“Cozy or Cluttered”: Whose Labels & Standards Shape Your Choices?
In this episode, I reflect on the way we label our homes/spaces, and choices in general, and how commonly those labels may be rooted in others point-of-view more than our own. As I was adding a side table to my living room I noticed that the space that felt "cozy" to me and my son, would likely feel "cluttered" to someone else. This reflection that followed opened up into a broader inquiry about self-leadership, personal standards, and discernment. Where in life are we responding to our own internal experience, and where are we quietly orienting ourselves around others’ opinions instead? This isn’t a conversation about rejecting other perspectives outright. It’s about discernment. This episode is an invitation to gently examine whose standards and labels are informing your choices, and whether those standards and labels are serving you.Sometimes scattered. Always honest. Hopefully helpful. An ongoing exploration of elements related to self-leadership. Mindful Mediocrity: Setting the Standards We Live By
In this episode, I’m exploring an idea I’ve been playing with lately, something I call mindful mediocrity.I reflect on how our resistance to being “average,” inadequate, or unskilled can quietly restrict our lives, and how holding ourselves to one universal standard of excellence may interfere with enjoyment, curiosity, expression, and sustainability. This is a stream-of-consciousness reflection on:Standards, meaning-making, and self-leadershipPerfectionism and energy allocationSubjectivity, performance, and identityThe freedom that can come from letting different activities carry different expectationsThis isn’t about lowering standards across the board, and it’s not about dismissing growth or mastery. It’s an exploration of context, discernment, and flexibility; and how being intentional with our standards can support a more fulfilling way of living. As always, I’m simply offering reflections on an element of self-leadership that may support you. You’re invited to choose what serves you.Sometimes scattered. Chicken Cutlets & the Power of Noticing More Aligned Alternatives
On Recognizing Our Options and Choosing What FitsIn this episode, I reflect on a small, random moment (of seeing someone on social media showcasing their choice of a chicken cutlet over a protein bar) and how it sparked a conversation about alternatives, self-leadership, and the ways we unconsciously constrain ourselves.I explore how noticing different options, in both small and big ways, can support our wellbeing and help us live more sustainably. When we release unnecessary ‘should’s, we often free up energy for the things that truly matter. And make our values-based way of life more sustainable, and enjoyable. This is a gentle invitation to consider where more options might already be available to you, and what becomes possible when you allow yourself to notice them and choose a better fit.P.S. I couldn’t name the creator of “Walking Chicken Cutlets” in the episode, buy in case you’re curious; it’s Sarah Thomas from @healthyishfoods!Sometimes scattered. Always honest. Release as a Way Forward: Notes from a Pause and Purge for the 'New Year' New Year'
A reflective start to the year—without resolutions or urgency. In this episode, I share some candid thoughts on time, productivity, and the cultural pressure to optimize ourselves at the turn of a new year. Instead of focusing on what to add or achieve, the conversation turns toward release, subtraction, and intentional editing: of objects, expectations, and relational dynamics. It’s an invitation to consider what feels supportive to you right now, to notice where energy is being spent, and to explore self-leadership as an ongoing, personal practice rather than a performance constrained by constructed timelines.Sometimes scattered. Compassion for Variation: Embracing Life's Natural Fluctuations
What if the most radical act of self-leadership is accepting your natural variations instead of fighting them?In this episode, we explore why offering ourselves grace for life's fluctuations isn't just kind—it's necessary. We explore:Why the expectation to show up consistently every day creates unnecessary tensionWhat it might mean to redefine wellbeing beyond feeling "good" all the timeThe complex factors that influence our daily capacity—and why it's not all about mindsetWhat it looks like to maintain our sense of worthiness even on low-energy daysFor those of us trying to contribute meaningfully while honoring our human limitations, this conversation offers a more sustainable approach to self-leadership.Sometimes scattered. Negotiating Narratives: Balancing Observations & Opinions in Self-Leadership
Negotiating Narratives: Balancing Observations & Opinions in Self-LeadershipIn this episode of Liberatory Self-Leadership, we explore how the subtle difference between observation and opinion can completely shift the way you lead yourself.Through the story of a real-world co-ownership dispute, I illustrate how mismatched assumptions can derail collaboration — and how the same thing happens inside your own mind. Tool or Weapon? Reclaiming the Power of Self-Talk
Today’s reflection started with my son and a box of Lego mini-figure accessories. As we sorted weapons from tools, we realized the line isn’t so clear—almost any tool could be used to harm or to build, depending on the hands that hold it.The same is true for self-talk. It can be a destructive weapon, echoing disempowering messages we’ve internalized over time, or it can be a constructive tool—one that empowers, supports, and guides us.In this episode, I explore:How external messaging becomes internal self-talkWhy even “protective” childhood narratives can turn harmful if left unexaminedThe choice to reframe and redirect your inner voiceHow to cultivate self-talk as a tool for liberatory self-leadershipWhether in personal or professional pursuits, your inner voice can either undermine you or propel you forward.
