What is Be The First Membership? Who's it for? How do you join? What do you get? How is it different? These are all the questions you're asking about Be The First and I'll be answering all of them, in a live interview conducted by my magnificent eldest son Dylan! When you agree to be interviewed by your own son live on social media, anything could happen. But this work is too important to hide behind curated images and carefully scripted copy. The most authentic way for me to present it to you is direct from the source i.e. in conversation with me the founder. How wrong could it go? Dylan is the eldest of 4 boys and a daily inspiration to me. He will be kind, but he won't let me off the hook, so pull up a seat and enjoy a lively and engaging conversation. Episode #57 "Not like normal black people"
When someone tells you you're "not like normal black people"; when they note with surprise "you're very articulate" or comment on how well spoken you are or well put together you are - it's a micro-aggression rooted in negative racial stereotypes that is hurtful and offensive. But don't let micro-aggressions like this wound you and undermine you. Take control of the narrative and use them to empower you. "You're not like normal black people" doesn't diminish you. It doesn't condemn you to play small. It doesn't mean you're the only one. It proves you're the first. Tune in to discover how to make this micro-aggression empower you. P.S. If you're a mid to senior level black lawyer and you want to progress within the industry, BE THE FIRST is the room you want to be in. Episode #52 What is Coaching
You've heard about my Be The First Progression for Black Lawyers. You've learned how this coaching program will get you to your progression goal, supporting you all the way to the top. You envision how my distinctive coaching skills and the unique tools that I teach can help you climb the progression ladder. You're thinking about joining, but you ask yourself, "What will the coaching look like? What exactly am I signing up to?" Coaching is often misunderstood, so in the latest episode of The Legal Imposters Podcast, I break it down into a simple framework I call The Coaching Triad. 🎙️ You see, coaching isn't just chatting; it's a structured process that involves: 🧠 Asking Questions: Thought-provoking questions that reveal deeper insights. 💬 Responding: Engaging with those questions to explore your thoughts and feelings. 👂 Active Listening: I turn down the volume on my own thoughts to fully focus on you. This ensures you feel heard and understood, creating a supportive environment for your growth. For our conversation to be considered coaching, it must include all three elements of the coaching triad simultaneously. If any part is missing, it's just a regular conversation between us. In this episode, I also touch on how reflection is a crucial part of my coaching process. By reflecting back what you share, I help you recognize patterns and opportunities you may have overlooked. This reflective practice extends to the overall Be The First Program, where you will be encouraged to acknowledge your progress regularly to help reinforce motivation and build up your confidence. After listening to this episode, there will be no confusion. No uncertainty. There won't be any doubt in your mind whether coaching is a worthwhile investment for you. Because it is, and you're taking your first steps toward your most valuable investment. If you're a mid-to-senior level black lawyer seeking personalized coaching and support, book a consultation with me today and start your career progression! 📞 Book an application call: https://calendly.com/carolineflanagan/bethefirst

Episode #50 Follow the Progression Pathway
You know what you need to do to progress, so why are you still getting stuck? You have a progression goal, so why aren't you advancing as quickly as you'd like or thought you would. You have put yourself out there and attended training programs and conferences, only to return to your desks and struggle to implement what you've learned. There's a huge chasm between you and your goal, with no path in sight. This disconnect can lead to feelings of self-doubt. It can even worsen your imposter syndrome, especially in environments where we may feel isolated or underrepresented. In Episode 50 of The Legal Imposters Podcast, I'll introduce you to the Progression Pathway, a 7-stage model I've created to help you understand why you might not be advancing as quickly as you'd like and, more importantly, what you can do to change that. This model outlines seven essential stages for achieving your career goals. The Seven Stages of the Progression Pathway: 1️⃣ Decide Your Goal: Define a clear, specific, and measurable career goal. 2️⃣ Understand the Pathway: Create a personalized plan outlining the necessary steps and milestones. 3️⃣ Learn the Skills: Develop core competencies crucial for your career progression. 4️⃣ Implement the Skills: Apply what you've learned in real-world scenarios, even when faced with challenges. 5️⃣ Get Coached: Seek support and guidance to navigate obstacles and reframe negative thoughts. 6️⃣ Keep Going: Maintain momentum and resilience, evaluating your progress and making adjustments as needed. 7️⃣ Achieve Your Goal: Celebrate your achievements and set new goals for continuous growth. I'll also touch on how seeking support through the Be The First Progression programme will help you overcome the unique barriers that black lawyers face so you can follow the Progression Pathway, all the way to the top. Remember, the path to success isn't always a straight line, but with the Progression Pathway as your roadmap, you'll be navigating those unique challenges like a pro. If you're a mid-to-senior level black lawyer and you're ready to step onto the Progression Pathway and achieve your goals, I can help you with that. Episode #49 Always have a progression goal
Are you feeling directionless in your legal career? Do you feel like you're just going through the motions day after day? Bored. Unchallenged. Stuck. Without a clear progression goal, your career can feel like it's happening to you rather than being something you actively build. 🚧 In this episode of The Legal Imposters Podcast, I share how you can take control of your career by establishing a regular goal-setting habit that is both challenging and achievable. I also share how setting a new progression goal every six months keeps your career moving forward by: ⏰ Creating Urgency: Six months is long enough to make meaningful progress but short enough to create a sense of urgency. If the goal were set for a year, procrastination might creep in. A six-month goal pushes you to take action without procrastination. 🌱 Producing Sustainable Progress: A six-month period allows for sustainable progress. It gives you the time to implement changes without burning out or feeling overwhelmed. 🎉 Helping You Enjoy the Process: Career progression is not just about reaching a destination; it's about enjoying the journey and growing along the way. As you set your progression goals, consider joining a program or community that can provide accountability and support. If you're a mid to senior level black lawyer eager to progress, Be The First Progression for Black Lawyers is the room you want to join. In addition to being coached by Caroline, you'll get: ✅ Steady Support: Encouragement from peers. ✅ Consistent Goals: Regular goal-setting habits. ✅ Shared Experiences: Learning from others' journeys. It's time to sit in the driver's seat of your career. Hold the steering wheel. Ready, Set, Goal! 🚀 P.S. I have created a FREE progression audit to help jumpstart your progression goals. Episode #46 Stop procrastinating your goal
Are you letting your career dreams gather dust on the shelf of "someday"? Do you feel a nagging sense of dissatisfaction with where you are professionally, but find yourself constantly putting off the actions needed to change it? You have a vision of where you want to be, but too often, it remains just out of reach, shrouded in excuses, inaction, and waiting for the "perfect" moment. Let's face it—waiting around won't bring you closer to success. To help you overcome procrastination and get started on your career progression goals, I share with you a Three-Step Approach designed to make the process manageable and less overwhelming: 🧠 Step 1: Become Aware of the Reasons for Procrastination Understanding why you procrastinate is the first step towards overcoming it. 📝 Step 2: Identify the First Step Towards the Goal Once you're aware of why you're procrastinating, the next step is to identify a small, manageable action you can take. Divide the task into smaller, more manageable parts.\ 🚶♀️Step 3: Take That First Step Now that you've identified the first step, it's time to take action. This is often the hardest part, but it's crucial for building momentum. Throughout the episode, I also challenged you to confront the illusion of "no deadlines" that often surrounds career goals. Unlike time-bound tasks, our career goals often lack those external pressures, making it easy to slip into a cycle of endless deferral. It's time to break that cycle. And the time to act is now. Your dream career is calling, and it's time to answer. 📞✨ PS. I have an easy first step for you! Join my free masterclass next Monday, July 8th entitled How To Progress Your Career When You're The Only One. Choose between the lunchtime session at 1 PM BST or the evening session at 6 PM BST. Episode #45 Racial Resilience
Have you ever walked into a meeting and felt a sudden wave of self-consciousness? You scan the room, and it hits you - you're the only person of color, the only one from a different background. There are a few people who look like you at work, but even with a handful of others, it can still feel isolating. Your journeys to get where you are today are completely different. You went to different schools, had different upbringings, and culturally, you just don't connect on the same level as your colleagues. This feeling of "otherness" is real, and it's incredibly isolating. It wears you down, even if you're not consciously aware of it. But here's the thing: you are not alone. Throughout my career, I've seen firsthand the struggles black professionals face. I've also seen the incredible strength and determination it takes to overcome them and I'm on a mission to help you learn it. 💪🏽 Welcome to Racial Resilience: the ability to navigate those very real challenges, the microaggressions, the feeling of being constantly "othered", and still keep moving towards your goals. In this episode, I share with you how you can: ➡️ Understand the impact of being the only black person in a professional setting. ➡️ Address feelings of exclusion and encountering racism or microaggressions. ➡️ Harness the transformative power of racial resilience. By internalizing these principles, you don't just survive – you thrive. 🌱 Because after you develop your Racial Resilience, you won't ever get caught up in the absence of diversity. You'll start to focus on being the change you want to see. PS. In Be The First Progression for Black Lawyers, I'll discuss how you can build Racial Resilience and progress in your career. Episode #44 Growing in the face of feedback
Do you crumple in the face of negative feedback? Instead of seeing negative feedback as a gift for growth, you see it as a personal attack on your abilities. You blame the person who gave you the feedback. And worse, you dwell on old negative feedback and still get upset when you think about it. 😤 Stop resisting. Feedback isn't your enemy, It's a roadmap to improvement. In this episode, I teach you how you can receive negative feedback effectively by: 🌟 Never making it about you: The feedback is not about you as a person, it's about a specific piece of work or behaviour. 💖 Processing your emotions: Allow yourself to feel the initial discomfort so you can move on and focus on what you can learn. Don't let your emotions cloud your judgment. 🔍 Taking a closer look: Look at the feedback objectively and identify the areas where you can improve. Is there a grain of truth in it? Then reframe it as a chance to learn and grow. 🚀 Taking action: Decide what you will keep doing and what you will change based on the feedback. Don't just listen to feedback, implement it! Remember: Negative feedback is a gift, not a curse. Be willing to unwrap it so you can learn from it. P.S. In Be The First Progression for Black Lawyers, I'll guide you through a proven process for receiving and implementing feedback effectively. If you're a mid to senior-level black lawyer and you want to progress, I invite you to join. Enrollment for the September class opens in July! Places are limited so make sure you're ready. Episode #43 Creating time for Business Development
Are you constantly remembering that you need to do more business development to build your business case for partnership, but you don't actually do it? You know that you need and should be building your business case and meeting new clients. But you're so busy doing everything else, that you never find the time. And so there's this mounting pressure as the deadline for presenting your business case looms, keeping you on edge because it's yet another thing you know you should be doing but you're not getting done. If you're all too familiar with this feeling, then I have two words for you: Designate and delegate. In the latest episode of The Legal Imposters Podcast, I share how designating one day a week for business development activities and then delegating the administrative task of booking time in the diary with clients will help you: ➡️ Eliminate indecision: By choosing a specific day, you remove the daily decision-making process about when to engage in business development. ➡️ Create routines: Making it a routine part of your schedule helps in building consistency and respect for this dedicated time. ➡️ Increase efficiency: By delegating tasks like scheduling meetings and reaching out to potential clients, you can focus on high-impact activities. ➡️ Streamline processes: Clear instructions to your assistant can help streamline the scheduling and follow-up processes. Remember: The key is to take action now and stay consistent. Open your calendar today, choose your business development day, and start delegating tasks. 📅 No more putting it off—now is the time. Episode #38 Saying no to good opportunities
Just because the opportunity in front of you is a good one, doesn't mean you should say no to it! I know this sounds counter-intuitive. Why would I NOT accept a good opportunity? I hear you ask. The answer: when the opportunity in question is going to either distract you from your progression goal or spread you so thinly that you don't have the time, capacity or band width to move towards it. In Be The First Progression for Black Lawyers we are all back in the coaching room after April's Consolidation Month - a time when we pause the formal coaching sessions and you are encouraged to fly solo towards your progression goal, drawing on the tools and strategies I have been teaching and coaching you on in the previous 12 weeks. This is a great way to reveal the obstacles that are holding you back from progressing towards your goal so that we can work on them on your return to the coaching sessions and get you back on track to your goal.

Promotion isn't everything. Sometimes, career progression is as simple as asking for help instead of doing it all yourself. You have children to organise and raise and be present for. You have a partner to connect with. Friends to stay connected to. And then there are the aging parents who need your support. Episode #23 Knowing Your Value
Adding value is important. It's what you're paid for and it's how you attract opportunities. But how do you add value when you question your right to be there or feel you have nothing to contribute? Not having confidence in the value you bring is frustrating and unsettling. It keeps you stuck in your own head. It's why you're quiet in meetings. It's why you question your role, doubt yourself for the next promotion and even think about quitting. And when your brain is busy with all this, adding value just gets harder and harder. You think the problem is not having anything to contribute. But it's simply because you haven't stopped for long enough to recognise where you are and understand the value you bring. So all you need to do to ADD value, is KNOW your value in the first place. In Episode 23 of the Legal Imposters Podcast I show you how. I give you the simple steps to knowing your value and being able to contribute in every room. If you struggle to add value to meetings or team discussions or worry that you don't have anything to contribute, this episode is for you. P.S. If you're a black or minority ethnic lawyer and you're worried you're not contributing, let's talk. Book a free consultation with me now to discover how Be The First coaching can help. Episode #22 Exercising When Busy
Do you struggle to find time for exercise? One of the common mistakes I see is not making your health and in particular exercise a priority. I get it. Life is busy. Work is demanding. Sometimes exhausting. You work long hours. There aren't enough hours left in the day. But this is no excuse to neglect your exercise routine and therefore be neglecting your health. "Start small, build exercise into your daily routine and track your progress" says my PT of 8 years, Holly Aldridge, in this week's episode. "Most people focus on the physical benefits of exercise, but the biggest reason to exercise is for your mental health" says Holly. If you're constantly stressed and anxious at work or you're frustrated with your attempts to fit exercise into your routine, this episode's for you. But what you'll get from this episode doesn't end there. As well as being a brilliant Personal Trainer, Holly is also a very ambitious and astute business owner. She shares her tips on networking, developing your personal brand and posting on social media which are going to help you in your quest to stand out from the crowd and be more visible. About Holly Aldridge Holly is a personal trainer, training people from their homes and outdoors. (She's the one that has me doing all those squats and burpees on a Monday afternnoon!). Episode #21 Unnatural Networking with Charlie Lawson
"You don't have to like networking to be good at it " So says Charlie Lawson, the Unnatural Networker and my guest this week on the Legal Imposters Podcast. Charlie is the ex-BNI boss and unnatural networking expert with 2 books to his name on doing the things many of us find hard: networking and promoting yourself. In this episode Charlie takes the fear out of networking by explaining what networking really is (having a conversation, building relationships) and how to network when you're shy, an introvert or you just don't like networking (an unnatural networker). You won't be surprised to learn I met Charlie while networking on LinkedIn. He is a brilliant example of the power of building relationships and the infinite potential of networking to catapult your career or business. Tune in to find out: 1. Why I felt compelled to interview him on the podcast 2. What an unnatural networker is (and how many of you are out there) 3. Why you don't have to like networking to make it work for you 4. The right mindset for successful networking 5. A better conversation starter than "what do you do"? 6. Why networking is not about who's in the room. Mentioned in this episode: Books: The Unnatural Networker by Charlie Lawson The Unnatural Promoter by Charlie Lawson The Networking Test - click here to visit About Charlie Lawson Charlie Lawson is a very Unnatural Networker. Most experts talk about networking as though it is easy to talk to strangers. Charlie helps other Unnatural Networkers gain confidence by putting networking across from the point of view of someone who'd rather avoid it completely. His first book, The Unnatural Networker, was released in 2014, and has helped countless business owners learn how to network effectively. His second book, The Unnatural Promoter, was released in 2021, and focuses on helping people that don't like to blow their own trumpet to be brilliant at self-promotion. Charlie is a renowned and highly regarded keynote speaker, and gained his expertise from 13 years as UK national director of BNI, the international business networking organisation. In his spare time, he'll mostly be found swimming / biking / running in triathlons, while keeping his fingers crossed that Spurs finish above Arsenal in the league.

Episode #20 Building Connection
Connection. You can't build a relationship without it. With some people it's just easy. You meet, you talk, you hit it off immediately. But if you want to get ahead in your legal career you can't rely on the effortless connection you form with people who are just like you. You need to be able to connect with anyone. This isn't always easy. When you meet someone who looks different to you, dresses differently, speaks differently, has a different background to you, is from a different culture .. is at a different level of seniority or even that they work in a different part of the firm, your brain may register this as a barrier and make you think connection isn't possible. This isn't true. It's easy to build connection. You just need to know how. In episode 20 I bring you Building Connection. I give you the 3 steps that will draw people to you and make it easy for you to connect with them. But be warned! None of these steps will work if you allow your thoughts to get in the way. So because I want you to succeed at this, I also talk you through the 4 pitfalls you need to be aware of so you can get out of your own way and build the connections you need. In this episode: -The 3 steps to building connection with people who are different to you - How to remember names - How much time to spend talking about you (hint: not alot) - The 4 common thinking mistakes you make when networking which will stop you connecting with others Happy Listening P.S. Are you struggling to build the relationships that you need to progress your legal career? I will teach you how. Book a free consult with me HERE now. Lawyers only. Mentioned in this episode: Ralph Waldo Emerson — 'In my walks, every man I meet is my superior in some way, and in that I learn from him.'

Episode #19 Intentional Networking
In this episode, I introduce you to the concept of Intentional Networking and its role in building the relationships you need for career success. First I talk about the common hesitations and beliefs about networking that are either stopping you from networking altogether or mean the networking you are doing isn't as effective as it should be. Then I give you the five parts of Intentional Networking that will ensure your networking efforts produce the best results. But before you head off and put this into practise you need to know what to expect! When the moment comes, watch out for the ways your brain will try to avoid discomfort - like giving you 10 reasons why you shouldn't go to that event you planned. Or focusing on the lack of diversity in the room instead of getting what you came for. This awareness means you'll be able to take what you've learned about Intentional Networking and use it to put yourself in more rooms, meet more people and build more of the relationships that will sustain you in your career. Happy listening. P.S. If you enjoy this episode please can you leave a review? I'd love your feedback and it makes it easier for others to find it.

Episode #17 What Being Visible Will Require Of You
Being visible is a core essential for career progression. • It's how people get to know who you are • It's how they get to experience your value • It's how they learn to trust you enough to: - give you opportunities - recognise you - support you - promote you. But when you have Imposter Syndrome, your fear of being exposed means that visibility is the last thing you want. You'll go to great lengths to avoid it, by: • Turning down opportunities to showcase your value • Not going for a promotion • Avoiding networking events • Avoiding public speaking • Being intimidated by social media. Perhaps you only do one or a couple of the above. But the problem is that any of these behaviours can hold you back and stop you from realising your true potential. In this episode, I describe my own personal struggle with Imposter Syndrome and visibility when it comes to raising my profile on social media. I explain how, like me, you need to identify WHAT you should do to raise your visibility, and, more importantly, HOW you should do it. I share with you the results of an exercise I teach in Imposter Syndrome coaching which helps you to embrace negative emotion in order to do the things that will make you visible. You don't have to make this journey alone. I teach you the process for becoming more visible in Imposter Syndrome Coaching for Lawyers, and I coach you every step of the way. If you're a lawyer and you struggle with being visible, I can help you with that. Book your free consultation call with me via this link https://calendly.com/carolineflanagan/free-consultation

Episode #16 Faking it Til You Make It
You can't short cut your way to confidence. Faking it 'til you make it may help you out when you need a quick fix, but it is not a long term strategy for building confidence. It's often one of the 'tricks' you're advised to use to help you 'overcome' your Imposter Syndrome - a mindset tactic that encourages you to do something you're terrified or reluctant to do. It works on the premise that if you 'pretend' to be able to do something often enough, or for long enough, you grow the capability to actually do it. Sounds good, right? The problem with faking it though is that your relationship with yourself doesn't change. It gives you a mask to wear, it makes you well-practised - but you are still practising being someone you are not. The best way to 'make it' is by gaining confidence in who you really ARE. In this episode, I cover all the downsides to the faking it approach and describe what you need to do instead. I explain how you need to put in the work to discover who you really are, and learn to take action from a place of trusting that you are enough. This is the method I teach in Imposter Syndrome Coaching. Enrolment for the next coaching programme is coming soon. Make sure you're on the waitlist so that you're the first to. know.

Episode #15 Celebrate The Wins
No matter how much you achieve, your confidence never grows. Why is that? The problem isn't that you're not doing enough or achieving enough. It's that you're not internalising your success. One of the common mistakes I see lawyers making is discounting and discrediting the successes they are having on a daily and weekly basis. They are so focused on the big successes, that they neglect the small everyday wins that grow your self concept and build confidence in who you are. How you know this is you: - as soon as you achieve one success, you immediately set off in search of another - you keep your successes to yourself, so no-one ever hears about them - when you have a success, you look for and focus on the 'fail' lurking within it - you repeatedly say "I deserve to be here!" but it doesn't change how you feel - you graduate to a more senior level without any formal process, and tell yourself "it doesn't count" If this is you, then the first step to internalising your success is to celebrate your wins. In this episode I tell you exactly how to do this and what to expect along the way.

Episode #14 Stop Winging It
Flying by the seat of your pants. Pulling it out of the bag at the last minute. Fire fighting. Hustling to get it done. It may sound exciting to approach your day job in this way, and to take pride in being this person, but all you're really doing when you work like this is winging it. Winging it is not a sustainable strategy for success. It's just another form of overworking. Like labouring over emails, excessively checking your work and doing everything yourself (I cover these in episodes 11,12 and 13) - the result is that things take you longer than they should and/or you're spending too much time on the wrong things. Episode# 10 I see you
When someone tells you (or posts on social media) that Imposter Syndrome isn't real. That it's a patriarchal construct designed to manipulate you, it can leave you confused, uncertain and, worst of all, feeling more alone than ever. But you are not alone. I see you. In this episode I talk about the very real and very powerful transformation that begins with having a name for that messy collection of feelings that can't be explained away as everyday self doubt: Imposter Syndrome. Having a name for these feelings is so important. It validates how you feel and shows you you're not alone. Naming it allows you to gain some authority over it, which is the first step towards solving it. If you've every felt like a fraud. If you ever feel your success is down to luck If you've ever been afraid that you're going to be found out.. Know that this is Imposter Syndrome. It feels real to you because Imposter Syndrome is real. You are not alone in the experience of it. And (thanks to Imposter Syndrome Coaching) you never have to be alone when you're solving it. Happy listening. P.S. Enrolment for Imposter Syndrome Coaching for Lawyers is coming soon. To join the waiting list visit https://carolineflanagan.com/imposter-syndrome-coaching/
