest rising producers in the electronic scene, primed to release a debut album later this year - and they're only 16! Balancing Zoom school and a bubbling career is not too much for this stunning talent to handle. Their passion for art and life is infectious, their dedication is evident, and their energy is nothing short of unicorn magic! In today's chat, I talk to Moore Kismet about the power of single "Rumor," the perfection of comedy troupe Smosh, the influence of Mama Kismet, the importance of friends, the rise of the Valiant Equals and why it's not worth making music if the music doesn't make you and other people happy!Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

33: Madeon
Madeon is a multi-talented producer, DJ, songwriter and all-around artist who broke onto the scene as a 16-year-old prodigy. Today, he's regarded as one of the top talents in the modern dance and pop realm, landing credits with Lady Gaga, Two Door Cinema Club, Coldplay and Ellie Goulding. His sophomore album "Good Faith," released in 2019, is a high-water achievement that pushed his boundaries as a creative, a dreamer and a performer. It was nominated for Best Electronic Album at the Grammys, and the accompanying live show brought Madeon's universe to grand heights. It was an honor to chat with Madeon, whom I've followed since his "Pop Culture" days. 32: Pennywild
Multi-talented dancer, director, producer and DJ Pennywild is one of the warmest and most thoughtful artists out there. Her debut EP "Midi in Motion" dedicates each track to a different style of dance, celebrating vogue, swing, tap and modern dance with pulsing club beats and infectious hooks. In today's episode, I chat with Penny about growing up in New Jersey and New York City as a performing arts school kid, how she discovered dance music at Berghain during a world tour of West Side Story, how making music has influenced her dancing, directing and choreographing Zedd's "Inside Out" dance music video, and more!Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

Good thing Alison Wonderland and Valentino Khan are such good friends. Their positive energy and thoughtful commentary made this episode of Kat Calls a winner despite my best efforts to fail! 30: Good Times Ahead
If you wanna talk day ones, Good Times Ahead have to be part of the conversation. I've had the distinct pleasure of coming up with these guys, first interviewing them for the Miami New Times in 2012 and following them through their musical journey via damn near every publication I've written for. They've opened for Rihanna's arena tour, collaborated with pretty much every major producer in the game, and they've done it all with the same down-to-earth, real human spirit that makes me a forever fan - well, that and the fact that their genre-defying tunes are absolute booty-shakin' smashes every god damn time.In today's Kat Calls, I chat with Matt and Julio about everything from partying in Beijing to that time they brought their parents to Ultra Music Festival. We find out the secret to making the best cafecito ever, who in EDM is the worst at video games, how best to get your music heard by your favorite DJ, how they've managed to stay creative during COVID, and why pessy island is the place to be in 2021.Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

28: Four Color Zack
He's either the smartest dumb person or the dumbest smart person I've ever met. He's a world champion battle DJ, a multi-talented creative and literally the best channel on Twitch (well, at least in my opinion). Four Color Zack comes through to chat about a whole lot of stuff, from his life as a Mountain Dew-chugging teenage graffiti artist, to his soul-crushing days spent in advertising. He explains whatever the hell Rords of the Froor was, and how he won the Red Bull Thre3style 2012 World Finals. I couldn't have had a better nor sillier time catching up with the absolute legend. Rusko is a ray of human sunshine, and in this episode, he tells stories of his life and creations with a permanent smile. We chat about how coming of age in the UK's reggae sound system culture, partying with Skream, making the iconic "Woo Boost" video, friend chicken and shrimp, signs from Prodigy, old school rave tunes, and his most recent Sauce EP, out now on Wakaan. 26: LP Giobbi
As soon as I had the practice call with LP Giobbi, I knew this episode was gonna be magic. Raised by Dead Heads and trained as a jazz pianist, the effervescent "piano house" queen radiates joy and passion. Her deep love of the crowd infuses her tracks and performances with infectious energy, while her dedication to the craft and to her fellow creatives spawned the important work of Femme House; a non-profit dedicated to making space for women and nonbinary people in this industry by teaching them the technical aspects of mixing, sound engineering, producing and more through networking and mentorships.During our call, we go deep into her hippie roots, get the full story on her Daft Punk connection and some of her favorite productions, while also pondering Halloween costumes and enjoying a surprise hello from our friend Kah-Lo!Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

25: Quiet Bison
For a kid that counted Flume as a fan before he graduated high school, Quiet Bison is pretty damn humble. The Portland-based producer is not pretentious in the least, but he does turn out mind-warping music at a dizzying speed - whether or not you can dance to it is another question. From his early days humming "Duel to Fates" to his adolescent love of deadmau5, QB honed in on a uniquely-emotive sound that shines in its use of intricate percussion and moody melody. In this episode of Kat Calls, he chats about studio techniques, how to tell if anything you're making is actually good, and his massive, forthcoming debut album that might include 30 songs.Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

He started DJing when he was 13 and cut his teeth playing Miami proms and bar mitzvah. Now, he brings his limitless blend of electro, techno, house and IDM to crowds from Detroit to Berlin and beyond. 23: Saint Punk
Saint Punk's bass-heavy style of "grunge house" is rough and riddled with rebellion - and that makes sense, because he was singing and playing guitar in rock bands years before he produced. His early released on Tchami's Confessions label channeled that energy, but his latest singles "Fight" and "Molotov Cocktail" take it a step further, inspired by his frustrations with militarized police and social injustice. In today's episode, Kat chats with Saint Punk about his SoCal roots, his surprise skills as a wine sommelier, Billy Joel, production tips, his plans to start an indie label, and one wild night in Vegas.Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

Ever since his days playing bass guitar in marching band, Ashley Jones stands out more than he fits in. Going against the grain is his super power, whether that's dropping genre-defying drum'n'bass with Evol Intent, breaking the blog house scene with Treasure Fingers, or running tech house experiments as Datatab. His willingness to try something new made him a standout of the Twitch DJ explosion (his background in graphic design didn't hurt). 18: Crystallmess
Who said dark-techno texturalists couldn't have fun? Paris-based producer and DJ Christelle is as kind as she is talented. She had me jealous with her teenage stories in the French Touch 2.0 era, but when the club scene turned to tech beats, she funneled her frustration into a hard-hitting, emotional, noise-based sound all her own. She's also a mixed media storyteller, and I was amazed to learn the inspirations behind her politically-charged works, including a forthcoming piece that examines the cancerous pesticides currently wreaking havoc on her mother's home island of Martinique.Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

Coming straight from 2090, Venessa Michaels is an out-of-the-box music maker blending nostalgic R&B with futuristic rainbow beats. She's all about community and recently collaborated on a candy-coated EP with Kaleena Zanders as well as a full album with LUVK (that latter of which put her guitar skills to werk). The experience inspired her to write her own forthcoming solo LP that sees the producer expand her sound to new dimensions. Kat caught up to talk important things like '90s Nick Toons, finding your musical tribe, flamenco guitar, production tips and more.Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

16: YehMe2
Stoked to welcome the absolute legend. As half of Flosstradamus, Josh Young changed the face of EDM, infusing the scene with real trap shit (and getting banned from Chicago parties in the process). In 2016, he went solo as YehMe2, and in 2020, he's taken the crown as one of quarantine's stream kings, creating space for humor, activism and hard-ass beats on stages from Lollapalooza to Beyond Wonderland. Never afraid to speak his mind, YehMe2 is very candid as we chat Kid Sister, the story behind "Original Don," why he really left Flosstradamus, being a dope "Rap Dad," and his forthcoming debut LP.Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/

15: Sophiegrophy
Nigerian-born, Australian-based rapper Sophiegrophy isn't like other MCs. Her dynamic style isn't limited to any one flavor or groove, and she's just as likely to listen to Green Day and Jon Bellion as she is Lil Wayne. She's worked closely with dance producers, including Walker & Royce, J. Worra and Codes, but it's her debut EP "Bold" that gives her confident and unbridled voice space to truly shine. Kat caught up with Sophie to chat about dreams, writer's block, creativity in quarantine and more.Follow for updates:IG | Twitter | TikTok | DiscordFollow the Kat Scrawls Newsletter for essays, interviews, playlists and morehttps://katbein.substack.com/
