Last Voyage of the Karluk

In August 1913, the Karluk, flagship of Vilhjalmar Stefansson’s Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913–16, became trapped in the ice while sailing to Herschel Island near the northern Alaska/Yukon border. After drifting across the Beaufort and Chukchi seas, in January 1914 the ship was crushed by the ice and sank. In the following months, the crew struggled to survive, first on the ice and then on the shores of Wrangell Island. In all, eleven men of the crew of 25 died before rescue. - Summary by Barry Eads
